Showtime lays 'Dead Like Me' to rest

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Life is over for the series "Dead Like Me," which Showtime has canceled after two seasons, according to sources.

The afterlife drama, starring Mandy Patinkin and Ellen Muth, premiered last year on the premium cable channel to relatively strong ratings and some critical acclaim. But the second season this year failed to sustain the buzz.

The end of "Dead" could be a signal that Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt wants to clear some room on the schedule for more than one of the new pilots he is considering for series treatment. Among the contenders are terrorist drama "The Cell" and the cop drama "Hate."

A decision is expected next month.

DEAD LIKE ME is perhaps one of the best shows on TV, if the suits over at Showtime give that show the ax they will have shown themselves to be just as big of dickheads as the idiots that cancelled Firefly.

I really feel like crying now, I'm being serious. That show had a new feeling to it no other show had. They better expect a fight, but this better not end up like Firefly, since I don't want to have to post how much I miss Dead like me on Deadlikemefans.net

I signed the pettion, though I doubt the Execs at Showtime will change their minds. If it is cancelled, I'm dropping Showtime from my Dish service.

Another great show bites the dust.

I'll never understand how lame assed reality shows like "The Real Gilligan's Island", "Nanny 911", and "Donald Trump's Bad Hair Day Show" can thrive, while shows like "Firefly", "Wonderfalls", and "Dead Like Me" end up cancelled!

I will admit to two guilty pleasure reality shows I do watch, "Extreme Makeover, Home Addition" (it's amazing what Ty and Company can do in one week) and "Overhaulin'" (Chip Foose is a design genius), but the rest are crap!

I also heard that Tru Calling is getting canceled. Not a favorite, but better than whatever reality show will end up in it's time slot.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

I read about this yesterday on another site, and I have to say I am absolutely heartbroken.

A friend of mine (who I also share a love of Wonderfalls with, made by Bryan Fuller, the guy who made Dead) turned me on to Dead Like Me, and I rented the first season.

As usual, the well-scripted, intelligent, cleverly off-beat series gets the axe. Dead always made me laugh and cry in every episode. And Mandy Patinkin was amazing in that role.

I haven't seen the second season yet, since I'll have to wait until it's on DVD.

What is it with suits and hating genre shows? It's getting to the point that there will be absolutely nothing to watch unless it has a millionaire, a survivor, an amazing racer, or someone who will eat yesterday's garbage on it.

It's a sad couple of years for scripted television. I hope reality crashes and burns sooner rather than later, and that execs wake up to the fact that there are millions of people who want stuff like Dead to remain on TV.

I've only seen the first 4 episodes, but I enjoyed them a lot.

Without spoilers, can someone tell me: Is there some kind of story/character resolution at the end of S2? It doesn't end on a cliffhanger, does it?

There are of course loose ends that they didn't have time to get to, but it ends in a good place. Better than most I suspect.

I just signed the petition.

But, what a load of crap to wake up too! I loved this show. Sure they made changes in the second season that I didn't like. But the show was still true to the original concept and kept its core values.

What's wrong with people now adays! It seems as though if a show has words in it more that two syllables, it gets cancelled!

the lowest common denominator. I want smart TV!!! Not drooling, mindless crap!!!

Now showtime has cancelled 2 great shows--first Odyssey 5 and now dead like me.As George(Ellen Muth) would say----"aw fuck."

Hmm, according to SciFi Channel's SciFi Wire:

Quote:

Despite reports of its demise, Showtime's supernatural series Dead LIke Me may still have a little life left in it, according to a report by TV Guide Online's Michael Ausiello. MGM's television president, Hank Cohen, told Ausiello: "We are exploring every opportunity and option that we have available to us. It's a terrific show, and, contrary to what [Showtime president Robert Greenblatt] told Variety [on Dec. 21], our producers don't feel like we've even begun to explore all of the Reaper opportunities that we have."

Cohen added, "We have a very, very loyal fan base, and I'm going to do everything I can for these fans to make sure the show lives on. The irony of all this is that Dead Like Me is a metaphor for second chances, and we're hopefully going to find one."

Cohen told TV Guide that a final decision will be made within 45 days.

The Hollywood Reporter, citing anonymous sources, earlier reported that the show was being canceled after two seasons.

Perhaps there's still hope!

I feel for you JennyPirate - I too am a big Firefly fan - it's a good job that there is DVD's so we can watch them time and again and not need a TV schedule

but everyone can help by sending postal mail to the bosses - to get the addresses just pop to www.deadlikemeonline.com. all you need to do is send a purple post-it with save Dead like me on it - so that won't take too much of your time

I really appreciate all your help as do all of the other veiwers too :)

I'm starting to get used to the idea that I like shows which are out of the mainstream and therefore, are going to get the scythe after a short run. I just hope that people continue to make them so that I have something to watch sometimes.
