An hour away in Newport News, Virginia, heavily armed men—some associated with the right-wing “Boogaloo” movement—also gathered outside a police station to protest a misdemeanor trespassing charge against one of their own.

Members of the immigrants-rights group, who learned that their cases would not be dropped, were taken inside the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office to process their arrest paperwork. Members of the Boogaloo group received a public announcement system and chocolate milk from the Newport News Police Department.

The disparity underscored complaints of unequal treatment for protesters in Virginia, which has been a hotbed of unrest in 2020—from a massive pro-gun rally at the state capitol building to racial justice demonstrations after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis Police custody.

Activists on the left have accused police of cracking down on them for minor infractions while giving right-wing demonstrators a free hand. And Thursday’s demonstrations in Richmond and Newport News illustrated the canyon in police responses against the left and right.

The protests were extraordinarily nonviolent, and extraordinarily nondestructive, given the unprecedented size of the movement’s participation and geographic scope.

The plaintiffs also say that Trump tried to discredit voting by mail, directly sabotage the delivery of mail-in ballots and threaten to "ban voting by mail and prevent mailed-in votes from being counted." The president's repeated refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power should he lose the election is also cited in the lawsuit.

Hunter and Teeter communicated with each other as they traveled from their respective states to Minnesota, court documents said.

Hunter also communicated with Michael Solomon, a Boogaloo Bois member and a Minnesota resident. Hunter sent his precise location to Solomon on the evening of May 28, two blocks away from the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct building.

A video taken on the night of May 28 shows a man, identified as Hunter, firing 13 rounds from a semiautomatic rifle into the third precinct, according to court documents.

The shooter then walks toward the camera, high-fives another person and yells, “Justice for Floyd!”

Two days after Election Day, federal prosecutors said, Brian Maiorana warned on social media that “the carnage needs to come in the form of extermination of anyone that claims to be democrat … as well as their family members.”

Then on Sunday, the day after Democrat Joe Biden won enough electoral votes to defeat President Trump, the 54-year-old allegedly posted an even more explicit anti-Semitic threat apparently aimed at Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and the FBI.

“The Turner Diaries must come to life,” he allegedly wrote, referencing an extremist right-wing text that influenced the Oklahoma City bombers. “We blow up the FBI building for real.”

On Tuesday, federal agents arrested Maiorana at his home in Staten Island on charges of making threatening interstate communications. Although he is a convicted sex offender and banned from owning guns, federal agents say they found evidence that Maiorana had bought gun parts and a crossbow.

“The Department of Justice will not stand idly by when people like the defendant allegedly threaten to kill elected officials, lawful protesters and law enforcement simply because of animus towards the outcome of an election,” Seth D. DuCharme, acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement.

Maiorana’s arrest comes amid an upswing in violent rhetoric on the right as Trump contests the election results and makes unfounded claims of fraud. Over the weekend, a police chief in Arkansas resigned after social media posts in his name called for Democrats to be killed, and last week, Trump’s former chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon was banned from Twitter for calling for violence against federal officials.

Prosecutors don’t specify which social media platform Maiorana allegedly used to make his threats, but federal officials said in a complaint that he had been posting violent messages there since September. Many of the posts suggested violent attacks on liberal protesters.

“Its come to the point where pipe bombs need to be thrown into these mobs of ... protesters,” he wrote on Oct. 19, according to a criminal complaint.
