"It ain’t unreasonable, Kaylee," Jayne said. Kaylee had been so lost in her telling of what had happened, she had almost forgotten who she had been talking to. Jayne was staring down at her like she was a broken doll he just didn’t know how to fix. But he was trying, gorramit he was trying and there was a lot that could be said about that. Simon should have been there, telling her he didn’t mean what he’d said, but instead it was Jayne, trying to put together her broken pieces. She would have never expected it.
"Aw, come on, Kaylee, don’t cry," he whispered. Kaylee didn’t think before she moved, just lifted herself up on her toes and wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her lips to his. It was a mistake, she knew the moment she did it. Kaylee hadn’t expected the flutter of butterflies or the pounding in her heart because of his lips against hers. She pulled back and looked at him.
"I shouldn’t have done that," she said softly. She could see Jayne’s mouth opening to respond, she didn’t want to hear what he would say. Good or bad, she couldn’t bring herself to know. She was still with Simon, she wasn’t supposed to be going off kissing other crewmates. So instead of letting him say a thing, she ran off.
Normally the engine room was her sanctuary, but Jayne was still in there and it wasn’t likely he would leave without saying his piece so she climbed down the ladder to her bunk and closed the hatch behind her. She was a stupid, stupid woman. No matter how many problems you were having with your lover, you shouldn’t be going off kissing the next man you see who tries to cheer you up. Kaylee sat in her bed and covered her face in her hands, not sure what to think or do.
The door to her bunk opened and Kaylee didn’t know who she hoped would climb down that ladder. When she saw Jayne’s boots she felt the butterflies flutter in her stomach. He landed on the ground with a thud and closed the hatch door behind him. Her room was small and in a couple steps he was in front of her. She opened her mouth to say something, not even really sure what would come out, but Jayne just shook his head. He cupped her face in both hands and pressed his mouth against her. His kiss was hard and fierce, parting her lips and sliding his tongue in. One of his hands let go of her face and wrapped around her, bringing her closer to him. She moaned against his lips, her heart racing and her body disobeying her as her lips worked just as fiercely against his own. When he pulled back his stormy blue eyes met hers.
"That’s how you surprise kiss someone, little girl," he said, looking her up and down for a moment.
"I’m with Simon," Kaylee whispered out. She had meant it to come out firmly, but that was as loud as she could make her voice go. His eyes held hers, not looking anywhere else and not letting her look anywhere else.
"He ain’t here now," Jayne countered. Who could argue with that logic? But part of her tried anyway; no, she was with Simon, this couldn’t be happening. Kaylee put her hands on Jayne’s arms to push him away. She didn’t though, couldn’t. She could feel the muscles in his arms tense under her finger tips, and suddenly she wanted to touch every muscle in his body and feel it move beneath her skin.
Kaylee was still for a long moment. If only he would make the first move, at least she could ease her conscience some, maybe convince herself she had tried to say no, but he just stood there, waiting for her. Jayne was a simple man, but one thing she knew about him was that he liked being wanted and he wasn’t ever gonna take advantage of a person who wasn’t willing. Ai ya, she was going to hell for this. Her mind worked fast to try and talk her out of this, but her body was faster. Her hands gently tugged on his muscular arms, pulling him towards her and that was all the encouragement Jayne needed. His mouth went to her neck and he laid her back on the bed. In a few seconds he was between her legs and his mouth was working her neck and jaw line.
"You’re gonna enjoy this, baby girl," he whispered. Kaylee only nodded back, she knew full well she would.
