Exactly this situation with electronics, for a company, not an individual, was covered in the comics:

The first thing hubby would do is look at how your PC was physically put together. Dust is the most common cause of heat buildup, but "bad build" is the #1 root problem. When we put PCs together (dear daughter and I do the assembly, he supervises!) he is EXTREMELY careful to pick cases that breathe, breathe, breathe; total air exchange once per second. So typically, there are at least five fans in each case. He is also EXTREMELY careful how to route all of that internal wiring... ties the wires together well up and out of the way so that internal airflow is not impeded. Not only must the CPU be well-ventilated, but also the northbridge, southbridge, and hard drives."Hot spots" can get up to 200-300 F.

We had two Dells in the lab that "came with" instruments (instrument manufacturer's choice) and when I told him about them he just kind of rolled his eyes and commented that they would probably die in a year because Dell at the time was stuffing everything into teeny-tiny cases, with the hard drive in a corner somewhere with no air circulation. Sure enough, within a year one failed, and the other failed one month later (hard drive failures).

You really need that paste.

Oh, also 14C is not realistic.

EDITED TO ADD Hubby says don't rely on the internal thermometer. They're highly non-linear. Also, what temp was that? The CPU core temp? Or the CPU die temp? 14C is a ridiculous reading, you might get that right after startup but if that's what you're reading when you're running forget it: Your thermosensor is dead. Use your "digital thermometer" (your finger). Touch the heat sink near its base ... if it's uncomfortably hot to leave you finger on, it's too hot.

It's a great case by Lian Li. It's oversized, all metal with machined screws. Not a single plastic part in it aside from some electronics stuff for your Power/Reset buttons and leds and the like. A platter can be removed to easily do almost the entire install outside the case. I've had this case for 2 builds now, and will be using it again for a 3rd one down the road (hopefully later than sooner).

Truth be told, I didn't do a great job making sure this thing would run cool. I was really cheap about the whole thing and I was working that really bad job at the time. I'm honestly surprised it's given me as little trouble as it has until now.

At this point, I can't even successfully boot into the OS anymore. Every time I've tried it freezes before it makes it to that point. I'm a little concerned now about this since I didn't change anything. All I did was evict the family of wookies that had taken up residence in the case and reseat the GPU and memory.

I'm done messing with it for today. I ordered some thermal paste and a power stripe and a new PSU that'll come sometime this week. Hopefully I can save the thing then. I think at this point I'm only risking further damage by fiddling around with it with a highly suspect PSU involved.

Weather calling for rain up here by next weekend. We shall see.

Still a lot of smoke in the air around here so even though the temps are supposed to be high it is cool.

I went to the Canadian version of an active fire mapping website and found there were over 1,000 fires burning in BC - though I didn't drill down to size or total acres. I hope you all get a nice deep drink of rain.

Finally got off work.

On the agenda this week:

1. Put the final touches on a project I've been working on for my brother on and off in my free time for over a year.

2. Fix my computer (hopefully).

3. Install new brake pads and rotors on the car.

4. Replace fuel line for gas weed wacker my step-dad gave me when they moved. (He said it worked great for one season, but he left gas in it and now it won't start).

Assuming I get that massive to-do list out of the way and I'm feeling super productive, I've also got a backpack-style leaf blower he gave me that isn't working that I'd like to tinker around with. I've already got a good leaf blower though, but my crappy electric weed wacker broke last year, so that's on the bottom of the list.

Would be awesome getting that thing to work again before fall though. Even though mine works great and is super powerful, it still takes me about 3-4 hours to do my yard and I get minor "tennis elbows" from carrying the minor weight the whole time.

Don't imagine I'm going to be saving any more money the rest of the year with taxes and my car insurance coming up along with my teeth and all these other expenses, but I've made my peace with that. After driving to work and back all week with the new tires and windshield that doesn't leak a drop of water inside when it rains and not having to fill the oil anymore I can tell that my stress levels have gone down dramatically.

A few steps closer to living that stress free life I've always dreamed about.

You can't put a price on that.

EDIT: Oh yeah... almost forgot. When I get the weed wacker working I can take care of all of the weeds and my place won't look like hillbilly trash lives here anymore. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I do not doubt that at all Kiki. There is still so much smoke in the air that the sun was orange this morning when I first saw it.

The Interior of the province sure can use it.

Hey, you should come over here, you'd feel better!

Between trying to line up all the health insurance after hubby's retirement, cooking, shopping, taking care of dear daughter and lining up contractors for window replacement and other renovations, walking the dog (and hour a day) and otherwise taking care of her, getting all the broken household shit fixed and minding hubby's and my health and helping him out with his projects ... the yardwork has dropped down into Xth place.

On the bright side, I did learn that there's a natural sequence to these things ... first water, THEN weed. After than, prune, trim, mow, and/or edge. After THAT, rake. And after THAT, sweep. (I have a leaf-blower that I refuse to use.) Not all in one day, of course!!

But then, that's if I have time. Which lately I haven't, so the weeds and grass (the little I have left in the backyard) have been growing and leaves have been piling up, and sooner or later I KNOW I have to get to them.... just not now!

And, the water-heater has kept working so I guess it's just a keypad thing. so YAY! for that fix, anyway!

BC wildfires prompted unprecedented second state of emergency, Horgan says

On Tuesday evening, all of B.C. was facing moderate to very high health risks from the poor air quality, according to Environment Canada. Wednesday is expected to bring high health risks to most of the province, including Victoria, Kamloops, Prince George and Vancouver. The situation isnt expected to improve until at least Thursday, when rain showers are forecast to arrive.

Wildfire smoke continues to choke Western Canada

"I think for a lot of people, they are feeling kind of gloomy about it because it feels as though our summer has come to such an incredibly abrupt end," said Christa Mullaly, executive director of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Kamloops, B.C.

In some cities, like Prince George, street lamps remained lit hours after sunrise because of how dark the streets were under the layer of heavy smoke.

