3 dead in Oregon mall shooting

Panicked customers rushed to the exits when a gunman opened fire Tuesday at a mall outside Portland, Oregon. Some people huddled behind store counters and hid behind racks of clothing. The mall's Santa dropped to the ground.

Three people were killed, including the shooter, said Lt. James Rhodes of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot, he said. One person suffered a traumatic injury.

Witnesses said a masked man with a gun headed toward the food court at the two-story Clackamas Town Center mall, located about 11 miles southeast of downtown Portland.

A woman told CNN affiliate KOIN that she saw a man wearing a hockey mask jogging through Macy's and wielding an assault rifle.

Outside Macy's, gunshots echoed where a man portraying Santa Claus was snapping photos with kids.

"I heard two shots, then 15 or 16 more shots," he told CNN affiliate KGW. "I hit the floor."

The sounds of gunfire rang out through the mall, witnesses said.

"We heard one gunshot. It sounded like something fell," David Moran, an employee at the mall, told CNN. "Then it was a matter of two or three seconds, and then it was just rapid gunfire."

"I thought I was going to die," he said. "The gunshots were so loud, it was very scary. ... Kids were crying. Parents were crying, too."

Inside Sears, some customers burst into tears as word spread of the shooter going store to store, Christina Fisher told KOIN. http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/11/us/oregon-mall-shooting/?iref=obinsite

Being as how Rap gets his jollies by posting every conceivable article about Muslim extremists doing something bad, I figure why not post about shootings, since most of the time they go unnoticed.

I guess this and the previous one mean we should start putting armed guards at all malls...and they'll need several, since a mall is a big place to police.

As an aside; to all the gun folk (notice I didn't call you a derogatory name, as some do those of us wishing for SOME restrictions on guns), I had a question: When you say restricting some kinds of guns won't stop what's happening, have you ever considered the idea of trying SEVERAL things, gun restrictions being only one of them? Yeah, restrictions won't stop this stuff, but how about some other ideas to use in conjunction with them. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not counting individual gun deaths from bar fights, marital disputes, robberies, etc., or this thread would go on forever. Just senseless violence on a multi-person scale.

Man killed, 3 others wounded in Trenton shooting

TRENTON, N.J. -- One man was killed and three other people were wounded when shots rang out at a home in New Jersey's capital city.

Trenton police say two men and two women were "hanging out" on the porch of a city home when two people walked up to them just before 3 a.m. Saturday and started shooting.

The two women and one of the men all ran into the home, while the other man - who was shot in the chest - went to another nearby home, where he soon collapsed and died.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined. http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/new_jersey&id

Three people, gunman found dead in Colo. home after police standoff

A barricaded gunman and three people were found dead in an Aurora, Colorado, home after police exchanged fire with the gunman to end a standoff Saturday, authorities said.

Five hours into the incident, a SWAT team in an armored vehicle broke out a house window, and the gunman fired upon the vehicle, without injury to the officers, police said.

Police didn't return fire at the time.

An hour later, the gunman fired upon officers from a second-floor window, but this time, police returned fire, striking the suspect, authorities said.

No officers were injured.

Woman hiding with kids shoots black intruder

WSBTV
3 Jan 2013

LOGANVILLE, Ga. — A woman hiding in her attic with children shot an intruder multiple times before fleeing to safety Friday.

The incident happened at a home on Henderson Ridge Lane in Loganville around 1 p.m. The woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window, according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman. He said she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar.

But the man eventually found the family.

"The perpetrator opens that door. Of course, at that time he's staring at her, her two children and a .38 revolver," Chapman told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh.

The woman then shot him five times, but he survived, Chapman said. He said the woman ran out of bullets but threatened to shoot the intruder if he moved.

"She's standing over him, and she realizes she's fired all six rounds. And the guy's telling her to quit shooting," Chapman said.

The woman ran to a neighbor's home with her children. The intruder attempted to flee in his car but crashed into a wooded area and collapsed in a nearby driveway, Chapman said.

Deputies arrested 32-year-old Atlanta resident Paul Slater in connection with the crime. Chapman said they found him on the ground saying, "Help me. I'm close to dying." Slater was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment. Chapman said Slater was shot in the face and neck.

In February, Slater was arrested on simple battery charges, according to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office. He has been arrested six other times in the county since 2008.

Kavanaugh was the first reporter at the scene as deputies investigated. The victim's husband told Kavanaugh he's proud of his wife. He was on the phone with her as the intruder broke in.

"My wife is a hero. She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do as responsible, prepared gun owner," Donnie Herman said.

He said he's thankful for his family's safety.

"Her life is saved, and her kids' life is saved, and that's all I'd like to say," Herman said.

Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri learned from Chapman late Friday night that slater has been placed on a ventilator and suffers from punctured lungs, a punctured liver and a punctured stomach.

He said if Slater survives the night, doctors will try to operate in the morning to repair the damage.

Chapman said Slater has four exit wounds.

Slater is currently being charged with burglary.

I thought this was about the lady that shot the dude who broke into her house. Saved her two kids. Nope, she was a lawcabiding citizen protecting her home and two small children...that does not count for anything anymore.

Hee, hee, hee...it would be funnier if it weren't so true, Kiki. We just saw it played out right here, and we SHOULD save it for use over and over and over and over and over...would spare us all a lot of time and effort.

I loved the "truncated Second Amendment". Right on.

As to the other, that one example of someone succeeding at self-defense is getting kind of old, as often as it's been used. And I can come up with about a hundred (maybe even a thousand) stories of people being killed with guns for EVERY story anyone can come up with about someone successfully avoiding death, rape, robbery or anything ELSE by use of a gun. Not even a contest, and everyone knows it.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.
