Rendered images of my CG model of Inara's boltcaster from the Big Damn Movie. A few small liberties were taken to insure a reasonably functional weapon.

1) This is very cool!

2) How does anyone have time for something like this?

3) How do you figure it triggers?

How does a normal bow "trigger," Edison? Inara pulls the gripped handle back, cocking the weapon before letting it go. Or something like that....

AgentOmega...any thoughts?

Thanks for your wonderful comments, everyone.

To answer Edison's third statement, and in agreement with BEB:

The rear handle is pulled back, loading a spike into the barrel through a slot in the bottom. When tension on the handle is released, it moves forward, and the spike is shoved down the barrel, where the electromagnetic coils (the gold cylinders) take over and accelerate the spike to its final velocity.

Personally, I don't feel the upper arm and cable have any real value in such a system, but without it , the average moviegoer probably wouldn't immediately think 'fancy bow'.

However, one could argue that the rear arm the cables are attached to is actually connected to the rear piston handle, so that the forward spring arm/cable setup is what pulls the rear piston handle forwards when tension is released.

By the way, the magazine holds 8 rounds, but the top round is already chambered in the renderings. The magazine exits between the two cables through the slot on the top.

Incredible, as per usual Omega.

Now tell me...can I have one?

The tension in the cable must have a purpose. I mean other than saving them having to edit out the string of the original bow... ;)

You can't have weapons, BTF! You're all Australian and stuff! ;)

I just wished they'd have stuck with the old-school bow. So much cooler; and, I think, more in keeping with Inara's character.

My $0.02.

Nice render, though. purdy...

Ok um, I love this.

Yea, and I totally agree Causal. At the first test screening before they cut th scene with Mal and Inara in her old shuttle I was like "She's get a freaking bow!" I remember the first screening where they had changed it to the cg bow.

I would'a prefered the old bow, but if the were gonna do the cg bow they should'a changed it on all the scenes.

OK, now I gotta go back to the movie and see if I can actually see any moving parts. I think maybe it was a little hard for me to look at the weapon and not Inara.

Tell Me
So, I made a Mal/Inara wallpaper. It's big, because my monitor is big, but it seems to fit decently on smaller monitors as well.

The screencapture is from "The Train Job", when Mal barges into Inara's shuttle unannounced, because it's manly and impulsive. The designs are font characters; the square is a lowercase 'm' in "Chinese Whisper" and the circle is a lowercase 'i' in "Oriental View".

We Meddle Too Much (Repost)
A distinctly morbid wallpaper, but sometimes that's what it takes. Too often we question whether or not we can, instead of whether or not we should.

Since "TOC: Operation Perseus" is intended to be a multimedia experience, here's an image I put together for Chapter 1. Playing the part of Delta-One is the G-Man from Half-Life.
