Putin Moves to Shore Up Power as Medvedev Resigns
Vladimir Putin proposed constitutional changes that could enable him to wield political power after his presidency ends, as his longtime ally, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, unexpectedly resigned.
The changes laid out by Mr. Putin on Wednesday would limit the power of a potential successor after 2024, when he is required by law to step down. He also proposed boosting the role of the State Council, which he already heads.

Saudi Arabia (or, to help T's under standing, Saudia Araba) is even more in a pinch. Russia can break even with ~$25/bbl. Saudi Arabia needs ~$85. It launched an all-out war dropping the price and upping production to squeeze out more marginal players, but it can't keep that up for very long. Russia can smile and outlast Saudi Arabia for years.

No kiki, Saudi Arabia is driving the low prices. It hurts russia because most of their economy comes from oil. The Saudi's can do this because it cost next to nothing for them to retrieve or drill the oil.
This oil war is actually designed to hurt American oil and will, but our economy doesn't run on oil. Low prices are good for all here except the oil market. That is who the Saudi's are targeting.
Your post is ridiculous. It is so because it's pro russia and not based in fact.

In a carefully scripted appearance, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia agreed he should be allowed to seek two more terms
It looked as though Vladimir V. Putin had been gearing up to push through obscure constitutional changes as a surreptitious way to remain Russia’s leader after presidential term limits forced him to step down in 2024. But on Tuesday, Mr. Putin endorsed a proposal stunningly simpler and more brazen: resetting the Constitution’s term-limit clock to zero.
The proposal, passed by the lower house of Parliament just hours after it had been introduced, would allow him to serve for an additional two six-year terms when his tenure expires.
The legislation must still be approved by Russia’s Constitutional Court and a nationwide referendum in April. But in Russia’s tightly controlled political system, the choreographed flurry of events on Tuesday was the clearest sign yet that after 20 years as president or prime minister, Mr. Putin, the 67-year-old former KGB spy and icon of strongman rule, is intent on staying in the Kremlin possibly for the rest of his life, or at least until 2036.
If he serves until then, Mr. Putin will have held the nation’s highest office for 32 years, longer than Stalin but still short of Peter the Great, who reigned for 43 years.

Vladimir Putin is making plans to be president for life.
In an abrupt — if not totally shocking — move, Russia’s State Duma (its lower house of parliament) proposed a constitutional amendment on Tuesday that would reset presidential term limits to zero, allowing Putin to run again for president in 2024, when his tenure is supposed to expire.
Putin, it turned out, disagreed with the idea of getting rid of term limits altogether. But on the issue of whether his own term limits should be reset to zero, believe it or not, he was into the idea.
“When a country is going through such upheavals and such difficulties,” Putin said in a speech to legislators on Tuesday in favor of the term-limit reset amendment, “stability may be more important and must be given priority.”
He went on to say that “for [the] long term, society must have guarantees for the regular change of power,” adding, “This is why I do not believe it is viable to delete the restriction on the number of presidential terms from the Constitution.”
In other words, this might not always be a good idea, but it’s a good idea for Russia right now. “I have no doubt that the day will come when the supreme, presidential power in Russia will not be so personified, if I may say so, that it will not be connected to a certain individual,” Putin said.
That day, however, is not today.

Russia, like the rest of the world, is bracing for the coronavirus and the economic pain that comes with it. On top of that, Moscow is currently in a spat with Saudi Arabia over oil prices, threatening a key source of revenue for the Kremlin.
Some experts told me Putin is betting that, in the face of these looming crises, he can easily sell his extended leadership play as necessary for stability, and that Russians — and the rest of the world — might be too distracted to worry all that much about Putin’s machinations.
He basically said as much in his speech to the Duma. “I think and I strongly believe that a strong presidential vertical for our country, for Russia, is absolutely necessary,” Putin said. “And today’s economic situation, as I have just pointed out, and the situation in other spheres, such as security, is another reminder.”
That helps explain why he seems to have suddenly abandoned his previous plan to stay in power behind the scenes.
“There has been this whole dance of introducing some kind of elaborate schemes and setups to extend the rule,” Maksym Eristavi, a research fellow at the Atlantic Council, told me.
“It was all because there was no window of opportunity,” he added. “And now there is one because of the virus, because of the crisis, because of the rising instability. He’s very skilled at seizing opportunities.”

