I downloaded a great fan-made movie with a Star Wars theme and Oh, my God, it is absolutely amazingly well-done. Especially with the lightsaber duels.

My hat's off to Derek Lake and his friends who put this thing together.

Right on. I just finished watching it and I've got to agree with you about the lightsaber duels. They were really impressive. And on top of that, the storyline ACTUALLY was interesting.

Thumbs up!

wow, I just finished watching this, and it is WAY beyond a fan video...
this is really something special.

Actually if the latest Star Wars movies had a fraction of the human emotion and character development of 'To Know a Jedi' they would be much better films.

thanks again for the link!

I also am having difficulties downloading this!

I got the trailer no worries and it looks great, but having no luck downloading the full movie. Is there anywhere else to download this movie from?

Is bittorrent completely dead now? All the torrent sites had vanished but I was still able to get them from lokitorrent, it seems to have fallen to MPAA as well..

I downloaded the movie about a week ago and really liked it. Hell, after seeing that I think maybe I could build a lightsaber and start using the Force.

Hey, sorry for digging up an old thread, but it's relatively short.

I was wondering whether anybody still has a copy of To Know a Jedi? Several months ago, their site was being finicky and I could only download about a third of the movie, and I checked it yesterday, and to my dismay, all you get is an error screen. The torrent networks don't seem to have it either.

I did some searching, and found that writer/producer Derek Lake was killed in a biking accident not long ago.

He was very talented, wasn't given the time to rise to his fullest extent. 23 is still far too young.

I gotta bump this. I just watched it, and i'm really quite impressed. If nothing else, it is an amazing achievement as far as fan projects go. Plus, as it was inspired by episode 2 not 3, I would say it is better than what inspired it. At least in this, the a-bit-less-than-superb acting is easily excusable because, well.... um.... they arent actors! In star wars, well, 2 or 3 for that matter, it really isnt.

And the special effects are absolutely incredible, if I didnt know better I would say they kidnapped the fx guy who does star wars. While not a real movie, To Know A Jedi has no comparison when it comes to fan vids.

If someone did something like this for firefly, i'd be either really impressed or really scared.

hey folks,

my name is andrew edwards, and i had the great fortune to work as the composer on "TKAJ" and Derek's other films. he was always so touched at the outpouring of love, respect and whatever else he got from everyone who saw "TKAJ".

in an effort to get it distributed better, since it's free to exchange/download/etc., i have a DVD copy of the flick that I'd be willing to upload and mount on someone's server. the current servers are slow at best, and I think it would behoove us to honour his memory with a speedier download.

knowing derek, i know he would have appreciate it as well.

I was greatly impressed by this movie as well. But, instead of just putting up an iso or the [ VIDEO, AUDIO ]_TS folder(s), why not setup a torrent? It'd lessen the load on the server greatly.

the discovery of the joetainment site happened almost simultaneously here and on TheForce.net.

i suggest we spread the word about that site's existence to all interested parties (it's a remarkably swift download for such a large file).

thanks to all who responded.
keep the faith.

Interstingly enough, when I saw DTUCK's and MILFORD's posts, I went looking for the movie myself. It was on TheForce.Net that I found a bunch of dead links (including the one that actually led me to the one I posted). I figured that if I dug around enough I'd find it. I hadn't even heard of it up until this thread.

That being said, I really really enjoyed the film. Having been breast-fed at the Lucas ti...(well, you get the idea) my whole life, it was something I was able to get into.

I won't comment on the acting or anything like that. It was a heartfelt work of art, and it's obvious that everyone involved in the project did their best. I was impressed and amazed by the job well done by everyone.

I recommend this film to any StarWars fan (as long as swearing isn't offensive to you).

everyone over at the forcenet has always wanted to host it there, but because of the almost constant pervasive swearing they couldn't.

as i told someone yesterday, despite all of that, the film is really strong and is clearly the work of someone who knew exactly what they were doing. he was 19 when he made it, the summer between his freshman and sophomore years at film school, on 1 camera for less than $800. i did the score pro bono, because he was just so excited about the project, i couldn't resist (see re: George Lucas' ti...).

thanks for watching.

Sure wish I could see this video, but every time I try to download it, all I get is sound, no video. Anyone know another link I try it from?

Excellent news!

As of today, and courtesy of an excellent young man from California, To Know A Jedi is up on YouTube in it's entirity.

Please let everyone know about this.
It's a decent compression for its size and completely watchable.

It is still at joetainment as well for those who want a larger file.

Finally got to watch this last night and I must say it is very good. Okay, I could have done with a LOT less profanity, but aside from that it was a great fan film.

You speak of Derek in the past tense.. Has something happened to him?

I too was very impressed with TKAJ(way back when) and was surprised that Derek actually responded to my e-mails commending his work.

Derek died in a tragic biking accident one year ago next week.

(That URL is horribly misleading. Derek died on the way to work, not while making horror film!)

I have a QuickTime version of the film on my server, if people are having trouble with the divX one.
