Can this really be called a remake, since it was based off a book and all?

Oh no, the zombies killed god!

You forgot "The Time Machine"...

Good Remake: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (pick any one you like)
Bad Remake: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (pick any one you hate)

In the interest of gratuitous point-stretching:

Good Remake: The Lord of the Rings (remember - there was an animated version of the first half)

Good Remake-ish: Twelve Monkeys ("inspired by" a French short).

Bad Remake-ish: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (remake of the towel/stage play/computer game/book/TV Show/LP/radio show).

Forthcoming potentially good/bad remake: Forbidden Planet
( http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/12/19/james-cameron-might-direct-that
-forbidden-planet-remake
/)

...potentially bad because, well, they're re-making Forbidden Planet - what could possibly (not) go wrong?

...potentially good because it sounds like James Cameron might be directing and J.Michel Straczynski (Babylon 5) writing it.

RIPWASH

Two come to mind that might just possibly get me in trouble

Good remakes:
The Italian Job
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Bad remakes:
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (I had such high hopes for that one and it failed me . . . BIG TIME!!!)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll add more later

Yeah IMO, because they incorporated elements of The Omega Man into it.

It was inferior because they were trying to fit in a two hour movie. What they gave us wasn't bad, just horribly attenuated.

I beg to differ, so differ I shall. I didn't say BETTER than the original, I said a good remake. I am a big fan of both actually. But in terms of story in general, in fact, the Depp/Burton version is much closer to the source material with the exception of Willy's childhood backstory. In the original, there was a TON of stuff added that wasn't even in the book and some things omitted. I mean Danny Elfman (one of my favorites) even used the actual Oompa Loompa lyrics from the book in his songs! And the Oopma Loompas appeared as they were described in book (not freakish orange skinned clown midgets). When I heard they were making the newer version I read the book to my kids, we watched the Wilder version and then the new version. I was just blown away. It was fantastic.

I beg to differ again. I don't think that the time frame was all that important and, as I understand it, the "source material" has gone through many changes. Each and every one had changes made to it. The book, LP, radio show, British TV version . . . all different. But my main gripe was that the funniest part of the book, to me, was Zaphod. Sam Rockwell was a great choice to portray him, but in taking away Zaphod's 2nd head shortly after his introduction (and having it hidden half the time before that) really detracted from his overall character. Not to mention that I don't think they even mentioned Slartibartfasts's award for outstanding fjord design.

I dunno. I may have to watch it again.

Considering that the original material was a radio play with a running time of under 3 hours, seems to me that it should have been pretty easy to fit into a 2 hour film, c.f. the film-maker's usual problem of condensing a 600 page novel...

I think the real problem was that it was just a Film That Didn't Need Making. We already knew all the jokes and (tragically) they aren't making any new ones.

Even the TV show wasn't as good as the radio version, although it was saved by the utterly, utterly brilliant animated narrator sequences.

I grew up with that. The great God PBS gave me that, Monty Python & The Prisoner.

PATSRULE

Really good remakes: Scarface and 3:10 to Yuma

Good Remake: Death Race

Bad Remake: The Longest Yard

Really bad remake: The Pink Panther

Really really really really bad remake: The Honeymooners

Its not even out yet, and it already makes me really angry because it will suck harder than Tracy Lords: The Karate Kid
