Fox has roped in a Western drama from "Chuck" executive producer Scott Rosenbaum.

The untitled project, from Warner Bros. TV and McG's studio-based Wonderland Sound and Vision, has landed a script commitment with a significant penalty.

Described as an epic Western with a sci-fi twist, the show will revolve around "a gunslinger caught between worlds" and will feature a nod to "Planet of the Apes," said Rosenbaum, who is executive producing with Wonderland's McG and Peter Johnson.

"What I'm really interested in is the revamping of the Western genre where you still have all of the iconic Western themes and iconic Western tropes but the idea is that it will feel incredibly contemporary and will introduce the Western to a whole new generation," Rosenbaum said.

Rosenbaum, who was under a blind script deal at WBTV, had been seeking to do a Western with sci-fi elements for years. He mentioned the idea in a passing conversation with Johnson, who also is an exec producer on "Chuck."

Johnson, in turn, had just met with Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly and exec vp Matt Cherniss, who had told him that they were looking to do a revamped Western this development season.

Rosenbaum had worked with Reilly and Cherniss at FX, where they were entertainment president and senior vp, respectively, and he was an exec producer on "The Shield." He pitched his idea to them, and the project was quickly set up at network.

Wonderland has strong ties with Fox, where the company landed its first series, "Fastlane" and "The O.C."

Wonderland is behind the network's new drama "Human Target," which joins the company's returning series "Chuck" and "Supernatural."

Rosenbaum is repped by UTA and attorney Michael Gendler.

Hey, we have a man-ape-gone-wrong in our show! So, it could still be about Firefly.

Yeah. Something about people history stepped on, living on the fringes of space; you know, kinda in the future, but with American Civil War type guns and all. You know, something never done before.

For crying the fuck out-loud!

Really, people... the powers in charge seven years ago were stupid and short-sighted, so now everyone that follows is guilty...? Time to let it go, dontcha think? Stories have been getting recycled for centuries. It would be like screaming at Joss about using the same old "star-crossed lovers" thing for Buffy that Will Shakespear did in Romeo and Juliet - gosh, no one's thought of that before! ZOMG!!1 WTF? Does Joss think we're stupid??? That's SO been done!

Joss wasn't the first to think of a "space western" and he won't be the last.

All of this has happened before, and it will happen again.

Yeah, the nod to "Planet of the Apes" makes me think post-apocalyptic "new dark age." The world is a wasteland, ruled by mutants ("injuns") and lone wanderers ("bandits" & "gunslingers"), with a few isolated villages.

Really, the "caught between two worlds" thing is part of every Western; the cowboy hero is a noble savage who can only exist between the civilized world (with its sheriffs, judges, and law-makers) and the savage frontier (where there are no laws or rules save what one carries inside oneself). Too far in one direction, he becomes a bound-by-the-rules part of the establishment, too far in the other and he becomes a bandit, ruled by his own appetites.

Looking for simplistic knee-jerk reactions? You've come to the right place!

Because, of course, Joss was the first person ever in the history of everything to think of combining the sci-fi and western genres. Except all those other guys that did it before him, that is.

Ain't about not being the first. But it's kinda sore, don't ya think, that FOX first even refused to air Heart of Gold, adamantly opposed to Western themes for their show, and now come back and invite other writers to do just that! So, I'd say, if they want to redeem themselves, then let them be man enough to admit they were wrong, and bring back Firefly already!

I doubt anything will ever come close to the magical chemistry that Firefly achieved. Firefly has pretty much ruined every other show for me, as I find them all mostly un-watchable due to the hackneyed writing, boring subject matter, and mediocre casts. Firefly may have used some time-tested themes in some of its' episodes, but they also delivered a product that was fresh, fun, bold, and unique.

I liked Galaxy Quest and the theme behind it very much. That perhaps is something that might be interesting to see on TV.....a group of hardly-working actors from a cancelled sci-fi show somehow ending up involved in real space adventures with extraterrestrials.

"Sore"? No, not at all. First and foremost, "Heart of Gold" was a HORRIBLE, overly cliche, poorly scripted episode.

Second, the people that refused to air it are LONG GONE FROM FOX. Why does this not register with people? So many people seem to think FOX is some sort of evil sentient entity that fucked over Firefly, completely forgetting that it's the people in charge - who have since been fired or moved to "bigger and better" - who were the sole cause of this travesty due to their short-sightedness and inability to think outside the box, as it were. So, "Sore"? Not so much.
Quote:

New ownership, new rules, my friend. As I said - and as others keep saying over and over and over - the people at FOX responsible for screwing the pooch with Firefly no longer have anything to do with any decisions the company makes. Why the hell should someone have to "redeem themself" for something they didn't do? And more over, there are people in higher positions there who already have admitted that they wouldn't have treated Firefly or Joss the way they were treated back then. Need proof, do some research. Not good enough? How about the fact that FOX is willing to suffer through a second season of Dollhouse, even though its ratings - particularly the first half of the season - were abysmal? Still not good enough? Too bad.

Firefly as we all came to know and love it will not be back in that same form; it's just not feasible. Actors and writers have moved on, the industry landscape has changed, and any attempt to "re-imagine" or "re-make" Firefly has a better than average chance of completely letting us down.

I'm really not trying to be a bitch here, but after reading the same whinging about the same things for nearly the past seven years, it gets a bit tiresome. I'm just trying to point out the facts and the reality of the situation, which apparently isn't a popular practise.

I agree with the second point whole heartedly, but I do think there is a chance of still having a great show within the 'Verse even with a totally different cast. Think about ST: TOS, ST: TNG, DS9, etc. Each had its set of endearing characters (not as good as Firefly, but still...)

Could be that's true. 'Twas not the reason FOX didn't air it, though. They specifically told Joss "No Western themes!" And, good on him, he did it anyway. :)

Quote:

Well, they DID fuck over Firefly. May have been due to a perfectly legitimate conflict of interest, but it's what they did nonetheless. I'm just trying to point out the facts and the reality of the situation.

Everybody's so mad... In the meantime, you make my point exactly: FOX has had good reason to redeem itself: we know it, they know it, and they have indeed tried doing so giving Dollhouse a second chance (which, in earnest, it probably didn't deserve). Just sayin' that if they felt the need to redeem themselves, I'd rather they'd given Firefly a second chance.

Quote:

Yes, it could become a masterful job of muck-up: there's always that chance when you create something of exceptional beauty. But did Rembrandt ever stop painting after his Nightwatch, just because he feared that anything thereafter would be 'less than'? That's a poor motivation for not even trying. What was it again that Zoe said in that episode you despise so much? "I'm not so afraid of losing something that I won't try having it." Words to live by.

As someone recently pointed out, all of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again. It comes with being here for nearly the past seven years. As for the rest, maybe you shoulda stuck with your wiles.

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

LOL! Funny comic!

Also, this show concept reminds me a lot of an RPG I play, DEADLANDS, specifically the Deadlands: Hell On Earth version.

The first being Western crossed with gothic horror.
The latter being that + muties in post-apocalyptic age. They even take it further with Deadlands Lost Colony where mankind abandons Earth only to find evil lurks in every corner of the 'verse...but I digress.

I will probably watch this, should it come to fruition. I am a big fan of westerns, especially when they take a twist (Briscoe County Jr. for example).

And I am quite the anti-Fox/Joss-supporting fool, but at some point, they have to redeem themselves, and if they do it by stealing Joss' fundamental idea? Well, what better form of flattery.

Besides, I already watch Dollhouse. So there ya go.

I wish I could. However it's gotten to the point in my relationship with the network as a viewer that I really have no faith in Fox. They've cancelled a lot of shows I liked (Firefly, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Keen Eddie, Arrested Development, The Tick, John Doe, Wonderfalls, Drive, Terminator). They've handled quite a few of those cancelled shows so horribly so that they never had a decent chance to establish themselves. Plus, there were various other shows that they kept pushing way past their prime or forcing change upon (Prison Break for the first part, Dollhouse and countless others for the latter), which just killed the franchises for me. And let's not even get started on the reality and shows that are often so out there and offensive I cringe at the commercials.

Why risk the heartache? I had a chance to see Human Target awhile back before it aired and I passed it up because I don't want to get sucked into some show with potential, only to have it be ripped away. Glee is the only piece of new programming I'm investing in because my extreme love of dark humor, satire and broadway overrides everything. Other than that I'm going to be giving Dollhouse a second chance (That was a huge letdown, but Epitaph One renewed my hope) and occasionally watching House which just doesn't engage me like it used to.

The rest of my viewing time will be spent around shows on NBC and ABC, cable scripted shows and web series.

Well, to be fair, the screwing up on Sliders started with the writers (which is why Rhys-Davies left --he felt the audience's intelligence was being insulted).

OMG!, "Altered States" thats been done before. j/k j/k, don't flame me.

Fringe falls under "If it's good, I'll watch it." category and I do. One of only three shows I watch.

Actually , "Altered States" is one of the inspirations that the creators of FRINGE acknowledge , along with more obvious things like X-Files...

Even after only 1 season , I think FRINGE is better than X-Files , and look forward to where it goes...

Guess I'm just a good man.
Well, I'm alright.

I've got my money on thirteen episodes. Probably not that many will air, but the extras will be used to fill out the DVD set.