Keeping to a regular routine, continuing to exercise — but indoors — and spending time with friends can help, she told Shelley Joyce, the host of CBC's Daybreak Kamloops.
Smaller fires also erupted in urban parts of B.C. on Monday. One broke out in the afternoon near the West Vancouver waterfront, while another brought firefighters to an area near a university campus in Abbotsford a few hours later.

"The contradiction right now is that we are being told to stay indoors and part of what that creates for folks is social isolation," Mullaly said.
In Prince George, B.C., which was listed as a moderate risk, city councilor Garth Frizzell said residents were really hopeful that forecasts showing rain arriving later this week would be borne out, allowing the air to clear.

"If people can get out of their houses and get to a place indoors with other folks, that helps to improve our mood certainly."

"On a serious note, there are a lot of people who are triggered by the smoke. If people are feeling as though this isn't just, 'oh, I'm having a grumpy day,' they need to reach out for help," she emphasized.

It seems the smoke is depressing a lot of people. I know it depresses me!

I noticed something about my backyard (aside from a leftover rat muzzle and gut-sack that a hungry predator left behind!) ... there are ALWAYS butterflies there, sometimes three or four. A lot of monarchs ... I wonder if I'm seeing part of their normal migration (along the coastal route) ... but also skippers, painted ladies, cabbage (white) and sulfur (yellow) butterflies, either "blues" or "hairstreaks" (They never stay still long enough for me to ID!), swallowtails, and others that I can't ID. I don't know if my backyard is different from other backyards in my neighborhood; maybe EVERY backyard has a lot of butterflies. But they sure are pretty and I'm glad they're here!

*****

Also, I came up with a "good for you" recipe for oatmeal cookies, for hubby (who is diabetic) ... something he can grab on his way out in the AM or for snack in the afternoon. As soon as this latest batch comes out of the oven, if it turns out OK I'll post the recipe.

The smoke hasn't done much for my state of mind either.

Went to play mahjong today and got spat on at the bus stop. Also managed to hear some radio weather. There was actual rain here today most likely Burnaby, Vancouver and the like. Also some ocean breezes they said. Air advisories are still out but more rain heading in.
Suppose to rain tonight and into Friday and I do hope so.

Vancouver has a lot of green spaces and sometimes wild fires have been known to start in Stanley Park.

Yeah... I was looking at that list and it seemed a little ambitious after I made it.

I actually did all of it so far except for the weed wacker and the weeds though. :)

I might try out JSF's sea foam suggestion first on that one, then dump the rest of the bottle in my car for good measure.

In the process of a deep clean of my house. I found a whole bunch of clothes I forgot I had after I'd packed them away when I got fat. Got a whole bunch more shirts for work now. :)

I finally set up an appointment about my teeth. That call didn't go the way I'd hoped though. It's possible that I've lost too much bone for the dentures. I didn't think that that was a thing. Implants weren't even around before I was born. What did people do back then?

Going to get a new scan done to see how bad the damage is at this point, and then I'm going to have to go see a doctor to have some tests done. They're pretty convinced that I've got diabetes or something worse to cause that amount of bone loss at my age. I told them I was a drunk for years with a crap diet, no vitamin intake and very little sunlight.

They can't diagnose me over the phone, so I just got to go through the motions now and hope for the best.

They are right that they can't diagnose you over the phone and I think getting these tests done is a good thing. It will help with your over all improvement if you know how your health is. With the results in hand you can get going on your dental work and if you are diabetic it is better to know now and start treating while you are young. You don't also want to loose the use of your kidneys or worsen your eyesight. It can and will do both of those things.

I'm 99% positive it's not diabetes.

That diagnosis would actually explain some other issues I've had for a few years, but there is zero history of it in my family and I just got my most recent eye exam back in November and they told me I didn't have it. I don't know if that's a hundred percent when the eye doctor says it, but supposedly the eye doctors are the ones who find it early.

I'm actually more concerned of finding out I have something worse. My plan was never to see a doctor for the rest of my life and just hope for the best now that I'm living healthy. Can't very well do that if it means I'm going to be unable to talk in public and have to eat baby food for the rest of my life once these teeth really start falling out.

It could just be continuing lack of vitamin C and/or D that did it. If they don't find anything definitive (like a bone infection) just chalk it up to a one-time thing which has since been fixed.

I don't know what they would recommend for the next steps forward for you. But just to give you an idea of possibilities, I knew a lady at work who had really bad teeth, gums and underlying bone (bone infection from gum disease which had spread downward). What they suggested, and what was ultimately done, was to scrape out the bad bone and flood her system with antibiotics, then encourage gone growth by implanting bone dust and growth factor. I didn't follow all of the ins and outs, but I know it was a multi-month procedure with many setbacks (recurring infection requiring more removal) and slow jaw replacement, but both she and her doctors kept at it, and ultimately she was able to get several implants which allowed them to place bridges, and despite such a discouraging process it all worked out wonderfully in the end. Also, it pays to get multiple opinions (see below!)

*****

On THIS end, I got a second opinion about my sinus surgery and the recurring infections that I kept on having. After surgery I got pretty slapdash care (I thought) despite the fact that I had contacted surgeon about infection symptoms and got no response. Coincidentally had an appt with allergist, and SHE scoped my sinuses and dx'd an infection and rx'd an antibiotic. So I told surgeon, he look at my nose, said "keep on keeping on, and see me in a month". A month goes by, I STILL have infection symptoms. and all he said was "Keep in doing the rinses and see me in a month". Fortunately by then I had made an appointment with another ENT surgeon the following day, she scoped my sinuses, found that I still (or again) had an infection, took a long Qtip and swabbed an impressive amount of goop from one of my sinuses for culture. I just got the results today... I have TWO bacteria infecting my sinuses, one of which is resistant to what I'd been given. So needless to say, my surgeon is now my FORMER surgeon, and I have transferred my care to the new ENT surgeon.

Second opinions... it never hurts to get one!

*****

I ID'd one of the flutterbys that never opened its wings for me until today; it's the common buckeye but despite the name there's nothing common about it! What a pretty butterfly!

