My house was built in 1915ish, but it wasn't one of those under-designed, over-built homes, before they had everything engineered to the last psi and lifespan year, and started using particle-board. I think it was a cheap kit home. So it was cheap-and-under-built. When I was redoing the interior walls - removing fire-and-water-damaged moldy lathe-and-plaster, and replacing it with mold-free, glass-wool-faced drywall - I saw that some interior LOAD-BEARING walls were made of scrap wood - even an old door! And over they years I've seen that the stones in the rubble-foundation - literally stones stacked on top of each other on the bare dirt - have cracked during earthquakes. I mean that literally. Stones are cracked.
AND, after my first big 'quake here a few decades ago, I called in a structural engineer to evaluate my house. He had a couple things to say: 1) earthquakes cause 'hidden damage' in wood structures, as nail holes get bigger and bigger when the structure sways, and 2) "it's a good thing there are no heavy members up there", meaning, a large beam or set of beams in the roof would literally tear the house apart as they swung with substantial inertia during a quake. And then - well, you can't tie the house to a rubble foundation, and the structure is wood and great kindling for a fire. (There's also all the lead paint, plus all the lead-contaminated dirt around the house from the paint flakes, but that's another story.)
My plan was to tear it down, scoop off the dirt, and rebuild an old-fashioned-looking, but well-engineered-and-built new 1.5 story home, with a basement. I had planned a universally-accessible, reasonably fire- and earthquake-safe home. But I found out between my purchase and home design (that I designed myself and took to 3 architects for review), that it had been designated a city historic home. Sigh. No tear-down possible. And in my city, 'historic home' means I can't - for example - take off the old, lead-contaminated, fire-kindling, clapboard wood siding, and replace it with non-toxic, identically-appearing, fire-proof cement-board siding.

On Halloween (before the power went out and I was bailing the sump well to save the house), I had already had it up to here when seeing how wet the snow was making the interior walls and I finally got a real good look at how poorly the entire thing was constructed. I called my brother up and the first thing I said was "Do you have any C4 or know anywhere I could buy some?". Sometimes I think I could just make more money off of this house by doing a badass no-look walk away from it while I hit the button on the remote detonator and the whole thing just explodes in a great fiery mushroom cloud behind me as I walk off into the sunset... and then upload that video to YouTube where it goes viral and I get a billion views.
Speaking of all getting out fine though... Did I mention how my oldest and best friend who I just talked to for the first time in years at the party almost died last year? (I think I did). Goddamned building fell on him at work.
That was his and his wife's 2nd birthday party of the night, and they were looking pretty wasted by the time that Uber came to pick them up. I hope he remembers the chat we had about it though. Twice in my life already I've lost somebody I cared about and I've had to live with the fact that I bailed on what would have been my last opportunity to ever see them before it happened. That kind of thing tends to haunt you for the rest of your life.
He just laughed and said "Yeah. Me too buddy." when I said "I'm glad your still alive". But I hope that I got across the fact that it means a lot to me that I still have a chance to talk to him... maybe make up for disappearing out of everyone's lives not once now but twice.

My house problems probably aren't going to actually physically kill me. At least the chances are slim to none. Although, the idea of something terrible happening to it before I can fix it up and sell it and having to go to work full time doing something I hate for whatever is left of the rest of my life might make me wish that I were dead. Strange weather pattern we're having for sure. It gets to 7 degrees in an hour or two, then starts climbing all night and morning long for the next 24 hours straight.

New research shows that the Ridgecrest earthquakes that began in July ruptured at least two dozen faults. It’s the latest evidence of how small faults can join together to produce a large earthquake, and how those quakes can cover a wider area than expected.
The findings are important in helping understand how earthquakes can grow in the seconds after a fault ruptures ... In areas blanketed by a crisscross pattern of faults, an earthquake on a smaller fault can destabilize bigger ones, beginning a process that leads to a much stronger earthquake.
In the case of Ridgecrest, some follow-up earthquakes came seconds after; the largest one came some 34 hours later.
Researchers discovered the Fourth of July Ridgecrest temblor was actually three distinct earthquakes — magnitudes 6.1, 6.2 and 6.2 — on a trio of faults. Added together, they produced enough energy to create a magnitude 6.4 temblor, said Zachary Ross, Caltech assistant professor of geophysics, the lead author of the paper. The first two quakes ruptured at right angles to each other, forming the shape of the capital letter L: the first to the northwest and southeast, the second to the southwest. The third quake also ruptured to the southwest. The faults ruptured over 12 seconds.
The second large quake, on July 5, was actually made up of four smaller events that ruptured over 22 seconds, producing a magnitude 7.1 event, the most powerful in California in the last 20 years. In that same event, at least 20 smaller faults that intersected the main faults also ruptured, according to the study, making the zone of land atop moving faults wider than might be expected.
“The geometry of this fault network is just incredibly complicated,” Ross said. “These faults are unmapped ... many of them are at right angles to each other; they’re cross-cutting each other. In the central portion of it, they are spaced a few kilometers apart, like dominoes. There’s 20 of them in a row. This 7.1 ripped through all of these.”
So instead of earthquake strain being relieved by many magnitude 6 temblors over a number of faults, “you could just do it in one magnitude 7 by having the rupture travel up and jump from one fault to the next,” Hauksson said.
A modest fault that begins to move in a quake can make it easier for a neighboring fault to rupture, Hauksson said. In Ridgecrest, the Fourth of July earthquakes probably kept on hammering strong spots along seismically strained faults until the larger magnitude 7.1 ruptured on July 5, Hauksson said.
And that they seemed to be extending at the ends.

