I'm still working on my BUFFY marathon (snow day is helping!) and I'm watching "Lie to Me" right now. I love the episode as much as ever, but Willow's makeup is truly scary. If you're puzzled, I'm referring to the scene in her bedroom with Angel. She's in her pajamas and is wearing so much makeup I can't understand why Joss didn't have a problem with it. I realize she was about to start dating Oz at that point, so naturally she would be experimenting with makeup, but it's just totally overdone and looks horrible and inappropriate.

Okay, it's been like 8 years and I need to get over it, but it still bugs.

You're not alone in this view. Alyson looked terrible then.

Yeah, the hair and makeup people didn't do her many favors during those first couple of seasons. It's really one of the only things that spoils S2 for me. Aly of S3 thru 5, on the other hand... nothing else cuter!

I guess the reason why it still bugs me so much is that it's still SO distracting. On Cordelia or Buffy you probably wouldn't notice it as much, because they're the "mall girls". On Willow, it's like a neon sign flashing on her face. There's just no getting around it.

Also, I remember a scene in "Buffy vs. Dracula" where Willow did have terrible makeup on. She was sitting in a chair in Giles's place describing her experience at meeting Drac.

SAHARA

It's funny how that kind of thing bugs you and you just can't get it out of your head!
I know in Out of Gas when they show Mal gazing at soon-to-be Serenity whilst the used spaceship guy is talking Nathan's makeup or the lighting or something makes him look really weird. It could be me, but it bugs me every time I see that episode. And it's my favorite episode!

Another case like that--for me, anyway--is James in "In the Dark" over on Angel. Whether the AtS crew did something weird to his makeup or what, but he just doesn't look like 'Spike' to me in that entire ep...

I keep thinking about Joss (God, when do I NOT think about Joss...anyhoo) saying in the commentary for "Welcome to the Hellmouth" about the scene where Cordelia's telling Buffy (who's sitting with Willow) about the dead guy in Aura's locker and that one part was shot at a different time of day and how he hoped no one noticed how the lighting was different between shots or something. As many times as I've seen the episode, I just never think to pay attention to things like that, even when they're pointed out to me sometimes.

So why wasn't he irked at all about Willow's severe makeup (which was much more obvious in my opinion) in an episode HE directed?

I actually love that scene...and Mal's look in it. He looks like such an innocent boy with the soft lighting of the "years ago past" scenes and his rosy cheeks. He looks absolutely and completely taken with Serenity. He is in love, and it's for keeps. It was actually really touching. He's already hardened, faithless Mal, and yet he finds that innocence of first love again? Wonderful moment....and the lighting and make-up only add to it.

I never really noticed Willow's make-up. They never really let Willow shine...throughout the series. To see Alyson looking amazing on How I Met Your Mother is quite a shocker. She's a serious beauty and they must've worked overtime to keep her in the "cute" category on BtVS.

And if you notice the make up is heavy on David also..maybe it was the lighting in the room...it really doesn't match the rest of the show...

I'm a straight woman, but I think Willow (and Alyson) surpassed "cute" by season six. Except for the whole scary, veiny period.

But I guess they always did keep her "cute" in comparison to Buffy, the so-called "pretty one". But my opinion still stands.

Heavy makeup on David: Do you mean when he was extra-pale? I think they did that when he was sickly or evil, to make him seem a little different to what we were used to seeing so we would know that something wasn't quite right. They did the same with Spike.

You have to remember that Willow and Xander were supposed to be the geeky losers that no one would look twice at. Kinda hard to do since they were both played by very attractive people, but they weren't supposed to be gorgeously coiffed like Cordelia. Buffy got away with it on account of having been a Cordelia-clone in her old school.

Have to admit I don't tend to notice makeup during the first couple of seasons, except every now and then when I notice Angel wearing lipstick (very distracting!) Usually the only thought that comes to mind is "My GODS! They all look so YOUNG! How old AM I???"

I guess I never noticed lipstick, oddly enough. Is there a specific episode or scene you're referring to?

Edit: That's why I found Willow's overdone makeup in "Lie to Me" so distracting. It was just SO not fitting for the character (or Alyson, truth be told.).

I'm fairly sure I noticed it in the pilot... And in another season one episode, but I don't remember off hand. Time to watch my DVDs again!

Oh yeah...lipstick is there ocassionally. As was the eyeliner on David. A few times it REALLY stood out. Lie to Me I think being one of those.

I've never found Willow that attractive. Cute, maybe...in the first few seasons. I HATED most of her wardrobe and more often than not, her hair, in the later seasons.

Then you see Aly done up as Aly would do herself and she's a bombshell.