Also, in addition to the usual honeybees I ID'd a fuzzy white/black striped bee with very shiny wings as a leafcutter bee; a "tireless gentle pollinator"

What they're all homing in on is a weed/ lawn replacement called "lippia"

It showed up in my (small) lawn about five years ago from who-knows-where; my then-gardener wanted to pull it out but when I saw how much the little pollinators LOVED the flowers I told him to leave it in. It's in a verbena family, members of which are powerfully attractive to bees, moths, and butterflies. As long as you don't mind watching where you step (there are often a couple-dozen bees on the flowers) it makes a decent lawn substitute. I also have volunteer verbena bonariensis

in the garden; I also don't know where it came from but that's another pollinator-attractor. Unlike lippia, v. bonariensis is listed as an invasive species in CA. But since it's contained in my (walled) backyard, and it's so pretty and attracts so many butterflies I'll leave it where it is.

The only reason it hurts me to get a second opinion is that I don't have any insurance. The cheap option is my only option, and it sounds like maybe that won't be an option now.

I'm just not going to do anything about it if it isn't a cheap and easy fix.

Is it too late to sign up for dental insurance?

I think the CT scan is a good idea, so I hope you have it done: if it turns out of be an ongoing problem then it needs to be treated, and if not then you can sigh a sigh of relief and continue to do your best to live a healthy life.

Eye doctors check for diabetes up here too. Yes, they can find it in your eyes as I said it can affect your eyes.

You're right to be worried. But if it is something important that can be dealt with better that you know. Few people get away with out a doctor's visit.

If you mean through work, I can't because that's only for full timers. Part timers don't get health insurance. I know there are dental plans out there that you can sign up for independently, but they only cover a max of a few grand, which wouldn't help me at all. Even if I was able to get coverage through work it would be the same story.

No matter what happens in my mouth, insurance companies view dental work as "cosmetic". Even if I'm officially told when it's all said and done that I cannot get dentures because the bone loss is too severe, there will be no assistance in paying for it.

If it comes to that point, I think you could expect to see me on the news. This literally will be the hill I choose to die on, and I will bring awareness to the country about how wrong that all is.

Short of getting dentures, I will not pay for anything to be done, and it will kill me. I think it would be a shame not to at least make that mean something for other people who have to go through this and are afraid to die so they'll go into lifelong debt to do whatever it takes.

EDITED TO ADD: Upon re-reading that, I realized that it could be perceived as a bit threatening. I just want to clear that up and say that I have no intention of "making the news" by hurting anybody over this.

Maybe I'll start a YouTube channel and just show the world the state of my teeth and bring awareness to the fact that health issues as severe as this are evaded by insurance companies simply because they're taking place in your mouth, even though the other potential health risks by letting this go are extreme.

I'll chronicle my own slow death and the decay of the quality of my life for everybody to see, just to make a point.

I'm ready to meet my maker.... or find out there isn't one.

SIX, how do you feel about a three-month round of antibiotics, or a year of high-dose vitamin D and calcium? ? I guess what I'm saying is ... a bone infection or bone thinning is not a "cosmetic" problem, it's a medical one. Even if you can't get dentures or implants, if there's something going on with your bones that's only going to get worse and worse, you might want to think about medical treatment.

I'm sorry to say that the last three people who worked for me all had terrible/ missing teeth, and nobody (certainly not "society") gave a shit. I don't know about where you live, but here you'd be just one of a million. Literally.

I seriously doubt that. If I'm being told that it's going to be impossible to put me into dentures because of the extreme amount of bone loss it would be more like one in a million than one of a million.

My bones are fine. I do an extreme amount of work, and I'm always banging things on this and that, and even sometimes running my foot over with a pallet jack.

I'm not paying for any work, so if that is the case then I'm on my way to sipping my food through a straw and talking without any teeth. I will be looking for options for assisted suicide at that point, just so there's no mess to clean up.

Anyway, I don't know if you're eligible for Medicare, or if you have a philosophical objection to it. But a bone infection in your jaw might be covered. https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coverage/MedicareDentalCoverage/index.htm

Thanks for the link. My state doesn't do medicare for people at my income level, although they do have a program that's considered somewhat of an extention of it for low income earners who aren't medicare eligible.

Assuming that this would be the same thing, I suppose I would just have to wait until it got serious enough that I would be hospitalized for it according to that link.

Yay.

I'll do some research and see if that's possible. I'll just have to let it get to the point that it's nearly killing me and then I can get some work done that would cost taxpayers infinitely more than taking care of the problem now.

Sounds about as reasonable as anything else our government does from day to day.

Doctor kind of danced around that one. In fact, I had to ask very bluntly Say doctor, what are the names of the bacteria in my sinuses? and it seemed kind of rude at that point to follow up with So, which one is resistant, and what's it resistant to? since she didn't exactly freely divulge to begin with.

From the inet, BOTH of the bacteria (Psuedomonas and S aureus) are sometimes treated with penicillin-class drugs (PA with penicillin and SA with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid) and since I've had multiple rounds of amox-clav that doesn't clear up for me which is resistant to what. In any case, I'm going to be taking levaquin (no lifting heavy weight for me, now!) and rinsing my sinuses with hypertonic saline/gentamicin/steroid "special sauce" that I mix up at home.

I was just going to ask about that. I hope the rain is helping to put out those fires!

It's interesting BRENDA, you speak so often about the rain (and the snow) that you obviously hate it. But I guess you're not the only one, since that article that I posted made it very clear that a LOT of people there find eternal gloom to be pretty depressing, and that one of the biggest impacts of the fire was the smoke, because the smoke blotted out one of the few times that you might actually see some sunshine. Is that about right?

I had a woman from Finland working for me - I may have mentioned her before - but when she got a fantastic opportunity back in Finland she left with obvious regret. The impression that I got was that she hated leaving sunny Santa Monica for dark, cold, depressing winters. I grew up in an area that had a lot of winter weather ... not the bright sparkly kind but endless days of cloudy gloom ... I thought it was OK back then! I wonder how I would fare if i had to move back!

I hope so too. The grass will green up down here with this rain and clear out the rest of the smoke. But as I have said before the Interior of the province with the fires needs it more.

That is correct Sig. Summer is the main time that we get a good amount of sun and with all that smoke, it just blotted it out. It was very dark and gloomy all day.

