I have just finished the second season of Buffy, and
I have watched a bit of the first season of Angel on TV...
So I now that Angel is leaving.
My question is, should I finish the hole Buffy series before I start with Angel, or does the shows melt together at any point?

Hey,

Angel started after the end of season 3 of Buffy. You should watch the whole of season 3 of Buffy and then watch one episode of buffy season 4 and one episode of season 1 of Angel and alternate like that due to some crossover episodes between Buffy and Angel.

I'm not sure whether you should start with a Buffy episode or an Angel episode and I think there may have been a two week gap between the two series starting.

So I'd say make a start on season 3 of Buffy and maybe someone can help you with the details of which episode of season4/1 to start on.

Here's how it breaks down...

Buffy seasons 1-3.
Buffy season 4 and Angel season 1.
Buffy season 5 and Angel season 2.
Buffy season 6 and Angel season 3.
Buffy season 7 and Angel season 4.
Angel season 5.

If you don't want to be 'spoiled' for any plot lines or story arcs, that's how you should watch it.

There are a few cross overs, but even when there isn't there's usually some arc or plot that threads between the two and links them closely.

Usually it's safe to watch a Buffy episode, then the joining Angel episode (ie - episode 1 of Buffy, episode 1 pg Angel), because most stories will begin on Buffy and carry over to Angel, however due to screening times and such, Buffy S7 and Angel S4 get a bit dicey time wise.

I used to have the timeline they should be watched in, I'll try and dig it out for you, okay?

Spoileriffic stuff here, in my answer, so imma tag it as such.

Select to view spoiler:

Actually it was bad beer - why ?

Because it was the only time I really found buffy attractive.. when she was (wait for it..)
CAVE BUFFY!

Also, at the very end where wanna-be boytoy is sliming on his transparent apologies and we were rolling our eyes waiting for the inevitable forgiveness... we started chanting..
HIT HIM, HIT HIM, HIT HIM!

So when she clouted him, we hit the floor laughing our asses off for nearly ten minutes - one of my most pleasant memories of the entire series, that is.

Hush was pretty durn good too, Anya cracked me up.

WHITEFALL

I'm just starting season 3 of buffy (the glory of 1-disc netflix, which will probably take me a year or so to watch the whole series) and well... having read your response....

If i were to just go ahead and watch buffy all the way, then switch to angel? would i be too spoiled in angel?

And when you say cross over....... were the series' made so much at the same time that they were sort of the same shows?

basically my question is: if i were to watch all the buffy first, will it reveal the major plot points (finales) of angel? (see: OMG ANGEL'S MADE OF CHOCOLATE!!)

I survived a day in Whitefall and all I got was this lousy signature!

If you don't care about losing some of the enjoyment of the few episodes where cast members cross over between shows, then from my recollection you can get away with watching buffy before angel but not the other way around. But I might be wrong about that.

However to really enjoy both shows I'd alternate.

You wouldn't be spoiled by watching all of Buffy first - they're two independent series afterall, and what one character does in one series doesn't have a drastic effect on what happens in the other.

But as has been pointed out above, if you do alternate (which I'd recommend), then you should watch the Buffy episode first.

I've got a list here http://www.destinything.com/id80.html which shows how the episodes line up against each other - was going to highlight cross-over shows but haven't got round to it - I think Harsh Light of Day/In The Dark were the first though. Besides, could get a bit ambiguous - do we include telephone calls where we only see one side of the conversation? Does a Buffy character visiting LA in Angel Season 5 still constitute a cross-over, given that Buffy was no longer on air?!

OK, having thought about this some more...with regards to one character in particular you really need to see both series to appreciate how they turned out. So, no - I wouldn't advocate watching all 7 seasons of Buffy and starting on Angel.

Hello, have a question and thought this was probably a good thread for it.

I haven't really watched any of Buffy or Angel, but from what I've heard from friends and stuff i'd prob enjoy Angel more. My question is, do you have to watch Buffy to understand Angel or does it stand well on its own?

Thanks

Pog

Well, as stated above, they are technically stand alone series (even more so after Buffy left the WB) but IMO you'll get a lot more out of Angel if you've seen Buffy. For instance, the character I referred to above (albeit vaguely!), if you haven't watched Buffy you really won't get what that's all about. The shows do differ in tone, and it's true that many people seem to prefer Angel. But so much of Angel has it's roots in Buffy, personally I can't imagine one without the other.

Not really.

There are a few shared plot lines and characters, but nothing that you can't work out for yourself.

If you do like Angel, you'll probably like Buffy, so give it a go, but it's not necessary in my opinion.

Pog, I'm pretty new to both series, but I've seen seasons 1-4 of Buffy, and season 1 of Angel, and I'd say, if you like funny character interaction (and you either loved or hated High School), do (er, I mean watch) Buffy. If you want kick-ass demon action, go for Angel.
I like Buffy better, but that's just me.

But then, I like Dark Angel better than both of them (had to get that in).

And if you're looking for a guide on how to watch them chronologically so that the storyline crossovers match up correctly on both shows, here's how you do it:

Buffy S4/Angel S1 and Buffy S5/Angel S2: Alternate evenly from one to the other--one Buffy, then one Angel, then Buffy, then Angel, etc. You should be watching Angel episode 3 right after Buffy episode 3, and Angel episode 8 after Buffy episode 8, and so on. And always make sure the Buffy ep comes first!

Buffy S6/Angel S3: Doesn't really matter, since there's almost no x-overs during these seasons. Angel episode 4 ("Carpe Noctem") should come right before Buffy episode 4 ("Flooded"). The rest of 'em, watch however you want.

Buffy S7/Angel S4: This is the trickiest year to match. Buffy episode 17 ("Lies My Parents Told Me") should be watched right before Angel ep 15 ("Orpheus"), and Angel ep 22 ("Home") should be watched before Buffy ep 21 ("End of Days").

I like to watch my DVDs in the correct order, so I worked that timeline out awhile back. Hope it's useful to someone else, as well.

Actually, I think that after Buffy moved to UPN, Angel episodes started airing before Buffy episodes, so actually, it should be:

Buffy seasons 1-3.
Buffy season 4 and Angel season 1.
Buffy season 5 and Angel season 2.
Angel season 2 and Buffy season 6.
Angel season 4 and Angel season 7.
Angel season 5.

Though actually, you ought to do alternating episodes.

In fact, I ought to do alternating episodes.

The first few seasons of Buffy are almost a must to understand Angel's character fully. That's pretty much all you should do to keep up. The two series coincide with one another at various points but there are no hints or anything that would spoil the other. I watched Buffy in full before watching Angel and I actually prefer it. Angel is a branch-off of Buffy so getting the background on the characters and seeing them appear in Angel delighted me.

Alternating episodes and such isn't necessary in my opinion, they aren't that connected. It just gives you more of a wait until you see what's next for both parties.

BUFFYANGELFREAK

OH DEFFINATLEY WATCH BUFFY IF YOU WANNA WATCH ANGEL!!!!!!!!!!!!
*cough*
excuse the outburst. It's just that there are so many in-jokes and character development that began in Buffy. So Angel (iv always thought he got a little wimpy on his series) makes more sense and is actually a lot funnier. When Spike enters Angels' series, most of the diologue can be brought back to Buffy. And....yeah. Buffy is a must for Angel watchers and vice-versa.

P.S- You can alternate the shows if you want, but if you are a complete fanatic like me. Otherwise you probably wont notice any gaps in storylines.

P.P.S- Iv just reaised the last person to comment on this thread was here....last year or something.
Anyway the point still stands.
