When writing a formal essay, it is important to remember one thing above all else. All sentences begin with capital letters and end with either question marks or PERIODS!!!
Not commas, not semicolons, not dashes, not brackets, not random characters, and not mid-word.
THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Finally realizing that North American high schools are seriously screwing over future generations by passing them with piss-poor English language skills, eh Cybersnark? Or is this the plea after years of slow sinking into depression? Cuz even as a university student, I know that some of my peers couldn't write a proper sentence even if a gun was held to their head and told they would get capped the first time they boobed:(

Oh, this comes from an essay I was proofreading yesterday (my part-time job). Engineering students are the worst of the worst --NO english training at all.

Well...not since high school at least. Not unless they took English Lit as an elective;)
But yeah...too much equation-orientation for those scaffold monkeys. My buddy in Physics is just as bad;)

So you have a somewhat pathetic English teacher who is threatened by alternate methods of punctuation??

I hear you. I work with a bunch of people, some college-educated and some not, who couldn't string together words into a proper sentence if their lives depended on it. This is true in both their writing and their speaking. If I read or hear "I seen it" one more time, I think I'll throw a fit and scream "I saw it" repeatedly until they take me away in a straitjacket.

Yepp, feel with you there as well. *shudders* I'd probably be all over them and yell or something...