At least when we get snow it is generally brighter because of it. I only hate the snow because of where I am living makes it difficult to get around. The rain brings nothing but clouds and grey.

For that lady it would have been regret. I couldn't live in the Arctic with 6 months of dark and that was what she was facing going home.

Speaking of smoke and gloom ... and one's normal weather ... here in SoCal we get pretty relentless sun. And it was phenomenally, blazingly hot for a few months with the sun just beating down on everything. So when the Holy fire got going, and the sun was obscured for three days and the smoke cover actually dropped the temperature, it was in some ways a relief.

Nothing to do with that except cooking ... I really like to share tastes of food and recipes with people at work. Maybe I'm recipe-challenged, but most times I can get a recipe but just not imagine how it's supposed to taste. So it's good to be able to share the actual dishes. Things are often FAR better in real life than I think they'll be. For example - I can't believe how many YEARS late I was in discovering the heavenly tastes of mashed and riced cauliflower.

You'd think that would be a natural thing for people to get together over - that there would be clubs, groups, gatherings of people with a mutual interest in home cooking. But no. At least, not around here. There are hiking clubs and gardening clubs and book club and foodie let's-go-to-restaurant clubs and wine tasting clubs and beer brewing clubs and horse riding clubs --- but no home cooking clubs. Though there are plenty of people offering to take chunks of your money to 'teach' you how to cook.

Is there any such thing up where you live Brenda? Groups of people who get together to share food and recipes? Am I just in the wrong subculture? Or does this seem like a weird idea that nobody in their right mind would be interested in pursuing?

I think that idea is too much of a throwback to the days when women stayed at home and did all the cooking.

I've actually never dated a woman in my life that knew how to cook. A few of their brothers were excellent cooks, but none of them were. Come to think of it, the youngest woman I know that enjoys cooking and is great at it is my step mom who's only 9 years older than I am.

I don't think this is really a gendered thing at this point. Everybody my age and younger pretty much wants instant gratification everywhere they turn. Unless somebody REALLY enjoys cooking and it is their profession or their hobby, I don't think anybody devotes any time to it anymore.

The only reason that I do it is because I had to change my diet for health issues and I couldn't live off of the processed junk anymore. I keep saying that with all my free time I'm going to learn how to cook a few things I'd really love to eat, but I can think of at least 100 things off the top of my head that I'd rather be doing than standing in front of the stove.

All that being said, you could probably find groups online for cooking enthusiasts. Maybe there'd even be enough locally by you to meet face to face instead of trading recipes over the internet.

Oh... btw... amidst all of my health drama I think I glossed over what the fix to my computer was.

Turned out all I needed was a new power supply to it. Since this one was actually designed for the board I have and not an older one that technically worked but wasn't designed for it, it's running better than it ever has before now. This PSU has a 24 pin and 8 pin connector for the board, where both of the old ones that got jacked up were relics that only had 20 pins and 4 pins.

So with the cost of the PSU, thermal paste, canned air and a new set of surge protectors, after I get the rebate on the PSU it will have all cost me $50 to have a computer that works even better than it had the first 5 years I owned it. That's a hell of a lot better than paying $700-$800 to put together a new one, even though it would be sweet to have the newest ram and finally have my OS load up instantly on a SSD. This one is way more than enough for my needs at the moment though. I really don't know what I'm missing.

"All that being said, you could probably find groups online for cooking enthusiasts. Maybe there'd even be enough locally by you to meet face to face instead of trading recipes over the internet." Been there. Done that. Sigh. To no avail.

My health is also what got me started cooking. Have I mentioned that for my entire life I have had almost no sense of smell? So I used to make very indifferent - but nutritious! - pots of soup that would sit in the frig while I scrounged everything but. It took me over a year to realize that as little a sense of smell that I have, some food still tastes better and some food still tastes worse TO ME. And that if I was going to eat nutritious food, it would have to be something that tastes good TO ME. That's when I decided I needed to learn how to cook. And I can proudly say I'm now a good home cook! And even better, OTHER people like my cooking as well!

And ...

CONGRATS! on the computer fix!

Oh, I hate cooking. And I'm the family cook! And since I lost my sense of smell (since at least last Thanksgiving; before that I had an EXCEPTIONAL sense of smell) cooking decent meals has become very difficult. Is this food spoiled, or safe? Is this too much seasoning, or not enough?

The only reason why I even bother is because of hubby... he has such a list of aches, pains, and disabilities that it's hard for him to enjoy anything anymore. Plus, he has diabetes, so it's not like he can just eat fancy food whenever he wants. So the challenge is to make food that fits into a diabetic lifestyle (lower carb) AND that tastes good. I've cooked everything from Japanese to Argentinian to German to Italian to Indian. I think he should be able to at least look forward to breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The challenge is that he and dear daughter are somewhat picky eaters; it's just that they're picky about different things!

But. Did I mention that I hate cooking? It's truly a labor of love.

******

Awake at stupid o'clock because of aches and pains. I've been trying to keep the yard at least somewhat presentable, and have been digging/spraying weeds and pulling dead plants and digging up the landscape cloth that one of my previous gardeners convinced me would be a great idea. Yesterday I finally got around string-trimming the back lawn (I don't have enough of a lawn to warrant a lawn mover), raking up piles of avocado leaves (They are seasonally confused! They usually lose their leaves in the spring, but this year they got so much mite damage that when I rescued the trees with successive hosing, spraying, and biological control; and drenching the roots, the trees went Oh hey! It's safe to make leaves again! so they're dropping most of the set fruit and most of the damaged leaves and replacing them with nice healthy shiny new leaves.), and sweeping up. It was a marathon (for me) gardening event. The backyard looks much better, but I'm stiff and sore. Not in a good way; more like in an old-lady kind of way. I hestitate to take ibuprofen because it REALLY interferes with my kidneys, and hesistated to take even aspirin because of some interaction with levaquin, But the cahes and pains go too much, so I looked it up and decide What the hell, I need my sleep Right now, I'm waiting for the aspirin to take effect.

