I'm jazzed for it. I think Greg Pak is an interesting choice. I'm not a big Planet Hulk fan, but I've enjoyed the Totally Awesome Hulk stuff I've read. And the Mal/Zoe relationship is something I'm particularly interested in seeing more of.

Fox acquired a "significant minority stake" in BOOM! Studios, which is probably why they wanted them to have Firefly rights, although I'm not really sure what that means in light of the Fox/Disney deal. Maybe there's no longer a reason for them to care. BOOM! is reprinting the old Serenity Dark Horse comics in a new collection, so I can't imagine that leaves Dark Horse with anything Firefly-related. I expect we'll be seeing Firefly comics exclusively from BOOM!.

While he wasn’t very familiar with the Firefly TV show before signing on (although, he clarified, he loved the Serenity movie), Dan McDaid was “excited straightaway” to work on the comic. At first, it represented “the chance to work with Boom!, the chance to work with Greg Pak, and an opportunity to draw lots of cool [stuff] like cowboys and spaceships.” Then once the official announcement dropped, he found another source of excitement for the comic: the Browncoats.

“The Browncoats are everywhere,” he said. “People I would never have expected to be Firefly fans came out and said, ‘Ahhh! I love Firefly!’ and ‘I’d give my right arm to work on that!’ It was a huge reaction that I really, really didn’t expect…Even the local newspaper wanted to talk to me about it.” Considering McDaid lives in a small post-industrial city that was voted one of Scotland’s most “struggling” cities, making it into the paper for drawing the Firefly prequel comic was no mean feat.

As I understand it, the Legacy book is just reprints of old Dark Horse comics (and weirdly, it doesn't even say which ones, as far as I can tell). The possibly signed print could be cool, but... what is it a print of? I'm jazzed to read Firefly #1, but do I really need NINE variant covers (8 + the box set exclusive)? I bet all of that variant art will be collected in the first trade anyhow.

I can't wait to get my hands on Firefly #1, but I think I'm just going to get the single issue for now and (almost definitely) the first trade whenever it comes out. Are other folks thinking of picking up the Big Damn Heroes box?

So this is a bit interesting - Fox are working on a Buffy reboot TV series (which has Joss on board as a producer) and have taken back the Buffy comic book licence from Dark Horse:

Wash and Book improve sales: Boom’s Firefly #1 Has Pre-Orders of 57,291 Copies for this November.

The comics without Wash and Book do not sell as well. For example, Serenity: No Power In The ‘Verse #1 in 2016 reportedly sold an estimated 39,492 copies.

BOOM! Studios has announced a Dec. 12 release date for a second printing of Firefly #1, which sold out its initial printing before its Nov. 14 release.

The new printing will feature a cover by Kirbi Fagan spotlighting Kaywinnet Lee "Kaylee" Frye.

It is... a comic book. I mean, definitely a Firefly comic book.

I would put it on par with the Dark Horse comics, probably comfortably mid-pack (so far).

For comparison, I rate the Dark Horse comics in the following order:

1-Those Left Behind - a good "Season One finale" and bridge to the movie

2-Better Days - a fun "lost episode" that might rate #1 if the conclusion weren't marred by some logic flaws

3-No Power in the 'Verse - mostly harmless. Some interesting ideas, but ultimately lightweight stuff.

4-Leaves on the Wind - tremendous potential here that remains largely unfulfilled.

5-Float Out - good as a "wake" for Wash, but overall, doesn't add much to the 'Verse.

6-The Shepherd's Tale - some stories should remain untold. This was one of them.

I have not included the shorter one-shots, and, looking at the list, it strikes me that Brett Matthews was able to get far more story out of 3 issues than other folks did with six. Given that the new comic is supposed to go 6 or 8 issues (I think), that doesn't inspire confidence.

It's hard to judge based on one issue, but my guess would be that it will rank somewhere around Better Days or No Power in the 'Verse, as an entertaining - but perhaps lightweight - "missing episode." They've chosen to focus on the "secrets of the Unification War," which, to me, at least, seems less interesting than focusing on the current situation and interactions of the crew. Time will tell.

You know what's funny? I buy these comics, I read these comics, I can't tell you the plot line of just about any of them.

I can't imprint on my memory anything that doesn't require imagination. I can tell you plots of books I read 30 years ago in detail, I couldn't tell you what happened in a comic I read twice yesterday.

Although there are some nice moments, I have not been especially impressed with this new series so far. At least the Dark Horse stuff had the legitimacy of being done by folks who worked on Firefly or were Whedon's brother. To me, this feels almost like the early era Star Wars comics from Marvel - written by folks who didn't really know the "master plan" (only not as good).

I know Mal and Zoe's "horrific crime" was cited, but even in this issue, it was very much hand-waved away as "that's not the full story," and I'm sure when the full story comes out, Mal and Zoe will look like heroes. Additionally, I find the apparent timing a bit problematic, since it seems to imply that Mal and Zoe were pretty tight very early in the war, which seems to run counter to what we know in the series (where their mutual respect evolved over time - indeed, in the flashback from The Message, Zoe doesn't seem especially impressed by Mal).

Hopefully, the next few issues will pick up. I will say that the OTHER plotline - the one not mired in war-related backstory - provided a nice twist, and I'm interested in seeing where that goes.

In this comic Boss Moon talks to her mother, who happens to be on another planet.

"Gloria?! Are you all right?" say Boss Moon's mother, having heard a disturbing news report.

"Little tied up at the moment, Ma. I'll call you back."

Apparently, faster-than-light communication is possible in the Firefly Universe, which makes writing comic book stories easier, since there is no perceptible time delay in conversations between people millions of miles away. Likewise, the movie Serenity also used instantaneous communication between the Operative and Mal at Haven when he was angered by the slaughter of Book and the children.

