Chris buddy, I just picked this up on Blu-Ray.
Have you seen this yet? Let me hear your thoughts.

My thoughts are this:
Watched it over the summer, liked it quite a bit. Watched it last night and liked it even more. The deleted scenes add much to the film(for Apes fans) and wish a few of them were added back in the film in a new cut.
I'm gonna have to make a new "favorite POTA films" list.
MAybe a little later on.

Coming from a die hard APES fan, I like this movie much better than CONQUEST. CGI was very well done.

Oh My Lawgiver!!!!
This was one of the most amazing movies I've seen in this century.
Thanks everyone, for egging me on to see it.
No spoilery details here (just SEE it!), but in vague capsule:
The good: most everything.
The bad: not much at all IMO.
The could-have-been-better: an homage to Jerry Goldsmith in the music department would have been nice.
The CGI was very CGI in spots. But, y'know, limitations in FX was always an APES thing.
The great: the writing!

I'm officially blown away.

Glad you liked it. It is a worthy addition to the series, although I keep meaning to get hold of and watch the second film onwards, it's been too long since I've seen them.

I thought it was great (and obvious) how they made you side with the apes, you felt for them, especially Caeser. It was nice to see him gradually turn from his upbringing and move to the apes. Even the humans were okay but there could have been more chemistry between Franco and Pinto, although this was obviously a side plot and not overly important.

This would definitely have to fall into the 'Surprise Of The Year' category. When it was first announced I wasn't expecting much from it, even the trailer didn't wow me. But I heard good things just after release and after seeing it I consider it one of the best films this year.

And Chris, you comment on there being no reference to Jerry Goldsmith but I assume you caught the other references - Charlton Heston on a TV screen, the Icarus launch and disappearance and the classic lines from the original film.

It was a magnificent idea to not straight-up remake the original classic. That's like breaking into a building with an impenetrable ground floor. And since it's based on paradoxes, the ground floor is also the top level. So they went in from the side. Smart.
Lookin' forward to the sequel.

They seemed to have sequels in mind, but I have not heard anything about it yet.

Yeah so was I.
It just has that classic APES feel to it. Everything from the thought provoking premise to the bloody final battle.

Yeah, to put it mildly. I remember seeing the first trailer and rolling my eyes. Thinking Captain America, and Green Lantern would be magnificent, and RISE would suck. Well It turns out I was Disappointed big time with both of those films(Cap was OK, but I was just kind of bored and it didn't really do anything for my taste). Green Lantern...Ummm nearly walked out but paying the premium 3-D price, I just couldn't do it.

When I watched Rise I thought I was in for more of the same. When I walked out of the theater with a smile from ear to ear I felt like a new person again.

HKCAVALIER

Hey y'all,

Saw this last night. Sorry to say--shocked a little--but I didn't like it. I thought I'd at least LIKE it, y'know?--maybe not love it or think it was great, but right now, um, Mark Walberg's lookin' pretty damn good! I still think Tim Roth is the best thing that ever happened to a chimpanzee costume.

Good CGI, better than I expected, but the plot was soooooooo nothing you didn't see in the trailer--less, in a way, 'cause it implied all manner of exciting things that simply never happened in the actual movie. So, spoiler alert?

Select to view spoiler:

I thought the primate sanctuary had EVIL HOUSE OF HORROR written all over it. Why would any sane man let these mustache twirling sadists have his beloved chimp? It was cartoonishly obvious where that was headed. AND THEN, the actual abuse the apes suffered was pretty...tame after the hype. If not tame, I'd say, at least, banal. There was more abuse going on at the actual research facility than the Dickensian monkey prison.

And then to end where they did? Immediately after the trailer, as it were? I mean, I was expecting some kinda "rise" going on, some kinda "planet" of the apes, not just the "cozy island" of the apes. And then tack on a MAJOR plot element in a little power point presentation playing over the end credits??? Tell me y'all who liked it didn't just gloss over the credit sequence when you looked back fondly on your viewing experience.

Aw, nuts, now Chrisisall's gonna think I hate everything. Again. I liked Daybreakers. I didn't see that coming, but I thought it was smart and emotionally compelling and I'm always pleasantly shocked when Ethan Hawke puts in a good performance.

HKCavalier

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Hey Chris.

Glad you finally went and watched it. It is rather good isn't it?

You make a good point about the little homage to Goldsmith, given that there were nods elsewhere to the original.
