Well, all seem to admit Joss has a fixation on female charaters who can kick butt, oft of teen vintage. I was thinking about the source material for some of this. Can anybody help me fill out a list of female characters who can kick butt? Human mostly, but part feline, wolf, vampire, werewolf are ok, but android or robot are a sub-category, and dependant upon weapons and tools another (like Ripley in Aliens). Witchcraft or magic doesn't count, nor cartoons. This will be from film and TV. Since I won't be familiar with some of the entries, please mention if they fit one of those categories.

I'll start off with River, Buffy, Catwoman, Batgirl, Aeon Flux, Resident Evil, Witchblade, Underworld, Star Wars, Bionic Women, T:TSCC, Terminator 3, Aliens, Blade Runner, Dark Angel, Ultra Violet, Bones, Blade Trinity, Matrix, Long Kiss Goodnight, Last Legion, LoTR, and King Arthur.

I will add to the list as more are given.

1961 Avengers - Mrs. Peel/Diana Rigg 1966 Batman - Batgirl/Yvonne Craig 1966 Batman - Catwoman/Lee Meriwether & Julie Newmar 1968 Barbarella - Barbarella/Jane Fonda 1973 Coffey - Pam Grier 1974 Foxy Brown - Pam Grier 1975 Six Million Dollar Man - Jamie Summers/Lindsay Wagner 1982 Road Warrior - Warrior Woman/Virginia Hey 1989 Bionic Showdown - Kate Mason/Sandra Bullock 1990 Total Recall - Melina/Rachel Ticotin 1992 Buffy tVS - Buffy/Kristy Swanson 1992 Batman Returns - Catwoman/Michelle Pfeiffer 1993 Point of No Return - Nina/Bridget Fonda 1995 Tank Girl - Lori Petty 1995 Xena - Xena/Lucy Lawless 1996 Long Kiss Goodnight - Charlie Baltimore/Geena Davis 1997 Batman & Robin - Batgirl/Alicia Silverstone 1997 Stargate SG1 - Capt Samantha Carter/Amanda Tapping 1997 Tomorrow Never Dies - Wai Lin/Michelle Yeoh 1998 Buffy tVS - Faith/Eliza Dushku 1998 The Fifth Element - Leeloo/Milla Jovovich 1998 Mask of Zorro - Elena/Catherine Zeta-Jones 1999 The Matrix - Trinity/Carrie Anne Moss 1999 Farscape - Officer Aeryn Sun/Claudia Black 2000 Witchblade - Sara Pezzini/Yancy Butler 2000 Dark Angel - Max Gueverra/Jessica Alba 2000 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Michelle Yeoh 2000 Cleopatra 2525 - Helen Carter/Gina Torres 2000 Queen of Swords - Tessa Alvarado/Tessie Santiago 2001 Alias - Sydney Bristow/Jennifer Garner 2001 Tob Raider - Lara Croft/Angelina Jolie 2002 Resident Evil - Alice/Milla Jovovich 2002 Firefly - River Tam/Summer Glau 2002 Star Wars - Padme Amidala/Natalie Portman 2003 Lord of the Rings - Eowyn/Miranda Otto 2003 Underworld - Selene/Kate Beckinsale 2003 Terminator 3 - T-X/Kristianna Loken 2003 Kill Bill - The Bride/Uma Thurman 2003 Battlestar Galactica - Starbuck/Katee Sackhoff 2004 King Arthur - Guinevere/Keira Knightly 2004 Catwoman - Catwoman/Halle Berry 2004 Blade Trinity - Abigail Whistler/Jessica Biel 2004 Chronicles of Riddick - Kyra/Alexa Davalos 2004 Stargate Atlantis - Teyla Emmagen/Rachel Luttrell 2005 Aeon Flux - Aeon Flux/Charlize Theron 2005 Bones - Temperence Brennan/Emily Deschanel 2005 Bloodrayne - Rayne/Kristanna Loken 2005 Elektra - Jennifer Garner 2005 Fantastic Four - Sue Storm/Jessica Alba 2006 Ultra Violet - Ultra Violet/Milla Jovovich 2007 Last Legion - Mira/Aishwarya Rai 2007 Bionic Woman - Jamie Summers/Michelle Ryan 2007 Chuck - Sarah/Yvonne Strahovski 2008 Wanted - Fox/Angelina Jolie 2009 Dollhouse - Sierra/Dichen Lachman & Echo/Eliza Dushku

