If that's the case, the problem might still be in the "u" shaped piece of pipe right under the sink ... possibly soap or hair or both. If you haven't already, you might want to try liquid Drano or Liquid Plumber.

They couldn't have because the manager said she would set up a time for the plumbers to come in and do that.

I have snaked it about 5 or 6 times and used Liquid Plumber or Draino on it a couple of times. Didn't get much to come out but it did start draining for me then it started plugging again.

IIRC Signy had that problem at home. It was corroded waste pipes that were really narrow due to corrosion plus it made them very, very rough inside, and they caught everything that wasn't water (soap scum, grease, hair, lint etc).

IDK if you're allowed to do this there, but you might want to try replacing the p-trap with a cheap flexible (accordioned) plastic version to see if that helps. The other thing I wonder about is who you're sharing the waste-stack and vent with on the other side of the wall. In one apartment I was in, when the neighbors - who either had installed some kind of dishwasher or small washing machine - did their whatevers, and it drained - bubbles and dirty water kept coming up out of our kitchen sink drain. Your stack-mates might be putting in grease, linty water (say, from a portable washing machine), or other stuff. If cleaning out/ replacing the p-trap doesn't do it, it may be further down than you can clean, due to either bad pipes or careless neighbors, or both.

More rain heading my way.

And for right now shopping in the middle of the week seems to be the best to get groceries. A fair amount of ground meat in the grocery store today. Less on the tomato products but I got a small can of tomato paste which is what I wanted anyways and a sandwich for lunch.

You might piss off the manager if you use Draino. I had several apartments where that was a strict no-no. Draino and other cleaning products can cause serious damage depending on how the drain system is made. And it only takes one single part that is made of a material that can be damaged, obviously.

So... what I'm saying is... if you do it. Don't ever tell the management or anybody who comes in the future to work on them that you did it.

6" to a foot isn't going to do you much, but if you wriggled it around in there good it should have at least unclogged enough in the J trap to get a decent flow going.

I have a shower that I need to rod out every year or two. A foot long plastic snake doesn't do anything with that. I have a drill attachment with a snake on it that extends to 25 feet and I have to use between 15 to 20 feet to get it unclogged when I do it.

Assert yourself here. You're in a nice place. Let them know that your sink doesn't drain and keep telling them until they fix it. If they don't respond, go ahead and try some Draino. Even COVID panic isn't going to keep a landlord/manager from making an emergency fix to a major leaky pipe if it does mess something up, and there's no way they could prove you did it if it does.

There's no reason for you to have to live with that. You're new place isn't run by that horrible old woman.

Anyways said that I ran into my ex-landlady a couple of days ago and she told me there was some mail for me. I went over to the house today to pick it up and was told by her that she had returned it to the post office. This she did because I didn't drop what I was doing the day I saw her and rush over to pick it up.

Wasted trip but was nice to stop and talk to the people who run the hamburger place in the strip mall. They are a nice couple from S. Korea originally but have been in Canada for over 10years. The wife fussed over me something fierce which was nice. I was surprised to see them open but this place is their only source of income I do believe and they have 2 small children at home. So, I got my lunch there to bring home.

Flipside is that I saw three shelves of toilet paper in the local Walmart.

Hey Brenda - how does your mail system work? Here in the US, if you file a card with your local post office with your new and old address, they'll forward any first-class mail on for I think 6 months. Does your PO not do that?

Aside from having to deal with your ex-landlady's bitchiness, it sounds like you had a good time getting back with some people you knew!

Here, my old restaurant place that I've been going to for decades is totally shut down. They're not even doing take-out. Otherwise, I would have been getting meals from there to keep them in business. I hope they reopen! OTOH the owner is getting on in years. Maybe he'll just sell it and retire and relax for a change.

Yes, Canada Post does do that but it costs a few dollars. I know that I can email this place and give them my change of address which is cheaper than Canada Post. This place I think I got the mail from I don't hear from them often so just easier to email the change.

It was nice. They are real nice couple with 2 adorable children. I'm fairly certain once this is over and the next time I see the lady I will get a big hug.

I had worried about them as this place is I think their only source of income and it was a welcome surprise to see them open.

I hear ya. One restaurant I walked by today had a sign up that they will do pick up orders now as the restaurant is completely closed. There phone number is there with the menu on the door. So you just call in what you want and when it is ready go and get it. I expect them to reopen when this over.

Cool that your landlord doesn't care. I know that I had at least two leases in my life that specifically said that I was to let the management know if there were any drainage issues and I was not to attempt using Draino or any other similar products on my own.

