Analysts tracking Russian influence operations find a feedback loop between Kremlin propaganda and far-right memes.
by Isaac Arnsdorf
ProPublica, Aug. 23, 2017

Angee Dixson joined Twitter on Aug. 8 and immediately began posting furiously — about 90 times a day. A self-described American Christian conservative, Dixson defended President Donald Trump’s response to the unrest in Charlottesville, criticized the removal of Confederate monuments and posted pictures purporting to show violence by left-wing counterprotesters.

“Dems and Media Continue to IGNORE BLM and Antifa Violence in Charlottesville,” she wrote above a picture of masked demonstrators labeled “DEMOCRAT TERROR.”

But Dixson appears to have been a fake, according to an analysis by Ben Nimmo and Donara Barojan of the Digital Forensic Research Lab at the Atlantic Council think tank. The account has been shut down. Dixson’s profile picture was stolen from a young Instagram celebrity (a German model rumored to have dated Leonardo DiCaprio). Dixson used a URL shortener that is a tell for the sort of computer program that automatically churns out high volumes of social media posts whose authorship is frequently disguised. And one of her tweets attacked Sen. John McCain for his alleged support of Ukrainian neo-Nazis, echoing language in tweets from Russian outlets RT and Sputnik.

The same social media networks that spread Russian propaganda during the 2016 election have been busily amplifying right-wing extremism surrounding the recent violence in Charlottesville, according to researchers who monitor the activity. It’s impossible to tell how much of the traffic originates from Russia or from mercenary sources. But there were hordes of automated bots generating Twitter posts and much more last week to help make right-wing conspiracy theories and rallying cries about Charlottesville go viral.

A sample of 600 Twitter accounts linked to Russian influence operations have been promoting hashtags for Charlottesville such as “antifa,” a term for activists on the far left; and “alt-left,” a term Trump used, which was interpreted by many as suggesting an equivalence between liberal demonstrators and white nationalists in the so-called alt-right.

The sample includes accounts that are openly pro-Russian like state-controlled outlets RT and Sputnik, which a joint U.S. intelligence assessment concluded are “part of Russia’s state-run propaganda machine.” The sample also includes those, like “Angee Dixson’s,” that seem to be written by typical Americans. And it follows automated bots that help make messages go viral and even users around the world who spread the Kremlin’s messages whether or not they mean to support Russia. The network is tracked by four researchers working with the Alliance for Securing Democracy, a project of the German Marshall Fund that seeks to expose efforts to undermine Western democracy.

(A spokesperson for Sputnik took issue with the assertions about it in this article, providing 22 links to the news service’s articles that she called “highly critical of the president’s response to Charlottesville.” She argued that to “ignore that reality … would only mean that you are fixing the facts to push a false narrative.” The spokesperson also disputed that Sputnik is a vehicle for any purported Russian disinformation campaign.)

“The Russian influence networks we track are definitely amplifying the broader alt-right chatter about Charlottesville,” one of the researchers, J.M. Berger, said. “The major themes they have been pushing are the ‘both sides are violent’ argument and conspiracy theories that George Soros was behind the counter-protests, although the latter has been trending more sporadically.”

The latest Soros accusation, which PolitiFact found to be baseless, shows another aspect of how messages snowball as they pass between the American right-wing and Russian propagandists, according to Nimmo. A U.S. right-winger asserts a “fact,” a Russian news agency fuses it with a Kremlin narrative, and then American right-wing websites parrot the Russian news agency’s assertion.

Soros, a Hungarian-American investor and major Democratic donor, long ago became a frequent bugaboo for the Kremlin and for Republicans. He funds the Open Society Foundations, which support democracy and development around the world — and they have given money to ProPublica, including its Documenting Hate project, while accounting for less than 3 percent of ProPublica’s revenue so far this year. Many recipients of Soros’ contributions are viewed as politically liberal, but some right-wingers and the Kremlin tend to see his hand (or more precisely, his wallet) in any action they perceive as left-wing.

