This looks both funny and a bit terrifying:

More "let's put kids in jeopardy" trope - meh on that one. The scary house is frankly, a joke (maybe it's meant to be?). But that damn clown is scary as hell.

I can't do horror. I liked The Haunting and Stir of Echoes and Sixth Sense which are more suspense I guess. Horror is just too... primitive for me to even get into any of it...

I don't get it either other than being a film fan I feel obliged to acknowledge it. There are some very creative and dedicated people making those films so I gotta rec-o-nize. The Walking Dead just came back to life and has actually been really good over the last season and a half.

The first "IT" was filmed in my city so I watched it just to see what they did. It was creepy enough as it was.

Do you each feel that the explosion of torture-porn style horror has diluted the strength of the genre?

Have either of you seen The Entity with Barbara Hershey?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082334/

Did Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or other films derived from Ed Gein also not rise to your level?

Shaun of the Dead?

The problem with Serial Killers:
They are True and Abundant. Very Scary!

Ed Gein   & a buncha other guys:
Ted Bundy,
David Berkowitz
Kenneth Bianchi & Angelo Buono Jr.: The Hillside Stranglers
Jeffrey Dahmer, Zodiac Killer.
Albert Fish
John Wayne Gacy
Edmund Kemper
Henry Lee Lucas
Charles Manson
Dennis Rader
Richard Ramirez
Gary Ridgway
Arthur Shawcross
Robert Lee Yates
Jack the Ripper ... possibly the original?

Lotsa women serial killers, too; but they tend not
to be as famous as the men, so I never noticed them.

I remember Caryl Chessman, too.
Partly because he was local, but mainly, it
took the state of CA years to execute him.
He wasn't a serial killer that I know of.

The term Serial Killer was not created until the 70s. Manson and Gein predate that milestone. Although other Serial Killers predate Gein, can you name one other than The Ripper?
Last I heard, which was decades ago, there are an estimated 5 active Serial Killers loose in each State in America.

B4 Jack the Ripper ...

During the 15th century, French knight Gilles de Rais allegedly killed &
raped many young boys. He was said to have sat on their dead bodies
for a while before incinerating the evidence in his bedroom fireplace.
Some speculate that he could have been framed for political reasons,
but he was executed in 1440 anyway.

Vlad the Impaler, 1431-1477
In his reign, 1456-62 ... he's said to have killed thousands.
... Not sure Vlad counts if he didn't get his own hands bloody.

I'll do a better search later. Pretty sure there were some between
1860 & 1960. Can't count Jesse James. How about Billy the Kid?

I meant off the top of your head. You proved the point already - that few people can. But almost everybody knows Freddy Krueger, Michael Myer, Jason Voorhees, Norman Bates, Hannibal Lector, and the Texas Chainsaw gang.

I never heard of Otis Tuttle. Can you bring us up to date?

Those are serial killers ala Hollywood. They don't count.

Yes, I've seen Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs

Michael Myers/Tony Moran attacks Laurie/Jamie Lee Curtis, Halloween 1978
I don't remember if I saw that.

I know of way more real-life serial killers than Hollywood ones.

from Wikipedia

"America's Most Wanted was an American television program on Fox
(1988-2012). Produced by John Walsh who also narrated it the 1st 2 years.
Actors portrayed dangerous relife fugitives. As of March 2013, over 1,200
criminals have been captured."
(I may have watched a few of these shows; I don't remember now.)

"Walsh's six-year-old son, Adam Walsh, was kidnapped and murdered in 1981."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Adam_Walsh

"Convicted serial killer Ottis Toole confessed to Adam's murder, but was
never convicted for this specific crime due to loss of evidence & a recanted
confession. Toole died in prison of liver failure on September 15, 1996."

This is a horror story that I am loathe to repeat. But it's not uncommon,
as we know. The picture of Adam Walsh in Wikipedia looks much like some-
one I know.

Ottis Toole ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottis_Toole
One look at Toole on this page, you know he ain't the full quid.

OK, I got it. Real Killers.

Toole was friend/accomplice of Henry Lee Lucas. They can be seen portrayed onscreen in something like Portrait of a Serial Killer, with Micheal Rooker. Forewarning for those who are affected: there be decapitation.

I'm a little surprised you didn't mention Joel Rifkin. He is of importance regarding pursuit and capture of Serial Killers, and other criminals.

JSF: "I'm a little surprised you didn't mention Joel Rifkin."

Rifkin was active, perhaps, after I'd found a different, obsessive hobby.
My 1st computer & computer games, no doubt.

Joel David Rifkin is an American serial killer. In 1994, he was sentenced
to 203 years in prison for the murders of nine women between 1989 and 1993.
[& those were just the ones they found.]
From what I read of him, doesn't sound like he was even very careful. {?}

3 from a list of 10 Most Prolific Serial Killers In History
(None on the list were in the USA.)

1 Harold Shipman United Kingdom 215
2 Luis Garavito Colombia 138
3 Pedro López Colombia Ecuador Peru 110

One list claims the USA has multiples more SKs than any other country.
I'm deciding these lists are mostly BS.