IMHO Drano or Liquid Plumber really shouldn't be damaging to metal pipes, since acid dissolves metal but these solution are the opposite of acidic, they're basic (caustic). Well, strong base (lye, caustic) and bleach, basically. Nothing in there harmful to metal pipes, altho I can imagine it degrading the newer-style ABS. I remember the old-style crystal Drano had flakes of magnesium in it. I THINK the idea was that the magnesium would react in the water and heat up, helping to melt and saponify any grease and accelerating the hair-dissolving action.

Maybe landlords don't like Drano/Liquid Plumber because if they work with the plumbing afterward and it hasn't been fully flushed they might wind up with an eyeful of caustic liquid??? Not sure of the issue, but nice to know that your current landlord doesn't seem to mind.

The garden looks way more managebale now! There are still weeds to kill where they're growing amongst the other plants, and need to be hand-pulled.

Going to take my flame thrower out again soon, for the front. It's been a little too windy to use, altho the weather after the rain has been FABULOUS ... 60's, beautiful puffy clouds, strong (for flatlands LA) breezes... couldn't ask for better!

But the wind keeps blowing the flame out, so I've been doing indoor chores.

I am so glad that I don't have to deal with her while dealing with all of this. My stress level would be through the ceiling.

Really though... this is the longest cold I can remember having.

No fever. No loss of appetite. No fatigue. Just a runny nose, blockage and some sneezing. Not sure what day I got it, but I probably could look back through the threads and find out. Probably going on about 10 days now if I had to guess.

If it's been going on that long and hasn't gotten worse, or better, it's probably seasonal allergies.

For me, at least I got control of my breathing. I had been doing so well that I stopped rinsing and spraying my nose and taking my Advair inhaler. I had to re-institute treatments in order to breathe/sleep better. I noticed I was using my "accesory muscles" ... lifting my shoulders, bending over .... in order to draw a full breath, very characteristic of asthma. Even with the restarted treatments it's not 100% (but then it never was) but better than before.

So yeah drippy nose ... not, they say. a symptom of Covid-19. Along those thoughts ... how did that itchy rash resolve, SIX? I wonder if maybe you developed several allergies that you did't have before. That can happen, at least it did with someone I know. In addition to her face swelling up with fish. she developed allergies to their poodle.

Maybe you have a squirrel-dander allergy???

I can't rule out the possibility. To my knowledge, I've never been allergic to anything before. Although, I frequently do have some mild congestion from time to time at really any point of the year. Sneezing is a rarity for me though however, unless I have a cold, and I probably have sneezed about once or twice per day since I got whatever this was. Copious amounts of flem like I have right now is also extremely out of the ordinary too unless I'm really sick... usually after the flu when the fever breaks. The only difference this time is that everything is remaining clear and flavorless/odorless unlike the gross stuff I won't go into detail about when you're getting over something particularly nasty.

The nose isn't "drippy" or "runny". Just clogged up. The phlegm is thick. And not so much of it that it's constant either. Not much of a bother when I'm awake and able to clear it out good from time to time. In fact, I don't even really think about it during the day, but only really when I wake up in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning.

I'd have to be allergic to something in my house though. Not only haven't I gone out in the last 2 1/2 weeks other than to go to the grocery store 3 times, but I've rarely even gone outside since the weather has been so lousy. It's getting a bit warmer now, but remember I had around 5 inches of snow not that long ago.

This "cold" I've had has pretty much stayed the same. It hasn't gotten better or worse, other than the daily fluctuation. Like with most illnesses I've ever had, the congestion is worse when I wake up in the morning before I clear it all out and hardly even noticeable all day long until I'm getting ready for bed and I realize that I can't breathe that well out of my nose.

The rash has been a non-issue since I stopped eating that spice. I've re-introduced everything else besides the spice back into my diet so far other than the brown rice and the canola oil. So until I eat both of those I still can't say 100% that it was the Cajun Seasoning that caused it.

It's not squirrel related. :) I was right that I must have scared it off and it never dared return after that single night I heard it rummaging around in that hole. Not only have I never heard it again, but it's been weeks since I put the temporary patch up there and it's completely undisturbed to this day (I put it together in

Luckily for me laundry now no longer includes bus rides. Laundry room in apartment building.

But I did get in my half hour to hour walk and I did take my umbrella. Though I didn't need to use it.

Yes, I did.

It is a biiiiiig improvement. It means that I don't have to rush around to get to a bus stop and stand waiting in the rain and or the cold for the bus to get there. Get off at the laundry mat, do my laundry, then repeat the process to get back to that dump of an old place. That winter we got a lot of snow I had to call someone for help and they did my laundry at their place then brought it back to me. These people only live a couple of blocks from where I was at the time and they own their own home.