But, I do have to say .. the yard REALLY does look better.

Thanks! :)

Anybody here have any experience with Coconut Oil? Either just cooking or for other uses?

My old man was talking to somebody he knows that has some chronic health issues and was mentioning my teeth problems. He swears by "Oil Pulling", which is a process that involves swishing coconut oil in the mouth between 10 and 20 minutes per day.

It seems relatively cheap, although a bit more expensive than the canola oil. I figured I might give it a try and even cook with it on occasion.

I love to cook and bake. I had to take up the cooking chores after my dad died as he was the family cook. My mom was a terrible cook and baker.

I still like to cook and bake though with my food sensitivities and such, at times it becomes more of chore than a pleasure.

But with my blood sugar problem I have to keep everything on an even keel.

I've read about oil pulling but have no information or experience either way. Coconut oil is said to have special antiviral and antibacterial properties, but unfortunately, I can't say anything about it from personal experience, one way or the other. It seems like it would be a cheap thing to try ... my questions would be how long do you give it and how can you tell if it's working?

But speaking of your poor mouth - at what point will you consider it a crisis that NEEDS to be addressed? I was thinking about that CT scan. What can it tell you? Can it be used to diagnose an ongoing infection (which is serious in my book)? I think it would be in your best interests to schedule whatever tests there are that could tell you if you have a bone infection, and just shell out the bucks. If no, then you can be reassured. If yes, then sign up for government assistance and get it taken care of.

Turned out all I needed was a new power supply to it.

Have you looked into that Raspberry Computer, or The Slice?

Have you tried Boost before? I have to expect you could have done without aspirin, and Boost would have not only taken care of the aches, but would make you feel strong and wonderful the next day.
My only problem is forgetting to take it. I have less exercise than before, so take it less, and then when I really should, it slips my mind because I'm out of the habit.

It's a crisis right now, but I won't get any government assistance for it. Unless (or until) whatever is happening in there is going to put me in the hospital, there will be no assistance.

Ideally, I will have all the teeth ripped out and dentures put in and be done with it. I'm hearing now that this might not be possible because the bone loss was already too severe. I'm not paying for anything out of pocket other than the $1,300 - $1,600 I was told it was going to cost to remove my teeth and get the dentures done, so if that's not an option I'm just going to live with it until it puts me into the hospital. At that point, hopefully I survive it and the government will have to pay 10 or 20 times what it would have cost to do something about it now.

The CT scan will show the infections. Actually, about 3-4 years ago when I did it, I was a guinea pig for their new machine. The guy who sold it to them saw the state of what lied beneath my gums and said that I probably feel run down all the time because my body is fighting off infections 24/7.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case now.

But congress deemed anything in the mouth as only cosmetic work back in 1980, so until it becomes life threatening in some other way (absesses, heart problems, sinus cavities caving in) I would have to pay for all of it myself, which I'm not going to do, so this is quite a puzzle.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I've got a raspberry. It's great for retro gaming, but it's not much as far as a real computer goes. My computer was built 5 years ago, but it's got a quad core AMD processor with 16GB of DDR3 memory. It was a great rig when I built it and is still way more than I need today since I don't do any PC gaming. It's way better than a $60 raspberry, in any case. Really, the only upgrade I'd think about doing to it at the moment now that it's in working order again is to replace my main drive with a SSD that would make it run even quicker.

Not sure about the slice. I've never heard of that one before.

I don't have quite the dietary considerations that you do, but I need to avoid gluten, sodium, and too many carbs. And then, well, I hate vegetables but I know I SHOULD eat them. So I try to fit 8oz of vegetables (about 225g) raw weight into every portion.

Given all that, I think my food is tasty! I make a mean shrimp fried rice with toasted riced cauliflower instead of rice, and a great chicken curry also using cauliflower 'rice'. I make palak paneer; a zippy beef, pepper and chili stew; a hearty seafood-tomato soup; pork, cabbage and potato stew; and ... too many other dishes to mention.

But I know there's other recipes out there! I think I have a lot to bring to the table (literally) in a recipe exchange, and I would love to learn new things from others!

The Raspberry I have (Zero) is only $5, but good luck getting one for that price. My brother actually managed to snag five of them for around $6 after shipping, and to the credit of the seller they honored that price without bitching but immediately changed it after the purchase. It's touted as "The Five Dollar Computer", but you can't buy it directly from the manufacturer. Resellers jack the price up and usually charge up to $20 more for shipping.

It's only a single core processor with 512mb of memory. It's got some pretty cool uses, but it's no substitute for a real computer.

I did a little research mid-post here and it seems that the price of the newest model has come down quite a bit and the manufacturer has put a lot more of them in a lot more hands. It looks like you can even buy it online through Target these days, which is making it a lot cheaper considering places like that offer free shipping. The last time I even looked into a Pi 3 was probably over a year ago and I couldn't even find one for under $55 with shipping.

Even still, you actually need to buy quite a few "extras" to do anything with it. Prices for all of that have come down as well now and you can get pretty good starter packs with a 32GB card included for under $40.

Good to see they're finally making enough of them that the pirates and scalpers will have a harder time ripping people off.

M3.4 earthquake about 2 miles from my house ~19:37.
Oddly, the earth is still gently rocking a bit - just enough to feel like mild vertigo.

updated M4.4 initial quake 34.140°N 117.773°W 6.1 km depth
a 3.4aftershock 2 minutes later 34.133°N 117.770°W 4.3 km depth
and a 2.4 aftershock 2 minutes after that 34.135°N 117.772°W 4.9 km depth

the rocking lasted roughly 15 minutes

I know gluten is a tough one Kiki. Carbs are also hard on someone has low blood sugar like me. Carbs turn into sugar as soon as your body starts digesting them. I eat a certain amount of carbs a day. I don't count but just watch what I am eating.

Sodium is another one that is rough on people. I watch that too.

I'm suppose to eat 4 of 5 small meals a day. I don't totally do that. But I have breakfast, take my meds, eat a snack when I get to a local mall, do my errands, eat lunch and if I am playing mah jong that afternoon make sure that I have a granola bar on me to eat while I am playing, get something to have for supper. Then I am usually good until around 9:30pm to take my second round of seizure meds and a couple of hours after that a snack for over night.

