Has anyone else noticed the odd pattern to the rain on this show? Whenever it starts to rain, it's an immediate downpour, like someone suddenly turned on a switch. Similarly, when the rain stops, there's no slow reduction in intensity, just a sudden cessation - again as if someone flipped a switch. It seems that the environment that the castaways are in may be artificial!

Exactly! Like when the father told his son that he would go look for the dog when it stopped raining, and right after he said that, the rain stopped!

I think that's the answer to what the monster is in the first place:

Select to view spoiler:

The rain stopped as soon as the father said he'd look for the dog if the rain stopped. The boy was looking at a comic book in the second half of the pilot, and on one of the pages there was a polar bear. Then, lo and behold, one pops out of the woods. The environment complied with the boy's thoughts.

I think the thing in the woods is the dark side of humanity. Like that game Terry O'Quinn was playing. There's a light side and a dark side to everyone and everything.

I'm sure a lot of what you see in Lost isn't real, but as odd as this may sound, that happens a lot here in Hawaii. It's because the rainclouds are very localized and they move along very quickly.

Echoing what Haken said here. Storms on tropical islands and rain forests tend to be very intense and then stop quickly. Also both get an insane amount of rain, as in it generally rains for a bit each day though not always quite as hard.

It's not the suddenness of the rain, it's the TIMING that has me interested. I've seen that sort of rain in the caribbean, but it never stopped when I needed it to!

To me it sounded like Haken was saying that due to quick-moving localized rainclouds you will often see things in your environment (Hawaii) that aren't really there.

Yes, the timing is also suspicious. One of the things that made me notice the sudden stopage was that, in one instance, the rain immediately stopped right after that guy (sorry, don't know everyone's name yet) told his son he'd look for the dog when the rain stopped - THEN THE RAIN STOPPED. There's no way that could be a coincidence.

I have not seen anyone comment on the last ep of Lost. It was written by David Fury, the great former buffy and angel writer. This show has not disappointed me yet. Each ep answers a few questions but raises several more. Great tv.

Yep, I agree. The mystery just keeps getting deeper. This last episode it was the guy in the three-piece suit in the distance. Also, how can Locke suddenly walk after the accident? I was thinking that this whole thing might be some insidious government experiment, but even they couldn't pull that one off.

I have a feeling this show is aimed more toward older viewers. The next two episodes are titled "White Rabbit" and "House of the Rising Sun". Just seeing those titles is enough to take me back to the those days in the mid-60's... Wow, it's deja vu all over again.

Or, as Angelus said, "Been there, done that. Deja vu just isn't what it used to be..."

My soon-to-be-ex said something last night that I think is on the right track. He said, "I think they're in purgatory or something. That everyone on the plane who died is on this island." And then I said, "Oooh! That FITS!" And then he said, "But what about all the people from the rear section of the plane?" And I said, "They must have LIVED."

It just reminded me of that western a couple years ago, was it called "Purgatory?" or the town was called that. Or something.

Im sitting here on a tropical island right now and i can tell you that it rains almost every day. Some days its rains as hard as it can for fifteen minutes, then stop and other days it can rain for up to three days nonstop. Its like nothing i have experienced in the states. So from experience it sounds just about right. But ive been stuck here for several months so i havent had the oppurtunity to see Lost. Is it really as good as they say?

I have watched Lost since the first episode, and though I'm still not sure what is going on I did have a theory. And just in case...

Select to view spoiler:

.Though I like some of the thoughts others have posted my first thought was that the island was somehow generating the hopes and fears of the lost passengers. Sorry but I'm bad with names and the shows still new, the Backgammon guy obviously didn't have much fear, but had a lot of hope as shown in the flashback of him wanting to go on walkabout. and he said something to Jack about having looked into the eye of the island and it being full of hope, this after those who were scared saw the "monster" heading his way. The first appearence of the monster was when everyone was scared, they had just crashed, had no idea where they were, etc. Lots of fear = big monster. In the cockpit scene, the pilot (wasn't that Weiss from Alias) just regained consciousness, same reaction, just crashed = fear = monster. Jack, obsessed with father, sees father. Rock band guy, hopeful of finding guitar...., and of course the small group seeking to place transmitters or whatever to boost their distress call, are afraid that noone will ever hear it, so a call that has never been heard....
or, I'm just off my nut I don't know, but I am hooked. Great show...

I love the golf course. Hurley rocks.

What about Ethan, is he a psycho-wanna-be or what? He wasn't on the airplane/manifest. Didn't any of the other passengers notice that he wasn't one of the survivors of their crash?? Do you think he is the "Alex" that the french lady was interrogating Said (sp?) about?

Dude, ethan scares the shit outta me. I started screaming last wensday, like seriously screaming, "Oh my god! He's not on the plane! Dude! HE WASN'T ON THE FUCKING PLANE!"

and then i got yelled at for saying fuck.

