8 ft wave? Isn't that "Surf's UP!" rather than "Holy S**T!"?

Except for regular peeps...?

Reports from the Big Island (per CNN) say the water is receading, the first signs of a coming tsumani.

And the Chilean Olympic Team will not march in the Closing Ceremonies. They are trying to get home to Chili right now.

When I was in California I was greeted by a 6.0 earth quake (early 1980's in the Monterey, CA) It's the weirdest feeling, like the ground has turned to jello and the walls waved. You just don't trust the ground.

Fortunately it was over before my brain realized what was going on and the building was new and built to earthquake standards.

There were more the 4 years I was in CA but they were more like the rumbling of truck on a highway. And there was one tsumani warning while I was there and the waterfront of Monterey was evacuated but nothing happened.

Haken, hope you and everyone else comes out of this OK.

I have faith that the damage will be minimal in most areas there.

I mean, won't it? That's a bit of warning they got.

The big wave's over an hour late now. I hope it just dissapated or some such.

HAKEN

Likes to mess with stuffs.

Thank you all for your concerns. Everything is okay since I live 1000+ feet above sea level.

The news media here overreacted a bit and hyped the event to the point that the rest of the world probably believed that we were going to see Hollywood sized waves of water crashing down on us.

In reality, the rise in the ocean was no more than maybe a few feet, not enough to flood the beaches or streets, and certainly nothing close to what happened in California a few weeks back or the flooding that goes on in some other states annually.

The Civil Defense here treated the event as a disastrous one and I commend their efforts in being very organized and well prepared. I actually feel a lot safer now knowing that there is a plan in place for handling this sort of thing in an orderly fashion.

Anyway, everything is good. Thank you for all the concerns.

I would have thought Tahiti, Fiji, & New Zealand would be in greater danger, but I haven't heard anybody mention them.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

A friend of mine's parents are in in Hawaii. We fully expected Jim to show up along the coast, standing behind some news reporter and waving to the camera.

Glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Bones: "Don't 'rawr' her!"
Booth: "What? she'rawred' me first."

I've heard from friends in New Zealand and Australia and all is well. The media there hyped the tsumani too.
