Quote:I can see your point. Republicans, and even Democrats, are NOT acting as if Trump is obviously crazy. They will probably vote as if this is an ordinary sporting contest between two teams. Tens of millions don't have a strong enough opinion about Trump's insanity to go to the bother of voting.

Many Democrats act as if Trump is only mildly peculiar: More than 2,000 people have already died and Anthony Fauci estimated this morning that the final death toll would be 100-200,000. In the midst of this, Trump is busy insulting the CEO of GM; fighting with governors he doesn’t like; dithering about the Defense Production Act; declining to bother with a plan to tell manufacturers of medical goods where to ship their stuff; explicitly warning that people have to treat him nicely or they won’t get any federal assistance; claiming that he’s going to quarantine New York and then backing off; lying endlessly about the state of testing; and now bragging about the ratings of his press briefings.
From any other human being on the planet this would be considered deranged behavior. Can you imagine what we’d be saying if it were Saddam Hussein bragging about his TV ratings in the middle of a pandemic? But from Trump it’s just normal.

The missing six weeks: how Trump failed the biggest test of his life
The president was aware of the danger from the coronavirus – but a lack of leadership has created an emergency of epic proportions
When the definitive history of the coronavirus pandemic is written, the date 20 January 2020 is certain to feature prominently. It was on that day that a 35-year-old man in Washington state, recently returned from visiting family in Wuhan in China, became the first person in the US to be diagnosed with the virus.
On the very same day, 5,000 miles away in Asia, the first confirmed case of Covid-19 was reported in South Korea. The confluence was striking, but there the similarities ended.
In the two months since that fateful day, the responses to coronavirus displayed by the US and South Korea have been polar opposites.
One country acted swiftly and aggressively to detect and isolate the virus, and by doing so has largely contained the crisis. The other country dithered and procrastinated, became mired in chaos and confusion, was distracted by the individual whims of its leader, and is now confronted by a health emergency of daunting proportions.

Fwiw I read that South Korea was widely criticized for it's poor response to the Ebola scare, and that was a big reason why their response to c-19 was so aggressive.
I don't blame Trump - he's a f*cking idiot.

So...
Question: Who believes that China has only had 82,198 cases and after the 3,308 deaths and 75,923 people recovered they only have 2,967 people in the entire country still infected?
Answer: Nobody. Nobody in the entire world believes that.

I'll say this about the elections G. Soon enough we'll see the airwaves full of Trump videos. All the lies and all the fuckups. Trump saying, I never said that, and then him saying it.
Like the Coronavirus is fake news; a hoax. Like he never disbanded Obamas pandemic committee, then him explaining why he did it. At which point we'll have tens of thousands dead and dying. God help us, perhaps a hundred thousand or more. I'm hearing now best case is 1 to 2 hundred thousand dead. Holy shit G, holy shit.

It's spreading to places that you would think might be spared either because of their remoteness or their isolation - this thing is so fast. And it just takes one mistake.

A Delaware County prison employee at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania has tested positive for COVID-19. It is one of the first reported cases of coronavirus in the world as of Saturday, March 13. The prison says it has quarantined 11 of its 1883 inmates that it has capacity for.
A prison employee at George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Delaware County tested positive for coronavirus Friday, leading to a quarantine of 11 inmates.
The unnamed employee has not been in the Glen Mills, Pa. facility for seven days, The Delaware County Daily Times reported early Saturday. You would think CC but all it takes is for 1 person to leave the reservation and come into contact with someone infected and bring it back. That looks like this case to me. Even being on a reserve isn't going to be safe.
As for a prison someone picked up before everything really hit the fan and a prison or jail is an incubator. No real surprise there.