Made some meals that the family liked (and they're a picky bunch!). Today ws chicken and dumplings ... hubby hates chicken unless it's almost unrecognizable but today he asked for seconds, and there were no leftovers.
Yesterday was bbq pork with Greek-style salad, which usually begins with cucumber, celery, red pepper, cauliflower bits, and garbanzo beans but I had all kinds of other yummy things to throw in like kalamata olives, leftover tomato, leftover green onion, and avocado from the tree.
The day before that was hot and sour soup with tofu and spinach and green onion. (That's where the leftover green onions came from)
The day before than was vegetable lasagna, which dear daughter prepared. It's quite a complicated recipe and she did such a nice job!
Tomorrow it's beef and bean burrito, taking into account everyone's food allergies/sensitivities, of course ... no beef or red salsa or olives or lettuce for me (all allergies); no beans or salsa for dear daughter (sensitivities); no sour cream or olives for hubby (preference).
After that, chicken gumbo with Christmas limas from the garden (chicken bits for dear daughter) and okra, celery, turkey sausage, tomato bits, and leftover corn and whatever leftover vegetables I think will fit in with the soup.
I still can't taste anything, but I really like making food that others enjoy, and that's good for them.

Wow, Lady Rain, such a tease in these parts.
The 10-day weather forecast predicted rain for yesterday, today, and tomorrow, totaling something like 0.7". But the closer the storm got, the more it evaporated until we were at 0.13" scattered thunderhowers for this AM.
Well, the scattered thundershowers came and went ... barely disturbed the dust on the car. But then there was rain ... a LOT more rain than they predicted after the thundershowers went away. I put out my "rain gage" (it's just a flat-bottomed, straight-sided acrylic pencil holder) and it looks like we got 0.3" - not as much as originally predicted but a lot more than they finally thought. The first rain of the rainy season: YAY!

I was noticing that as well @ wunderground for my zip code. As I was checking over 3 days (sometimes a few times a day) it went from 95% chance of rain, to 80%, to 75%, to 70% ... and the predicted amounts kept dropping as well from about 0.75" to about 0.33". MOST of the rain was predicted to fall at night. So when I got up an saw barely a half inch of rain in my "rain gauge" (a somewhat less accurate straight-sided ball canning jar) I sighed a disappointed sigh. But about 10:00 I heard thunder in the west. And shortly thereafter we got some on-and-off thunderstorm downpours through about 14:00. My "rain gauge" now sits at about 1.75".
As I recall though, the many years of drought started with November rains ... and then ... nothing. So based on these rains I have no anticipation for what the future will bring.
Do you know of any long-term forecast? The only one I have is the Dallas Raines one I stumbled across from about 6 weeks ago where he was predicting another drought year at about half normal rainfall.

