SUCCATASH

So, I gave in to Lucas and bought the new Star Wars DVD collection. I happened to notice a few things.

Luke's lightsaber changes colors. When Ben gives him "his father's lightsaber" at the beginning of A New Hope, it's blueish white.

But later, when Luke is training on the Millenium Falcon, it's green.

When Obi-Wan is fighting Darth Vader, his saber is a deep blue. Where did the green saber come from?

Also, in Return of the Jedi, there is a wardrobe malfunction. During the Jabba the Hut scene - Jabba starts to pull his green dancer towards him and her boob pops out.

It was fun to watch the movies again, but Damn! Lucas sure made a lot of changes. I'm with those folks who want the originals back.

I'm pretty disappointed in the Hayden C. scene at the end of ROJ. Luke had never seen young Anakin's face before, and he shows no interest in seeing his father as a young man for the first time.

The new emporer does a good job. Most of Lucas's changes I didn't have a problem with. But there's absolutely no excuse for the Greedo scene. It still sucks.

All in all - wide screen format, big tv, surround sound - it was a fun ride and worth the $40, in my opinion.

Maybe the Green Saber is just a training saber?
Also, I like boobs and believe they should be supported, in general.
As for the changes in SW trilogy, some added scenery changes and explosion effects are fine, anything beyond wasn't.

The lightsaber thing is odd, but wasn't Oola's nipple-slip there originally?

Or have people been referring to some other scene all these years?

Actually, I assumed both scenes were there originally. I had just never noticed them before.

Are you saying the green saber is new? Or has Luke's saber always switched colors? I'm surprised Lucas didn't fix that.

I'd say the different lightsaber's are a case of different FX people not talking to each other.

My other beef about version 3.0 is, while the black space is better that the dark brown of old - why couldn't they fix it on the tie-fighters? There are these brown squares attacking the millenium falcon! Irritating.

The improvements on Senior the Hutt are nice-ish but not really that great.

I'm glad to see the back of one-eyed-betty from Empire though. That googley eye was just stupid looking.

And Hayden at the end..... I don't know what to think right now - if Revenge of the Sith is good than I'll like it. If Revenge of the Sith is shit then I won't.

I thought I noticed the boob slip but I didn't feel compelled to pan and scan.

Heard that scene whilst walking through a shop and instantly hated it.

For those who haven't seen the new edition, let me paraphrase.

"Vader?"
"Yes boss?"
"That Luke lad, looks a lot like Anakin Skywalker doesn't he?"
"Nah..."
"Search your feelings Lord Vader, you know it to be true" (okay, that last bit is a sickening quote)

Almost as sledgehammer subtle as the two sweeps and a close up of the Death Star plan in AOTC.

Why does it have to be subtle?

I haven't seen the DVDs yet, but I pulled out my VHS copies of the original trilogy and watched EP 4 tonight. The light-sabre Luke uses in Obi-Wan's hut and the Falcon training scene is a pale washed-out blue, similar to 'Tash's first screen cap. The green light-sabre therefore must be an intentional screw-up, so that George Lucas has something ELSE to fix when the full 9-episode saga is released on Movie-Chips in 2023.

Please elaborate. I stopped paying attention to SW ages ago, after Lucas started to 'retouch' his orignals. Did Hayden C. get superimposed over the 'old' Anakin in the final scene of Return of the Jedi ? I thought I heard folks joking about that, but never really thought much of it,whether it was actually true. If so, I'm REAL disappointed.

Nice rack on the slave dancer though.

Yes Hayden is now standing next to Obi-Wan and Yoda as a force ghost at the end of ROTJ. Lucas expanation for this is that Anakin's self image was frozen at the time he turned to the dark side. Hence he would appear as his younger self even after death. Don't totally agree with this since Anakin came back to the light before he died.

At first I almost fell for this explanation by Lucas, as it seemed to make some sense. But the fact that Luke saved Anakin, right before his death seems to trump that point. Obi Wan was an old Jedi when he died, and so was Anakin.

New emperor? It was Ian McDiarmid that has played the role since the beginning. As for the Hayden C. part at the end, that really shocked me when I first saw it. My husband who is a HUGE fan says that the reason that Lucas might have changed it is that because it shows Anakin before he turned to the dark side. Some people though were very unhappy with that.

Actually Ian was not the emperor back in the original release but no one will ever see that again. The guy who played him back 1980(ESB) was named Clive Revell(sp?). Ian came on board beginning with ROTJ in 1983.

STEGASAURUS

What I find funny, as I look back at the "original" Star Wars (now called "A New Hope") is that the outfit that Luke is wearing as a Moisture Farmer on an Ass-End-of-the-Galaxy planet is the same outfit that the Jedi Knights of old wore. Only thing glaringly missing is the "shoulder armor" which was nothing more than a few straps of cloth (in Annikin's case Pleather) that came from the back, over the shoulders and tucked under the belt.

Also, in the case of saber colors )not to sound too nerdy, I just like the games) Green = Counsular (probably spelled it wrong) and Blue = Guradian. I cannot remember what Yellow meant, but Purple was purely Master Windu's color so that you could distinguish his character at all times in the movie, and well, Red is self explanitory.

The lightsabers colours are the cause of some debate.

They come from the crystal inside the lightsaber, but Lucas always used blue and green for light and red for dark side. Some people have said that the colours represent different jeid classes in the expanded universe and in games (though sometimes the names of these clases are different)

Someone once suggested that the different colours represented Luke's coming of age from a an apprentice to a jedi, from a boy to man and that the lightsaber was a purely phalic symbol (this was based on the fact that the green lightsaber is also slightly longer). I dont think there is any truth to this though but its kinda funny.

With Mace's purple lightsaber, it wasnt intended to be a different colour, but basically Samuel L Jackson really wanted a purple one. And I mean, as if anyones going to argue with him, he might start quoting Ezekiel 25:17 and blow you away.

In expanded universe books and games (like KOTOR) different crystals in your lightsaber can make different colours.

Sorry I love talking SW

I have to say though, I really hate the change to the greedo/han scene

One of the Jedi posters actully had Vader holding a blue lightsaber (even though Lukes was green by this point) and Luke was holding a red.

Evan made a sculpter of that poster, wonder what someone was taking day they designed that

The Emperor was played by a woman who had a chimpanzee's eyes super-imposed over her own and voiced by Clive Revell in the original ESB (Thankfully my copy is part of the unmodified rerelease of the Trilogy shortly before the Special Editions came about)

This was changed and the scene rewritten for the DVD release. In his quest to cheesify Star Wars, Lucas will stop at nothing.

Thank God we have shows like Galactica and Firefly that have managed to keep sci-fi somewhat respectable.