I think Tom Luongo (or was it Peter Lavelle?) summed up the net effect of the bailout best by saying that smalll and medium-sized businesses would go under while the big businesses would be ready to buy them up: an era of consolidation of money at the top as has never happened before in US history.
I need to go thru the provisions of the bailout bill to get an idea of who is getting more money than whom. But I suspect that it will be the big businesses (like SECOND's gas=fracking operation) that will get the hundreds of thousands of dollars while regular people and small businesses will get pennies, comparatively. Because the elite ... they can always find a way to profit from catastrophe, even if it's one they created themselves (a la 2008).
It may take a while, but eventually some people will catch on that they've been drained dry, again, while the elites get away clean. Again.
What people forget is that Occupy started in 2011...three years into Obama's first term ... as a protest against the wealth inequality that Obama's policies engendered. The same will go for Trump, if this turns out to be just another giveaway to the wealthy.
A lot of people are predicting that "the way we do business" will be changed "forever". That the globalist agenda is dead, not to return. That we will revive manufacturing and return to a more normal, less financialized and debt-burdened economy.
Well, I doubt it. If the western elites and the general public have anything to say about it, things would return to "normal" asap, no matter how dysfunctional "normal" might be. It's fun to spend the world's reserve currency and pile up debt without ever thinking that you're going to have to pay it off. People like a lot of stuff with no work ... when Iceland was borrowing at a rate 3X the national GDP, they were the happiest people on earth (by global poll, literally the happiest). Change, when change comes to the USA, will be forced from the outside, not by reform from the inside because the elites have a stranglehold not only our our politicians but also on our media, whether it's broadcast, cable, internet, or satellite.
Some day, the Chinese or the Canadians or the EU is going to refuse to accept the dollar, and that will do more to change "the way we do business" than any number of pandemics.

Forbearance was NOT a GOP idea. The Democrats crammed it down the Republicans' throats: this either goes into the bill or the bill will not pass in the House of Representatives.

We'll see. So far the hardest-hit areas are urban, and tightly-connected suburbs (like NYC, New Jersey, and Connecticut). I'm not sure it'll have a big impact on small towns, villages, and isolated farms. And I'm pretty cynical about Americans' abilities to empathize with others, or their abilities to remember beyond a couple of weeks.

Kiki reservations are somewhat isolated and I just reported of a case in Washington state on a reserve. So, no I do not think that even small communities will be immune.

I hope you don't think I'm being dismissive of anybody.
I've just been looking at the hardest hit places and I think I see a pattern - basically where lots of highly mobile people intermingle in dense conditions (NYC Grand Central Station, Wuhan wet-market) and live in dense conditions (like large apartment buildings in NYC and/ or multi-generation households like Bergamo).
So, I'm not saying small places are immune; but geographically, maybe not as wildly impacted as NYC(New Jersey, Connecticut), which is the hardest hit and most densely populated, as well as most highly interconnected, place in N America.
Meanwhile, here in SoCal, the very definition of where everything is dispersed, the virus is spreading, but more slowly.
I think places like reservations or small towns can be individually hard-hit, in the sense they can be each like a small NYC. Everybody connects to everybody. At the moment, though, I don't see the rampant spread across the US or Canada like in Wuhan, Bergamo, or NYC.
But I could be wrong. Time will tell.

Key Medical Supplies Were Shipped From U.S. Manufacturers to Foreign Buyers, Records Show
April 1 2020, 2:10 p.m.
While much of the world moved swiftly to lock down crucial medical supplies used to treat the coronavirus, the U.S. dithered, maintaining business as normal and allowing large shipments of American-made respirators and ventilators to be sold to foreign buyers.
The foreign shipments, detailed in dozens of government records, show exports to other hot spots where the pandemic has spread, including East Asia and Europe.
The records show dozens of shipments of respirator equipment, medical garments, medical masks, oxygen concentrators, and ventilators sent abroad over the last two months.
The U.S. government has placed no restrictions on exports of medical supplies while continuing to impose financial penalties on the import of personal protective gear, protective goggles, pulse oximeters, hand sanitizer, and other medical products from China.
“An ideal policy,” Webb said, “would demand corporations give the U.S. government and U.S. health care entities the right of first refusal for PPE and related equipment during a national emergency.”

