Bad day at Black Rock. That's what my Dad used to call days like this. Bad day at Black Rock.
I miss my Dad. I'm almost 50 years old. I'm at an age when folks expect a lot from you sometimes. ( Not here, by the way.. this is paradise!) In fact in many ways who you are and how you're treated is based solely on your performance as an adult on a day to day basis.
I live in the Midwest, I'm surrounded by working men and women who take very little time to be careful of what they say, or to extend a kind word. It's a harsh place sometimes living in one of the poorest places in the state.
I miss my Dad because he was one of the few people in my life who accepted me the way I am.
Warts and all. He didn't expect me to be proper and not forward. He didn't expect me to be girly and not geeky. He wasn't particularly fond of SciFi at all, yet he didn't hesitate to hold the antenna on our old Zenith just so because I wanted to see Kirk and Spock boldly go where no man ( or girl!) had gone before. He never discouraged me. I read Asimov, Heinlein, and Superman comic books. I wrote scifi stories ( won a prize in 4th grade! only thing I ever won besides a white pony from the Bookmobile, but that's another story. I can hear the crickets now..... wtf is a Bookmobile?) He liked me just the way I was. Didn't let me ever think that I wasn't perfectly special just the way I was.
Thank you Dad. I love you and I miss you.

I'll never forget that thread when I got my browncoat.
I think I was talking about Blue Oyster Cult and 'Don't Fear the Reaver.'
Here's to ya, and maybe a good day at White Rock, as Jewel might say.

You never truely appreciate someone until they're gone, and then you wonder where the big empty hole inside you came from.
I can only hope I have the kind of impact your dad had on you for my girls.
I believe it makes for beautiful people, much like yourself.

Safe,
Coming from you that is a high compliment. Thank you so much.
I read your blog about Valentine's Day ( on Valentine's Day!). I know that you are being an excellent Dad to your girls and I know they will look up to you and appreciate you exactly the same way I do my Dad.
Thank you for that too....we women do really grow up to be better women when we have special men in our lives like that.

FollowMal,
Any time the RW is getting ya down...any time people are dumping on you for being you....just remember this: you are our beacon. You are the one who makes taking the plunge and joing the BDF (best damn fanbase) ever oh so enjoyable. Plus the virtual browncoats you hand out aren't nothing to sneeze at either;)

Oh, Diane,
It's really good to be "home", although vacation was nice. Things were so green there; here is brown and hot and dirty; kind of like a blow-dryer with sand.
But the remembrance of the "bookmobile" made me smile -- Good Gods, girl, how old are we, anyway? Hope everything is better, now; since the when the post was first submitted. Since missing your dad, well, that's going to take a bit longer, but at least you can now smile through the tears, can't you? When my daddy goes, well, that's going to take a lot of help. I failed miserably at Pop's; don't even want to think about my daddy!
I'm just glad you're home, safe and sound. Small towns suck! Grew up in a small California town. I miss it, except when I start thinking about all of the gossip and backbiting, then I remember why we left!
Things could be worse -- we could live in Ely, Nevada!