There are several three-month and six-month forecasts out there that say the southwest in general should expect a slightly warmer and drier (20% less rain) than average. El Nino/La Nina neutral. HOWEVER, they then go on to say that about 75% of rain comes as "pineapple expresses" which are very hard to predict.
Anyway, it's a good thing I harvested my lima beans when I did (I like to let them dry on the vine) because the rain would have turned them moldy. If anyone wants to know what productive plant to grow it's "Christmas limas" (pale green with dark purple blotches). Last winter I just cut them back because they had twined over everything including the roses, and this year they gave a terrific crop. I think now is the time to cut them back again since the weather will be too cold for them to produce for the next few months.
I see that the wunderground forecast is predicting almost 3" pf rain over Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with a wee bit possible on Saturday. My gutters were cleaned and my "rain gage" is at the ready!!!
Yesterday I decided to tackle the paperwork chores that I've been putting off. Hubby had to take RMD so I had to sign and get notarized a spousal waiver and upload the documents (and find the USB stick formatted to be compatible with our scanner/photocopier).
I have to get the latest odometer readings for our auto insurance which means I have to jump start the battery on my "project car", which meant I had to charge up my jumpstarter battery which meant I had to find the charge cable.
I have to move an account over which means I had to re-activate the account, locate the new bank branch, get the wire transfer/account closure forms and get hubby to sign them and once that's done upload the docs.
Yep, in order to do this I had to do that, but in order to do that I had to do something else. Not finished with that yet but I have an early ayem appointment with my ENT surgeon today to see if SHE can figure out why my nose is so intolerably stuffy. I've tried everything I know what to do. I thought it was the Santa Anas so I saw my allergist and I'm rinsing my nose four times a day and avoiding the myriad of foods I'm allergic to (including coffee ... sigh) and have hardwood floors and air cleaners etc etc ... and I have an appointment with the immunologist, but that's all the way in late January and I can't wait that long. I hope the ENT doc has something to offer, because this is really killing my sleep.
One LAST thing: I have not posted about That Parking Lot Tree in a long time. Even tho I haven't gone to the Farmer's Market in quite some time dear daughter and I were watering it faithfully to previous summer. Then we had a bonanza of rain last winter so water wasn't necesary. I kept checking it thru this summer, even watered it a few times but someone else must be taking care of it because it has stayed green thru the summer, and here we are into the rainy season. The Parking Lot Tree has a few dead branches from its near-death experience several years ago, but otherwise looks robust and healthy. Its leaves should be turning soon and then the tree will be safely asleep for the winter, such as it is in So Cal!

Oh BTW while I'm at it, this belongs in the "recipe" thread but while I'm here ... PictSweet does package frozen turnip greens but alas they aren't available at any stores near me. They used to, but I guess not any more. It must be a southern thing, like low-gluten flour (Swan White) for tender biscuits.

Seems my boss's husband dislikes what I read. And last night he asked me what I have been reading. I answered that I had just finished reading a book based on Dune written by Brian Herbert, Frank Herbert's son and another man Kevin J. Anderson. It wasn't a bad book but of course being science fiction, I had to explain to them what it was about. Disapproval came when I started talking about the universe of "Dune". Then I said I had started reading a Star Wars book, one of the newer ones and of course that got the stink eye as well.
They had just watched the live action version of "Aladin" and thought it was great. Said I wasn't into fairy tales. Husband's reply, "But science fiction is fairy tales."
Answer, "Yes, but some of those are becoming science reality."
Then I told them I was waiting on a copy of "Good Omens" by Neil Gaimin and Terry Prachett. Anywho more disapproval because it talks about god and a angel and demon being best friends. Which of course led to a discussion about the subject.
So funny to sit there and watch then try to convert me. I just sat and listened and internally rolled my eyes.
My boss who I think I have mentioned is a medical doctor talked about how the universe is a perfect place and there must be. I sat there thinking no the universe isn't a perfect place as black holes serve no real purpose. No light and they suck things into them. I didn't mention the danger of asteroids or meteories.
Speaking of metoeries, I missed them what was falling last night. Couldn't see from my place. Have to see on the news where they were headed.
Probably thought they had a captive audience since I was asked to stay to supper.

Jeeze Signy - every time I think I have a stack of things to to get unburied from, I read your posts.
I count my successes at one or two paperwork things per week (not totally completed but at least addressed for now), but with my ADHD I'm form-challenged, and I have a lifetime history of scrambling paperwork, plus decades of inattention while I was too busy/consumed elsewhere. So everything involves a lot of outright anxiety (what buried landmine could THIS possibly be?), and procrastination, plus getting my nerve up to tackle another anxiety-provoking thing.
Well, I do what I can.
Have you tried a bed wedge to address any reflux you might have? It could help. I raised the entire head of my bed and I think it's helped considerably. I no longer wake with an asthma cough. Another thing I do is wash my pillows every time I wash the linens. But if you can't do that, perhaps an allergy-barrier cover might help. But I'm truly sorry about your nose problems.
THANKS for checking out the turnip greens! I did look online and SUPPOSEDLY Walmart has them. But in the past I've found that that kind of information is usually not right, like when I was trying to find yuba. At least I know now not to run from store to store because you looked where you did!