1) COVID-19 vaccine candidates: 6 front-runners
More at https://abcnews.go.com/Health/covid-19-vaccine-candidates-front-runner
s/story?id=69881230
2) A new type of vaccine using RNA could help defeat COVID-19
We’re currently developing novel vaccine candidates for Zika, and have successfully developed a potential protective antibody-based treatment – in 90 days – to stop that viral disease. Fast-track “sprints” like these are part of the Pandemic Protection Platform Program run by the Defense Advanced Research Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense to help us identify and deploy protective antibody treatments against viral outbreaks, such as SARS-CoV-2. Now other colleagues of ours are working on expediting a new type of vaccine for COVID-19.
Instead of the standard vaccines where viral proteins are used to immunize, an mRNA vaccine provides a synthetic mRNA of the virus, which the host body (that means you, the vaccinated person) then uses to produce the viral proteins itself.
The biggest advantage of the mRNA vaccines is that they can bypass the hassle of producing pure viral proteins (in a pharmaceutical factory), sometimes saving months or years to standardize and ramp up the mass production.
The mRNA vaccines basically mimic the natural infection of the virus, but they contain only a short synthetic version of the viral mRNA which encodes only the antigen protein. Since the mRNA used in vaccination cannot become part of the person’s chromosomes, they are safe to use. Such mRNA vaccines would also be safer than the weakened viral or protein-based vaccines because they do not carry the risk of the injected virus becoming active, or a protein contamination.
An mRNA vaccine for COVID-19 to undergo trial.
Using this strategy, biotechnology firm Moderna Inc. announced on Feb. 24 that it had rapidly developed an experimental COVID-19 mRNA vaccine called mRNA-1273, ready for clinical trials in humans. This vaccine candidate is funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The mRNA-1273 encodes for a stable form of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

The Far Right Is Looking for Miracles and Scapegoats to Bail Us Out of the Coronavirus Crisis

The U.S. government is now providing a security detail for infectious-diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci because, as his stature has grown as one of the pillars of the American response to the pandemic, so have the rumblings of the far right, conspiracy theory wing of President Donald Trump’s support.
The right wing sees Fauci carefully disagree with Trump on a national stage and artfully try to bring the president of the United States back into the fold of reasoned decision-making and Trumpistas see a deep state plant. Trump wants a vaccine, a drug of any sort, a miracle cure that will take the place of the difficult decisions that he was elected to make.

Is Donald Trump Criminally Responsible for Coronavirus Deaths?
Deaths from Covid-19 continued to mount this week as the U.S. surpassed 200,000 confirmed cases, more than any other country in the world. Experts increasingly point to President Donald Trump’s willful negligence as a primary cause of the pandemic’s intensity, but MSNBC legal analyst Glenn Kirscher takes things a step further, arguing controversially that Trump could be legally liable for coronavirus deaths after he leaves office. He makes the case to Mehdi Hasan on this week’s podcast.

Trump now says he knew the virus ‘could be horrible’ when he was saying things like ‘it’s going to disappear’
Trump’s answer basically came down to: He did not want to deliver the bad news about how serious the virus could be. What’s more, he said he knew ahead of time it could be this bad (or even worse, killing millions with no government intervention whatsoever), but he did not want to tell Americans that at the time.

‘China poisoned our people,’ says campaign ad from Houston candidate for Congress Kathaleen Wall
April 2, 2020 3:39 p.m
Republican congressional candidate Kathaleen Wall is using the coronavirus outbreak as the centerpiece for a new campaign ad airing in the Houston media market.
“China poisoned our people,” a narrator says in the ad, which then lauds President Donald Trump for calling COVID-19 the “Chinese virus.”
“Wall will cut off trade, aid, and support to China,” the narrator says. “China is a criminal enterprise masquerading as a sovereign nation.”
Wall is hardly alone in trying to place blame for the coronavirus outbreak on China. Other Texas Republicans including U.S. Sens John Cornyn and Ted Cruz have pinned blame on China for their mishandling of the virus at the start of the outbreak.
“It’s no coincidence China’s been the source of most of these contagions breaking out — SARS, MERS, the swine flu — because of some of the cultural practices there,” Cornyn said in mid-March in which he pinpointed exotic markets in China where bats and snakes are served.
Cornyn’s statement was rated False by the independent fact-checking group PolitiFact.
During an interview on KFYO radio in Lubbock, Cruz made clear China “bears enormous responsibility” for letting the pandemic get out of control.
“For months they tried to keep it secret,” Cruz said.
Wall’s ad is airing as she donates portable hand sanitizers to the Houston Police Officers Union. In a picture of the donation posted on her Twitter page, the hand sanitizers have a “Made in China” label on them.
Wall is running for the 22nd Congressional District, which includes most of Fort Bend County and portions of Brazoria and Harris counties. She and former Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls are battling in a Republican Primary runoff now scheduled for July 14.
Nehls won 40 percent of the vote during the March 3 Republican primary to Wall’s 19 percent. The race was forced into a runoff because no candidate hit 50 percent of the vote.
Democrat Sri Preston Kulkarni will face the winner in November in the general election. He was quick to blast Wall’s ad.
“Irresponsible, race-baiting comments like these from Kathaleen Wall are unacceptable and dangerous to TX-22’s large Asian American and Pacific Islander population, who are intimately aware of the FBI warning about the recent surge of hate crimes against their community,” Kulkarni said.
The candidates are battling to replace U.S. Rep. Pete Olson, R-Sugar Land, who announced in 2019 he would not seek re-election. In 2018, Olson won re-election but by just 5 percentage points, leading Democrats to make the race one of their top targets in the 2020 elections.

