Quote:

Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why?

Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down, the lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it?

On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman's life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously - and unbeknownst to her - had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future.

From director Jon Favreau ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2") and the fertile imaginations of J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke ("Supernatural"), comes a surprising "what if" action-adventure series, where an unlikely hero will lead the world out of the dark. Literally.

It looks interesting.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

It looks a lot like TNT's 'Falling Skies,' except no aliens. FWIW, it wasn't half bad for what it is. Season 2 starts this Summer.

The little show that could - I liked it for what it was too - looking forward to it's return.

Since Terra Nova and Alcatraz were canceled, i don't watch sci-fi on tv anymore (except Syfy's Alphas with Summer Glau); i will take a look at this one.

I have seen all the released scenes (they were on Hitfix). I like the pedigree of the creators.
But one thing bothers me. “the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages”. Why?
If all the electricity went out, the world would not be thrust back into the dark ages but rather the late 19th century. Yeah I know they’re using a play on words, and do not mean the actual Dark Ages.
However, the main action takes place 15 years after the lights go out. Without electricity, you would still have steam power. That would mean you could still have locomotives and steamships. You could still have factories. You could still have construction. With 21st century know how, I’m sure that they could create smaller and more efficient steam engines, likely running on gasoline.
Also, they show horses being used again. I’m sure that would happen, but what about bicycles? Two characters appear to be walking to Chicago, from what appears to be the east coast. Without cars, the roadways should still be in decent shape, so biking should be popular.
I’m going to watch, but it’s things like that which will bug me.

I'm looking forward to what kind of technobabble they use to explain that "electricity doesn't work anymore." Animals run on internally generated electricity. I guess there must be a certain amount of electrical activity still working otherwise everyone would be dead. Hey, maybe there's a vampire/zombie angle they're saving, as a surprise.

One should also note that mid-19th century telegraph systems were run using crude batteries. That said, it would have been possible to use all that fiber optic cable to rig a light driven telegraph. And all those dead motor vehicles could be stripped down to the frame and wheels to provide an excellent horse drawn wagon. I wonder if stuff like this will be ignored.

Yup, lets just knock up a design on Autocad, order the fiddly parts off the internet and run up the custom bits on CNC lathes and milling machines... Oh. Wait.

Modern technology is highly dependent on having the machine that makes the machine that makes the part. Break that chain and you are heading back to the dark ages.

Sure, what you suggest is possible, but there is going to be a hiatus while the handful of people with the skills to either hand-craft precision engine components or adapt designs on the spot to use scavenged parts pass on their knowledge and start to build some early 19th century production lines. That, against a backdrop of civilisation going to hell within a day or two because food, water and heating supplies have failed.

If your bike chain broke, or a gear got stripped, would you know how to fix it other than "order new part from EBay and fit it"? (Maybe you could, but you'd be in a minority) Where's your nearest blacksmith, and are they good at anything other than making souvenir horseshoe paperweights? Even if they are, would they have the capacity to keep any significant fraction of the population on two wheels?

The good thing about horses is that they know how to make more horses.

Obviously, though, this show is going to need some SF or Fantasy plot device to explain such a selective change in the laws of physics (see, e.g. Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon The Deep).

OTOH, the premise reminds me somewhat of The Changes which simply had people suddenly and irrationally turn against technology. That had a fantasy explanation (which the BBC completely cocked up in the TV version).
