Hi, there.
I have been bouncing an idea around about building an Independent Soldier costume...since seeing the pilot episode and The Message, I decided that I really like the outfit, and think it would be a good addition to my collection. I have seen several people (a few in here, too) that have put one of these together, and they look good.
Marching in the parade at D*C, I noticed the Stormtroopers (who could avoid them, eh?) and thought that it would be shiny to have several people in the "uniform" of the Independents. There was one woman that I saw that had a wonderful costume....if anyone knows who she is, please let me know!

Ok, to the meat...I am planning on putting together a complete outfit; buying what I can and building the rest. I would like to offer the patterns I find to whoever else would like to be part of this, but I will also offer to build what I can for those that want them. I'm trying not to create my own group or anything like that...just want to put my limited skills and overabundant enthusiasm to a good cause.

I went ahead and posted this thread because a few of us are already talking back and forth...I figured it would be nicer to keep this in one place rather then bother all heck out of everyone else.

So, anyone else out there interested?

Well, you already know I'm in, but I thought I would throw in my hat nonetheless.

I would be of the variety that would just get you to build whatever needed building and then buying the rest.

I think that we can give the 501st a real run for their money (maybe not this year, but one can hope), though we are going to need a good name ourownselves (I am partial to the Balls & Bayonetes Brigade ).

I suppose I have already said this, but I will re-iterate: let me know what I can do to help in this endeavor, as I am all for it.

I was planning on marching as a companion, though I could be persuaded to carry a , " I supported unification" sign or dressing the part of a browncoat :)

I bet if you got enough folks together you could get a discount on helmets etc.

Browncoats are the shiniest folks in the 'verse

I forgot to add, if we can get patterns for the alliance uniforms as well the purple bellies could be marching us browncoats outta serenity valley, we could have our own U-day reenactment.

Just a thought.

But I am very much in, there did not seem to be a true browncoat uniform other than brown was the overwhelmingly popular color. I think the costumes would be cheap and easy to make or even put together from thrift store finds.

My bro was the reaver last year.

RIMG, good to see you here, too! I really think the medic thing is a good idea. I have a few of those ice packs around here somewhere, as well as quite a bit of scrap leather for bags.

I'm going to try to spend a few minutes and get some screen caps posted here so y'all can see what I mean.

ArtCat, good to see you in here, too! I think you would make a wonderful Companion! I'll see about getting those signs made.
I had a chance to chat with your brother before the parade...his costume was great!

I realize there was a lot of diversity in the "uniform", but I have managed to see a few common items on the grunts...red vest with stitched-on brown lines (not sure exactly what those meant), brown overcoat (I am going to model my design after the one Mal had), pants (again, Mal's pattented 'tight pants'), and the main firearm was a H&K G36 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_&_Koch_G36)
The airsoft version of this can be found all over eBay.

I'll be back in a bit with pictures!

Alright, a few screencaps found at Still Flying and placed in photobucket. These give a pretty good idea of the general "costume". Several of the soldiers have what appears to be mail on their arms. I say appear because it does not flow right for steel mail...I don't think I'll incorporate this into the outfit, as I am way out of practice as far as making mail goes...

So, the photos:

Mal is NOT carrying a G36 here...I think this is some French assault rifle...

And a good shot of the main weapon. It looks like a carbine version of the G36.

Comments, additions...anyone know something I am missing? I know there are more photos of these out there...I'll be looking at the deleted scenes tonight. Does anyone know of a site out there with good, clear photos of these costumes?

Is there a particular helmet style you noticed on the Browncoats? I'm assuming that they were using steel helmets (Just because it's grittier). As cool as it would be for us to all have MICH TC-2000's, it'd be costly and probably detract from the "feel" of a Browncoat.

I'm guessing/voting for the good ol' M1 design. I have one in my room, although it's a little bit big on me.

Just as a suggestion, and something I'm doing myself ASAP, I think that between the visual companion, and possibly, the Serenity Role Playing Game handbook, we could probably get very organized and detailed descriptions on what we should be wearing, depending on who we're trying to represent.

I'll show up as a Browncoat if that's the idea everyone's going for, but if there's a large enough following behind the Alliance idea, well, I've never turned down an opportunity to be the bad guy.

I don't know a lot about the helmets...there's a good shot of the one Tracey had on...hang on...

To my eyes, that looks like a WWII-era helmet...but like I said, I do not know for sure. You have any idea what that is?