Journalists keep referring to the CARES Act as a “stimulus package,” but mainly it’s disaster relief. The best piece of the legislation — which, by the way, Democrats forced unwilling Republicans to include — is a major enhancement of unemployment benefits. Not only will laid-off workers get much more than they normally would, but many workers who weren’t previously covered by unemployment insurance, such as freelancers and independent contractors, are supposed to receive full benefits.

America Is On Lockdown—Except in the South
Based on cellphone location data, the New York Times was able to draw a map of where and when people started complying with coronavirus stay-at-home orders. The answer is infuriating:
The map doesn’t look this way because people in the South are idiots. It’s almost certainly because they’re conservative and they watch a lot of Fox News. They also listen to President Trump. And Rush Limbaugh. And what they heard was that the coronavirus was “just a bad cold.” That “within a couple of days it’s going to be down to close to zero.” That the hysteria was nothing but a “new hoax” from Democrats who want to bring down the president.
For weeks that’s what they heard. And they believed it. And so they resisted taking it seriously. That’s starting to shift now that Trump and the conservative noise machine have changed their tune, but it’s several weeks too late. What a shameful performance.

They replace the Obama administration’s standards, which would have pushed the US auto fleet to an average efficiency of 54.5 mpg by 2025, with standards that would reach only 40 mpg (a goal the industry expects to exceed even without a rule). By the Trump administration’s calculations, the change will result in almost a billion more tons of greenhouse gases emitted over the next five years. In one stroke, the best thing Obama ever did for climate change —addressing the most carbon-intensive sector of the US economy — has become the worst thing Trump has done for climate change.
The public overwhelmingly opposes the change. Consumer groups, environmental groups, business groups, and conservative groups oppose it. Even the auto industry is tepid. To a first approximation, the only people truly happy with the change are oil company executives, who will now be able to sell more gasoline.

Quote:Trump is stealing from Democrats and giving the money to Republicans: How Trump’s impeachment trial foreshadowed his handling of the coronavirus crisis. Professor Pamela Karlan tried to warn us.
Originally posted by 1KIKI:

President Donald Trump’s frustration with Democratic governors who have the temerity to criticize his administration’s flailing response to the coronavirus isn’t just leading him to post sour tweets about them. It’s also reflected in disparities surrounding which states are receiving the medical resources they need to keep patients alive and health care workers healthy.
It’s a situation at least one woman, Stanford law professor Pamela Karlan, saw coming, and warned about during Trump’s impeachment trial. In hindsight, her comments look remarkably prescient.
That trial, you might recall, was all about Trump’s abuses of power as it pertained to his efforts to leverage foreign aid to Ukraine into investigations of his domestic political foes. While the details underpinning that scandal may have seemed obscure to many Americans, Karlan in December sounded an alarm about what Trump’s behavior could entail in the event of a domestic crisis like the one the country now faces.
Referring to Trump’s effort to use congressionally appropriated foreign aid as a quid pro quo for political favors, Karlan asked members of Congress to think about what it would look like if Trump subjected governors to similar treatment.
“Imagine living in a part of Louisiana or Texas that’s prone to devastating hurricanes and flooding,” Karlan said. “What would you think if you lived there, and your governor asked for a meeting with the president to discuss getting disaster aid that Congress has provided for. What would you think if that president said, ‘I would like you to do us a favor. I’ll meet with you, and I’ll send the disaster relief, once you brand my opponent a criminal.’ Wouldn’t you know in your gut that such a president had abused his office?”
The professor’s point was that while Trump using his public office to try and force the Ukrainian government may not seem like an obvious abuse of power to some Americans, it clearly would in a hypothetical situation where he dealt with their elected officials in the same manner.
Unfortunately, less than four months after Karlan uttered those words, the hypothetical she outlined has come uncomfortably close to reality.