Not all of these are great, but fits your list: Barbarella BloodRayne Elektra Fifth Element (Milla kicked some serious ass) Firefly Farscape (Claudia Black was the best thing about that show) Fantastic Four (Jessica Alba) Road Warrior (Virginia Hey played zen woman in Farscape, but Warrior Woman in this flick) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Angelina) Species Stargate SG-1 (Amanda Tapping was brainy and kicked ass) Starship Troopers (Carmen Ibanez/Denise Richards & / Dizzy Flores / Dina Meyer ) Star Trek: Enterprise (Jolene was the best part) Tank Girl The Abyss (Lindsey was tougher than a whole room full of guys) Wanted (again Angelina) Weird Science (Lisa/Kelly Le Brock)

Kelly kicked butt in Weird Science? Don't remember a Lindsey in Abyss -ed. don't recall her kicking any butt. You sure? Who's butt did she kick? I thought the Starship Troopers chicks were weapons-dependant like Ripley. Didn't know Jolene was a butt kicker in Enterprise. Didn't think of anybody in Road Warrior as butt kicking except Mel.

They all received the same training as the men, and had to meet the same performance requirements, armed and unarmed.

I believe T'pal was a trained martial artist, but I don't recall ever seeing her make use of it in actual combat. She did however shoot a few folk in various episodes.

Yeah, Starship Troopers didn't seem to have much butt-kicking of anybody there, and unless Jolene did some, not that impressive. But I'll try to fit in the others as I get the details. Thanks, and keep them coming, and tell me which are not really fitting. I wouldn't have included Barbarella - maybe as cartoon, but not as Hanoi Jane.

I don't recall Uhura kicking butt - which scene?

Are those BSG chicks humans?

I'll go with bridget Fonda as Le Femme Nikita.

Is Jen Garner a butt kicker in Alias?

Are those BSG chicks humans? Well, are we? The series implied that we are descendants of Cylons/human hybrids.

I'll go with bridget Fonda as Le Femme Nikita.

Is Jen Garner a butt kicker in Alias?

T'Pol was a former Vulcan Intelligence Agent (with all the Black Ops Badassitude that entails).

And off the top of my head, she went hand-to-hand with a few Klingons (consecutively, not all at once) in one episode (after demonstrating on Travis as a sparring partner).

I recall being surprised by how little she used the nerve pinch --I only recall her using it on fellow crewmen who were under hostile influence (i.e., people who needed to be kept alive). She clearly wasn't the technical pacifist Spock was.

NCIS - Ziva David (Coti de Pablo)

Terminators I & II - Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton)

Fringe - Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv)

Silence of the Lambs - Clarice Starling (Jodi Foster)

All these ladies are weapons-familiar to some extent or another, but I wouldn't call them weapons-dependent. They are all at least primarily human, with the possible exception of Ziva David, who I suspect may belong to some category of angel or similar celestial being.

Had Jenette Vasquez down, then saw Jong had beat me to her (so to speak). Way to be there, Jong!

Even Purdey (Joanna Lumley) in the New Avengers could kick butt.

Actually, Lumley is still kicking butt today: I don't know what she did to this guy off camera, but he's obviously been broken:

...the guy should look on the bright side: most politicians have to pay good money for that sort of "discipline".

Okay, back the truck up. Padme/Amidala is a butt kicker but Ripley is weapons dependent? Padme used a gun in Episode 1, and fought a bit in Episode 2. In 3 she whined a lot and died.

Ripley didn't have much for weapons in Alien - she managed to survive when everyone else was killed, and killed the alien by blowing it out the airlock. In Aliens she took over the whole outfit, drove in to rescue to Marines when the Lieutenat had a meltdown, defended herself and Newt when a face crawler thingy attacked them... the list goes on. She only uses weapons at the end, and even then, she kills the queen using a loader and the airlock once again.

Sorry - I love Ripley. Didn't mean to rant

Does Jennifer Garner kick butt in Alias? Hell yeah, and she rarely uses a gun.

Starbuck in the new BSG is human. And kicks all kind of ass.

I would add Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) from Chuck, and Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss) from The Matrix.

I would add Kira Nerys in ST:DS9. She was the butt kickingest of all the ST women, IMHO.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Tommorow Never Dies,

Or Lucy Liu... Loved her in Payback and despite it being a kinda bad movie, I liked Ecks vs. Sever.

Hermione doesn't count for the magic and wizardry. Are the other 2 humans, not aliens or robots or magicians?

Katara's a Waterbender, which is a type of magic (though treated more as a martial art than Potteresque "point-and-click" spellcasting).

Teyla is human (though not from Earth).

It was one of those Saturday afternoon series, like Xena and Cleopatra 2525. It only lasted one season. They had an assortment of interesting characters. It was Zorro, but with a female lead.
