Season two was undeniably powerful, but I found it hard to take all that seriously; I knew Angel would be back, somehow. But the finale of S3 really hit me; Angel was letting her go, for good. It was so much more real to me than his 'death'.

What does everyone else think?

(Feel free to morph this into a 'Which season is better' thread, if you want to get into more than just the finales)

I think I knew he'd be back at the end of Season 2 but the characters didn't. Which is what made it powerful.

The end of 3 seemed more fake to me. Like he was leaving because the networks wanted him to. Not because that's what his character would do.

I go with Season 2 hands down. I love the Spike, Drusila, Angel evil combo. They were the best villians the show ever had. The mayor was good but there's something about the invincible villians that makes them less interesting. I want someone Buffy can fight and really draw it out with.

I disagree with you there, I felt Angel loved her so much, he was doing the right thing for her, despite what pain this would bring both of them...it provided a really touching end to their love affair.
But I see your point about the S,D, and A combo, that was great.

But Spike bugs me Chrisisall

I think the second season finale was more powerful, although I watched it when it first aired, and back then, although you figured there was a fair chance he'd be back, you didn't know for sure. It was also a much more difficult choice, for Buffy to do what she had to knowing she had her own Angel back, and then with her deciding to run away and leave everything behind.

With S3 it was more like "Okay, we defeated the big Bad, and Angel's leaving like he said he would" rather than any big dramatic movement for any of the characters.

But it was easier to take the whole school fighting a giant snake monster seriously? ;) Personally I always thought they went a bit too far with that. After that, no one in Sunnydale wouldn't know what was going on - it kind of upset the whole premise of the show, although they kind of dodged mentioning again in subsequent years.

They're both great!!!! If I had to choose I'd go with Season three just for the killer line from Oz about how they survived! Not the snake but High School!!!!

That's a tough call, honestly. The second season finale is much more "dramatic" and probably the "better" of the two, but if you get down to which one I'd rather watch, I'd say the third season finale, for two reasons. One, I was in high school at the time and graduated when the Scoobies did on the show, so there's that whole sentimentality thing. And one of my favorite moments on the show is when the whole school suddenly pull out weapons and attack The Mayor. It may be "cheesey," but it's fun at the same time.

And I thought the destruction of Sunnydale High was plumb.
I can think of another H.S. that would do well to come to the same end;)

But that was a while back Chrisisall

To borrow a phrase from Bruce Lee, my high school was an exercise in Organzed Despair, only two art teachers and one film teacher made it bearable.
I guess that's why I can relate to Buffy's H.S. years.

Hey, they destroyed the High School in the end of Rock And Roll High School, too!