Onion, kale, egg, and cheese bake
Signy, this should probably be in the recipes thread but here it is ... I do this in the oven because it has a cook-time alarm that's REALLY LOUD!! ... so because of that, all my instructions are for the oven. But this would work on a stove top as well.
Get a medium (2qt or so) saucepan with cover. Mandolin a HUGE onion or 2 medium onions into the bottom - try not to get rings b/c they're messy to eat. Get some pre-made kale and heap it all the way to the top, it'll cook down substantially. Add a T of oil, cover, put it in the cold oven and set it to bake (convection) at 400F, and set the cook time to 15 minutes. You only need 15 minutes at temp because it cooks as the oven is pre-heating. When the alarm goes off, take out the saucepan, stir the onions and kale together, make a couple of wells (not all the way to the bottom, that keeps the eggs from sticking to the bottom) and crack a couple eggs into them, cover with cheese of your choice, cover, and repeat - convection cook at 400F, but this time the cook time is 8 minutes. The onions cook up sweet, the kale is tender and savory, and what's not to like about eggs and cheese? I salt and pepper at the end. It's no fuss, tasty, and nutritious! Perfect of you're going to fix a meal for just one or two (if 2, get a larger saucepan and double the amounts).
ETA: at TJ's they were trialing mashed cauliflower which was delicious - very fluffy and creamy like mashed potatoes. But I'm curious if I can make it at home with a lot less salt and chemicals, and if I can, does it survive freezing. I'm really hoping to make a credible chicken and gravy with 'mashed potatoes'. Now I know DD can't eat cauliflower, so for her maybe she could have actual mashed potatoes and the grown-ups could have the low-carb mashed cauliflower substitute. I personally am not interested in it also having mushrooms, I'm just looking for simple comfort food for winter. But if it sounds like something you might be interested in, and if you'd like mushrooms, I could try them out in the gravy.

Maybe they thought they were just "having a conversation". Or maybe they really were actively trying to convert you to something (altho what they were trying to convert you to is a little unclear.)
Either way, these people are effing clueless. I've been a boss at work, supervising a team of up to 13 professionals performing forensic analyses and research for environmental regulation enforcement. I've been a boss at home, since we needed a careiver to watch our daughter when she wasn't at school and while we were at work, and I have NEVER had "conversations" about sensitive topics (race, religion, politics, world economics) with subordinates because no matter how much we like to think that we're all equals in the opinion sphere those conversations can never be equal. It would be too easy for someone to feel that they have to shut up and listen to me pontifcate; and a terrible imposition on their freedom. Not only that, it would be illegal, since it would also be too easy for anyone to claim that I was "harassing" a protected class or creating a "hostile work environment". I saved the few conversations that I had for non-subordinates and a non-work environment, and political conversations were few and far between.
Anyway either way your boss shouldn't be imposing their opinions on you, either inadvertently or deliberately, from a position of being the one who writes the check.

That 3" of predicted rain over 3-4 days has dwindled to 1" over 2 days. By the time it (almost) gets here it will be 0.5" over one day, maybe.

Well, I'm trying to get the weeds sprayed. That little rainstorm germinated a bunch of weeds, again. I was hoping that by aggressively weeding last year before seed-set and spreading corn gluten pre-emergent weed preventer I'd see some lasting benefit, but it looks like there are almost as many weeds sprouting this year as before, so I'm going to use a weedkiller. (I wish I had a little flame-thrower!) I have two: a "natural" weedkiller and roundup. They're going in a head-to-head competition, but I have to troubleshoot the roundup sprayer first because the pump is working but no liquid is flowing.
I'm also experimenting with drying this year's tremendous feijoa fuit-fall. That's the thing about feijoa: You can't pick it early and ripen it off the tree, you have to wait for the fruit to fall, and when it does it falls all at once. Far too much to eat and share with neighbors and friends. I tried making jam last year but I wasn't happy with the flavor and it would have taken too much sugar to make the jam set properly so this year I'm trying an oven-drying method. If it dries properly and family tells me the flavor is good I might make a sun-drying rack for next year, assuming that I have the time, because it would be good for drying a lot of things.

I don't think we're completely beyond the possibility of having at least one more Santa Ana, but the ones we had a couple weeks ago were chilly at night though warm during the day. Those were as opposed to blazing, fire-starting hot Santa Anas which we had a few weeks before that. Such is the desert where the Santa Ana blows in from, on its way out to the ocean.
We do seem to be into fall/winter. Where I am, which is the inland foothills, where summers get hotter and winters get colder due being away from the moderating ocean effect, and rains generally are wetter due to the elevation, there are a few nights predicted to be getting close to freezing at about 35F.
Yep - here I get freezing weather in sunny SoCal during winter.
I'm also predicted to get rain. Fingers crossed.

That's the thing about feijoa: You can't pick it early and ripen it off the tree, you have to wait for the fruit to fall, and when it does it falls all at once. Far too much to eat and share with neighbors and friends. I tried making jam last year but I wasn't happy with the flavor and it would have taken too much sugar to make the jam set properly so this year I'm trying an oven-drying method. If it dries properly and family tells me the flavor is good I might make a sun-drying rack for next year, assuming that I have the time, because it would be good for drying a lot of things.