I think I'd like to stick with the Independents...although I think creating Alliance outfits would also be pretty shiny. No! No more sewing projects! I'd have to quit my real job!

I had forgotten the Visual Guide...I know there are some original drawings in those. Thank you!

I do think I would like to create the costumes of a brigade not yet torn up; newer-looking with just a hint of wear. Kind of like they may have been before it started going bad. Pretty coats, pretty vests, shiny equipment...as the years go by at D*C, we can age our look accordingly!

I believe thats knitted mail - literally a basic knit coated in stuff - paints, waxes and graphite/metallic powders. Its used mainly on stage and on screen when it wont be seen in any detail (they used it extensively for the background Uruk Hai in LOTR) I have instructions somewhere, i'll find and post them if you want.

I'd love to join in, i'll have to see - my main problem at the moment is packing (and, um, trying to get one of those guns through customs)

hence my trying to make costumes that take up only tiny amounts of space (it don't come more tiny that a greek chiton!)

but i'll keep checking in and see what happens.

Isn't sanity really a one trick pony, anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy...ooh hoo hoo hoo... the skys the limit!

Thank you, Seryn! Once again, you pop in and answer something I have been trying to figure out. No rush, but if you do find those instructions, I would be most appreciative if you could post them!
As far as the gun, I'm planning on buying a few of them anyway...they aren't that expensive. So, if you do decide to march as an Independent, I'll have the guns.

Although, I am looking forward to seeing that Greek chiton!

The US Military used the steel pot helmets (M1) with a liner until the mid 80's when they started using the kevlar German style helmets. The old helmets still can be found at many Army surplus stores, though I suggest just using the liner, unless you have a strong neck. The steel helmets are a bit weighty, that is one reason they switched to Kevlar.

The design remained pretty much the same from WWII to the 80s, except for a few minor modificatons.

The liner held the webbing that provided some cushioning for the helmet and helped keep it on the wearer's head.

History tidbit: the US Miltary used the same type of helmet as the British since WWI, the one that looked more like a brimmed hat, until the pot helmets were introduced in 1941. When the USA entered the war, about half of the US Army had the new M1 helmets, which offered more protection than the older ones.

I'm definitely voting for the steel. Mine only put me back $20, although it's smooth, and the one in the picture you posted appeared to be galvanized. But I'm almost sure I remember from the opening scene in the pilot episode showing at least one smooth steel helmet being worn. Also, the weight is not a problem. I don't know where the hell that assertion came from.

For the record, though, I've always been a fan of the M35 HEER and M40 Luftwaffe. If this thing ever grows, and people start making smaller, more personalized groups all over the country, I'm so gonna out-class everyone with German militaria.

As for the styles and such, I have no idea (the different names are lost on me), but I would also be willing to bring along a couple of extra guns as it is only a 100 mile drive for me. Other extra bulky equipment also, as I know that packing for a flight and then getting questionable things through customs can be tough.

Ok, so i was mostly right (Tristan if you can lay your hands on a book called Costumes & Chemistry by Sylvia Moss, you'd probably like it)

Its string, like soft parcel twine i should imagine, knitted fairly basically (though if anyone knows of a stitch that looks more mail like let us know!) then you rub graphite (the fine powder thats used as a lubricant I think for car parts) thoroughly into it and coat the whole thing with white glue (in the book its called Polyvinyl Acetate Coating - basically the stuff kids use to stick them selves to small scraps of tissue paper).

Then you can either dry brush with metallic paint or bronzing powder mixed with more glue or use metallic and matt spray paints roughly mixed together (like silver grey and balck applied with a dodgy spray head would give a great texture)

I can't help thinking rubbing wax over some bits and using a dry brush to apply a dull metallic paint would give a great pitted rusty texture as well.
An alternative method is to mix graphite and shellac and paint it on - it'll give you a dull shine of all one colour.

It also says to flatten and produce a more realistic appearence, after coatings are dry, take a hot iron and either rub or pound (!) it onto the string.

um - i'm thinking maybe applying the coatings with the knit stretched over a frame or hanging from clips will keep it flat enough so that you don't have to destroy an iron.

I hope that helps! I forgot to say as well, are you picking a god and joining us for one of the days? I kinda thought you'd make a good Haiphestos - being and armourer and all that, but i'm not sure if someones nabbed it already. (And Chris Moorhead - Ares is still up for grabs!)

It should be stressed that it is the 'C' variant of the H/K G36. The HKG36C is the compact commando variant and has a number of visible differences. All the images I've seen show this as the weapon in use.