The accusation that Soros was behind the Charlottesville counter-protesters appeared to have been first uttered by Alex Jones, the conservative conspiracy theorist and provocateur, on Aug. 14. The next day, Lee Stranahan, a host for Sputnik, repeated the claim in several YouTube videos, according to Nimmo. Stranahan was previously a prominent advocate for the #FireMcMaster campaign against national security adviser H.R. McMaster.

The pro-Russian networks are also injecting Russian propaganda about other countries into U.S. far-right circles. After Jones’ InfoWars interviewed Stranahan on Aug. 15, Stranahan’s charge that the U.S. is hypocritical for supporting Nazis in Ukraine (a years-old Kremlin line) while condemning them at home appeared on fringe websites such as Mint Press News, TheLastAmericanVagabond.com, BBSNews and JewWorldOrder, Nimmo found.

“Given the number of channels that propagated the narrative at the same time, it is not possible to say whether a single channel or many different channels inspired the American actors’ linkage of Charlottesville and Ukraine,” Nimmo wrote in a blog post. “What does appear probable is that the U.S. activists derived their narrative directly from the Kremlin and its supporters? —? and thus amplified Russian disinformation in America.”

Some in the self-described alt-right have embraced Russian support. At an earlier protest of the removal of a Confederate monument in Charlottesville in May, people chanted “Russia is our friend!”

Tracking disinformation online is challenging because it can be hard to discern users’ motivations and affiliations. But congressional investigators probing Russia’s interference in the 2016 election are interested in how social networks spread fake news and propaganda, such as documents stolen by Russian hackers from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman.

“The Internet and social media provide Russia cheap, efficient and highly effective access to foreign audiences with plausible deniability of their influence,” another of the researchers working with the Alliance to Secure Democracy, Clint Watts, told the Senate Intelligence Committee in March. “This pattern of Russian falsehoods and social media manipulation of the American electorate continued through Election Day and persists today.”

Judge Approves Warrant For "Antifa" User Data From Anti-Trump Website

A District of Columbia Federal Judge has approved a government warrant seeking information about users and subscribers to an anti-Trump website which has been linked to rioting during the presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C., but he added protections to safeguard "innocent users."

Chief Judge Robert Morin ruled that DreamHost, an LA-based web-hosting company, must turn over data about visitors to the website disruptj20.org, which is a home to political activists who organized protests at the time of Donald Trump's inauguration as U.S. president in January, many of whom have since morphed into the controversial "antifa" movement.

Yes! I have been aware of that feed for only a little while, it is bad fabulous. More proof. If you get a chance, follow Molly Mckew for a while. She's definitely a good source. It's the war no one is talking about. It has been happening / is happening now - "we" gave Russia about a decade head start if not more. When you see all the pieces moving you can't help but see how it just makes complete sense. I have no faith that anyone in a position to do anything to combat this will decide to fight back though. Yeah, some people here think 1984 is a manual.

Quote:

The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. The superstate and its residents are dictated to by a political regime euphemistically named English Socialism, shortened to "Ingsoc" in Newspeak, the government's invented language. The superstate is under the control of the privileged elite of the Inner Party, a party and government that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrime", which is enforced by the "Thought Police".

One of the features of Airstrip One is that it is at perpetual war, as Wikipedia says. The "enemy" switches from Eastasia to Eurasia from month-to-month, and Eurasia is sometimes an enemy and sometimes an ally. When that happens, the people never seem to notice; they just blindly accept that the enemy of the day has ALWAYS been the enemy of the day, and hate it as ferociously at the enemy of the day before, even if it's not the same.

Yanno, when I read that, I would have thought it impossible to bamboozle an entire population that thoroughly. And yet, I see fellow Americans turning their fear and hate on a dime: Last week it was Saddam and WMD, yesterday it was "terrorists", then Qaddafi, then Assad, then RUSSIA!. Now it's the KKK. One enemy after another, and everyone in a perpetual state of distress and anxiety because they never know where the picador is coming from next.

