I don't know how AMC could've even dreamed that they could improve on the original.

EDIT: Found some cool clips on YouTube!

Yeah, everybody's recommending "avoid at all costs".

Kinda knew this would be the case when the project was first announced!

I actually had high hopes. F*king suits. It was an anti-establishment piece in '69, how the Hell could I expect it to translate well to the 21st?
Oh well, it served its economic purpose, I guess. I must now purchase the original on DVD to clear my mind of this mess.
I am a prisoner.

They tried to make "6" an everyman.
*FAIL*
Wide-eyed disbelief sucks in an agent.
And the Village sucks.

Well, Patrick McGoohan had such a unique look and sound about him that nobody could ever hope to duplicate.

BTW, I actually met Mr. McGoohan when I was working at the Westside Pavilion about 20 years ago!
I told him how my folks would watch The Prisoner religiously when I was 6, but that all I remembered was being terrified by that "big white floating ball" ("Rover").
He just shrugged and said, "Yeah, well, they're still out there!"

Possibly. It's servicable TV, I guess. Just pales to the point of white-out next to the original.

I tried watching the original a few years back, but the acting and shooting style was so dated, I gave up.

The new version is actually more engrossing, because it uses more familiar acting styles and production values.

Acting style? Like the massively repeated mimicking of Spielburg inspired, "oh my gawd what's happening" facial expressions? Like Chrisisall said, #6 is way too uncool to have ever been a secret agent for any functioning nefarious government service. Oh, wait a sec., in this take he's an American.... Okay, I'm likely easily trumped on this score.

Dated shooting style: yeah, it's really impressive having two second edits throughout, regardless of the scene. Because it's of paramount importance to assume the entire audience is ADD afflicted, or at least it's important for some reason to make them feel that way.

The story is tame, in that it doesn't dare to take a shot at anything controversial, nor does it appear to be willing to take on anything of a political nature.

Unlike some others who have chimed in on this thread, I do like the Village. Cool A-frame dwellings in an appropriately desolate environment where it's obvious it's never going to snow work for me. Kind of sets up a melding of seemingly senseless over-engineering within an ambiguous psychological environment. Doesn't nearly enough make up for the horrid direction and lame story.

Okay, you're right on that one, it's DIFFERENT than MgGoohan's village, not worse. I stand corrected.

Lazy writing choice IMO. That's like re-making Firefly with Mal as a a flight attendant.

I watched it as it premiered sunday, monday, and Tuesday. I gave it an honest, fair effort. I have NO idea what I saw. Moment to moment the whole experience was constant muddled confusion. Towards the end I was FORCING myself to watch. It felt like Andromeda Seasons 3-5. It's certainly a bad sign when you look forward to the commercials as they offer a break from the labor of paying attention.

At least AMC led into the Sunday premier with a Mad Max Marathon. Mad Max 1...now there's a film that should be remade!

Do you think you can oversimplify and over-react a bit more?

There are far more differences between today's performance and productions styles than the surface elements you mention.

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

I DVR'd it - at 21 minutes I dumped it - I lost 2 more minutes than you!
It's bad when you're tempted to fast forward through the show to get to the commercials.
