Enterprise vs Millenium Falcon: Which is Fastest.
Ranking spaceships by speed

Cool story and graphic
Also includes Serenity.
( Don't tell Kaylee, but she's pretty slow...)

E-T-A: also on Slate's Health & Science page, a piece about what Star Trek got wrong, and got right, 2012 science wise. Fascinating!!!

FILLYGIRL

Operative: "Its worse than you know..." Mal: "It usually is."

Haven't we had this contest before,...I seem to remember some kind of contest between them?

WHOZIT

I'll always go with "Serenity", but I have a soft spot for "Planet Express"

Technically the Millenium Falcon DOES go 1.5 lightyears through hyperspace, but that's if it's on a straight course with no shortcuts. Hyperspace is basically wormholes within and connected to wormholes but with every part of it corresponding to a specific coordinate in the Star Wars galaxy. So by taking shortcuts, even though the Falcon goes only 0.5 past light speed in hyperspace, it can still reach the galactic center from just about anywhere in a matter of a few hours.

Just have to watch out for gravity wells because those pull ships out of hyperspace.

Serenity can only get up to 1/3 light speed with inertial screening, so yeah, it's a slower one. The Tardis then the Planet Express then the Falcon top the list basically.

CYBERSNARK

I just look at travel range:

Serenity, much as we love her, is sublight-only; she's confined to one solar system (unless you wanna spend a few centuries gliding to the next star).

The Enterprise (like all Starfleet ships) can travel around the Alpha Quadrant, covering hundreds of lightyears. The Gamma and Delta quadrants are considered unreachably distant without exceptional help (wormholes, quantum slipstream drives, etc).

The Falcon (like most ships in the Star Wars universe) can travel thousands of lightyears. The Old Republic controlled (either directly or through political/economic influence) almost half the galaxy.

(The winner of this little competition is the Andromeda Ascendant, since ships in the Andromeverse use slipstream, and can easily slip between galaxies in the time it takes to read this post --at its height, the Systems Commonwealth spanned the Milky Way, Triangulum, and Andromeda galaxies.)

Well, any ship that is also a time machine can have you sipping a nice hot cup of tea at the Alpha Centauri service station before your competitors have even been born. The TARDIS can do this by design, but the Enterprise can always slingshot around a convenient gravity well and Planet Express Ship has that thing with the microwave oven...

Actually, I think any FTL ship can implicitly travel in time...

The article stuffed up with (Nu)Galactica and their "5 minute turn-around" - they just need to look up the title of the first episode after the miniseries! OK, that's the time it took the Cylons to find them after each jump, but getting turned around within 33 minutes was running them ragged.

The Heart of Gold from Douglas Adams' Hitchiker's Guide is also high up on the list. Its Infinite Improbability Drive takes it simultaneously through ALL points in the Galaxy. Problem is, you can never predict which point is the one you'll materialize at. So it's REALLY FAST, but NOT accurate at all. Precision improves if you get the Bistromath add-on, which they got from the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, but since it's based on the mathematics of waiters adding up customer checks, REALITY does not. I think that's how it worked...
