THESOMNAMBULIST

Hello all.

Thought I'd make mention of this little indie sic-fi flick coming out of the UK that my best friend was cinematographer on.

here's the website:

It'll never compete with the likes of Prometheus or Avengers ( Of course) but it has it's heart in the right place and it's a young crew who worked very hard at putting it together. The film industry here in England is pretty awful so managing to make anything is an achievement in itself.

Anyway keep an eye out for it.

:D

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Mickey!!!!

Looks good. I just watched Attack the Block a couple of nights ago, and these smaller independent films are more interesting to me than most of the blockbusters lately (Avengers being the exception).

Thanks for checking it out EC.

I honestly can't give an objective view any longer - as I've followed it all the way. All I know is I hope it does well and I hope my friend gets some acknowledgment of his skill as a DP. This is my friends second feature - his first was 'F' have you heard of that? Similar vein to Attack The Block.

These guys have to start somewhere and while it's never going to compete with the big guns I still think they're great fun if you're in the mood for them.

Thanks again for checking it out.

I had not heard of "F" and it seems it's not available here in the States, either on disc or streaming through Netflix. I went to amazon.co.uk and found it, but I already wasted money on one Region2 title that my player can't read.

ETA: In checking out F's IMDb page, I noticed the school is Wittering College. Is that a real school, or is it possibly a nod to the 1971 David Hemming's film "Unman, Wittering and Zigo," which had a similar theme?

Looks very interesting and well done. With computer graphics being so sophisticated these days even lower budget films can have decent fx, so if you have a good visualist/story tellers/ and acting, you can have a very successful film.
In general I also I find these kinds of films to be more a purer expression of a director's vision - true auteurs - rather than having it mangled by the demands of a large corp like Marvel/Disney. Really like JW of course, but I thought a lot of Avengers seemed by committee.

Since your friend was a cinematographer I'm curious if you know: was it shot on film or digital? And if on film was it digitized for editing and post? I've lost touch with how films are shot and edited these days but if I had to guess it would be that they all end up as digital at some point.

Yeah I like to thinks so too. I know they worked so hard on it and dealt with so much hardship in getting it made that actually the filming part was a small percentage of the endeavour. So I really hope it gets some attention.

Digital. I can't remember the camera but I've just emailed him asking him specifically what he used. I know he spent quite a while experimenting with various sorts of digital cameras to get the look he was after. He also learnt to roller-skate so that he could track the actors during a chase scene :D

Cheers for the added link also :D

Oh man. That's a shame! I'll have to ask him about US distribution. I thought they had some....

Yep shot at the college the director studied at as a young boy (i think). Not sure about the David Hemmings reference I'll have to ask my friend. Nice observation all the same :D
