Couldn't' we legally apply to the government as a formal religion and form our own church?
Religion: Whedonism (based on the writings of Joss Whedon's Firefly/Serenity)
Bible: The transcripts of all the shows collected together to from a book. Additional interviews with Joss would become letters to the churches from Joss. We could have them translated in the different language of the religious members.
Head of the Church: Joss Whedon
Apostles:
1) Mal
2) Zoë
3) Wash -- and Martyr
4) Book -- and Martyr
5) Inara
6) Jayne
7) Kaylee
8) Simon (hey, this really works!)
9) River
10) Serenity
11) River's feet (this is one of my favorite Apostles. I could worship her feet all day long.) We might even form a monastic sect where day and night her feet are worshipped.
12) Saffron
Some doctrine. Members of this church meet weekly for services to hear the 'verse contained in the good news of Joss Whedon. Daily pray is watching a Firefly episode. ???
Members promote love and give evangelical support. We could send out missionaries for the conversion and salvation of those who have not heard the verse and also to help bring the show back on TV. ?????
We collect money during services, bingo nights and church showings of the episodes and movie.
Money goes to support evangical missionaries and movie sequel. ?????
Deacons are people who hosts shindigs and or weekly services. ???
Church Holidays:
1) Joss birthday
2) Apostles birthdays
3) The first day firefly appeared on TV
4) Death of firefly (last day it appeared on FOX)
5) Day the movie first appeared in Theaters (different day for each part of the globe where movie opened.)
6) ?
Just some thoughts in my head, there is much more that needs fixing, all input welcomed. Maybe it should be fashion in a more eastern flavor, I am not familiar with eastern religions but I'm opened to anything.
Believe!

Behold, that there was Buffy the Vampire Slayer which was a Box Office bomb, which begat Buffy the Vampire Slayer which was a UPN smash hit, which begat Angel that I did not watch, which begat Firefly the Big Damn TV show, which began Serenity the Big Damn Movie and all the generations from Buffy the Vampire Slayer which was a Box Office bomb to Serenity the Big Damn Movie were 13.
And in the day of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which was a UPN smash hit and Angel which I did not watch, there came Firefly, the Big Damn TV show.
Lo, for the Fox Network caused a great plague of locusts to come upon Firefly and consumeth the bounty of the Market, and Firefly was rendered asunder and a locust did fly up Joss’ nose and Joss did sneeze and blew forth a Big Damn Movie.
And Joss went unto the Land of Fox TV and spake, saying “Fox Network why hast thou caused a plague of locusts to come upon Firefly and consumeth the bounty of the Market, such that Firefly was rendered asunder and a locust did fly up on my nose that I did sneeze and blew forth a Big Damn Movie?”
And Fox Network smote him on the head, saying “the bounty of thy nose is great but it shall never bring forth Firefly unto the land of Fox Network TV.”

NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
Actually, if it's Whedonism, it should include Buffy and Angel b/c well, in in a way, Buffy's kind of holy. Angel, he's seeking for redemption..very saint or fallen guy type of stuff.
But I'd say what you have there is Fireflyism which is part of the Whedon religion. lol I could swear I sound scary right now...
(So all in all, yes, it's possible for a religion-I__I;;)

Baptism would be in Mudder's Milk, naturally--and we could have our first internicene split over whether one should be baptized by immersion or sprinkling. (I am going to be of the immersion camp.)

Capital idea! (Also, Finn, that cracked me up but good :)
I heretofore decree Whedonism as the official religion of my universe.

In the USA it's not that hard to qualify but it is lot of paperwork and hasle to go through for some minor tax benefits. The easiest is to be an ordained minister of an already recognized church (you can probably still do this online) and then form a breakaway sect. Once you do that you need to incorporate with a board of directors. Then of course the IRS will be very interested in the finances of your new religion. They take a dislike to people who try to use the religious exemption as a tax dodge.
Or if you just want to be a religion without worrying about the IRS you don't need permision at all - just start preachin' brother.

Funny, cause I looked into those Star Wars geeks trying something like this a while back. A friend of mine in the Air Force claims that there's actually a good number of people who list "Jedi" as their religion on their dog tags. Further research revealed fans putting it as their religion on census forms in Australia and England. So far, though, I havn't heard of any structured organizations promoting "The Force".
I also stumbled across a national guardsman who had his name legally changed to Optimus Prime.

Have you ever:
Used your teeth as wire strippers?
Given yourself stitches?
Made improvised munitions with no base supplies?
Pissed in a canteen?
Gone a month without bathing?
If so, you MIGHT just be a !HOOAH MOTHERF*CKER!