Anyway, I think that the French Chick really did kill whoever she was with, and this ethan dude is totaly unrelated. To quote Ann Heche in Six Days, Seven Nights, "This is not a good island for airplanes."

And yeah, I think that ethan could blend right in with everbody. People wouldn't think too much about a strange face because everybody (except those that were sitting around them) would be a strange face to everybody else. People obviously wern't sitting around on the island trying to figure out who everybody else was, this was the first ep where it even occured to anybody to do that. They also don't really have any reason to assume that there would be people who wern't in the plane crash on the island.

My question is, WTF does Ethan want w/ a pregnant chick and a guitar player? (or anybody for that matter) why is he evil? Where is he taking them? Is he gonna grind their bones to make his bread or what?

and the BIG question is: How many other people are on the island?

Ebo,

I think Ethan wants the baby and is just going to kill Clare and Charlie. It was so eerie when he met them on the trail! You could just SEE "I'm a lunatic" written all over his face.

And I thought it was really nice of dickhead (I forgot his name!) to give Hurley the manifest without being a jerk about it. And if Jack doesn't do something, Kate is going to hookup with him (the dickhead).

I've got to say I'm hooked on this show. It has become the only thing my wife & I watch besides Scrubs. & of course we're waiting for SG-1 to make it's way back to the airwaves. Sad to say I didn't start watching it till after a few episodes. We we're loyal Smallville fans. Then Smallville just started getting "weird" So I found episodes of LOST for download. Started at the beginning & caught up. From the first episode I have been rabid in my love of this show. I talk about it like I did Firefly. I'd hook up on their board except I like the layout of FFF.net. And It's like family over here. When I head David Fury was writing for LOST I knew it would be awesome. Just last night wife & I we're leaving Walmart & saw the newest Entertainment magazine. Jack & Kate on the front. You bet I bought it. I love all the theories as to what's taking place, but then there is this side of me that just wants to be as clueless as the "castaways" I guess that's what we're calling them. I want to figure it out with them. Oh, I came up with a great LOST drinking game & I don't even drink. Take a shot each time Hurley says "Dude".

For those of you who haven't see the show. DO NOT TRY TO JUMP IN THE MIDDLE. There is so much you will miss. If possible get episode copies from a friend or find them online via a torrent site. I found the first 8 episodes for straight download in ok quality here. http://www.tvshows.nu/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=415

You may need a few codec's depending on what system you've got. But they are worth watching. This is some of the best television & story telling you'll ever see. Who knows I may have to break down & make some LOST inspired shirts at my Zazzle shop.

I love the show, too. Can't wait for the dvds to come out, but that's probably over a year away.

Another show I've found I like, even though I'm a semi-elderly guy, is Gilmore Girls. On last week's episode they even had a reference to "Spike and Drusilla". I laughed my head off at that one. But that show is often very funny. You have to really pay attention though because the dialogue moves along so quickly that you can easily miss things. The person I was watching with completely missed the "Spike and Drusilla" line. I had to repeat it back to her during the next commercial - she had been wondering why I was laughing so hard.

So my shows this year are a lot like yours - Scrubs and Lost, but I also watch Gilmore Girls and Joan of Arcadia - even though it's not quite as good as it was last year.

A Lost drinking game. I'm no drinker myself, but it sounds like something fun to dream up. How about some more rules:

1) Everytime Sawyer calls Kate "Freckles"

2) Every scene that has Locke holding a knife.

3) Two drinks for any scene where Locke is holding a knife and something he killed is in the scene with him.

4) Everytime there is a confrontation between Sayid and Sawyer, everyone yells "You kids play nice!" and has a drink. Last one to finish the line takes 2 drinks.

What else?

I'm no expert in these matters, but... I don't think staying sober is the point of a drinking game.

Of greater concern is "Will anyone be concious by the end of an episode." If the room is wiped out, then no one will be able to follow the story from one week to the next.

Charlie DIDN'T die!! I think he's great on the show, but that was such a powerful scene, and it would have been a stunning end to the episode. It also would have shown that the show has real courage, and is not afraid to kill a beloved character if it makes the show better. You know, like a Joss show. It also would have made the situation more tense for everyone else on the island, with the viewers not knowing if everything will turn out fine at the end of each episode. At first it did seem like a cop out but remember the scene they were showing around this sequence. The boy was roling the dice and getting the exact numbers he needed because we completely believed he would get them. It also relates to what Locke said earlier. If you want it bad enough and without doubt the Island will give it to you. I don't think there is any doubt that Jack was completely determined with all his will. It adds another dimension to the power of the island.

I should spoiler this, but hopefully you've seen the fricking episode-

They really had me going when Kate got him to stop. Then Jack started back up and I thought that we're going to have a corpse with his chest caved in...

