Who else here would have loved Miss Calender to NOT get killed, and live to become Giles' wife at some point in the series?

I really liked her...

Chrisisall....you must notice,
with Joss: happy relationship means painful horrible death...
the only way to stay alive is some big break-up
(Riley is very lucky he wasn't killed off!)

Joss is very cruel...
but he once said he has no intention of writing about the boring world of happy people.

Whoah, talk about cruel- I just realized, and changed the thread title for latecomers like me who don't yet know...
I like, cried when Angelus looked at her...

Ohhh, man, you really like to torture yourself, don't you?

I loved Miss Calendar, I really did. She was so great and her dry sense of humour made me laugh. Plus, her sense of dress was all manner of shiny!

Her and Giles were so good together.

Fortunately, for me, I entered Buffy in S3 and saw the first two seasons retroactively, so I kinda knew what was gonna happen. I loved her, but I didn't grow too emotionally attached to her.

Did you ever catch Robia La Morte in her Prince days? It's really very funny. You watch as he strips her clothes off, leaving her in that little skimpy red underweat set and you're all "Hey! Miss *Calendar*?!?!?"

The thought of Giles catching one of those video clips makes me giggle more than it should.

I'm a weird one.

Yup. I'm gonna have to look that up.

I was smitten by Ms. Calendar from the moment she strode into the Computer Lab with her big dark sunglasses, her coffee cup, and her no-nonsense non-condecending attitude. She was a Techno-Pagan and a football fan! I'm not even a football fan myself, but Ms. Calendar was, Wow! And this is before any talk of shinny dangly things. The night she died, I think I actually hated Joss.

Anyway, the non Buffy Robia project that cought me by surprise was Rob Schrab's no-budget sci-fi action short Robot Bastard.

I really liked the character... a whole lot. But I'm afraid that if she were to have survived, she and Giles would be in a "forever together, yet forever apart" or a :something is always wrong" deal, a-la Joss. But as far as a happy ending, their getting together would have been a good one.

I would have loved it. But I understand Joss' motivation on this one. He had to sell us the idea that Angelus really was evil.

So what's next Chris? BUFFY 6 or ANGEL 2?

Angel 2, but that's gonna get severly pushed back due to this space movie coming out soon.

THIEFJEHAT

I admit, I didn't like Jenny's death when I first watched it. But now I look back on it the way an adult views moments of growing pains in life that makes one stronger.

Jenny's death served three purposes in the grand picture:

1. It demonstrated just how evil Angelus actually is. Angelus can go around killing side characters and we don't feel much regret. But when he kills someone we actually care about, we feel the loss. The next time we see Angelus perform an act of murder we really dislike him. As we should. This is what makes the Buffy/Angel tragedy such great storytelling.

2. It was the catalyst moment that lead Willow down her magical path. Remember that after Miss Calinder died, Willow took over her class. This led to her explorations of gypsy magic that was the legacy of Jenny's family and later to other magics with Amy in season 3.

3. Jenny's death was a key moment in the development of Giles' character. Season 4 was so important for Giles as it detailed his struggle he was having with himself in regards to his life purpose. In season 2 we need Giles to glimpse happiness and have it snatched away in order to establish a foundation for the struggle for self-actualization in season 4.

I trust Joss. Over the years he has proven to me that he has a grand plan and painful events often serve the greater good.

I only regret season 7 buffy.

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.

Actually, in all the many years I've been a Buffy fan, and through all the many times I've watched Season 2, I've never watched Ms Callendar die. I've always either had to turn away or watch the thing in fast forward. Which possibly makes it both the best and worst moment of the whole series.

I'm with THIEFJEHAT - it *needed* to happen to move the storylines along. Still, it was one hell of a shock to see. What disturbed me most about it wasn't just that he killed her - it was the WAY he killed her. Cold. Ruthless. He didn't even drain her blood or offer to turn her into a vamp; he just snapped her neck and threw her away like trash.

It was one of those moments that let you know, in no uncertain terms, just HOW evil Angelus really was. Seeing him torment and/or kill "lesser" characters just wouldn't give you the same feel for him. Seriously, after he killed Jenny, I didn't think I'd ever be able to like Angel again. Just one more way Joss toys with our emotions...

Grrrr. Arrghh.

Ditto. Well put, all y'all!
Then, the way Angelis plays with Giles, roses strewn in his apartment, leading him up the stairs in anticipation. Much as I hated Angelis for all of this, it's one of my favorite examples of Joss plumbing the depths of depravity.

I'm not the first to point this out, I'm sure, but what else could possibly happen to a character named "Calendar"?

Her days were numbered.

Foreshadowing, meet black comedy. Black comedy, foreshadowing. I just know you two are going to get along famously...
