So, for Christmas I got Metropolis on DVD- the 1984 Giorgio Moroder restoration that my Wife & I saw at the movies back then. We just watched it and I have to say we loved it.
I did some research and found that the 'Complete' version that's available is nearly twice as long (some 25-30 minutes due exclusively to inter-titles), and has 25 minutes of 'new' footage gleaned from a cruddy Argentinian 16mm print some German uberfan fled to there with long ago.
My questions are: anyone here see the full version?
Anyone see both & care to contrast them?
Honestly, I've read some of the inter-title content that Moroder saw fit to leave out of his version, and
I really don't see the need for them myself. I feel like some of it simplifies the film- nails down ideas best left to the imagination without them.

Maybe I just can't let go of the cool 80's beat that made the flick come alive for me, eh?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I had seen the film in various versions multiple times long before Moroder got his hands on it. I don't care for that version. I have yet to see the newly restored "complete" film.

My experience echoes gordon's. I thought the film worked well when I saw it as a child and it still does. There are some wonderful shots, later copied in many films (you catch the one in bladerunner where Deckard goes to see Tyrell and he turns down the panaramic shades? That shot is taken from metropolis. I don't remember if it's in the moroder version or not.

Some day when you're feeling more contemplative you should see the longer version. it's essential must see sci fi, like forbidden planet, or planet of the apes.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

I saw the full restoration recently on PBS. The program also explained the discovery of the film in Argentina and what it meant for Metropolis archivists. It's a different and better film than anything I've seen before, even the rocking Moroder version. There are scenes that no one has seen since the film played in Germany in the 20's for only one week. When you see the new scenes as they appear in the film you thought you knew, it really is quite an exciting experience to see them all for the first time. The shrine to Hel is at last witnessed in all it's original glory, something which makes the Moroder model insert look quite silly. There is much more development of many of the supporting characters as well, more street and aerial views of the city, and more developed Yoshiwara scenes.

It's an awesome film, in any incarnation, and now y'all have me wanted to see the new more complete version.

I was just fishing around & found an extended clip from the newer version. Based on this viewing, I gotta say,
The good: I LOVE the 35mm restoration. So clean & no jitters.
The meh: The music score is good, but just good.
The bad: The inter-titles. I'm an exceptionally fast reader, and to ME, it seems like an eternity each time one comes up (and they come up OFTEN).

I have to add to my previous comments that although seeing the full restoration was remarkable, it was also a bit too slow and too long for me to probably watch it again. I also prefer the Moroder version because the music is powerful and well-suited for the film, and it gets you to the finish much quicker.