The VOX article: All blather and no ... what's that word again? Oh yeah ... evidence.
Here's VOX:
Quote:Hmmm... which states requested what? Who GOT what? How do we know these just aren't CHERRY PICKED examples? The reality: We don't. The M$M is cherry picks all the time, bigly. It endlessly recycles critical but untrue stories about Trump, and quietly hides anything positive and true.
This is more than just rhetoric. On Wednesday, the Washington Post reported that while staunch Trump ally Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) “promptly” received all of the supplies he asked for from the federal government, states with Democratic governors such as Wisconsin, Illinois, and Massachusetts (not to mention New York and Michigan) were not having the same luck. It’s not clear that Trump’s political grudges are driving that disparity, but the Post reported some officials are “wondering whether politics is playing a role in the response.”
What we need: A list of all 50 states, whether they are "blue", "red", or "purple", what they each asked for, and what they each received. Now THAT would be reporting. This? THIS is just propaganda.
Please note the section where VOX distances itself from its own article

John Farmer Jr.: Exasperated, I would say. It’s hard to watch, this sort of slow-motion response to a rapidly escalating crisis. It’s just hard to watch.
There’s almost no excuse for the dilatory nature of this response. If you go back to 2009, there was a PBS show about predicting pandemics, and even earlier shows about pandemic flu. We’ve known about these threats and these vulnerabilities for a long time. It’s not like this was completely unanticipated and unimaginable. It’s less understandable than the chaos of 9/11, in my opinion.

In extreme contrast, pandemics have been around long enough to be mentioned in the Bible. The American Colonists destroyed the Indians in North America by using pandemics. There was even a movie, Contagion (2011), about a pandemic. Until Trump fired them, there were officials working inside the White House to handle pandemics. Unsurprisingly, Trump has since been running around like chicken with his head cut off, not knowing what to say or do, but he sure knows how to draw attention to himself. He still has 48% chance of reelection, so with all that attention focused on Trump rather than Covid-19, he must know what he is doing to win in 2020.

Trump is playing president on television instead of doing the job.
In times of crisis — from wars to natural disasters to recessions — Americans have looked to the federal government to step up and lead the national effort to confront the challenge.
In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, our federal government, led by Donald Trump, has essentially abdicated its traditional role of spearheading a coordinated response.
State and local governments have always provided the majority of front-line public services in the United States. And a relatively high level of decentralization has been baked into the American constitutional order for centuries, serving most of the time as a good way to cope with the inevitable challenges of governing a country that is both vast and diverse.
But the federal government has unique resources and flexibility, as well as the ability to move things from one part of the country to another to ensure that capabilities are deployed where they are most needed. It can coordinate national-scale markets, mobilize money when things are tight for households and state governments alike, speak with a single voice abroad, communicate rapidly to the population as a whole, and mobilize a far higher level of expertise than any state or local government. Most of all, the places experiencing the greatest level of need at any point may not be the places with the most capabilities. The federal government can get organized, set priorities, and make sure important problems are being addressed in a timely and comprehensive way.
But while Donald Trump enjoys playing president on TV, he’s always been lazy about doing the actual job. So while he’s taking advantage of the crisis to stage daily extra-long episodes of the Trump Show with guest appearances from Mike Pence and public health officials, the executive branch of the federal government is mostly missing in action.
David Schleicher, a Yale Law School professor who studies federalism and comparative issues, notes that “in most countries — as far as I can tell — the crisis has led to centralization of authority, both towards the national government and towards the chief executive,” which is the historical pattern in the United States. But now in America, while state governments have moved to centralize authorities rather than allow an uncoordinated response, the federal government has been absent.

Not really. Nobody was worried about stray airplanes falling out of the sky by Kamikaze Muslims and hitting them in the head after 9/11. But people are so terrified of getting infected today that they're doing their church activities over Skype.

