It was the darkest season so far.
Buffy clawing her way out of a grave, shaging Spike, being depressed, Tara dying, Willow skinning Warren, etc.
But it pushed my buttons, and was mostly well done.
The magic/crack metaphore was hammered a little, but it still made it's point.
And of course, OMWF was an absolute joy.
Overall, better than season 1, but not quite as good as season 5. (*thinks* Well, maybe equal...)
The final ep was great, with Xander being the one to save us all...
Still better than most other crap on TV (except FF and Dark Angel).

Briefly, Chrisisall

What can I say; I'm Reaver-like about my shows.
I'm four eps into seven now. Spike is facinating me, might have to pick up Angel S5 to follow up on him...
Seeing Spike sink so low as to try to rape Buffy was harsh, but it made his fighting for his soul quite well motivated and believable IMHO.

And to think, a while back I was stopping with Buffy's fourth season!?!?

Spike not bugs Chrisisall

That was a bit of a cheat if you ask me. Spike clearly has no intention of winning back his soul as he rides out of Sunnydale. The writers deliberately word his lines ambiguously, but it's all in his delivery - he clearly wants to come back evil. I thought they were going to deal with this in S7, but Spike just goes ahead and claims he fought for his soul. Lame.

And Simon personally assisted in River's escape. Uh-huh.
As long as it's well done, I'm willing to overlook inconsistancies. And I think, so far, 6 and what I've seen of 7 are good. Definitly not the tight perfection of 2 and 3, but any Buffy is, well, Buffy, and therefore better than most other stuff.

But I can see why you'd be sour on 6 and 7, a year ago it would have soured me, too. It's all in the timing, I guess (and the demands of viewers who may or may not require consistancy...)

Undemanding (of Joss, anyway) Chrisisall

The big difference is that the inconsistencies in Serenity were practically essential due to the uniqueness of the cancelled-TV-show-to-movie thing. BtVS can make no such excuse.

Point taken.
I allow a lot more in Buffy than I would FF/Serenity. It is a show about demons and end-of-the-world ploys, after all.

I mean, even Dark Angel had some inconsistancies...Chrisisall

Ummm...Zack didn't; he got zapped.
Must have slipped out later that evening.

I can forgive it, though Chrisisall

actually I would argue that there was never any inconsistancy in Spike's wanting his soul back...

obviously Joss worded it very carefully so that the viewers would think that Spike was going to get the chip out...
but if we had, any of us, thought about it logically:
the chip wasn't a barrier to Spike hurting Buffy and he knew that...
so he wasn't talking about that.

Spike keeps repeating that he is going to give Buffy what she deserves, but what Buffy deserves is a man with a soul...

the clues were there all along, the only people who refuse to see that are the ones who wanted Spike to stay a villan and not invade Angel's realm of Only Ensoul Vampire.

Personally I rolled on the floor laughing (literally, fell off the couch and rolled on the floor) when Spike got his soul,
because I should have seen it coming.
The only reason I was fooled is because Joss made James Marsters play it as angry as possible...
that isn't an inconsistancy,
that is bait and switch
(perfectly legitimate IMO)

Embers saves the day with a logical analysis!
Thanks, now I know why it seemed to make sense to me.

I don't think the delivery of the line was fair to the viewer at all. The only way to realistically interpret that delivery is that Spike is coming back to do some serious damage.

I can't believe how much I'm enjoying discussing Buffy & Angel, it has been a long long time since I've given them the attention they deserve....

I guess it is time to take out my 7 seasons of Buffy and rewatch them all!

It is true that Joss is evil and loves to try to fool the fans.

Ditto. Actually, I've just recently finished rewatching all five seasons of Angel, so a Buffy retrospective should be on the list pretty soon...

MINIME

I have always thought that, in some way, the pre-soul Spike was aware that him coming back with a soul would in some way be a torment to Buffy - the whole vampire love/hate intermingled thing. He knew how difficult it would make life for her, and, as well as desiring to give her something good, wanted to give her some confusion and pain as well.

Season 7 (for all it's many annoyances) shows that in Buffy.

Loved season six. Favorite year. Yep it was dark but FULL of surprises. I cried, laughed, sat with jaw dropped, and sang along.

yeah, I'm rewatching it now and realizing it is one of my favorites too...
I love the geeks evil trio
I love the angst
and I love Loved LOVED the finale:
w/Willow, and Giles (oh how I had missed Giles)!!

I had found S5's finale dull, with all the running around and Glorificus,
but S6 really had me on the edge of my seat
(and frequently falling off my seat onto the floor)

and of course there was never anything as wonderful as OMWF! *singing along*
