If the trailer is any indication, I say it's definitely the coming thing.

What say you?

I read a ton of ERB books in my younger years. Loved & collected them, along with my collection of REH (Conan) books. I am waiting eagerly for the new John Carter movie to come out early next year, though to say that I’m feeling the movie industry is becoming awash with fantasy/SciFi as of late. Super heroes, assassins, spies, spacemen, creatures of the under world & zombies are saturating the big silver screen. I’m afraid so much so that the paying public will loose interest.

Caught Sherlock Holmes this past weekend and really liked it. Seems Mr. Holmes coulda taught Bruce Lee a thing or two.

There will always be an audience that will enjoy movies as these. But if there are too many, I afraid the coin will just not be there. Hope JC of M does well. Box office enough to get a sequel. Yet in 2012 I hope Joss hasn’t given up on FF. He’s the one that talked me into watching in the first place with his bonus speech at the end of Serenity. Maybe a return to the small screen in an mini-movie three parter?

Hey C.

I'm avoiding any trailers for this one as I'm actually really looking forward to it. I'm somewhat curious to see what these Pixar Directors will do with live action.

Thereafter I'm in two minds about film continuity at the moment. I traditionally have liked the idea of movie sagas, but recently I'm starting to wonder if a film isn't better off for being just a single event.

That said I if John Carter is a success I can't see the studio leaving it at just the one film.

I read all the JCoM books so I'm looking forward to the films a great deal. I like what I've seen so far but (and this will sound a little funny) they look like they're made for a younger audience than LOTR & even SW - dunno, they just do to me so far. I do not think Tars Tarkis/Martians look up to the same level of sophisticated rendering that the Avatarians did. But the stories are pure fun adventure and the "look" is pretty cool - I can't see them not making a trilogy out of these.

Well, I mostly closed my eyes when they showed it during CHUCK, but what I *DID* see looked amazing.

And, an animation director did the last Mission Impossible movie which I heard is excellent!

Don't get your hopes up and you may have fun. Me, I found the movie really exasperating. Plot-wise, they solved every crisis at the last possible moment--it got tedious knowing they were gonna solve every problem with only milliseconds to spare; the physics were beyond Die Hard levels of ludicrous (the human body simply cannot take the amount of punishment these people take--at one point, Tom is fighting the bad guy and BG executes a perfect knee-break, I mean perfect, with crunchy sound effects & everything and Tom is still standing, albeit with a limp) and the technology was G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra cartoonish at times. Geez.

What I'm trying to say, Chris, is: as disappointed as I was with Serenity, it beats hell out of MI:IV. My advice: just watch MI:III again, good flick.

I hope John Carter is a huge hit, but from the trailer, and the relative lack of buzz it has outside of scifi fans, Im not holding my breath.

Im betting folks at Disney are nervous as hell. It's on of the most expensive films ever. It'll have to be one of the top 5 films ever to justify any sequels, they've said.

Though I will toss in and say that IMHO, Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol was a great action flick. Ill have to see it again to decide how it compares to 3 (my current favorite of the series). Better direction and humor in this one, but 3 had a better villain and plot.

However, MI3 feels like "Alias, staring Tom Cruise" whereas this had it's own identity (even though it is, in many ways, a direct sequel to 3) so it gets points for that.

Many years ago Tom was killed, and replaced by an evil robot from the future. Underneath, it's a hyper-alloy combat chassis - micro processor-controlled, fully armored. Very tough. But outside, it's living human tissue - flesh, skin, hair, blood, grown for the studios.

Hello,

I saw the new trailer, but I actually liked the "My Body is a Cage" trailer better. I thought it had the mood and mystery needed to capture an audience unfamiliar with the material.

LWAVES

I remember a thread about JC of M a ways back on here and at the time it was the first I'd ever heard of it, I knew literally nothing. Seeing this thread I read the comments and headed off to watch the trailer.

So, coming at this from a complete outsiders point of view I really wasn't at all impressed. It just looks like a huge CGI-fest and I'd compare it to the trailers for the Clash Of The Titans or Conan remakes. Another one man army fighting against big monsters (or aliens in this case) and saving the day.
Maybe I'm missing something that you guys get from the source material. If my decision to watch the movie was to be based solely on the trailer I don't even think it would qualify as a download. I'd probably wait until it was on Sky Movies.

I don't mean this in a harsh way but it is the impression I get. Hopefully it will be good but we'll have to see nearer the time. I'll keep my mind open as you guys seem to like it.