Ok, I should have said this in the first post but I am not a lawyer. Not only am I not a lawyer I don't even play one on television. That said I'm not sure if it's even a legal requirement to havea previously ordained minister it just makes things smoother. As to the IRS the only reason to incorporate as a religion is for tax purposes so if you don't want the feds on you then just don't incorporate. Sure you lose the tax exemption but taxation in the states isn't all that onerous. I'd say it's only really worth it if you have enough money going through your organization to make it worthwhile to pay a lawyer and an accountant to keep all of the tax stuff in order.

We hold, we hold till Serenity comes back.
Sin:
Good? Evil? We're the ones with the guns. (Sorry wrong movie)
Penitence:
"Forgive me Shepherd for I have sinned it's been 3 weeks since I saw my last episode."
"Say three hail Whedons and watch the Train Job."
Pilgrimages:
Well there is the crew looking to rescue the Ariel ambulance. Once they get that together I think we all need to consider a road trip.
Sacraments:
We must snark with great wit and pepper our lanquage with Fireflyisms. We must share the word of Whedon to all who will hear; but not door to door because that's just creepy and rude.

I ripped apart the Nicene Creed. I am really bad at writing but we need a start of a prayer. I really don't care what the pray contains. So here is the start of a prayer.
Whedon Creed
We believe in Whedon the Father of good writing, Maker of Serenity and Firefly, and of all TV shows that were great and are to come. He spoke thru the Apostles (characters). The Whedon suffered under FOX and was canceled by them, and in two years he rose again according to his promise. He will come again in glory to judge the Networks and his Whedondom will have no end.
And we believe in the Spirit of the Browncoats, who proceedeth from the Whedon and being of one substance with the Whedon. And we believe in one holy Whedonistic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Mudders baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of Firefly, and the life of the verse to come. Amen.

Can number twelve please be River's branch from OiS? Please? I'm sort of in love with it, lol...
Possible Commandments (in no particular order):
1. Shot first. :-)
2. Someone tries to kill you, you try to kill 'em right back.
3. Yhe small concealable weapons always go to the far left of the place setting.
4. It's just an object. It doesn't mean what you think.
5. If you ever kill a person, let them be awake, facing you, and armed.
6. When you can't run anymore, you crawl... and when you can't do that, you find someone to carry you.
7. You can't stop the signal.
8. If you're going to stab someone in the back, have the balls to do it to their face.
9. Mercy is the mark of great men (or woman). Aim to be a good man (or woman. Well... aim to be all right.
10. Love. You can know all the math in the 'Verse, but take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her home.
This is a funny thread. :-) If there ever was a firefly church, though, I would be highly alarmed.

Saffron is a foxy lady, but, well... never underestimate my love for that gorram branch, lol. It will always be in my heart. If it can't be an apostle, than maybe an archangel?
Also, Saffron is sort of psycotic/evil, and never lived aboard Serenity. Of course, neither was the branch (except in River's mind...)
Maybe Wah's dinosaurs should be the tweleth apostle. Or Inara's shuttle. Or the mule. Or Zoe's gun (because it is the coolest gun ever. Or Vera (because she has a name). Something that has to do with Serenity herself.

Whedon Creed

The Whedon suffered under FOX and was canceled by them, and in two years he rose again according to his promise. He will come again in glory to judge the Networks and his Whedondom will have no end.
And we believe in the Spirit of the Browncoats, who proceedeth from the Whedon and being of one substance with the Whedon. And we believe in one holy Whedonistic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Mudders baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of Firefly, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

This whole thread is hi-larious! I love the Ten Commandments, except that of course the "First Rule of Flying" ought also to be the first commandment, right?
I had a friend who started a church once, the Church of Jeff. Same sort of thing, only most of the "beliefs" were either sex or alcohol related. It was a very small but (unfortunately) rather active church.

Loving the ideas, everyone!!!! Especially the 10 commandments - but I agree with Grizwald - the first rule of flying should be at the top.

We need several Hymns…. I used my favorite .. Whenever I hear this song, I cry like a baby.
Amazing Joss
"Amazing Joss, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.
T'was Joss that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Joss, my fears relieved.
How precious did that (Show) appear...
the hour I first believed."
Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Joss that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.
Whedon has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.
When we've been here 500 years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing Serenity's praise...
then when we've first begun.
"Amazing Joss, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see. (end)

What a bunch of bull. Even now, there won't be a sequel, not a chance. The only people who saw this movie were the fans + change, and that's not enough. I've heard the stories, all the damn stories about how people walked into a movie theater and saw 50 people who, they say, are first timers, and really enjoyed the movie. How the hell do they know what other people are thinking... 50 people especially. But look at the numbers: $24 Million, and not even $40 Million worldwide. And they say there will be a sequel, or a tv series, or whatever the hell people think is able to be produced after a movie just bombed at the box office. Look at "Saw II", "Saw II" cost $4 Million to make and has already grossed $30 Million in the US alone. Now that's what it takes to get a sequel going, a strong opening. Not some sad $10 Million in the first weekend. And they say, well compared to the per-theater gross, it did rather well, but not really, not at all. "Serenity" earned about $4160 per screen, and all that after "lots" of attention, or somewhat too little I say. And compared to the first "Saw" movie with little favor prior to the film ended up grossing over $18 Million in its first weekend alone, with $7895 per screen, at a production budget of $1,200,000 (that's right $1.2 Million). And I got my info from the-numbers.com so I ain't making this stuff up.

