Poverty seem to be one of the biggest influence on society going to shit followed to crime gangs and drugs taking over an area. Republicans are not without balem, big into NeoCon Globalism outscoursing Low Tech, Industrial Jobs and High Tech Manufacturing, industrial hubs scattered along the Great Lakes, Cleveland would be another that has faced economic desolation.
Some people blame gun culture, some black black rapper gangster culture, some blame rock heavy metal music making kids shoot things others blame atheist and apathy some blame all sorts of stuff but very few have answers.
Chicago was once known for education, religion, broadcasting, sports, jazz, and high culture and maybe less greed? maybe, it was a center of production, science and manufacturing, it has become a rotten crime hole. Parts of Portland, Detroit, Florida City in Florida State, Baltimore Maryland, Detroit in Michigan, McKeesport Pennsylvania following the same path, Memphis now ranks as one of most dangerous city in America, people moved San Francisco to Oakland to avoid insane property prices but the crimes came with them, New Orleans, LA another center of crime.....
I don't know if Culture fixes this stuff over night I am also reluctant to blame any violence on movies or rap music or video games ... but there could be something to an Anti-Social thing, Broken Window Theory. I don't believe there is one answer, parts of Europe in the East have terrible levels of domestic violence, Acapulco Mexico, Caracas Venezuela, the Middle East are crime terror holes, they have some of the worst murders, terrorisma nd crimes, they don't do drugs or drink in the Middle East, they don't listen to 'Rap' despite they had an old culture and history. Well, the current mayor is a real horror show: a black witch who blames everything on "racism".

Apparently violence really took off when the housing projects were torn down. That took geographically-stable gangs and scattered them across the city, where they started fighting each other.

It starts with jobs.

Crime, drug use, violence, alcoholism, premature death, poverty, suicide all go up every time jobs go down. Everywhere, every time. Why do you think that rural USA has such an oxycodone and meth problem? Then, if meaningful jobs at liveable wages were plentiful, you wouldn't need so many government giveaway programs to pacify the population. Like government housing projects, for example. There wouldn't be so many homeless people who are mostly drug addicts, alcoholics and the mentally ill, NOT just people who have fallen on hard times.

But employment and economics is a NATIONAL policy, not a city policy. It has to do with tariffs and trade agreements and immigration ... basically, what goods, people, and money cross our national border and in what direction.

Another fix is to end real estate speculation which is driving housing costs up into total unaffordability. RE prices are basically a case of sector inflation, where inflation is limited to a few sectors (like housing, the stock market and health insurance, for example, which have been inflating faster than general inflation for decades.)

Since inflation is always (ALWAYS) a case of "too much money chasing too few goods" ... in the case of housing, it's not as if the population has exploded to the point where the housing stock is so inadequate it justifies prices tripling in ten years... this is a case of "too much money" being made available through low-interest mortgages.

People who are looking to buy a home to live in should get preferential mortgage rates, but big banks and commercial RE ventures should be paying interest rates equivalent to RE inflation rates + 5%. Foreclosed homes should be sold to individual owners, not held by banks or bought by large RE corporations. THAT would cool speculation down right quick.

One of the problems with RE speculation, aside from the fact that it drives up rent and hme prices to where individuals can't afford it anymore, is that it encourages people to "trade up" rather frequently, and since people are moving all the time it prevents the formation of stable neighborhoods.

Better policing. Our CA DAs are a joke; bc of prison overcrowding they retroactively downgraded a number of crimes from felony to misdemeanor and let out a buch of criminals which led to an explosion of thefts and assaults. But until you fix the unemployment/ underemployment problem, police will always be trying to stem the tide.

And more balanced view of homelessness. You can't arrest people for being poor or for vagrancy, but many peple in the homeless population commit crimes, mostly against other homeless. Homeless people don't need just a home, they need treatment and even detention of some sort so they don't just get cycled out again to commit more crimes.

I also think that cities need to be limited in size and population, but I have no idea how to go about it. It seems that past a couple million people, a city becomes unamanageable.

It all comes down to reward and punishment. If you reward productive social behavior with money and agency, punish criminal behavior, and discourage speculation and greed, you can turn a city around. But some of it is beyond a city manager's remit.