DAMN about the weeds!!! I haven't done it yet but I myself am going to experiment with vinegar (agricultural/30%), and a little soap (actual liquid soap, not detergent), sprayed with an all-plastic hand-pump sprayer (a larger version of the type you get with say Clorox Clean-up; the large generic version purchased at Ace). Online I see the knockdown is pretty good. But again online I see resprout rates are high. But nobody seems to have tried respraying and respraying to finally exhaust the damn weeds to death! But that's why years ago I came to be in favor of hardscape and mulch landscaping, because of dealing with weeds at the time. Still, once I get past my backlog I'm trying to get unburied from, I hope to experiment with the natural weedkiller, on a repeat schedule. It may make a wider variety of easier gardening possible.
I sometimes dry things in my convection oven on shallow-rimmed cookie sheets. I set it as low as it will go (170F) for convection to get the air circulation, and set up a few racks. I actually purchased a couple extra oven racks from the mfg so I can get an oven-full going. What looks like a lot when you have it on the tray shrinks down to nothing! An oven-full of fresh goes down to less than a half-pound of dried. So far mostly I've dried vegetables for snacks, but it would be nice to make jerky, and maybe fruit leathers.
You seem to be further along on the natural weedkiller and oven-drying projects.
PLEASE let me know how they turn out! I have a lot of interest in those!

Ok so the more naturalweedkiller (Natria) seems to have "burned" the weeds, but only where I really, really soaked them. Not economic, I would have to use an entire bottle for a small part of the yard, and SOME weeds seemed to be resistant even when soaked. Not sure why those particular ... they were dandelions, spruge and such, just like the weeds that "burned".
AFA the Roundup ... something wrong with the pump itself, with both ends of tubing open the pump makes noise but liquid doesn't flow. So I rinsed the Natria pump and used that for the Roundup. I'll let you know what that looks like tomorrow and what both look like the day after.

AFA fruit-drying, I followed the generic advice of cutting the feijoa in 1/4" slices and putting them on lined trays with the oven on low and the door propped open slightly, and they DID dry out sucessfully. They are pretty sour and a little sweet, dd things they're too sour and hubby likes them. I can't tell whether they still have the light esters that make up the flavor, but my next batch I'll slice and sprinkle with a goodly amount of sugar and stir before drying and see if the sweet/sour balance is better.

Managed to find the charger cable, charge up the portable jump-starter, start the car, read the odometer, and run the car on high idle for 30 minutes. I hope that will charge the battery for at least a week. I learned that you CAN'T leave lead-acid batteries sit uncharged as you will do permanent damage and reduce their performance.
Hubby put up dd's curtains today, with our help.

This isn't just specific to lead-acid batteries either.
I can't recall off the top of my head, but all four of my power tool batteries went bad after a few years of not using them at all. I know I watched a video of what causes that, but I don't remember the details. I believe some sort of crystallization process occurs that gunks up the system.
I had very limited success by trying out two different methods for "jump starting" these batteries, but I don't think it actually works very well for the long haul.
The first is putting two working batteries together in series, attaching to one of the leads of the bad battery and then continuously tapping the other wire on the other lead and creating a spark. Believe it or not, this will actually cause the battery to take a charge... at least temporarily.
The other way is to put the battery in the charger and then just plug and unplug the charger into the wall again and again and again until the Red light doesn't come on and the Green flashing light letting you know it is charging comes on.
I believe both of these methods really just work on the same principal.
Although I was able to get more life out of these technically dead batteries, they were never the same. Barely held a charge and it wasn't long until they just stopped charging and you had to do it again.
I probably should just throw out the DeWalt set of power tools I have since I'm never going to pay for new batteries for them, but I haven't because they don't take up all that much room and one day I would like to order new cells after testing all of the old ones and seeing how many I would need to replace. I could probably get both of the batteries working again for about $12 to $15 bucks if I ever get around to it. Not a bad deal considering the set was around $300 10 years ago and would probably cost me around $450 to buy it today.

So despite a recent flare-up of incredible nasal stuffiness which is keeping me from sleeping I'm still chugging thru the day, only with naps. Finally went to get my blood tested to see if I've developed allergies to STILL MORE foods and saw ENT surgeon who Rxd oral steroids and another nasal spray (some sort of spray anti-allergen).
The weeds that looked "burned" yesterday from Natria look more burned today. The weeds that got sprayed with Roundup late Sunday look just as green and sprightly as before. I know they need to be actively growing and I had sprayed them late, but one sunny day later they look like I just watered them with a sprinkler. I think I'm going to wait until after this upcoming rainstorm and re-spray on the first sunny day, and see whether that does any good.

Thanks for the update on the weed killer, Signy. You brought back to mind - Roundup needs to be sprayed on actively growing plants on green surfaces where it can be adsorbed. That makes trying to kill Bermuda grass in its encased, mostly brown runner-form really difficult.