Now, as to incorporating, tax-exempt status, et al, I don't see a problem there. Let's face it: according to Fox and Universal, neither the show nor the movie really made any money, so we're ALREADY a non-profit group!
And you ladies should stop with all the talk of Mal's maypole and such. Might make a feller feel left out.

But I might be in, not having any other religion cluttering up my brain and all. Long as I don't have to grovel, bow, and scrape. Or anoint Joss's feet with oil. Summer's, definitely, but not Joss's.

Let me say, as a Legally Ordained Rverend, it is possible to do so if you feel strongly enough about this.
I might suggest though something not as encompassing, may "The Church of Serenity"
Observe teh Holidays based on Serenity and Firefly.
I would think that Malcolm Reynolds being the Main Character should hold the
place of greatest Reverence, espcially with such commandments as "Hold, Until I get back"
You would then need to scribe a Gospel according to each of the crewmembers of Serenity
It actually isn't a bad idea....
If something is truly good and you believe strongly enough and are willing to
go the distance with it and not just joke about it, you an have a good religion there
There may well be a supreme message in the things Mal and his crew say and do
We cannot know all the ways that God chooses to make our lives worthwhile
Someone posted about people Claiming their relgion ot be Jedi on a voter registration
Teh Jedi Religion is not very far removed for most mainstream religions in concept.
This would do as well, who really cares if you call it Congregating or a Shindig?
All in all Mal is a verty honorable man and has a lot to teach as do his followers.
Let us not worship a single person like Joss
But lets then perhaps worship an ideal......I belive Serenity is in fact an Ideal

Canundrum69, I was thinking that the script from each episode would be a Gospel.
More like… The Good News According to Shindig, The Good News According to Train Job, The Good News According to Safe. Etc.
Joss and all the characters are to be worshipped, the characters bring the message created by Joss.
Joss creator, Characters=Apostles=Saints.
Each Saint has it's own characteristics, the people can and do interpret it in different ways.

To fill the gaps in the Apostles we could use writers, and crew, and producers, and such. Definately Tim Minear should be one.
I think the characters should be apostles. I see Mal as the messiah character coz we're to hold til he gets back. That makes his followers, or crew, apostles, with Tracy taking the place of Judas for me as he was a follower of Mal and Saffron was not. Joss would be the father of Mal.
HIXIE129, I think the gospels from each apostle would be different from scripts as each character has such a unique view of the verse and relationship to Mal.
I agree with CANUNDRUM69 that there could be a lot to learn as it's already brought together some very different people in a warm fuzzy kinda way. And I also think it would be a great story/parabel (sp?) and a hoot and a half.
I would join the Church of Serentiy in a heart beat. And I would love to write the gospel of River (having been a loon myself, I feel especially qualified:))

Hi, druidess,
I don't care; I want what the majority wants. (I just needed to say that one more time.) That was not directed to you.
Me personally, I look at it a little differently, I don't see Mal as the Messiah, Joss is the Messiah (God). He(Joss) has created the verse and everything in it. Mal and the characters are a way of bringing Joss's Word (The script) to us... That’s why the(characters) are the Apostles.
And using the scripts as Gospels eliminates some potential (technical problems.) Also everyone knows each and every word of every episode. So it's very easy to say "The next reading is from the Gospel According to the Shindig Episode, Scene one." And lastly Joss said that the ship Serenity was the 10th character and that River's feet was the 11th. Well although I would very much like to write about her feet, (very cute) it would be a little cumbersome. And lastly, lastly most of the Apostles in real life did not write the Gospels either. These are just my own thoughts.

Mommy, what is "sects"?
Well, little Billy, sects is when two people have the same fundamental belief but view the details differently, so they either start a holy war with thousands to millions of people killing thousands to millions of other people in a state of orgasmic religious extacy, or, they agree one will have bingo and the other won't.
Or maybe it's when two people are drunk and one has handcuffs.
Nonono, it's the belief thing.