When Donald Trump used the term “alt-left” to deride the anti-fascists in Charlottesville last week, he was adopting a usage that has gained currency among far right ideologues on Fox News. It was Trump’s attempt to draw moral equivalence between the neo-Nazis and the protestors confronting them.

But the protestors in Charlottesville were traditional anti-fascists with a proud history and defined identity – there is nothing “alt” about them. If the label was being misapplied to them, maybe “alt-left” is nothing more than a right-wing media trope to smear progressive activists.

Not quite. Before the right hijacked it, the “alt-left” label was used mainly by progressives to refer to a strain of leftism that sees liberalism rather than fascism as the main enemy. It is distinguished mainly by a reactionary contrarianism, a seething resentment, and a conspiracist worldview.

In its preoccupations it is closer to the right: More alarmed by Hillary Clinton winning the primary than by Donald Trump winning the presidency; more concerned with imagined “deep state” conspiracies than with actual Russian subversion of US democracy; eager to prevent a global war no one is contemplating but supportive of a US alliance with Russia for a new “war on terror”.

Like the right it disdains “globalists”, it sees internationalism as liberal frivolity, and its solidarity is confined to repressive regimes overseas.

Though these tendencies have always been a feature of the far left, they were turned into a powerful obstructive force after the last Democratic primary as the “never Hillary” fringe of Bernie Sanders supporters defected to the Green Party (in its worst incarnation under Jill Stein) or chose to sit out the election. Loath to admit mistake, the enablers of Trump now spend their time minimizing what he has unleashed.

For the alt-left, Hillary Clinton's call for a no-fly zone to protect Syria's civilians was proof that she wanted a global war. Donald Trump on the other hand was going to protect America from WWIII because of his "non-interventionist mindset" (Glenn Greenwald).

Jill Stein and Susan Sarandon both insisted that Trump was "the lesser evil". Even his bombings were "consistent with the particular 'non-interventionist' outlook" (Greenwald & Tracey).

But for the alt-left, the threat of WWIII hasn't yet abated. Even before Trump was inaugurated, Glenn Greenwald was on Fox News with Tucker Carlson alleging that the CIA was undermining Trump because he had spurned their plan to overthrow Bashar al-Assad.

Greenwald has seen little cause for contrition since. Earlier this month he hosted Carlson on his podcast to argue that there was "no tangible evidence… virtually none" that the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia. The whole affair was a "deep state" conspiracy to undermine a president who is eager for détente with Moscow. It was an attempt to spark a new "Cold War", an example of "red-baiting", "McCarthysim", "Russophobia".

Can you say "deflection", SECOND?

SURE YOU CAN!

Somehow, you manage to conflate the people who are VIOLENTLY against Trump with the people who are mildly FOR Trump? How did you manage to mash opposites together like that, except as an act of deliberate propaganda?

How about focusing instead on people who are VIOLENTLY AGAINST TRUMP? Yanno, not Susan Sarandon but violent left-wing provocateurs AS WELL AS right-wing provocateurs?

Do you suppose you can manage to focus?

Germany Bans 'Extremist AntiFa' Website For "Legitimizing Violence Against Cops"
While over 300,000 Americans have signed a petition demanding the US government formally recognize AntiFa a terrorist organization (and some 'cells' calling for "all-out revolution"), the US mainstream media continues to provide cover for the violent leftist organization (as do college professors). However, in Europe, German authorities have banned the most influential AntiFa website in the wake of violence that occurred last month outside the G20 summit in Hamburg.

You forgot North Korea.

I know it's a horrible thing to say and I don't really mean it... but I was on the phone with my grams the other day and I said that we need a big celebrity to die some crazy death to give everybody a few weeks off of all of this bullshit.

She then said somebody who died that used to be a big name years ago and I said that wouldn't even be a blip on the radar. It needs to be at least as big as Heath Ledger on the pills, but even bigger than that. David Carradine dead in a closet doing god knows what ain't gonna cut it either. We need another Michael Jackson level event here.

I know it's horrible and cynical as shit to say, but seriously.... everybody needs a break from the media bullshit for a week or two and I think only a story that big is going to do it.

A break from media bullshit with more media bullshit? I dunno, SIX. I think the only thing that will work is for people to stop checking their phones (or PCs, or TVs) a million times a day for two weeks.

I dunno. I think it's just getting hard to keep track of it all. Never have we been surrounded by so many bogey men.

I think the plan is working perfectly. You've got people like me on one end who are just so desensitized to all of it and don't even really give any of them any credence or attention, and then you've got people like poor Wishy who are paranoid out of their freaking mind that there are so many evil people around her that there might be one in her closet or under her bed.

That's just it. You're not going to get people to turn off their phones or stop checking their PCs or TVs. It's just not going to happen. It's the end of summer right now Sigs. A few more months and for many people in this country there will be even less distractions from this bullshit until springtime. I'm not even going to re-hash all of the bullshit a lot of people focused on this summer while it slipped away.

My mom lost her phone... again. My step-dad has to walk around with a freaking fanny pack to hold his. The flip phone was the Perfect Design, but people gave it away to have these computers in their hands at all times. My step-dad is 72 years old and never once used a computer for pleasure or outside of work at all until he got his smartphone a few years ago. Now he's on Facebook.

I talk to less people now than I did years ago, but I get butt dialed more now than I ever did.

T is hardly in the minority thinking that the smart phone makes him smarter.

My niece is growing up with that as a part of her life. She's now only old enough to realize that when her Uncle Jack calls she can't see my face, although I don't know if she truly understands it yet. That damned phone and any new innovations it makes is going to be as inseparable from the kids growing up today as their lungs for breathing air.

Ben Nimmo, a fellow at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab, said all signs pointed to the person or people behind “Jones’s” account being employed by the Russian government.

“You cannot give 100 per cent certainty, but you can look at all the different behavioural signs and put it together,” he told The Independent.

“Why would somebody living somewhere in the Solent getting up before 5am in the morning and spending 12 hours tweeting far-right and Kremlin talking points seven days a week.

“What kind of human being does that?”

Russian whistle-blowers have already exposed what is known as “The Troll Factory” in St Petersburg – a nondescript building where hundreds of agents are paid by the Russian government to operate social media accounts in multiple languages advancing the Kremlin’s interests and viewpoints.

Mr Nimmo said the “factory” workers also worked 12-hour shifts during Russian working hours, adding: “There’s a pattern into which this account fits.”

The analyst said that although many of the viewpoints espoused by “Jones”, such as anti-immigration, nationalism, anti-Islam, “deep state” conspiracy theories and opposition to leading Western figures like Angela Merkel, cross over with the far-right, there were also more niche Russian interests.

Examples include claims that the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 by pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine was a conspiracy theory, arguments the annexation of Crimea was legitimate and heavy criticism of Turkey after the country shot down a Russian fighter jet.

Keir Giles, an expert on Russian security at Chatham House, said @DavidJo52951945 was “not an isolated phenomenon”, with thousands of similar Twitter accounts currently online.

He described a scale of Kremlin-backed online activity ranging from automated bots sharing information from state media and trolls who “contradict and abuse” critics, through to more subtle efforts.

“The pattern suggests that this account one of the very high end ones,” he told The Independent.

“It’s consistent with the overall Russian strategy. The setting up date in 2013 is also at the time when Russian was putting its troll and bot campaign into high gear.

“But this is just one account. Multiply that across the thousands and thousands of other fake accounts that are out there and you begin to see the scale of the challenge.”

Hmm.

This graph of the troll account's talking points is also pretty good:

And I think it's not so much as winning the argument about these topics as keeping them alive and directing them, saturating the web with key words and topics. Charlottesville for example. There's a lot of effort to focus on "antifa." "Keep typing and talking about antifa." It takes the discussion away from KKK, white supremacists, Trump's ignorant behavior.

