Well said!!! And how true, especially in this case. The more he realizes how important River is to the Alliance, the more he'll try to keep her away from them. Plus, he's just that kinda guy.

The enemy of your enemy is your friend. Very true. I think it is how it started out, but I would like to think that Mal is really noble at heart (I mean, think about in The Train Job, he returns all the meds because other people need them), and that he felt it was the right thing to do because the Alliance was hurting River (of course, also, it would piss the Alliance off, so that's frosting on the cake).

you all have very good points... but one little detail that i think seals the deal has been missed.

when simon confronts mal in the hall, and asks why mal's so afraid of the alliance... he comments that mal might as well be working for them since he's so eager to turn in river for a "pat on the head." if mal turned simon and river over, he'd be nothing but a fawning lap-dog for the alliance, begging for scraps.

that and mal's just a big sweet heart!
