For years on this site I've espoused that the 4 greatest storytellers of my time have been:
Joss Whedon
Frank Herbert
Neil Gaiman
George RR Martin

Which is why my heart went aflutter this afternoon when I was directed to this link: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/02/hbo-will-play-game-of-thr
ones
/

That's right...George RR Martin's masterpiece that started it all is coming to HBO. Casting is underway and the rumor I hear currently is that Sean Bean may be the actor tapped to play Lord Stark.

If anyone has never read A Game of Thrones or the 3 subsequent books, you should stop what you are doing and order copies of amazon.

I'd rather see Firefly season 2, but for the moment I can settle for AGoT on TV. Finally something good is happening.

Uh, you're a bit behind, news-wise. Casting, as well as the first episode, were done a while back. Yes, Sean Bean is the lead, along with Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage.

HBO just picked it up for a full season yesterday.

A real newsflash would be "Book 5 finally to be released". Seriously he is starting to move in on Stephen King territory ala The Dark Tower series for biggest gap between book releases. If he is isn't careful the TV series will catch up with the books, assuming each season will span an entire novel.

A friend of mine remarked to me today that if HBO isn't careful, they will run into aging child actor problems ala "Walt" on Lost.

Whomever they tap for Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Rickon...they had better plan on some continued shooting from A Game of thrones up and through A Feast for Crows, or things are not going to work out for them.

And yes, there is the continued problem that Dance with Dragons is not complete. Nor are the final 2 books that Martin believes are coming later...

He does his best to comment on this subject on his website:

They plan to adapt one book per season - assuming they go beyond this first one at all. HBO is kinda known at this point for starting up expensive series that get good ratings - but can't afford to keep them going unless they get GREAT ratings (thus the early deaths of Rome and Deadwood).

Funny thing about Martin: on facebook, you can become a fan of "Please don't die, George R. R. Martin" (which is dedicated to GRRM actually finishing the series before something happens to him).

For those interested, there have been some great updates on winter-is-coming.net about the status of the shooting.

Tazmin Merchant has left the role of Daenerys which is a shame since she looked so much like the description of the character. But, stuff happens you know... This is how Morena ended up playing Inara so perhaps it's a good thing. We'll see.

Also, HBO has finished the offical trailer for the pilot but is holding it close to the chest. So far they have only showed it in a meeting of investors at HBO with no word as to when it will be available for viewing by the rest of us.

Updates are available here:
