Xander Harris once famously said: "I’m just gonna go home, lie down, and listen to country music. The music of pain."

And this year's ignoble prize, awarded to people who do valid scientific research on silly topics, went to STEVEN STACK, at Wayne State University JIM GUNDLACH, of Auburn University for their paper:

"The Effect of Country Music on Suicide"

Findings: Listening to lots of country music seems to make people suicidal.

Clearly, the street smart genius of Xander Harris was on this occasion, as on so many others, woefully underestimated. Science has just caught up to him.

All you have to do is listen to it. For me, three seconds of steel guitar is all it takes to make my teeth ache. I don't even need to hear the lyrics.

I would dearly love to get a look at the proposal Wayne University got for that study, though. How does one write a grant request for a study to prove that an entire music industry might be responsible for suicide?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Some country music is good, the more upbeat, fun songs are okay. The twangy, "my wife left me" type songs are just too depressing to listen to and not want to jump off a bridge.

My musical preferences tend towards Requiem Masses and the rock group Garbage. I don't think I am in a position to criticize country music as depressing.

Um, I'm lost. Uh, I'm Angry. And I'm Armed.

Then you must be very lucky to NOT be related to folks who listen to it. I rode with my sister to Iowa once for a funeral. She drove (because since her teenager started to, she's not allowed) and then we listened to some of her music, which includes George Strait and uh... what's his name. Big black hat, wins a lot of awards... "Thunder Road" is one of his tunes, maybe?

Like I said, not an afficianado by any means. I only know George Strait because said sister has a crush and just about every CD the man made. Not so bad. You know, for the first 15 minutes or so. But as she doesn't get to drive, she also doesn't get to listen to her music either and I guess I'm a good sister. She did make up for it with homemade chocolate chocolate chip cookies.

I draw...therefore I am.

Well, I don't really listen to it that much, but I like Johnny Cash - his voice just has this resonating quality that I like. Besides that, I don't listen to it.

Huh. I happen to really enjoy the music of pain.

Of course, country has changed a lot (as a lot of it has moved into the pop sound) but the good, old-school country like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Patsy Cline and others can really pluck at the heart strings.

Take a listen some time to new artists like Keith Urban or Rascal Flatts to hear how much country has changed.

What do you get when you play a country-western song backwards?
You get your dog back,
You get your truck back,
You get your wife back,
You get your job back,
and you sober up.

"What kind of music is normally played around here?"

"Oh. We have both kinds. County and western."
