...cue the usual mix of excitement and pessimism when a remake is announced.

For the uninitiated, Blake's 7 was a late, lamented 70s British SciFi show created by the same guy who gave us the Daleks and "Survivors".

It had legendary wonky special effects, a legendarily downer ending and a legendary absence of the titular hero for much of its run (which wasn't a problem - the show was stolen by a far more interesting and morally ambiguous supporting character with a brilliant story arc - hopefully any re-write will keep that aspect). On the other hand, it starred half the Royal Shakespeare Company and some of the stories were rather good.

Blake's 7 was the prototypical 'anti-Star Trek' rag-tag crew against the system show, predating Farscape, Lexx, Babylon 5, early Andromeda and some cancelled space Western show who's name escapes me.

Also, if they don't cast Morena Baccarin as scenery-chewing villain Servalan (think Diana in V rather than Inara), they're stupid.

It's being written by the writer of 'Heroes'... I'm desperately reminding myself that season 1 of Heroes was really rather good (now, there is a show that would have been improved by early cancellation).

TRAVELER

A wait and see attitude is my position. The right team and it can work. I am sure most would like to see new adventures and there will be people who never saw the original and this will completely new to them, so they won't be comparing the two. It would be nice if it works. The original was great fun to watch.

Gorram! Morena Baccarin as Servalan? Oh, that works! That would be shiny!

Alec Baldwin as Travis? Hmmm...

Seriously, a Blake's 7 reboot/followup/whatever has been on the cards - and stuck in development hell - for years. In fact, Sky were the first to look at it seriously.

If Syfy can only get the cast and writers right, this might just work. As a B7 fan myself, I can only hope.

Nah, I think he'd be better as Avon (thinking more of his "Chuck" persona than Jayne).

Alan Tudyk as Villa (cowardly comedian) and Summer Glau as Cally (telepathic, kicks butt), of course.

...that's where I run out of inspiration. Can't have Nathan as Blake because he needs to get upstaged by Avon and then disappear for the last half of the run.

In fact, in a 're-imagining' it might be fun to have Blake killed off in about episode 3 (that would mess with people's heads) and exploited as martyr figure by Avon, who has a cynical plan to set up a resistance movement as a front for a crime syndicate (...but gradually gets converted to the true cause).

SERGEANTX

Joss stole more than a little from "Blake's 7" in Firefly. Very specifically, the scene from "Train Job" where a drugged Jayne (after behaving questionably) saves Mal from one of Niska's henchmen with a seemingly well-placed shot to the assailant's weapon hand. Jayne responds to Mal's thanks exactly as Kerr Avon responds to Blake - "I was aiming at his head!"