The one Mals using looks a lot like some of the HK SMGs and Carbine Assualt Rifle Variants of the HK33. Something not unlike the HK53.

A M1 helment with liner weighs about 3 pounds. The liner weighs .7 pounds. If you are only wearing it for a short time, the weight is not so bad, but your neck and shoulders will be a might sore if you have to wear it all day.

Three pounds may not sound like much, but unless you have a neck like a football linebacker, your muscles are not used to supporting that weight.

From back in the navy, we used the 'textured' helmets. Considerably rougher than I would expect from galvinization, but maybe it was. I was told at the time that it was to help minimize it's shineyness (y'know, comoflage), and discourage anyone from trying to polish it (thus ruining the camoflage effect). I can attest that we never had to polish them, and they were quite thoroughly non-reflective.

Those Independents' vests reminded me of marching band vests. *snikker* I even tried looking for some in second-hand shops and the like; found similar styles but not in similar colours.

And, um, I make chainmaille, but I don't have anywhere near the time, money, or components to make costumes for a bunch of people.

But, hey! Count me (and a friend) in! Assuming I don't forget between now and then.

There's many HK SMG's and Carbine Assualt Rifles with similar styling. The gun Mal has in Du Kang seems to boxy to be an MP5 variant though.

Tom Clancy issued the H&K 10MM to Rainbow Six. I'd love to have a civilian version but would hate to buy ammo for the damn thing. There is one offered in .45ACP here in the US.

Just got in, gonna snoop around for medkit ideas, ideally I want one big enough to hold a dozen cold ones. I have also just been reminded of the chocolate chip cookies I brought this year, thinking of making them bandaids or painkillers, individually wrapped so I can just hand them out to people.

Here is the body of an e-mail I got from Reignphoria when he was suggesting things for me to throw together a Browncoat/Monty costume:

Shirt: Either a brown t-shirt with sleeves torn or a brown dress shirt with sleeves untampered. I have goth just incase,

Vest: A bit harder. If you can get a red vest that can work... unless you are willing to do a bit of sewing and hemming and the like. If so, a red sleeves t shirt works fine. Cut down the front and hem it up. Then you can attatch velcro, clips, d-rings, whatever you need. You could always make one form scratch too, which I plan to do at one stage :)

Undershirt: In Firefly, the undershirt is either a looseknit wool, for warmth, or a kind of fabric used for armour. This really is only useful if you go sleeveless for your brown shirt. If I use the full length dress shirt, I just wear a black undershirt or something more comfortable instead. I have sometimes even just done that with the sleeveless. It's all a matter of comfort and taste.

Suspenders: Not actually necessary if you keep your vest on. But if so, the BC ones are button ones that attatch to the buttons of the pants. Hard to find without crafting your own rigging on the pants. you can go on the cheap of course and just get clip ones.

Pants: Without making your own with suspender rigging, might be hard to find, epsecially with a black stripe. If you can find an old Nevada police uniform (or some kinds of highway patrols) they have the right colour with a black stripe. Otherwise you can buiy your own tan pants and sew a black stripe down the side, and sew buttons on for suspenders etc. (I did the last one)

Boots: not really a problem. Mid-calf or knee high boots. Preferably brown... but of course, it doesn't matter a great deal. I had black army type boots for a long time before I find some decent brown knee-highs.

Scarf: Depending on what campaign, apparently. Mal wears a blue scarf and Zoe wears a red scarf in Serenity Valley. Tracey, Mal and Zoey all wear red scarves in Du-Khang. Up to you. I have a blue bandana sort of scarf plus a big red one, just in case.

Belts and ammo packs etc: Look around :) A brown belt isn't hard to come by... a gun holster should be too hard in America... a lot of this stuff was hard for me to find coming from New Zealand and all.

That should do it for a basic BC uniform. Experiment with it, of course. Have fun :)

It's an HK UMP, no doubt. The magazine's too small to handle the 5.56 mm of an HK33, which even the smaller carbine versions take. The MP5 was a closer guess, but the stock, sight and muzzle give it away. These were the finest weapons I ever trained with (although I only ever used the UMP45 variant), and I'd take one over a full sized assault rifle of just about any type.

Seryn - Eh, if I did anyone, it'd be Odin. One eyed warrior gods are so my thing. Unless you're doing specifically Greek? If that's the case, you can count me out. Norse mythology pwns Greek.

Hera7 - Current K-pots in the military weigh between 3.1 and 4.2 pounds. My only point was that the change from the M1 had nothing to do with weight and everything to do with ballistic protection.

