Okay, I was fine with the fact that the original Pirates movie was gonna be the only one I ever owned, the 3rd one being so bad and all (making the 2nd one useless by extension).
So, out of nowhere I hear that the fourth is pretty not bad. I took a chance, with my family.

We loved it. Not as amazing as the first, but a solid entry with a well thought out story. Funny without being needlessly goofy. Dramatic even, at times.
I can't wait to own this one!

Thoughts?

It's a good flick. Suffers a tiny bit from not really having a Male romantic lead but otherwise a solid pirates with a side order of zombies film.

That was the missionary's position, yes.

Personally, I loved it almost as much as the first, though I think the missionary and the mermaid ended up a bit underdeveloped due to Jack and Barbossa (though I loved watching Jack and Barbossa, so I'm not sure what I would've done differently).

I also loved the clear friendship between Jack and Gibbs. It makes sense since these two have stuck together through everything, but it was never really demonstrated in the previous movies.

Yes, but as you note we didn't get any real development of the character. Minor quibble though.

DREAMTROVE

Some folks complained "too many subplots" I thought that there could have been more attention to the subplots.

I quite enjoyed it.

Sorry, too tired to re-review at the moment, but if you want to dredge up some subjects from those threads for discussion I'm more up for that than any of this political nonsense. ;)

As I said before I really enjoyed it. The first is still the best in my opinion, but this is the next best since no. 2 was weird and no. 3 made no sense whatsoever. So yeah, this one was quite enjoyable.

And yes, I laughed when Jack said the missionary's position line too.

Well it works better than the last two but it's still not as strong as the first one, and I'm afraid I'm one of the ones who moaned about all the doublecrosses. I understand that they're pirates and thereby not entirely wholesome characters, but the doublecross is an overused and unnecessary contrivance left over from the debacle of 2&3.

Were the writers true of their worth they'd have found creative ways of extracting the characters from difficult plot points.

At it's best when Depp and Rush are playing against each other.

I pretty much agree with everyone else here that it is a good, fairly solid movie that falls somewhere between Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest with At World's End trailing far behind.
The sub-plots could have done with more attention (or less sub-plots) but that applies to many films. Jack is still very likeable in his rogueishess and it was great to see Gibbs still playing his part.

All in all a welcome return to the franchise but can they do it again?

Well 'L' I bet they can and will. That's been the problem for me. They're too much the same.

I just wish they'd actually explore the Caribbean a little more too. I mean that is the title. The Caribbean is beautiful and they really haven't explored the islands or the islanders. There's so much history there to tap into, but they seem to constantly ignore this.

Yeah the double-crosses can be a bit much but I kind of didn't mind it for the most part and I was expecting it because it was in the other movies. I can see why some folks don't like it.

I have to agree that they should explore the Caribbean more and use it's history. They are obviously going to stick with the supernatural so why not take a real historical event or situation and add a supernatural twist to it. Personally I've always liked that scenario when it's done well enough and they have the right set up in Pirates. Much like they took the idea of Davy Jones Locker and put their own spin on the story.

I must not have been in the right frame of mind or something when I saw this movie, because I didn't enjoy it at all, and all I hear is people saying how great it was.

"Haha, mine is an evil laugh."