I'm not a fancy cook but I think I produce good meals for myself and my guy and my mom both liked my cooking. I do a riff on a Paella but instead of seafood and sausage, though I have made it with sausage, I use chicken and broccoli along with the rice. Chicken stock, salt, pepper, garlic and bay leaf. Very tasty.

Can't really make fruit pies anymore but the cupcakes I make have no eggs in them or milk. With dark chocolate. Yummy! Have to make another batch for my birthday in a month.

THUGGER admits it's not about RUSSIA !!! and is, in fact, a witch hunt. "Trump better be innocent of any wrong doing, anywhere, anytime."

Do you take cinnamon? Does it not regulate your blood sugar?

I have survived for several decades making batches of my favorite dishes to take to work, usually making enough to last a couple weeks at a rate of one every 1-3 days. My spaghetti and my goulash (like beef tomato sauce macaroni) have not only Fed me, but they continue to be my favorite dishes, even in smaller batches.

For sodium, are you referring to salt, or something else?

Rumor has it the title of this thread references rain.
Today we had some weather, converting extremely muggy to submerged cars in the parking lot, recording 5.5 inches in a few hours. In my house, my A/C pulled 4 1/2 gallons of DHMO from the house air in 16 hours. I'm only using a 5 gallon bucket to collect.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

What extras are needed? I usually get mice, keyboards, hard drives for a couple bucks.

The sky is the limit, really. It all depends on what you want to do with it. It doesn't have any sort of hard drive, and it operates on an SD card. I think for most applications you'd need at least a 16GB one, which is pretty dirt cheap these days. I'm not sure where it maxes out, but I'm currently using a 32GB one on my Pi Zero. It could probably take up to 512, but I would never spend that much money. For your buck, you'd be best off using a 32GB card as the main source for your OS and programs, then get a 4TB external for a hundred bucks if you needed extra storage.

The Pi 3B+ comes with wi-fi and bluetooth, which is nice, since the Pi Zero doesn't and you have to have dongles for them separately. You might also want to buy a USB hub for additional ports. The PI Zero only had one, so it was absolutely necessary, but the Pi 3B+ comes with 4 of them, so you may or may not need it.

You're going to need a case. You can buy cheap plastic ones direct from china for about 6 bucks, or you could spend a hundred dollars on a super nice one if you're made of money.

I use it for retro-gaming, so you need a controller. It will work fine with a standard PS3-4 or XBox 360/One controller, or you could buy pretty much any type that uses a USB input and/or bluetooth.

Keyboard/Mouse is pretty mandatory for whatever you're going to do with it.

HDMI cable if you don't have an extra one is a must, unless you're going to use a tiny screen that could run off of one of the USB ports.

Here's the specs of the Pi 3B+:

Quote:

Raspberry Pi 3B+ specifications

SoC: Broadcom BCM2837B0 quad-core A53 (ARMv8) 64-bit @ 1.4GHz
GPU: Broadcom Videocore-IV
RAM: 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM
Networking: Gigabit Ethernet (via USB channel), 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi
Bluetooth: Bluetooth 4.2, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
Storage: Micro-SD
GPIO: 40-pin GPIO header, populated
Ports: HDMI, 3.5mm analogue audio-video jack, 4x USB 2.0, Ethernet, Camera Serial Interface (CSI), Display Serial Interface (DSI)
Dimensions: 82mm x 56mm x 19.5mm, 50g

I'm not sure how much of an improvement that is over the regular Pi 3B. You should keep that in mind though if you're looking to make a purchase. Target only has the Pi 3B for sale right now for $35 and free shipping. I'm not sure where you'd get a 3B+ for the best deal with shipping at this point.

EDIT: I'm seeing on Target that the 3B is only a 1.2Ghz processor compared to the 3B+ 1.4Ghz processor. It's also got 1GB ram, but I'm not sure if it's the same type/speed.

If you are thinking of buying one, I can't recommend them enough. It's pretty amazing what you can do with these bad boys, and I've only got the "shoddy" $5 model that pales in comparison to the specs the 3B+ boasts.

1st day back at work, and I don't think it could have gone better.

Finished my obligatory cup of coffee and was on my way to punch in when I saw my team lead walking in and he said he was so happy to see me that he could hug me. Nice way to start off the week. :)

I guess the last week was a CF with the guy who was managing us manning the remodel crew and the new manager slowly taking over the role. There were a couple of days before the new guy started that a different day shift manager was manning the ship while the team lead and I weren't there and I guess he just phoned it in and nothing really got done because the lemmings didn't have a leader.

I guess my team lead had been singing my praises to the new guy the last two days, and I got to show him that he wasn't full of shit. ;)

Talked to the guy who is now manning the remodel crew about "fixing" my schedule again, and he told me I now had to talk to the new guy and my team lead about it. New guy said with the way that I work, whatever they got to do to keep me around they're going to do.

Not only are we going to "fix" my schedule again tonight, but he's not afraid to hard code it into the system so we don't have to do this song and dance every other week anymore. He said if somebody has a problem with me getting a set schedule he'll just tell them that if they stop letting me do twice as much work as they do then he'll talk to them about getting their own set schedule.

He also said he is going to look into getting me on 7 nights straight since I want it. I was told before that it would take clearance from somebody higher than the store manager to make that possible. Fingers crossed this guy gets that done.

I think I'm going to like the new guy.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Hey BRENDA! I'm soooo not a birthday person! I only remember my birthdate because everyone is always asking me for it, but I shamefully confess I do not remember the birthdates of my own sisters, nor did I remember the birthdates of my own parents.

But with my blood sugar problem I have to keep everything on an even keel.

I don't have quite the dietary considerations that you do, but I need to avoid gluten, sodium, and too many carbs. 1. I have hypoglycemia which is Low Blood Sugar

2. I hate cinnamon

3. I was talking about salt.

That rice dish I was telling Kiki about can last me 4 or 5 meals depending on how much I eat. I also cook chicken legs, wings or thighs and they last 3 to 4 days and then I just add rice, veg or eggless pasta to go with them.