Just a day after confirming that it would jack up production by about 2.5 million barrels per day starting April 1 in a battle for market share with Russia and US producers, state oil company Saudi Aramco said it would increase its "maximum sustainable" capacity by 1 million barrels to 13 million per day. In other words, the Saudis are digging in for a war of attrition.

Coronavirus has taken on a political dimension for the Russian leader: Putin announced that a nationwide referendum on constitutional amendments scheduled for April 22 has been postponed until further notice.
"We'll evaluate the situation and based only on the recommendations from doctors and specialists we will decide on a new date," Putin said.
It's hard to understate how important that vote was to securing the Russian president's hold on power. Putin has grasped the reins of power in his country for two decades, but his current term ends in 2024, leaving Russia with a potential succession crisis.
Putin's system of managed democracy means that power flows from one man: The president has no serious political competition, his friends and allies control the commanding heights of the economy and Putin is the ultimate arbiter of disputes between elites. The current constitution requires Putin to step down after his current term, meaning that the system he presides over could quickly unravel.
The April 22 vote was supposed to remedy that, in typically Putinesque fashion. The country's rubber-stamp parliament rammed through amendments to the constitution that could pave the way for the president stay in power after his current term ends, potentially until 2036. Putin signed the amendments, and the constitutional court endorsed the proposed changes, which must now be put to the popular vote.
Coronavirus, then, is a new political battlefield for Putin.

Russian officials once touted their success in holding off the virus. Now cases are rising as their statistics are being questioned.
The recent speed of the government response may in part be due to recognition that the virus is, in fact, spreading throughout the country. While official figures remain low, evidence is emerging that that reality is more severe, with many cases of the virus being misdiagnosed as other ailments. A report published last week by RBC, a Russian business newspaper, found that Rosstat, the country’s official statistics agency, has recorded an increase of 37 percent of cases of “community-acquired pneumonia” in January as compared to January 2019, which could fit similar symptoms to the coronavirus. Such an increase would represent nearly 2,000 cases.

Why is Russia reporting so few COVID-19 cases? Some say it's a cover-up
According to the count released by its health ministry, Russia currently has only 253 confirmed cases of the virus. That is vastly lower than in other major countries in Western Europe, where there are already thousands of cases.
What really makes Russia an outlier, however, is the number of tests it is carrying out compared to its number of positive cases. Russia has done 133,101 tests, putting it behind only China, Italy and South Korea.
But with just 306 cases of the virus, Russia’s ratio of positive cases to the number of tests is the second lowest in the world, at 0.21%. Only the tiny United Arab Emirates comes lower at 0.11%, based on figures from the Our World In Data project at Oxford University.
NYC now 'epicenter' of coronavirus crisis, mayor says; 258 dead in US
That number is puzzling, not least for a country of Russia’s vast size, with a population of 144 million and a long border with China. For example, the U.K. has done 64,600 tests and has over 3,000 cases. In Norway, 44,000 tests have turned up 1,700 cases.
“If they have done that amount of testing, it is remarkably low,” Paul Hunter, a professor of health protection at Britain’s University of East Anglia, told ABC News. “But clearly there are both suspicious and non-suspicious explanations for that. I would be very pushed to say that data is false based just on the numbers.”
But in a country where the state has a long history of hiding bad news from its citizens and the outside world, the anomalous figures have triggered suspicions of a cover-up. No solid evidence has so far emerged to support that theory, but even officials have begun to sound the alarm that the official numbers cannot be trusted.

Doctors in Russia are accusing the government of covering up its coronavirus outbreak and denying them protective equipment
A doctors' union in Russia accused authorities of disguising the extent of the country's coronavirus outbreak.
The head of the Alliance of Doctors trade union said in a video that officials were classifying coronavirus deaths as pneumonia deaths.
The video also alleged that doctors were being made to treat patients without protective gear, risking spreading the virus further.
Hospital officials have strongly denied the claims and suggested that the union leader was trying to discredit the medical profession in Russia.
So far, Russian officials have said there are about 250 coronavirus infections and one death in the population of about 145 million.