I'm not sure if I'm real comfy with calling Joss "God."
I'm not interested in worshiping mortal people (they always let you down). And the real thing we're here for is Firefly, not Joss (although he is totally awesome, and we love him).
I think he'd have to be less of a God figure, and more of a Prophet. I mean... if you look at what he does, technically, he's more of a prophet. Also, I agree with the notion that the other writers and directors should be the apostles. Tim Minear should definately get some credit.
I like the idea of the characters being Saints, since that means we can have little candles to them, and pick our favorites, and etc.
I don't think that Saffron should get to be an apostle or saint or whatsits, since she's not technically a part of the ensemble, she's a guest start. I mean... she definately deserves some mention... just probably not on the level with the main ensemble.
And if we're giving guest stars mention, I think Nandi should get credit as a Martyr.
And objects such as River's Branch, Zoe's Gun, Wash's Dinosaurs, Veera, and so on, should be Holy Relics or some such like that.
The problem with having scriptures written by fans is that not every one can agree on that. If we take stuff directly from show, if it's all Canon material, I think that'll be the best way to keep everyone happy. Plus, it would be pretty cool to have a spiffy little book of all the scripts.
Of course, we can write prayers, proverbs, hymns, etc., because those are generally written by followers and you don't have to like them all because they're not technically considered docterine (at least not as far as I know).
But baptism in mudder's milk? Ew. I always picture mudder's milk being chunky... How about we're baptised in... i dunno... anything else.

Should I be disturbed, ashamed, incredulous or dying of laughter that this was the very first thread this late volunteer to the Browncoats has read here? Perhaps a combination of all the above? I know the last certainly applies.
In any case, I seem to have found my unit at last.
And Cap'n Tightpants has a plow, not a maypole, gorram it -- though I suppose it could be turned into a maypole if it were b --
*cough* Sorry, can't continue. My voice seems to be frightening the cattle. Maybe if I droned...
'And when the brightness of the 'verse was shut away in the oblivion of the hungry fox spirit, lo, did one and a thousandscore Browncoats raise their voices in keening grief and outrage. "Thou hast forsaken us!" cried they. "Nay, I have forgotten thee not," intoned The Whedon from yonder golden hills in the Valley of Serenity, "for this 'verse was created of mine very heart and blood and soul, and yea, its loss too pains me. Thus shall I toil ceaselessly until it is restored and one and all may once again partake of its shininess." In harmonious unison did the Browncoats cry their relief, but yet again spake The Whedon, "Alas, the wounds to mine heart and blood and soul have been grievous and many, and thus shall I require of thine aid. Go forth and speak of Serenity and her nine shiny souls that those beyond shall awaken the Browncoats within them, for yea, a true Browncoat well knows when injustice has been done to one and all, and none will stand to allow one's fellow Browncoats to twist in the wind thus. So shall each Browncoat rally to our shindig, until the noise we make is so great that oblivion shall be rendered asunder and the hungry fox spirit cannot help but return the 'verse which is rightfully ours. Fear not the long nights filled with Reavers ahead, my devoted, for although it take uncounted sunsets, no one can take the sky from us." Thus did The Whedon's Browncoats set forth and speak of Serenity and her nine shiny souls, and thus do the armies of Independence grow. Yea, with the steadfastness of fireflies burning in their hearts and true serenity glowing in their eyes do they yet march forth, until such a sunset as This Land is returned them as is just and proper. And none who send of the signal hath The Whedon ever forgotten.'
*peers about* Good, looks like the cattle's gone to sleep. Then again, maybe I need sleep more, seeing as I had only three hours last night and can only blame this post on too many strawberries.

Maybe Sake.

Hi Frankie,
I think that God can be of many essences, God of Creation, God of Love, God of truth, God of Redemption, God of healing and so on. Joss is Creator of Firefly/Serenity so maybe God of Story Telling? As for prophet, Jesus was God and a prophet too. So it still works.
I don't like that there should be more than 12 Apostles, anyone else can be Saints, or Bishops or something like. If more than 12 Apostles than the Bible would be broken, and we can't have that…
On Saffron, I think Saffron should be an Apostle. She was the best guest Character, she was really hot! She does fit the role of Judas the betrayer, and lastly she is still (technically) married to Mal, so she is a Mrs. Apostle.
Good point of Nandi, she definitely needs to classified as a Martyr
I do think the different objects like the gun, dinosaurs, etc should be holy relics…
Do you think we can have the branch as an Archangel? Because Arcadia has mention to me a couple of times about the branch (still trying to figure this one out) and in fact Arcadia said, "Never underestimate my love for that gorram branch, lol. It will always be in my heart. If it can't be an apostle, than maybe an archangel?"
It really sounds to me that there is some real connection between her and the branch (which is really a gun) but who am I to judge, I got this thing for River's feet, Arcadia is a tree isn't it. Maybe that's the connection..
And we definitely need more prayers, we need at min, a prayer to each apostle, Archangel, and so on.