I get hamburger or ground pork, add tomato paste, garlic powder, salt and pepper and that can also last about 3 or 4 days.

I think that's subjective. If you ask most people who work there, I don't think they're going to tell you the same story. I'm in the unique position where the amount of money I make isn't as important to me as the other benefits I get from the job and isn't nearly as important to me as being able to make my own schedule.

Given the amount of quality output I provide, at only around $4 over minimum wage I'm a steal. I also know this, I'm not afraid to let them know that I know they know it, and I've learned over the years how to do this without putting people off. It's not bragging if it's true.

It's taken a bit of time to get to this point. I've been working there a little over 9 months now. I didn't come right out of the gates making demands. I've slowly been positioning myself for this, and now it seems to finally be paying off in spades, if not actual payroll.

I would say that for almost anybody else, this company is no different than your assessment of most companies. I just happen to have a lot of leverage here, not only because of the quality of my work for the pay, but because my position of not being a wage slave allows me some liberties.

Quote:

Anything is possible. They'd have to offer me quite a bit more for me to work full time though. There are full time opportunities for people at my level, but they dont' increase your pay rate at all. I'm not interested in that. I wouldn't even consider working full time unless it was for at least $17/hr. I'd still only take that if I confident that it would translate into even more money and an actual management position within about a year, maybe two tops.

At what they pay me, I'd only work half of my days, and only when they're a week straight. Working overnights you automatically lose 1 day to the switchover every time your off work. Working as many days as possible in a row and having a long break ensures the least time lost to "jet lag".

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I'm okay Sig. Just a mild bout of depression. Happens in and around anniversaries. My Blair will be gone 7years next Saturday and then my birthday is at the end of the month.

It's a shame that disabilities don't seem to count for much in Canada. My dad was tenacious about getting my brother taken care of, but now that it's done he's in a really nice place. Granted, he never would have gotten into housing anywhere near Chicago and he had to go 200 miles south to get into a nice place. It ain't the Hotel Ritz, but it's got everything he needs and it's affordable on his SSID benefits.

I wish you were able to move to a place away from the big cities, or you knew somebody like my Dad. My mom said for years that there was nothing they could do to get my brother taken care of. It wasn't easy, and it took a couple of years, but my Dad finally did it.

I hope things improve for you soon Brenda. I wish I could offer you more than moral support. :)/:(

For myself, I always used to think the best things happened in summer, and the worst things happened in winter. But then I realized winter is when my mood is very low because of the short days. And because of that, my resilience to hard events is down.

Still, it took years for me to get over the death of a parent, because we were estranged for so long, and I know it grieved that parent deeply even as I received a lot of unearned hostility. I regretted I didn't make more of an effort to reach out and reconcile earlier, that I let so much mutual misunderstanding and hard feelings continue.

What I learned is that the most corrosive grief is the grief that comes with guilt and regret, no matter what the season.

But all in all, things have gotten better, even though I can feel my mood slipping a bit with the daylight. People we love pass away. Seasons change. Nobody wants it that way. It's just the way life runs.

I hope the anniversary gets easier over time Brenda.

Hi BRENDA. It seems to me that your mood takes a big dip every winter. Has it ever occurred to you that you might have seasonal affective disorder (where moods fall with falling light levels)?

You might want to do an inet search on the topic; there are a lot of therapies available. Also, if you're clinically depressed, your doctor should be stepping in to help. For me, roughly 20 years ago, I went in for an infected ingrown toenail and saw a random same-day clinic doctor who was very insightful. As I was pressing her for treatment (You say you can't do anything now because it's infected, but if it's NOT infected you say there's nothing to do!) she asked me ... Why did you wait so long? and when I tried to pass that off with a I was too busy she persisted with asking me about what was going on, and the more I told her ... our daughter's deteriorating neurological status, lack of any known treatment, hubby's recent cancer, MIL's recent death from cancer ... the tears started running down my face and then she asked, rather gently Do you think you might be depressed?. And by god, I was. She she rx'd me an SSRI which kind of got me over the hump and helped me press forward with what I needed to do. Also, I picked her as my GP.

I tell you that so you'll know that if you have a good doctor and if you tell him (or her) what's going on with you, he (or she) should be prepared to HELP. It might be something as simple as rxing a bright light for "photo-therapy" to trick your body into thinking it's still summer. And if your doctor is NOT willing to help, you should find another one.

I know it's difficult to go doctor-shopping with limited mobility, but I think somebody needs to step in and help to get you out of a slump. After that, things will look a lot better/ clearer. Also, I will message you.

They do a bit Sig.

I was taking an anti-depressant after my mother died but when I had to go back on seizure medication that had to stop. Those meds don't work well together.

I also put myself through counselling for about 3years, after I got back from Alberta after my Blair died. I couldn't think straight for all the junk that was clogging up my pathways.

I often get slightly depressed as I said around anniversaries and other things like that. So I try to keep busy. Right now it is the stress of dealing with this place and so I am going back into counselling to keep my head on straight which will help improve my mood.

There is no room in here to put a therapy light. Not enough outlets and I will not string anymore extension cords around here as I will trip over them and get hurt.

My GP has been my GP for 30years and she knows that if I felt I needed anymore help I would talk to her or she should.

Also I have to deal with this whole calcifications in my breasts and getting mammogramed for that every 6 to 9months. I go for my next one of that a week before my birthday.

Best week ever.

"My area" was basically destroyed before I came back this time. I mentioned before how before I even punched in on my first day the team lead said he was so happy to see me that he could hug me.

Well... I didn't make it "perfect" before I left on my 6th day. There was just too much to do, and despite the remodel, the area I work is always the hardest hit and it didn't seem to slow down any. I think if I had 2 more days I could have had the entire thing stocked to the top before I left.

Was able to have a lot of conversations with different managers that I normally wouldn't be able to. The whip has been cracked. No more free ride for some while others are working their asses off. It's time for the management to do their jobs. This wasn't an issue when Number 2 was running the show, but now that he's out of the picture, some think that's the cue to get by with doing nothing all night, and that's why my area was destroyed before I came back.