Wow. You must really dislike the question, which you obviously can't answer! Otherwise, why would you resort to threats of trolling just because you can't answer a simple question?
And btw - spreading around a question that might make people think even more badly about you than they already do, AND being even more of an asshole at the same time ... isn't the best tactic in the world. It's not going to make people think worse of ME, that's for sure!
For the record, the question is:

MOSCOW, June 16 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin is protected from the novel coronavirus by a special disinfection tunnel that anyone visiting his residence outside Moscow must pass through, the state-controlled RIA news agency reported on Tuesday.
The special tunnel, manufactured by a Russian company based in the town of Penza, has been installed at his official Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow where he receives visitors, it said.

Jack, I mostly ignore you as you follow me around the different threads so you can troll me and what I post. This time however, I will respond directly to you.
We have years’ worth of threads showing comrades sig and kiki swooping in to deflect away criticisms of Putin and Russia. Those threads contain you doing the very same. Just as you are now.
Either you too, are not really American, or you hate to the extent you betray the country of your birth. You are two-faced, unfaithful, unpatriotic, and untrustworthy.
I also think you’re a coward. You’re afraid of the world Jack. Your posts reveal that. You’re a person who strongly identifies with your own uneducated perspectives and interests. Ignorant white boy interests. Especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of our allies. Our allies Jack. Those countries that join with us in determining how the world should advance towards its betterment. Those allies who help to keep us safe Jack.
That plays right into the hands of the authoritarian leaders who wish to usurp our world leadership status. To place themselves into our lost position of power. Those who wish to do us harm Jack. That is traitorous. You’re just a stupid ignorant white boy racist bigot. I’m ashamed we come from the same culture.

The UK will freeze assets and place travel bans on officials from Russia, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, and North Korea in a new plan to target 'thugs and despots'
The UK will slap sanctions on dozens of alleged international human rights abusers including senior Saudi Arabian officials and figures with close links to the Kremlin, the government has announced.
Punishments on 49 individuals from Russia, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, and North Korea include asset freezes and travel bans.
Those named on the UK list include 20 Saudi nationals who the Foreign Office say were linked to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, including Saud al-Qahtani, who was a close adviser to Mohammad Bin Salman.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the new plan would target "those with blood on their hands."

The Trump Campaign Accepted Russian Help to Win in 2016. Case Closed.
“Cooperation” or “collusion” or whatever. It was a plot against American democracy.
By The Editorial Board
The editorial board is a group of opinion journalists whose views are informed by expertise, research, debate and certain longstanding values. It is separate from the newsroom.
Aug. 19, 2020
From the start, the Trump-Russia story has been both eye-glazingly complex and extraordinarily simple.
Who is Oleg Deripaska? What’s the G.R.U. again? Who owed what to whom? The sheer number of crisscrossing characters and interlocking pieces of evidence — the phone calls, the emails, the texts, the clandestine international meet-ups — has bamboozled even those who spend their days teasing it all apart. It’s no wonder average Americans tuned out long ago.
A bipartisan report released Tuesday by the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee cuts through the chaff. The simplicity of the scheme has always been staring us in the face: Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign sought and maintained close contacts with Russian government officials who were helping him get elected. The Trump campaign accepted their offers of help. The campaign secretly provided Russian officials with key polling data. The campaign coordinated the timing of the release of stolen information to hurt Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
The Senate committee’s report isn’t telling this story for the first time, of course. (Was it only a year ago that Robert Mueller testified before Congress about his own damning, comprehensive investigation?) But it is the first to do so with the assent of Senate Republicans, who have mostly ignored the gravity of the Trump camp’s actions or actively worked to cast doubt about the demonstrable facts in the case.
It’s also a timely rebuke to the narrative that Attorney General William Barr has been hawking since before he took office early last year — that “Russiagate” is a “bogus” scandal. Mr. Barr and other Trump allies claim that the Russia investigation was begun without basis and carried out with the intent of “sabotaging the presidency.” That argument has been debunked by every investigative body that has spent any time looking into what happened, including the nation’s intelligence community, Mr. Mueller’s team, the Justice Department’s inspector general and now the Senate Intelligence Committee.
In fact, the committee report, which is nearly 1,000 pages long and is the fifth in a series examining Russian interference in 2016, goes further than Mr. Mueller’s investigation.
For example, Mr. Mueller declined to say whether Mr. Trump had lied under oath when he said that he did not recall speaking with Roger Stone, his longtime aide and confidant, about WikiLeaks, which released the batches of emails stolen by the Russians. But the Senate committee found that the president “did, in fact, speak with Stone about WikiLeaks and with members of his campaign about Stone’s access to WikiLeaks on multiple occasions.”
The committee documented that, on Oct. 7, 2016, Mr. Stone received advance notice of the impending release of the “Access Hollywood” tape, in which Mr. Trump brags about sexually assaulting women. In response, Mr. Stone made at least two phone calls arranging for WikiLeaks to release stolen internal emails from the Democratic National Committee.
The report also found that Konstantin Kilimnik, a longtime business associate of Mr. Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was a Russian intelligence officer, and may have been linked to the Russian military’s hacking and leaking of the D.N.C. emails in the first place.
Mr. Trump and his allies will parse and prevaricate forever. Ignore them. If it wasn’t already overwhelmingly