I'm scared to death that they really didn't get him back. That would be a 'worst possible thing to do to these characters' thing, if you get my reference.

Very pleased that they're rerunning the first two hours nest week, now i'll have a complete set of tapes! Messed up the first two-hour recast when I first saw it with freinds (this was late September, early October, around PA Shindig-time). Now it's a must-see thing in my house. My dad was looking forward to last night, he said "This is going to be good!" He was right 8-)

I'd like to see somebody (Kate?) hit Jack upside the head with a clue-by-four- "You're the only doctor of the island, Jack, you don't have the right to go running off and risking life and limb." (If Kate could say this just the right way, follow up with the right words, and arrange for some privacy, we could get an x-rated episode out of that ;-)

The guy with the kid was complaining about being treated as a second-class citizen. Argh! Locke almost got him killed once, likes the kid well enough that he doesn't want him to lose his dad, and, jeez, looked to me like he was left in charge (He was in construction, did that sketch of the showers they could build, 'minds me of Xander, a little). If anything, the island is top-heavy with heroes and leaders, needs a few indians, like Hurley or Charlie.

BTW- Hurley rocks! Speaking as a fat-guy, I'm happy with the way LOST is portraying 'my people' 8-)

Bad as Sawyer is, his nicknames for folks are okay, better than okay. The meanest one was calling the blond princess-type 'sticks'. Refering to Hurley as 'Stay-puffed' was hi-lariuous!

Vince, ready to get lost with 'Freckles' (wanna?)

OK, it was just a matter of time. I went ahead & designed a "LOST" shirt. I'm not sure about posting a pic of it here since this is a "Firefly" site. I don't want to get ousted or flamed. But I will post a link for it in this thread. It's a fun design and took some work. No copywritten info or logo's. Be sure to read the description of how to get the custom shirt with your name instead of mine.

Oh yeah the link....

EBONEZER

Man, this show is awsome, but it is kinda starting to piss me off with how damn SLOW the story is moving. Which i understand, i suppose, they have to drag out the mystery for a few seasons, all the same, instead of moving the story along linearly (like they have been) show us some group dynamics or something. They have themselves a great opportunity to do the OMG! I'm stuck on an island! How do i react to everything? And sometimes i feel like they're not using their time wisely enough to tell a great story (I mean honestly, we didn't need half an hour of them thrashing through the jungle to get the point that they'd been out there for a long, long time.)

Only complaint. Still gonna watch (and love) the show, and I'm eager to see the one episode i missed.

Ok, no I don't get the reference, but the first part of this had me thinking for a while today and I came up with one of those wild theories that kinda makes some sense but it's really strange. Is it pretentious if I spoiler this just in case I'm half right?

.This may be what you were implying, not sure since I didn't get the reference..anyway, Maybe someone else inhabited Charlie's body, the island maybe contains souls, that can fill bodies of the dead to continue their lives. or some such. This might be a reason for the interest in the baby, kill the baby, let someone else inhabit the body, it would be like engineering reincarnation. Maybe also have something to do with the bodies with the black stone and white stone on them, maybe a ritual to prevent them from returning, which Jack of course negated when he picked up the stones. Maybe some of the Survivors, didn't survive, they just got possessed or whatever. Ok Crazy time over...

Ok I play too many games.

I love this show. My buddy captured the pilot on his computer and did a little virtualdub action to slow it down and enhance it. The resulting clips show, in my opinion, unequivocal evidence supporting the theory of aircrafts. This theory is long and tenuous, yet intriguing. Suffice it to say, there are aircraft flying around during the first five minutes of the pilot episode. One definite occurance is when a man gets sucked into the engine and it explodes. An aircraft swoops down in a very fast U-type maneuver, passing by the exploding engine exactly when it explodes. Possibly the cause of the explosion, not neccessarily the man getting sucked in. (which I loved...reminded me of Crow in Firefly.) The second instance occurs (on my copy) around 3:36 into the pilot episode. Exactly ten seconds after we first see the Korean man shouting for his wife, Jack looks into the air and an aircraft flies from the top of the screen down on the lefthand side.

Inara: Who's winning?
Simon: I can't really tell, they don't seem to be playing by any civilized rules that I know.

I replayed the first 5 mins on my DVD, and yes I do see what you are saying.
But do you think this is a part of the show? Or just a part of the filming of the show?

I like your theory. It's quite easy to get obsessed by this show, isn't it? Not that I'm not still a Browncoat! 8-) Maybe Stillshiny can do a Boar and Bananas Browncoat T-Shirt?

The reference is to Lois McMaster Bujold, who admits that she writes about the worst possible thing that she can think to do to her heroes and heroines, sorta like Joss.

The still from the beginning of LOST I'll take you guys' word on, I don't have the technology...