So, Roundup. I know it's supposed to be effective but I think I would have been better off pissing on the weeds. In addition to the sprouts I soaked about a dozen LARGE broad-leaf weeds because I assumed they would serve as a good indicator of effectivenes.
I'm not sure what went wrong. Either the bottle was very old and the chemicals passed expiry (altho there was no expiry printed on the bottle or label there was a lot of dust on the bottle) or the temperature was just too cold for the roundup to be absorbed. Altho they say the best temperature for application is between 53F and 77, and I know for sure I was in that range.
I wound up spading and raking the worst parts.
I have a heavy, dark tarp - maybe I can use it to insolate the weeds. I think I'll try that after the rain.

How long ago did you apply the Round Up, and did it rain at all after you applied it?
Not sure why, but some weeds are much more resistant than others to the poisons. Usually when I spray, most of them are visibly dead or dying within 2 to 3 days, but some would hold on for as much as a week.

It claims to be able to create 213 gallons of poison out of a single bottle, for only $20 bucks. I'm never going to get that much out of it since I don't sit there measuring and I'm sure I pour more into the water than I need, probably by quite a bit. But it does the job as well or better than any expensive brand name weed killer I've ever used.
Just keep in mind that it will kill EVERYTHING, so don't spray it on your grass.

I absolutely hated spraying for weeds and insects before. I'd been using an off-brand sprayer for years that got progressively worse over time until it got completely clogged up and stopped working.
I don't know why, but when I bought a replacement I decided to spring the extra $5 and try out the Round Up sprayer and I couldn't believe how happy I was with it. This thing works at least 20 times better than the cheap one did when it was brand new. You hardly have to pump it at all to get a fire hose amount of water coming out of it instead of that piddly little stream I had resigned myself to for years. You can also adjust the head to something like 5 or 6 different positions for the desired stream effect. Spraying for weeds or bugs used to take me longer than mowing my huge lawn and required hundreds of pumps until I got this bad boy.
I even went back and bought another one. One for weeding and one for bugs. I just threw out the old ones that I was going to try to fix. No point doing that since no matter how well I fixed them they wouldn't come close to how good these things work.

Windy as hell here today. I think the cold front is coming back in.
I've blown the leaves off of my yard a record 4 times this year. That's as much blowing as I've done in the prior 3 to 4 years combined.
There isn't a single leaf left on any of the 4 maple trees on my corner lot, but there's still a ton of Oaks and other tree leaves up on neighbors yards. The stupid wind is blowing in just the right direction to bring them all across the entirety of my front yard. It looks like shit out there now.

Well, I have a couple of errands to run today before Mah jong. Then tomorrow I have mah jong in the morning and work in the afternoon. Friday I will probably run some stuff to a Thrift shop. Was going to do it today but I can't drum up that much energy. Same thing for Saturday.
I know I bought a Christmas tree and deccies but at the end of November I am now becoming surrounded by the stuff. And it is a little much for me. *sigh* No tree up for me until December maybe around the 20th. See how I feel.

Just for kicks I'll also use DuckDuck, which is what I normally use. Supposedly DuckDuck uses the Google search engine but anonymizes your request, so theoretically I have very little "footprint" on Google
As I understand it, Google (says that it) tunes your search results based on your previous searches. So in theory our results should NOT be the same but reflective of our individual biases and preferences. I'd be very surprised if we all got the basic liberal pablum

Many years ago I was going to use a pump sprayer to clean my engine - for spraying on the degreaser (in that case, something like formula 409, but I forget exactly) - and I went to Ace for a replacement, since my original mysteriously failed. Where I was informed that an ordinary pump sprayer doesn't have o-rings and seals designed for solvent/ petroleum-based products, and that I'd have to get something suited for spraying on stuff like agricultural oil, instead of the normal kind of sprayer. Ace really does have helpful hardware folk.
Anyway, using the wrong kind of product in a sprayer can damage the sprayer. Who knew?

Seriously, I'd just buy the Round Up pump while your at it and save yourself the hassle of getting all gloved up to rinse the old one out. I ain't kidding when I tell you how good it is. You'll probably want to throw your other one away and buy a separate pump for the other stuff too. I'm cheap as shit, but this was one of those really lucky buys where I just happened to force myself to shell out the extra $5 bucks and I felt like I got $100 back immediately on the purchase.
But yeah... if you can get the killer on Amazon, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Best stuff I've used.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense. You're not even supposed to leave gasoline in your trimmer or leaf blowers either because the gas will literally eat holes in the fuel lines. Ask me how I know.
I knew you needed a special one for Bleach though. They say Bleach on them. :)

Cold as hell when I went out to pick up my new glasses and ran for groceries, even though it was 41 degrees outside. Felt like it was in the 20's or below with that wind.
The good news is, most of the leaves that were on my lawn already blew off. Had a bunch that managed to blow over my roof from the damn trees across the street somehow. But the wind pretty much put them all in a single spot up against my back porch door, so it only took me a few minutes to pick it all up. Not supposed to put them in the trash cans, but I don't care. If I put them out on the curb they would have just blown onto somebody else's yard.