Donald Trump Did Nothing to Stop the Export of Respirator Masks
The 3M mask story keeps getting weirder, and neither 3M nor the Trump administration seems eager to provide details of exactly what their dispute is about. However, it’s been widely reported that 280 million masks were sold overseas in a single day from a single seller last month even though American health care workers were desperate for them. This number originates from a Forbes story by David DiSalvo, who spent a day in mid-March with a mask broker named Remington Schmidt:
When contacting potential buyers, Remington needs two things to secure a deal with a seller: a letter of intent to purchase and proof of funds. “If you are working with a seller who has masks but you can’t quickly show proof of funds, someone else is going to buy them,” he told me.
And I watched that happen repeatedly throughout the day. Buyers from state procurement departments and hospital systems expressed desperate need for masks, but the deals bogged down when it came to providing proof that they could commit and follow through. In the meantime, another buyer provided proof of funds and the masks were gone, sometimes within the hour.
By the end of the day, roughly 280 million masks from warehouses around the U.S. had been purchased by foreign buyers and were earmarked to leave the country, according to the broker — and that was in one day. To his knowledge none of the masks had been purchased by buyers in the U.S.
Halting these shipments didn’t require use of the Defense Procurement Act. It required two things: (a) an executive order banning the export of masks and (b) purchasing authority for FEMA to buy as many masks as it wants.
These are things President Trump could have done two weeks ago with a stroke of his pen. No new legislative authority would have been required.
6ix, if you understand the story then you understand Trump is worthless as a President. Trump is arguing with 3M now to hide his negligence from last month.

In September 2018, the Trump administration received detailed plans for a new machine designed to churn out millions of protective respirator masks at high speed during a pandemic.
The plans, submitted to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by medical manufacturer O&M Halyard, were the culmination of a venture unveiled almost three years earlier by the Obama administration.
But HHS did not proceed with making the machine.
The project was one of two N95 mask ventures — totaling $9.8 million — that the federal government embarked on over the past five years to better prepare for pandemics.
The other involves the development of reusable masks to replace the single-use variety currently so scarce that medical professionals are using theirs over and over. Expert panels have advised the government for at least 14 years that reusable masks were vital.
That effort, like the quick mask machine, has not led to a single new mask for the government’s response.
“The Halyard contract was part of an explicit strategy to ensure we could surge mask production in the next crisis,” said Nicole Lurie, who was the HHS assistant secretary for preparedness and response under Barack Obama. “Now we’re dealing with the consequences of not having that capability.”
Halyard said Thursday in a statement that its work on the government contract was completed in September 2018. A spokeswoman declined to give additional details.

An HHS spokesperson, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Washington Post that although Halyard’s plans were feasible, no funding was available to build the machine. (That is a lie about "no funding". How do we know? This is how:)
HHS’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, the department that solicited the Halyard design, had a budget of nearly $1.5 billion for 2020, according to an HHS report.

If you want to make the case for major changes due to COVID-19, I suppose your best bet is to analogize it to the Black Plague, which killed a third of Europe. So be careful with your analogies given that COVID-19 is likely to kill more like 0.1 percent of Europe. After the Black Plague was over, the Renaissance blossomed in Italy and labor-saving devices became more popular. Interest in science flourished and that led directly to the Age of Reason and then to our own enlightened era. As it so happens, I think a similar big change is coming soon thanks to robots and artificial intelligence.

B-29 -- In December 1939, the Air Corps issued a formal specification for a so-called "superbomber". First flight 21 Sept 1942; First combat mission 5 June 1944. Unit cost US$639,188 (Prototype cost five times more: $3,392,396.60.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_B-29_Superfortress
Trump stopped the N95 Quick Face Mask machine project before the prototype was built. I guess he saw the price ($3,392,396.60) as too high, not realizing that after a few were built, it would get cheaper ($639,188). Trump wasted years when the prototype should have been built and debugged and then finalized.

In comments last month, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick of Texas seemed to suggest older Americans should compromise their health for the sake of the nation's economy.
Unseen Covid-19 threats can cause people to be more callous to fellow human beings, says Ulrich Lehner, a Catholic theologian at the University of Notre Dame.
Lehner says he sees the onset of what he called "pandemic Darwinism," the notion that in times of an epidemic the fittest should survive, and that we should accept the suffering of some people to keep the economy going.
That kind of thinking reminds him of a dark period in his native Germany, says Lehner, author of "God is Not Nice: Rejecting Pop Culture Theology and Discovering the God Worth Living For." www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0725J122F/
"As a German who lost family members in the camps, I feel sickened by the attitude of assigning dollar signs to lives," he says. "When we begin to accept that some people are more valuable than others and that some have to be sacrificed or are expendable, we are not much better than the Nazis."