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/08/23/russia-propaganda-ne

"It is important to note here again that we are not asserting Russia is responsible for creating or shaping this content, except possibly by sending clicks to the sites in question. The Russian influence network amplifies content found online that suits its narratives, for obvious reasons. Amplifying content created by third parties is a powerful tool because it distances Russia from the content and conveys a breadth of support for the themes. It’s also just plain easier to jump on someone else’s content or trend than to create your own out of thin air.

One of the most prevalent themes pushed by RIOT is the promotion of conspiracy theories that muddy the waters regarding any wrongdoing by Russia or its allies, particularly the Syrian regime. This material is significantly promoted over social media, with occasional help from the attributed outlets. Examples over the past year include conspiracy theories seeking to discredit Bana al-Abed, a young girl in Syria who tweeted about the civil war with assistance from her mother, and reports of chemical attacks by the Syria regime, as well as the Seth Rich conspiracy theory, which conveniently exonerates Russian hackers from being the source of the WikiLeaks dump of Democratic National Committee emails during the 2016 election."

Here's the dashboard the above article mentions:

I've only just started watching it.

"ANTIFA" is a group self-described as "anti fascist". It's a recent name, but there have been black-clad violent left-wing provocateurs ever since the anti- World Trade Organization riots in Seattle in 1999. Then they were called the black bloc.

KRAPO, I didn't say that left-wing violence was as frequent as right-wing violence (although, if you include the black block in the tally, it might even up the score a bit). What I said was that the violence caused by the left-wing should be treated the same as violence by the right-wing: that there should be no difference in how crimes are prosecuted depending on who committed them, just as there should be no difference between blacks and whites or rich and poor or men and women.

I know the idea of "blind justice" might seen a bit quaint in your class-ridden nation, but just as a reminder of that ideal

The MSM was all for Antifa, until it turned out they weren't just "anti Trump" but also "anti-police". Just recently, the MSM started to run negative stories about Antifa when before that were pretty quiet about the mayhem that they were causing.

Oh, one more thing: the chart of the issue being discussed by your described "Kremlin troll" also matches the issues as discussed by the MSM. In other words, your "troll's" comments reflect the MSM talking points. I don't see your troll's output attempting to talk about "America's interests" or "how societies are like biological organisms", or the debt burden of the USA or how banks get to "print money", or even "global warming". If anything, that chart that you posted represents what YOU post about more than anything. Are you sure YOU aren't some sort of troll??

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

"But regarding my comment to SIX - that people here probably couldn't take a 2-week break from posting - I think I'll start my 2-week break, right about now."

THAT WAS QUICK! Oh jeez, I can hardly breath! Too damn funny. I wondered what that smell was... wet troll hair.

It was fine until you sped up time. I guess troll time is different.

WISHY, have you ever learned to use a search engine? If you don't want to be tracked be google, use https://www.startpage.com/ . You might actually learn something independently, instead of having to be spoon-fed by the MSM.

Gonna re-start the clock.

Bullshit! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA God damn you owe me a new keyboard and screen!!!!!! I haven't laughed this hard in months!

Just another thing to deflect about...

I've never even heard the term "antifa" and neither has my history obsessed husband before a couple months ago. It's like they custom created an imaginary group to point at and deflect about and people materialized. I'm reading news every day and I've never seen the term. Where did these people come from???

"Deep State" - another favorite. People need these amorphous, shape shifting bogey men that can't be defined but can have all kinds of bad intentions ascribed to them. We get the best, freshest BS from Siggy.

Gods, Sig has issues. That OCD thing is on steroids lately.

I didn't even ask WHAT they were... I can google...and I did.. months ago.

I'm not one to condone violence, usually, I mean.. we've quite enough of that on a normal day.

But I get why they exist. Sometimes you have to fight violence with violence to get attention.
And it's clear that all republicans understand is violence, they just don't like it thrown back in their faces...