You don't do anything today up there in Canada, do you Brenda?
I got my day planned out tomorrow. My new computer fan came in the mail, direct from China. It's the exact same make and model that came in the computer over a decade ago, but HP doesn't support rigs that old. It was a really high priced touch screen destktop/laptop hybrid thing my brother gave me years ago when it crapped out on him. With a little TLC and a crappy old laptop hard drive that I velcroed into the innards where it used to have a full sized HD that died, I got her working again for me pretty nicely. I think it had Windows Vista when my brother got it. I don't think it was old enough to have XP on it, but I could be wrong about that. She does Windows 10, but is definitely showing her age with the increased demand of the internet these days.
My little 3-in-1 fix turned out to only be a temporary bandage on the situation. Most of the time it's okay, but one day it got loud enough that I went and ordered one. It's really been fine ever since, but now I've got no excuse. I still have thermal paste from the last computer I fixed, so I'm going to get the whole thing down to the CPU, clean it all real good and put some fresh paste and the new fan in there.
That alone should speed it up quite a bit I would think. Especially during summer (not that that matters much right now around here).
But I also got a great black friday deal on a 256GB SSD hard drive yesterday. That will be the first one I've used in a computer. It's extremly highly rated by over 500 people. It claims to be "up to 10 times faster than mechanical hard drives". I'm not sure how legit that claim is, especially since a lot of other brands only claim 3 to 4 times faster, but from everything I've read I should see a significant performance boost once I've installed it.
I'll probably benefit more than most people by doing it too, because the only drive I had that was 250GB at the time was a crappy old laptop drive that my brother had taken out of an old laptop. Since day one a S.M.A.R.T. test spit out a few yellow warnings on it. I have no doubt that it's only 5400RPM (Maybe even less... I never really tinkered much with laptops). There's no way it was 7200RPM.
One of the big things that was making me resistant to doing this before, besides the pricetag, was not wanting to re-install everything from scratch. Without going into boring detail, I have quite a bit of stuff that is installed and set up for one of my projects that I had put nearly a year into on that drive. All of the data is backed up elsewhere, for sure, but part of it is a Windows based program with all of its pre-configurations. It's been a LONG time since I worked on it, and to be honest I forget a lot of stuff if I haven't worked with it for a long time. I didn't want to just have that sitting on a drive outside of the computer and lose all of those configurations.
But now that the price is right, with a little research I found out that cloning drives is a snap these days. The last time I did anything with that it was some serious work to get it done right if you weren't making an exact clone of a drive on a matching make model and size hard drive. It might take a bit longer to clone mine since the rig itself is pretty outdated, but I shouldn't have any problems cloning the drive and firing it right up after I install it.
Since it's a pretty proprietary system and the memory is maxed out and there isn't any way to put a better processor or GPU in there, this is the last thing that really can be done to get her up to speed. She's nearing the end of her life, but I thing I'll probably breathe a few more years into her with this.

All done shopping, and it worked out better than I ever would have imagined.
Upon further looking, I was able to get legit pine trim for only roughly 50 cents more per board than the MDF bullshit (that I started thinking was probably a really bad idea with the humidity in my house during the summer with no A/C).
Freaking wild discounts here. Figured I bought the 4 1/2" base trim for about 46% of regular price.
But then I found it. The 3 1/4" window and door casings. Only 3 bucks compared to the normal $8.99 per board! 1/3rd the normal price! I bought 10 more than I needed. I'll probably do the two remaining windows that weren't done on the first floor at some point for a fraction of the cost.
All solid pine. All comes primered.
Total cost for more than I even needed in the first place?
Around $200 bucks and change. Puts me over the hump to get the credit back on my card and will end up costing me about $15 for everything, which is around what the tax is costing me.
Saved about $360 in what it would have cost me at full price with taxes thrown on...
So yeah. That's how I just got about $560 worth of stuff I need for the remodel for $15.
I'm not sure if I can get the 11% rebate on items that were this steeply discounted, but the next time they have the "11% off everything sale" I'm going to ask for the 11% price match and give it a try and send it off.
That will be another $24 and change back my way if it works, and that will essentially be a bunch of free pre-primered wood sent my way at a net profit on my end of around $9 bucks.
I didn't even have to use my rebates yet. Actually, I couldn't since you can't use them online. I'm going in sometime this weekend for their 3 day sale. I'm going to buy some paint I'll be using at some steep black friday discounts with them.
Oh yeah... I forgot.
I measured the biggest "holes" at the end of the floor where the hardwood didn't butt up close to the wall. None of them are over 1/2", and unlike the 1/2" width of the MDF, the Pine is all 9/16", so I won't even have to spring for the rounded pieces either.

