That bad movies are made because studio execs love money and care little for art, is a notion that keeps my blood hot on cold nights. Therefore I quote The Filthy Critic ranting against remade movies:

"They couldn't care less whether we get our money's worth or get a transcendent experience. They just want their God damn paycheck. I've railed against indifference before, the way those pricks in L.A. take their golden ticket to make movies and wipe their asses with it. I've ranted about how the system is set up to let cowards with no new ideas but a good sense of what will safely make money are allowed to run the machine. It still boggles my mind, though. I can't understand why we let assholes who hate us sell us such generic pablum. Movies could be wonderful. Movies could be magic. They often are. There are people out there with the ability to make that so." - www.bigempire.com/filthy/catsanddogs2.html

...especially as we've already had an animated "Fantastic Voyage" series and a comedy version (Innerspace).

...bit they could make it in 3D!!!

Maybe they should wait until nanotech has advanced to the point where it can be filmed "on location" (not so far-fetched if you don't actually miniaturize the actors - they can be green-screened - just the cameras). Please nominate an A-list actor to provide the location - sounds like a job for Keanau to me!)...

Meanwhile, I have mixed feelings about the impending Forbidden Planet remake. On the one hand: unnecessary remake of cheesy classic with outstanding visuals for its time; OTOH story by J. Michael Straczynski...

What I'd like to see is:

* Proper film adaptation of War of the Worlds true to the book (i.e. set in 19th Century England) with some of the Jeff Wayne music worked into the score.

* The Golden Compass (and the rest of the books) re-done as an anime by someone like Studio Ghibli.

Meanwhile, it's been literally months since they re-made Invasion of the Body Snatchers again - what's keeping them

All joking apart - anything can be remade if its a good remake that re-interprets the premise in an interesting way. I quite liked some aspects of the Spielberg WOTW (how would modern society cope with an invasion - and the film almost stuck to the original in the sense that we watch this from the POV of Mr Everyman, not the Big Damn Hero who saves the world - although they couldn't resist fortuitously meeting up with Mrs Exposition at one point). Re-making Time Machine and The Day The Earth Stood Still to reflect modern anxiety about the environment rather than 1950s anxiety about nuclear Armageddon made sense (whatever the flaws of the final films). All joking apart, "Body Snatchers" is a good vehicle for examining the bogeyman de jour (plus, it makes for cheaper special effects).

The problem with remakes are (a) too many re-makes and sequels; not enough originality and (b) remakes that could have been interesting but were made badly. There's nothing wrong with a re-make in itself.

Oh hell yes, and if you couldn't get Ghibli then head down to Gonzo and grab up the team which worked on Last Exile - although you could make a case that the latter might do Golden Compass a bit better than Ghibli, from an artistic viewpoint.

Either way, I'd be practically jumping up and down outside the door waiting for it, which, given my unholy patience with most stuff like this, says much about how bad I'd want it... cause we WANTS IT, Preeecciousss, yes we do, hehehehe.

Oh, and just to poke a pin in anyone who might know what I am talkin about, Bandai has licensed K-ON! for region one, and there WILL BE an english dub.

I'll remain unimpressed until I hear what the music sounds like.

No go areas (for the sake of this thread - as I'm inclined to agree with STORYMARK about the original still remaining so why worry) but...

Creature From The Black Lagoon: It's perfect.
Jason and the Argonauts: No need. You can't better Ray Harryhausen
Explorers: No new tweens need apply. It's ace already.
Gremlins I & II: Dante nailed it, so leave it alone!

Ones I wouldn't mind:

Well there's only one that could benefit from technology and thus broaden it's scope for the epic and that would be a feature TV series of:

Ulysees 31: There is enough visual imagery from this animation that could look sublime if updated. Especially with some of the images that Hubble has been picking up from the depths of space for the last twenty years... Give the gig to ZOIC have them render it in 3D and you'll have a class sci-fi show.

Agreed - and I think they've already proven that fact quite adequately with Clash of the Titans...

*twitch*
Oh I sincerely hope they are not that stupid, generally music/themes remain undubbed, cause they just don't bloody WORK translated, and they sound awful, awful, awful - I think the only one I've got where they did make that mistake is The Irresponsible Captain Tylor and as cringe-worthy as it was, I think they learned the lesson, since the followup OVAs don't have that problem.

I actually like K-On! ridiculous that it is, so I hope they don't screw it up.

Oh, and Sawako is just awesome, period.

The Beck dub was good, though that's mostly down to Greg Ayres being an actual singer in addition to voice acting. I dunno; if they can find some real singers and not just actors (see: Minmei ) I wouldn't be averse to some English "covers."

And yes, Sawa-chan is awesome.