In earlier comics, robot is always in silhouette, is man-size, and it is firing a gun which never misses. One target was Mal's badge. Mal believed he was lucky that his badge stopped the bullet. Nope, it was deliberate. The only feature on its "head" is a big smile with glowing teeth. The comics never showed it in good light but if it had been, it would not be mistaken for a human. See the last page of #16 for a good look at mechanical arms and legs on a humanoid robot. The robot's head is in shadow, but you can see the never changing smile lit up by L.E.D. teeth.

I have been hoping that Firefly could become much like Judge Dredd, a comic that is at issue #425 for the monthly magazine and at #2204 for the once a week shorter stories. If Firefly is going to match Judge Dredd's publishing longevity, the Firefly writers need to find their own story groove. Judge Dredd already has killer robots working as police alongside Dredd. Copying Judge Dredd, Firefly has added killer robots working as police alongside Sheriff Malcolm Reynolds, but that is schizophrenic for Firefly because Mal is not a law-and-order kind of character. That line of stories has to die and I hope it is soon.

Reviewer "Fireflyin'" writes: The Boom! Studios comics: I finally got around to talking about the Firefly comics from Boom. Although 'moaning' might be a more apt description.

Chris Sullivan's question: I’m curious how the boom comics get the characters voices wrong.

Fireflyin' answer: Personally I imagine that it's a combination of two things. 1. Joss Whedon's characters in general tend to have very distinctive ways of talking. This makes it very apparent when characters say something in a way that doesn't sound like the way they should say it. 2. Greg Pak doesn't have sufficient familiarity with the characters. In the first issue, at the back of the comic in the interview section he says how he was initially unsure about taking the job because he'd never seen Firefly before...

If you're asking for clarification of what I mean by the character voices sounding wrong, the best you can do is just read the comics and decide yourself if you can hear the characters saying these lines. Whenever I've read Pak's dialogue, in almost every instance I've had to make a concerted effort to try and hear the characters saying these lines. This was just not an issue in the Dark Horse Comics or in James Lovegrove's Novels (there are a few niggles here and there but for the most part Lovegrove captures the voices very well).

I'd offer a simple example; in almost every instance, Jayne refers to Shepherd Book as 'Book'. Not 'Shepherd' or 'Shepherd Book', just 'Book'. In the show, Jayne I don't think ever refers to him that way. In fact all the characters nearly exclusively refer to him as 'Shepherd' or 'Shepherd Book'. I'm offering this as just an example. This is a very basic idiosyncrasy of these characters and Pak can't even get that right. It's repeated in other situations. Kaylee seems to call 'Mal' by his first name a lot when she almost always refers to him as 'Cap' or 'Captain' in the show. Mal seems to call Simon by his first name too much when in the show he usually calls him 'Doc'. Basic things that this guy is getting wrong because he just doesn't seem to be familiar enough with these characters. The way that characters talk to and about each other is such an entry-level thing, if he can't get this right, what hope has he of mastering the more complicated situations that the characters find themselves in?

Reading his dialogue, it makes the crew of Serenity feel like strangers and that's not why anyone is picking up these comics.

I finally finished the six issue arc set twenty or so years after Emma’s birth. The covers are pretty great. My non-spoiler review is below. Interested in your take as Boom Studios have not been stellar in keeping Firefly characters and canon consistent.

So, this story has potential, as it is really, in my mind is the best way to continue the Firefly franchise on the small or big screen. The actors have aged, or are too busy, so there has to be a whole new cast- but not a reboot of the olds crew.

Instead, the focus of a new show should be beyond the old cast. The perfect person to lead that revival is Emma, the daughter of Zoe and Wash, with a new crew (in this story that's Lu and Salo).

In "Brand New 'Verse," we're 2,924 days/8 years (mentioned by River in issue #6) after Simon and Kaylee moved in together to be parents on Bryson's Rock (a moon of Greenleaf) and twenty years after Emma was born, making it around 2539. Emma and Zoe are still flying Serenity, trying to get by, with a crew of Lu and Salo. Lu is a mechanic, while Salo is the level-headed muscle. Lu and Salo seem to be taking the place of Kaylee and a hybrid Jayne + Book character respectively.

Emma and Zoe are a good pair. They squabble like a mother and daughter sometimes do, but they also see eye-to-eye on what needs to be done in honor of Wash and based on their admiration for Mal. Wash only appears in this story in flashbacks, while Mal is mentioned (and only seen once in a flashback drunk at a bar), but it is never completely explained what happened to him. Just that he's not on Serenity.

In their travels, they discover a woman that survived cryosleep in the old ark ships from Earth-that-Was. She only remembers that she was from a place called San Francisco, so she goes by Cisco. The crew learns that the Alliance is after intelligence about the ark ship, Cisco, and her knowledge of a brand new 'verse beyond theirs. This of course leads to a chase, which leads Emma and the crew to Kaylee and Simon on Bryson's Rock (to hide), and later to find River, Inara, and a kid with powers greater than Rivers’.

I won't give the rest away, but I stand by the statement that this story has the potential to be the path forward to see Firefly on TV again. The comics aren't great as there is very little character development on Salo and Lu, and Emma is only really given a few plot points to understand how the past shaped her. She starts off a bit bratty but comes into her own as a leader when faced with danger and survival. She's a hybrid Zoe, Mal, and Wash.

The story arc is also only a disappointing six comics, leaving so many unanswered questions about the plot, forcing a fairly complicated storyline to wrap up hurriedly without much of a climax. The basic structure of this series, however, could and should be expanded to a longer series of stories - hopefully on television. Here's hoping to keep flying'.
