I went in with lowish expectations , came out shocked and awed !

This was a FUN film , and the best Sci-Fi in quite a while...

Bruce Willis delivers again , and the subject matter reminds me of Blade Runner in ways...

Rosamund Pike is a Kaylee-esque beauty , too .

Was it really that good? I haven't heard much good about it since it came out, but I was thinking about seeing it.

I saw it, and honestly thought it had some great ideas, but ultimately didn't deliver.

It was a decent film, I definitely wasn't bored, but at the same time, it wasn't fantastic.

Yes .

Do see it , I was slightly on the fence about it , but a young lady that I know 'accidentally' saw it , and liked it .

And , she hates almost everything at the cinema .

She took me back to see it , her second viewing , but my first .

I will also go to see it again...

The production values are ab-fab , the story is spare and taut , and it lacks the wretched excess of a Bruckheimer-type film...

While watching , I found myself thinking ,
" This looks like a graphic-novel , only done right..."

Turns out , it was adapted from a graphic novel , and that lends itself to the spare style exhibited within the film...

I was shocked afterward to find that the movie clocked in under 90 minutes , which is good , because I could edit
about 20 minutes from most movies these days ,
and not miss anything...
Don't worry though , you get your money's worth .

This film looks to be underappreciated and not loved enough in its initial outing , like the classic Blade Runner .

I'll probably wait for DVD. Not much time for the theater lately, and Zombieland is my current priority....

Though it just occured to me, I've seen all of Mostow's prior films in the theatre.

'...A film about robots that might find its biggest fans among Luddites, "Surrogates" is an intense and eerily plausible sci-fi thriller. Set in a future that uncannily resembles the present day (it must be one of the first pictures with a car chase featuring a Prius), Jonathan Mostow's smart speculative suspenser imagines a time when people can live through ideal versions of themselves while they sit wired up at home. Commercial prospects would seem solid but for the misleading and off-putting ad campaign, with very good international and ancillary careers in store for this Bruce Willis starrer.

Effective science fiction often reflects the preoccupations and anxieties of the moment when it is made, and "Surrogates," based on a graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, certainly speaks to the way people today increasingly live on their computers and other electronic devices and project themselves into the world through them. The idea that one day we may need to choose between living life directly or virtually provides the dramatic tension for the script by Mostow's "Terminator 3" collaborators John Brancato and Michael Ferris.'

Whoops. That right there is just about enough to keep me away.

So I was walking out of Zombieland this Saturday, my second viewing, and I hear this from a group of young ladies behind me who had just walked out of Surrogates:

Select to view spoiler:

"I was so surprised when it turned out the Prophet was a surrogate"

Is it ruined now? Please, tell me if you've seen it.

Since you don't know who/what "Prophet" is, it shouldn't bother you. Just forget you heard that. And if I elaborate or explain any more about why or how it shouldn't matter, I WILL spoiler it for you in a backhanded way. So that's all I can say about that.

I don't know why nobody is mentioning Gamer in the same context as Surrogates. Gamer seems more like Surrogates on crank.

Well... I wouldn't say it totally sucked, but the fact alone that I open with saying it didn't totally suck, I guess that's indicative of something already. It was way too reminiscent of "I, Robot," for one (both cast and plot-wise). The CGI certainly looked good, but the story just doesn't deliver. Like "I, Robot," they want to wax philosophical, but just don't. Which is sad, because the premise of this flic was promising. It can't hold a candle to Blade Runner (not even close); and even A.I. was much, much better.

Is it bad? No. I would indeed put it on par with "I, Robot." It's entertaining, has good to great CGI, and has an excellent lead character in Bruce Willis (who actually DID deliver). Rosamund Pike? Eh, not my type, really. But she acted okay.