I just glanced a bit at the trailer trying to cast aside my fascination with the source material that began with the 70's Marvel comics series

and I have to say I really do understand where you're coming from. And it IS about a one man army saving the day, btw. Another "White man rescues the indigenous people" tale, as it were.
The interesting parts for me are that his character is initially looked down upon by the Green Men, as one even lower than the Red-types.
Then comes the born&raised-in-higher-gravity surprise.
Plus: he's not saving anyone from evil western Earth dudes (like Avatar), but from another indigenous & otherwise unbeatable people that belong to the planet.
Now, if they just get Deja Thoris right- not another dopey hot damsel in distress, but a real character- this movie might be great imo.
If not, then at least it might be a reasonably fun one-off for us Carter fans.

Chris, bingo >>> Then comes the born&raised-in-higher-gravity surprise.<<<
That was the big ah-hah! thing for me when reading the books. It meant that even I could be a super hero... if I got transported to Mars... like next Tuesday would be good.
ERB's Martian world is very cool and rich & Tars Tarkas - as good a friend as you could ever have and he's 8 feet tall and has 4 arms.
And Dejah Thoris - what Chris says. The actress and the designers look of her is great so far imho, the accent - meh.

Hey C. I read in Empire I think, that the action pretty much doesn't stop for Brad Birds Mission Impossible. I must admit that worries me...
Van Helsing had a similar structure and by about half way through I was fed up of it all. Of course it didn't help that it was simply terrible but I think part of it was down to the relentless pacing.

and while I loved Iron Giant, I disliked Incredibles and was only so so with Ratouille...

Here's hoping.

To be honest, I'm not all that sure what to make of any of this.

I had to do some back ground checking, because I had not heard of John Carter before.

For the time of its conception, it was pretty far out stuff. However, a 100 years later, I'm not sure how'll the story will translate. I'm guessing some artistic liberties w/ the original story will be implemented for the big screen.

I predict John Carter will be the biggest bomb in recent history. You don't spend $250 million on a film without having a huge star attached, nor do you alienate the target audience by disavowing all connection to the source material. Heads will roll at Disney for this.

Your post got me wondering if there was any definition/formula for "Bomb" - not exactly, here's wiki's attempt:

The phrase box office bomb (also referred to as a flop) refers to a film for which the overall cost (production, marketing and distribution) greatly [?] exceeds the revenue regained by the movie studio. This should not be confused with Hollywood accounting when official figures show large losses, yet the movie is a financial success [??]. Since the term only refers to studio returns on investment, it should not be confused with a negative critical reception, or even with being unpopular or a poor performer compared with other films. After all, a film with an excessive budget can "bomb" in terms of studio profits, but still outperform the vast majority of other theatrical releases during that year.

Studios pushed into financial ruin from movies that bombed:
In extreme cases, a single film's poor performance can push a studio into bankruptcy or equivalent financial ruin, as happened with RKO (The Conqueror), United Artists (Heaven's Gate), Carolco Pictures (Cutthroat Island, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest box office flop of all time), Fox Animation Studios (Titan A.E.), The Ladd Company (Twice Upon a Time and The Right Stuff), Fleischer Studios (Mr. Bug Goes to Town), and ITC Entertainment (Raise the Titanic). The Golden Compass was seen as a significant factor in influencing Warner Bros.' decision to take direct control of New Line Cinema.
When a failed attempt to revive a genre is particularly costly, all studios baulk at producing similar films, as was the case with Gold Circle Films' horror-comedy Slither, which made less than a quarter of its $29.5 million budget.

[?] When someone defines "greatly" we'll have abetter idea.

By this definition I think your prediction will be correct.

"Princess of Mars" was his first book. I see no reason for all these predictions of doom. The movie looks good and from what I've heard is relatively true to the source material. I mean, it doesn't seem likely to become as popular as any of those three movies, owing to the simple fact that "Princess of Mars" means nothing to most youngsters.

My one confusion stems from the decision to call the movie plain "John Carter." Really, what were they thinking? Isn't "John Carter" an "ER" spin-off? "John Carter of Mars" seems vastly superior, just from a "what the hell are we even talking about" standpoint. Oddly, all the posters have that sigil-like "JCM" somewhere at the bottom, so somebody in charge simply couldn't bring themselves to drop the "of Mars" bit completely. So very odd.

Oh, and MI:4 was a terrible cartoon with live actors doing all the Bugs Bunny nonsense. I hear Tom Cruise's next role will be as the Energizer Bunny. Why did so many folks love it, when the plot was absurd, the action ludicrous, and the technology wouldn't even have cut it on the 3rd Season of Fringe?