That said, I suppose it could start to cramp up certain people's necks. I wore a Kevlar for so long, I can't even remember if I ever got neck pains from it.

As it has only been one day, I have not accomplished too much. I'm still trying to get caught up on my other sewing projects, but the ideas are flowing. That list RIMG posted is a good guidline...the only thing I want to add to it would be the cloth overcoat. I'll get to working on that over the holidays.

If needed I can supply about 20 reaver costumes, not nearly as nice as my bros but with a little fake blood they look pretty scary. I know not really what folks are going for here, buuutI could mail them up to someone prior to that weekend if need be, they were used for a serenity LARP at the LoneStar Shindig.
A quick trip to the local dollar store can supply an army with crappy weapons :)

On the balls and bayonets brigade ( i love that name by the way) definately check your local army surplus, they rock and often you can buy the ww2 suspenders and even pants.

20 Reavers...oh, mercy! You want to see grown men reduced to running rabbits, is that it?!?

I do want to try to have a common carry weapon, which is why I am aiming for the G36 C's (thanks, Citizen!). The good-looking Airsoft versions are all over ebay for reasonable prices. I plan on picking a few of them up, so I will have extra firearms for those that don't have them, especially our brethren and sistren from across the pond (s).
As far as the pants, the ones I have are from Wild West Mercantile, and are a very close match to the Captain's...and he and Zoe both wore that kind of pants during the war. I would guess just about anything khaki-looking would work, but for those interested, I'll post the link...

I'd think a basic reverse stocking stitch would look kind of mail-like.

RIMG, I found an old Army backpack of mine yesterday...meant to take some pictures of it. I thought it might make a good model for a med kit. It's about the size of a backpack, but goes across the body; hangs at about waist-level. I guess describing it is not going to help much...I'll get pics of it up tonight.

I might be able to learn a smiple stitch - I was always pretty hopeless at things to do with string... or wool... but I managed a couple of scarves last year and made a (terrible) hat once... so it might be time to try again... I think I could get chain mail through customs...

I will look for them when I can, but at this point it will most likely be Sunday before I see them (after fed job today I will not be around until then).

I got ingredients for the Irish Red yesterday, probably going to brew it Sunday or Monday, so it should be ready in early to mid January. Gonna start the first D*C beer trial when the Red gets close to bottling.

Since I've done a Zoe costume and next year will have a proper vest in real leather (thanks Tristan) I had toyed with the idea of doing a Zoe soldier costume but space and guns through airlines does pose an issue. Mostly the space as the guns can be mailed to a fellow Browncoat who's driving. Hmmmmm, only 282 costuming days to D*C...

BrownCoat1, I am planning on making a cloth browncoat and the red vests they wore underneath. I am going to try to make them as inexpensively as possible...which should not be too difficult. I'll probably use a modified trenchcoat pattern, so they won't take that much cloth.

As far as getting the G36 locally, would you mind me asking how much? I may see about getting one through you if they aren't that bad.

no directions on this site but the knitted fake chainmail looks pretty convincing to me, I am not the best knitter by a long shot, but thought our better knitters might be able to puzzle out construction method because I can follor directions.

..I'll be at Dragon*Con '07; would like to be part of the parade brigade. Shepler's latest Xmas catalog has men's trousers that are of that tweedy-brownish-tanish color that appear to be a close match; just needing the stripe down the side. The wwmerc red vests appear close, too; with the exception of the collar.

eh knitting patches won't take too horribly long, even "full shirts" would not be too horrid, most folks would be wearing coats over it so really only fronts would have to be made :)

As far as uniformity, the browncoats seem to be a real hodge podge, I think as long as we all have oh say the browncoat patch on our shoulder and the predominantly brown coloring theme I think we will be good :)

I cannot wait to get the materials and tackle this knitting project!

Whee! FFG, ready and able! Um...after the holidays, that is!

ArtCat, my vision has the soldiers at least a little "uniform"...at least close in pants and shirts, but with similar vests and overcoats and weapons. As the war progressed, they seem to have become very hodge-podge...I was aiming for a relatively new 'brigade'...haven't really had their edges dulled to far yet. Although, if the general concensus ends up being different, I have no problems with that, either! Just having a contingent of Independent soldiers marching will fill my heart with joy!

Ebay has a platoon load of H&K G36s paintball guns relatively cheap, even sets of 2 for "Independent" Browncoat couple. They don't look exactly like the one Zoe carries but close.