I have very little family on the west coast, so we do the restaurant thing where they serve a nice meal and I don't have to cook or do dishes. Went there, thought I would have to park a half-mile away and walk in the rain and then wait 40 minutes, but a car pulled out real close to the door on my second circle around the parking lot, and we waited less than 10 minutes to be seated despite the huge crowd at the door (I have no idea how THAT happened!) and had a nice relaxing time.
Then we went back home where hubby had set up a fire in the fireplace and just relaxed and chatted and had some eggnog and brandy and an extra piece of pie. What a nice evening!!
Holiday is over. Back to work for me!

The storm came thru in two waves. The first was supposed to drop 1.8" but only manaaged to squeeze out a measly 0.5". But the second was only supposed to drop about 1" but dumped approx 2.5". I'd call that a great start to the rainy season. We have four days of clear weather ... I'm going to try re-spraying the weeds today and see if it has any effect before the rains come. I'm also going to tarp part of the yard and see how that works.

I just won Black Friday.
I went up there to pick up my trim but wanted to do some shopping for deals first. Spent about another $40 on miscellaneous blades, adhisives and caulks that were all discounted around 50% or more. I also bought about 170 feet of premium insulation for my porch and the leftovers will go in the basement bedroom before I finish it. After rebates, that will only cost me 1/3rd of what I paid today for it.
So, after paying with my previous rebates, after I get my new rebates in the mail and I get my new credit card bonus, I will have gotten $750 worth of stuff I need for the house for around $30.
Even better, if I'm able to get the 11% price match rebate on all of that when it becomes available in the coming weeks, I just might end up getting all of it for free.
My new hard drive was already delivered by the time I got back too. I'm going to relax the rest of the day and get my computer up to speed.

Man... I was batting a thousand...
My drive just finished "cloning", and it wouldn't boot.
I've never used this (free) software before. It looks like I may have just cloned the C:\ drive instead of the entire thing. There is also a 500MB system partion and a 500MB Restore partition.
It took 5 or 6 hours to clone the main drive. Only about 2 minutes to clone each of the other two, but now it just hangs on booting. I'm assuming the program isn't smart enough to move things around and put that system drive where it needs to be so the PC knows it's supposed to do something but it doesn't know where to start.
Oh well... at least I had the foresight to test it out before I ripped the damn thing apart. I'm going to see if there's a way to fix this now to save me some time, but I might just have to let it run overnight instead.
Just went through my rebates and got them ready to go. Glad I asked for the price match one. Went through my old receipts that I hadn't sent in yet and it included that $110 extension cord among some other stuff. An extra $15 to $20 back that I wasn't even planning on after I send those in tomorrow.

As to the weather we where I am are being threatened with a bit of snow again on Sunday. If it happens the Santa Claus parade will be cold and nasty in Vancouver. Good thing I do not go to such things.

But I seem to have caught my second wind and I figure that resigning myself to re-cloning the drive because I did it wrong is throwing in the towel, and I'm not going to do that unless I waste the next 3 or so hours not getting anywhere first and it would just make sense to let it go and just re-clone it while I'm sleeping.

Turkey day doesn't mean much to me now since my Mom and Stepdad moved out of state. That used to be a big family party with all of his kids and their families as well as my brother and sis-in-law and niece. Now they all just do things with the other sides of their respective families.
I can always go with my old man and Stepmom to see her family for Thanksgiving, but that's a 4 hour trip one-way, and I really have no interest in being in a car 8 hours in a single day.
That's cool though. We all get together for Christmas still, and my two youngest brothers who moved out to the east and west coasts come in for that, so I'm always looking forward to that one.

Nothing so dramatic Kiki.Decided to clear out an photo album that my mom kept post cards in and found a couple that were sent to an Uncle of mine. My dad must have found them in amongst my grandmother's papers after she died and meant to give them to his brother my Uncle but just never did. So it will be up to me to see that they get to my cousin. Also found a letter or 2 that my Uncle sent to my grandmother. My dad was a bit of a pack rat for whatever reasons he had. So now that both my parents are gone, I am just starting to re-go through things that were sort of gone through when they both died.
Also found a bit more jewellery in something that I was going to donate to another bag of donations. I think most of it will be donatable but I need to go through it and make sure there isn't anything that I want out of it.

Anyways Trump made a gaff today at a rally, I think it was. He was suppose to say stock market and he said, "Sock Rocket." He gave a lift to a little company in Calgary Alberta that is owned and run by a couple of brothers.
