Calm down dear, it's only a TV show

Tuesday, February 23, 2010 8:48 PM

Ok, so there's a TV show I like to watch because of a particular pairing on there. Nothing wrong with that. I go on the internet and chat to other fans about it, all well and good.

But some of these fans are starting to get a little bit too obsessed, I mean the line between fiction and reality has not only become blurred but has completely disappeared.

It's just a TV show, it's not real life and I do not feel comfortable when these people not only slag of the characters when they do something they don't like but also slag off the actors playing them.

I am very disturbed by this atm.

You find that everywhere in every fandom, unfortunately. I don't know if this particular incident is shipping related, that's pretty common, but it's even common misaim hate at an actor instead of their character.

First the obligatory warning:

Anyway. Some of us do endeavor to try to keep open minds. Really! So don't lose faith yet! We're all browncoats still.

Little baffled though that people can actually hate some of the characters though... Let alone the actors. Probably a good thing I missed whatever this was.

he he had to laugh at those

i've been back on the forum at least now it's moved on slightly to blaming the writers not the actors

Sometimes I wonder if I should ever have mentioned TV Tropes to you, Byte. lol. And the defense said...

Hobbleit, don't let it get to you.
Hating the actor for the character or vice versa is plain stupidity.
At least there's troll country here where flamers can go bother each other instead.

Think of it as the reverse of the Twilight spammers that pop up on every single page of youtube around the release of their movies. Irritating, like an infestation of spacebugs, not Reavers.

Same thing happened to me about a TV show that's based on a series of books. The creator of the show is going in a somewhat different direction and devotees of the books are up in arms. BTW their nickname are the "rabids".

The solution was to create an entirely new forum where every one could discuss the show in relative peace and dignity. Including devotees of a ship that the "rabids" intensely disliked.

In fact, the new forum has exploded in size lately as the "rabids" have run others off the "official" boards with their hatred of any view but their own.

It doesn't help the "rabids" that the actors portraying the ship that they hate are actually engaged in real life and have been together for almost 3 years now.
Apparently the chemistry at the "chemistry read" exploded in real life too.