Russian Media Is Rooting for Civil War in America: ‘The Worse, the Better’
https://www.thedailybeast.com/russian-media-is-rooting-for-civil-war-i
n-america
There is no shortage of local topics that interest the Kremlin—from the poisoning of an inconvenient dissident, to the events in neighboring Belarus and the ongoing battle against the coronavirus. In the thick of it all, America remains front and center of the Russian state media’s steely focus. In Putin’s Russia, U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s rallies, events and press comments are viewed and reported with maniacal obsession.
Russian state media happily poked fun at the Trump campaign’s use of a stock photo of Russian-made fighter jets, but aside from an occasional jab, Moscow’s coverage of the Trump presidency closely resembles that of Fox News. State-controlled media’s slant is a telling indicator of the Kremlin’s leanings. To imagine the relationship between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his massive media apparatus, one may reference the coziness between Sean Hannity and Trump—and magnify that intensity tenfold, with directives flowing only from the top down. Obsessed with retaining his dominance and fully realizing the power of propaganda, Putin leaves nothing to chance.
Russian lawmakers, state media experts and pundits on tightly-choreographed TV shows openly reveal that the Kremlin is still rooting for Trump. But Moscow has a growing concern that this time around, their preferred candidate might lose. Appearing on a state TV show The Right To Know, Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of the Kremlin-funded propaganda networks RT and Sputnik, said about Trump’s chances of re-election: “I think Trump will lose, but then I think there will be a major blow-up from the standpoint of accepting or not accepting the outcome of the election. They’ll be battling over that for a long time, who knows how it might end.”
Trump's boss wants him to murder even more people than he already has.

A newly discovered laptop, the FBI, a trove of emails, October, a presidential election—it sounds familiar. Especially when you add in a Russian disinformation campaign. On Wednesday, the New York Post released what it hailed as a bombshell: an unidentified computer repair store owner in Delaware had come to possess a laptop that contained Hunter Biden emails (and purportedly a sex tape), the hard drive and computer was seized by the FBI, the store owner at some point passed a copy of the hard drive to Rudy Giuliani, and one of the emails suggested that Hunter, who served on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma, may have in 2015 introduced a Burisma official to his dad, Vice President Joe Biden. The story depicts this as a big scandal, and Guiliani tweeted, “Much more to come.”
But the key point of the article was predicated on false information that Giuliani has been spreading for a long time—and that appears to be linked to a Russian disinformation operation that the Post neglected to note in its article. That is, the Post piece, based on an unproven smear, is in sync with Moscow’s ongoing effort to influence the 2020 election to help President Donald Trump retain power. (The FBI and other parts of the US intelligence community have stated that Vladimir Putin is once again attacking the US political system to boost Trump.) And this story presents a challenge to the American media: how to report on an orchestrated campaign to affect the election that relies on disinformation, salacious and sensational material, and the revival of allegations that have already been debunked.
The bad faith animating the Post story is demonstrated by its open embrace—in the first sentence—of a demonstrably false narrative and by its failure to report Giuliani’s association with a Russian intelligence agent who the Department of Treasury has accused of interfering in the 2020 election.