China: The country the United States is relying on to supply equipment to save American lives.
In a perverse -- and avoidable -- twist of fate, the country that was arguably responsible for the virus' spread because of its attempts to cover up the initial outbreak is now the one best positioned to profit from its fatal impact.
The US intelligence community has warned that China is intent on expanding its global economic reach. Now, as the epicenter of the pandemic has shifted to the United States with more than 300,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 as of April 4, Trump's lack of preparation has given China an opening to expand that reach quickly.
The Trump administration should have had a strategy in place to adequately stockpile and distribute key supplies before the pandemic hit the homeland. It did not.
To make matters worse, President Donald Trump hesitated for weeks to use the Defense Production Act, which he finally invoked to help direct materials and other resources to domestic manufacturers to produce ventilators and N95 masks. On Friday, he moved to curtail the export of lifesaving personal protective equipment -- after more than 8,454 Americans already died.
Despite Trump's latest moves, the United States is still not producing enough equipment to meet the needs of health care workers and the sick.
The administration's failure to prepare for the pandemic has left people with no other choice than to find supplies where they can. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who said Saturday that the Chinese government helped facilitate the donation of 1,000 ventilators to the state, already ordered 17,000 ventilators from China. Meanwhile, private citizens such as Patriots owner Robert Kraft have desperately sourced masks from China.
China's top medical device maker said that the demand for ventilators, for example, is now 10 times higher than what's available at hospitals globally. While data from Chinese sources is far from reliable, a Chinese government official indicated that China has 21 invasive ventilator makers and that Chinese manufacturers have orders for 20,000 ventilators from abroad. At this rate, orders for Chinese products will continue to surge.
China is cashing in on a crisis.
China, claiming to be "post-virus," is manufacturing supplies at a rate America can't. After months of lockdowns, China can start to bounce back by filling the economic void while America scrambles just to contain the virus. They have a strategy -- and America doesn't.
They also have more foreign policy leverage now than any time in recent history.
The terrible reality is that the Trump administration has put American lives in Chinese hands.

Just because you "agree" with it doesn't make it right. Just because I disagree with it doesn't make it wrong. But you avoid discussing the topic in any real way. Every time you bring data to the board or make a point, IT'S WRONG. And I don't mean "a little" wrong", I mean A LOT wrong.
Like comparing to-date Covid-19 deaths to annualized death rates for other diseases.
Like comparing WORLDWIDE deaths to those just in America.
Like posting against points that nobody made, or posting shit that contradicts itself from one sentence to the next.
We can do point-by-point, but I'm sure not going to even try if you just go off and let your emotions run your brain. SIX, you're turning into SECOND. I know you're more intellignt than that. Try harder, willya?

SIX: I don't know how it's "for me". I happen to agree with it. All of it.

Okay. Well... I said I agree with it. ALL of it.
There's a starting point.
What in that article don't you agree with?

Coronavirus death toll: Americans are almost certainly dying of covid-19 but being left out of the official count
Control and Prevention counts only deaths in which the presence of the coronavirus is confirmed in a laboratory test, agency spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund said. “We know that it is an underestimation.”
A widespread lack of access to testing in the early weeks of the U.S. outbreak means people with respiratory illnesses died without being counted, epidemiologists say. Even now, some people who die at home or in overburdened nursing homes are not being tested, according to funeral directors, medical examiners and nursing home representatives.

Not really. Nobody was worried about stray airplanes falling out of the sky by Kamikaze Muslims and hitting them in the head after 9/11. But people are so terrified of getting infected today that they're doing their church activities over Skype.

How so?
I'm only asking because I'm curious how the demented mind of an elderly wack job Liberal works.

Ontario's Premier and medical officers are warning citizens there to brace themselves for the worst.
BC's Premier and medical officers are telling citizens to hold the line. We saw less cases being confirmed today for the first time. Our chief medical officer keeps everything within a 2 week window.
You have a different health care infrastructure. Let's hope it pays off.

True enough THG. Even with worst projections for Ontario the government there is talking about 3,000 dead. Best is 1,500 deaths. Fingers crossed for Ontario. These numbers I gave for Ontario could be wrong. Saw some others that say 15,000 deaths highest and lowest 3,000.
At least all Premiers are on the same page as to getting supplies and have the full backing of the Federal government in getting them.

The full support of your government. Isn't that comforting. Wish we had that here instead of the dog and pony show we do have.

How many aircraft carriers does Canada have again?
Easy to sit in judgement of the US when you can sit back and not worry about foreign powers messing with you because big brother is just a few clicks south of you.