Dick Turpin

The story involves Dick Turpin, who may be an unfamiliar name if you're not British. Turpin was a poacher, burglar, horse thief, highwayman and murderer who was rightly executed in 1739. Unfortunately ballads and popular theatre romanticised his story and eventually turned him into a hero. He performs an impossible feat of horse-riding in a Victorian novel called Rookwood, which became part of the legend. He's been retconned into an 18th-century Robin Hood and his assorted films and TV series include titles like The Adventures of Dick Turpin: The King of Highwaymen and His Majesty Dick Turpin.
Naturally this has the Carry On team swarming like flies around excreta. The only problem as far as they're concerned is that being called Dick doesn't allow enough sexual innuendo, so they call him Big Dick instead.
The story involves Turpin's struggle with the Bow Street Runners, which in an uncharacteristic burst of historical authenticity really existed. They were founded in 1749 and this film takes place in 1750, although this means Sid James (61) is looking surprisingly well for a man who was hanged eleven years earlier at the age of 33. Anyway, these Bow Street Runners are led by Kenneth Williams, with Bernard Bresslaw as his superior and Jack Douglas as his sidekick... and therein lies the boredom. The plot's one-sided. Kenneth Williams, as usual playing a snooty idiot, couldn't win a battle of wits with a five-year-old. Jack Douglas is hardly more competent. Sid James's repeated humiliation of them is practically bullying, although this wouldn't matter if he had any goals of his own. He doesn't. He enjoys his life just as it is, thank you very much. All he wants in this movie is for nothing to change and for him to go on perpetrating robberies.

Then there's Hattie Jacques. She's playing his housekeeper of ten years' standing, yet she's astonished whenever he comes home late and so every time he's having to come up with flimsy lies to cover himself. These get found out. What a load of tripe. I'm always delighted to see Jacques and as ever she's one of the best things in the film, but she's being forced to play a rehash of her earlier roles and she deserved better.
At the one hour mark, I was wishing the film would hurry up and finish. I'd have bailed if I hadn't been going to write this review. Oh, and yet again Rothwell was making me uncomfortable with his assumptions that everyone commits adultery and that it's normal to make leering sexist comments to people's faces.

Carry On Dick is a 1974 British comedy film, the 26th release in the series of 31 Carry On films (1958–1992). The story is based on the Dick Turpin legend and features Turpin (James) as an antihero, attempting to evade capture by the authorities.

I recently reviewed the results of the mayoral election in Chicago, which appear to have sounded the death knell for America’s third-largest city. The buildings will remain and the people without the means to escape will still huddle in their homes (at least those who have homes), hoping to avoid being the next statistic in a crime wave that shows no signs of abating. Commerce has slowed to a crawl and its once-famous entertainment district is now too dangerous for most to risk an evening out on the town. At the Washington Examiner, Stephen Moore takes a similarly dim view of Chicago’s prospects, but he notes that the Windy City is not alone in its downward slide. Many cities across the United States are simply becoming unlivable. And the real tragedy in all of this is that the decline was completely avoidable. But an epidemic of suicidally dangerous liberal policies has opened the gates for the barbarians that were always waiting outside.

It’s not just Chicago that has become a war zone. Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco were not so long ago the crown jewels of the West Coast. They were said to be progressive cities that worked. No more. Now, they are unlivable. San Francisco is overrun with homeless people on seemingly every downtown street corner, feces on the sidewalks, and trash everywhere.

In Portland, major businesses are pulling out in the aftermath of the takeover of the radical anarchists during COVID-19. Crime is so rampant that Walmart recently said “adios,” shutting down its last store. Rains PDX, a clothing store in Portland, shut down last November after a string of break-ins made it impossible to stay open. This printed sign pasted on the door says it all:

“Small businesses (and large) cannot sustain doing business in our city’s current state. We have no protection, or recourse, against criminal behavior that goes unpunished. Do not be fooled into thinking that insurance companies cover losses. We have sustained 15 break-ins. … We have not received any financial reimbursement since the 3rd.”

For all of recorded history, large portions of humanity have tended to cluster together in centralized strongholds, while others have lived in less populated areas where agricultural activity was more common. Having cities simply made sense. Larger numbers of people could better defend themselves from aggressors while trade and economic activity were more convenient when centralized. But city life also required an unspoken agreement that everyone would have to play by the rules and establish methods of maintaining order. More people can accomplish great works but when a significant portion of a large population turns into a mob, the destruction it can wreak is similarly exaggerated.

Sadly, that is what we are clearly observing in America today. Moore describes the “cults of economic and political quackery” that have hypnotized metropolitan residents, leading to calls to defund the police, empty the jails, and the turning of a blind eye to crime in the name of “social justice.” Those bothering to seek solutions inevitably attempt to “tax the rich” to the point where the most productive flee for safer havens.

These cults have not impacted the entire country evenly. It’s true that all communities experience drug overdoses or deaths and inflation puts pressure on all households while the dollar weakens and prices rise. But particularly when it comes to crime, America’s cities have taken a far more radical downward t

I'm never even going to try to live inside the box again, and I doubt there's anything they could do at this point that would make me change my mind about it.

I'm just lucky that I set myself up to not have to worry too much about that and that when I did turn to drinking myself into oblivion I didn't let it kill me and I stopped before it completely ruined me.

I was more than happy at my last job. Part time, paying way less than your average part time job pays post-Covid World, and with zero benefits.

But I couldn't even keep that. They took that away from me too.

I'm done living in the world they want us to live in. I'm happy to co-exist and I'll work for somebody else only when I need to, but the system is rigged against everyone who isn't connected and the system and everyone in charge of it can go fuck themselves.