One of the guys got sent home early tonight. The other one had to work his ass off side to side with the team lead last night. They're all going to be separated from now on as well.

New manager has made reference to how "territorial" I am, and now whatever days I'm working this is considered "my area", and I'm only going to have to work with others when I let them know that I could use some assistance. This isn't me being asocial. I can get along with somebody who's hustling just fine. I don't want to waste half the night chatting about bullshit though or be forced to work along somebody half my age that does half the work that I do without any authority to tell them to pick up the pace or clock out.

And the new schedule is out. Actually, the current 2 weeks were changed. To new manager's word it's perfect. It's exactly right, and it's set in stone. Now I don't have to hide how many days I have off from others either like I did with Number 2. I get to call my schedule and get so many days off in a row because I'm a freakin' beast.

Blood pressure is low, 6 pack is coming back, I've got more energy these days than I ever remember having and most of my pains are all but forgotten. I've even been gaining a bit of weight the last few weeks, so I think I'm starting to put on muscle mass again for probably the first time in 15 years. The pains I feel when I leave work these days are all the right ones, and none of the bad ones.

Told Number 2 to take a picture of what it looks like. Even though I've mentioned to several managers that my area shouldn't look like it did 6 days ago when I come back, part of me really hopes that it does so I can kick ass and chew bubble gum again.

I almost don't know what to do with myself now that the week is over. Going to see about my teeth later this week. That leaves me with most of the week to try to fix the weed wacker and take care of my lawn. Kind of strange having this time off with no critical big projects to worry about...

I don't think I'm going to think about it right now. Soon I'll engorge myself on about 4,000 calories and go to sleep for 12 hours.

Happy Labor Day, everybody. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Heh... Didn't get that 12 hours of sleep I was hoping for. Been dealing with 90+% humidity all day and it felt like it was 100 degrees in my house. At least that will be a problem that goes away in a few weeks. If I don't get central air hooked up next year, I'm at least buying a window unit so I can get the humidity out every night and have a room that's comfortable to sleep in when it gets nasty like this.

I just bought a cheap corded weed wacker that had some pretty good reviews so I can clear out the weeds and not rely on my ability to fix the gas powered one that I've been saying I was going to get to all summer. The weeds have officially gotten out of control, and I felt that it was worth buying a cheap weed wacker just to take care of them and eliminate what is becoming a big point of stress in my life when I look at it. Now I can fix the gas powered one at my leisure because I want to and not because I NEED to.

Even if this thing only lasts a season or two, it's so affordable that I don't mind the expense. I know the piece of mind I'm going to have when I finally clear all of those weeds out and get my patio back. Maybe next year when I save up a bit more I'll just go and buy one of those really pricey ones that should last me a decade or two and be done with it.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

This wasn't $5 cheap, but since a new fuel line kit costs around 8-10 bucks it's only about 4 times that. I had some points on one of my cards though, so it was basically free.

My back patio is a bit rough on weed wackers. It's just rectangular stones that look like the sides of cinder blocks that were put down on sand. After the ants pulled up all of the sand last summer the weeds have come out like crazy. I expect to shred through the factory spool in about 20 minutes tops. I'm also going to have to be careful not to work it too hard. These cheaper corded weed wackers have a crappy fuse that's soldered on to protect the motor instead of a shut off switch, so they're known to "die" and be a real hassle to fix. I'm assuming that's what happened with the shitty corded one my friend gave me years ago that went out on me at the end of last summer.

Not really expecting this one to last all that long. Just a temporary hold over until I either fix the gas one or get a good model that's up to the job.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Suppose to rain on Friday.

I don't know what to say. Idiot landlady was down again. Brought me my mail which I didn't think would be here for another week. Came in and looked around, complained about a bit of toilet paper that I hadn't flushed in the toilet, began worrying about her pipes. Commented AGAIN that I have so much stuff which is none of her flaming business. Also moaned that they had their toilet back up which is not my fault.
Then she also proceeded to tell me that her sister who have not rented from in 5 and a half years blames me for a pipe bursting after I moved out.

I could just scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In America, there is no IQ test to qualify for home ownership, nor landlady status.

Is your mail addressed to her? Or is she allowed to mess with your mail?

Had the CT scan done as well as molds for my new falsies. I told the guy doing them that he was probably going to pull a tooth out when he did them and he said that my step-bro-in-law said the same thing. He assured me that he hasn't lost one yet, and true to his word it's still in my mouth. Told him I wasn't really too worried about it since I just want them all out anyhow, but was just a bit worried that it would screw with my speech until we come to the final solution.

I know this guy isn't a surgeon there, but he could be training to be one. I had mentioned how my step-sis had said she was concerned that my bone loss may have been too severe for dentures. He told me "nah... it's never too late for dentures", which really put my mind at ease about the whole thing. I'm not sure what his full qualifications are to make a statement like that, but I can't imagine it would be good for business for an employee to make concrete statements like that without knowing for sure they were true. Five minutes earlier he was looking at my scans from over 3 years ago and was able to correctly guess the two teeth that I have already recently lost.

He let me know that if it's decided that we're actually going to remove all of my teeth that I'm going to be presented with two options. He also says that nobody picks option number two. The first option is to be immediately fitted for a temporary pair of dentures for the first 6 months that will need to be replaced with a 2nd set when things adjust. Option number two is to go without any teeth or dentures for 6 months.

Do you think my frugal ways are bordering upon insanity when I'm already considering letting people at work know that I'm not going to be speaking for 6 months, but I'll buy a boxing style mouth guard to keep in my mouth so my face isn't gross with my lips sunk in until I get the permanent dentures?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

There isn't in Canada either.

All mail goes into one mailbox and so she can see my mail when getting hers.
My mail has my name but this address on it as I am renting a basement suite.

NOTHING prevents her from putting up a second mailbox with your name on it except sheer cussedness.

But the housing situation in and around Vancouver still sucks ... Chinese are still laundering money thru real estate there, the prices are still out of sight, and the supply is very tight. So keep on looking for an alternative but don't get discouraged.