So yeah. That is one major improvement.

Yup.

I have no idea what that place is like right now and who knows how many machines that might not be working either. That place had a problem with busted washing machines. They have probably put in limits on how many people can be in the place. It isn't that big of a place. I would imagine that they've changed how they do business.

You should get yourself two of those little drain catches that are made of a metal mesh. They're really a pain to clean out, but they really don't let anything down there. At least until you get it draining proper, it might keep it good enough.

You'd want two though because they're really hard to clean out without running water and if you don't have another one down there catching the stuff that you're cleaning out of the first one than it kind of defeats the purpose. (The loose stuff that you just cleaned out shakes off pretty easy from the 2nd one).

Then again, you'd probably get away with just the one in the kitchen if you dump it after every use. I use mine in the bathroom because the sink plunger was busted out and trying to get built up hair from shaving out of it is a nightmare.

You should get yourself two of those little drain catches that are made of a metal mesh. They're really a pain to clean out, but they really don't let anything down there. At least until you get it draining proper, it might keep it good enough.

You'd want two though because they're really hard to clean out without running water and if you don't have another one down there catching the stuff that you're cleaning out of the first one than it kind of defeats the purpose. (The loose stuff that you just cleaned out shakes off pretty easy from the 2nd one).

Then again, you'd probably get away with just the one in the kitchen if you dump it after every use. I use mine in the bathroom because the sink plunger was busted out and trying to get built up hair from shaving out of it is a nightmare.

I have been meaning to get one for the bathroom sink and thinking about the kitchen. I can do that on Monday. I have one in the bathtub drain to catch hair for when I wash my hair.

This "cold" I've had has pretty much stayed the same. It hasn't gotten better or worse, other than the daily fluctuation. Like with most illnesses I've ever had, the congestion is worse when I wake up in the morning before I clear it all out and hardly even noticeable all day long until I'm getting ready for bed and I realize that I can't breathe that well out of my nose.

The rash has been a non-issue since I stopped eating that spice. I've re-introduced everything else besides the spice back into my diet so far other than the brown rice and the canola oil. So until I eat both of those I still can't say 100% that it was the Cajun Seasoning that caused it.

Well, for MOST people who have an active infection, whether viral or bacterial, they usually feel worst around 8PM. Fever is higher, pain is more intense, symptoms are just worse overall. I think altho not sure that it's related to your internal steroid levels, which act (among other things) as anti-inflammatories and really start dropping around 8PM and don't start coming back up until around 3AM.

I had to use a laundromat for a year when I had an apartment with no access to a washer/dryer. I even had a car to do it, and it sucked so hard.

I remember my friends telling me how much nicer my next apartment was, but honestly the only thing I really cared about was having a washer/dryer in the building.

Years later, I made the mistake of moving into a REALLY nice apartment. It was the nicest and newest apartment I ever lived in. But instead of having a single washer/dryer in one building with 6 units where I might not be able to do it when I wanted to, there was an entire building on the campus that had a ton of them with no wait, but the building was not connected to mine. Not so bad during the spring/summer when I moved in, but really sucked in the Chicago winters. You also had to pay per use on them instead of it just being free with the rent like the old one was. As soon as the lease was up I was out of there.

I know full well how nice it is to be able to do your laundry without bundling up and going outside to do it. I can only imagine how much worse it would be to have to walk a load there and back or take a bus.

It wouldn't surprise me if you look back on your old place and think that your new laundry situation was a bigger upgrade than not having to deal with the old hag anymore.

Warm and dry are the biggest blessings for me but everything else is just gravy.

I remember when I got the call to come and see this apartment. The manager asked me a couple of questions like the mirror in the hallway which I said could stay. Then as we were leaving, she said, "This place is yours and no one can take it away from you."

No worries Kiki. Yes, all large gatherings banned and everyone is doing the stay-at-home. All none essential businesses are closed. No hair dressers, barber shops and the like. The pier that was destroyed out in White Rock 2 winters ago is closed. Park playgrounds closed. Schools closed. Community centres, swimming pools, ice rinks. All sporting events not happening. Doctors office closed and walk in clinics are doing only by appointments if they deem it necessary that you come in.

So yeah most of my province is on lock down.

Premier of province. Premier is the equivalent to your governors says that everyone has to stay the course. Premier gave a 10minute speech tonight that ran on the news. He thanked our first responders and actually all citizens for doing their parts in this crisis. He was very calm and reassuring.

I was out for a whole two hours today. Had to go somewhere on a bus, still in my city but not within walking distance for me. Anyways lady at this office said you have to stand on the red line. I said okay but you are going to have to speak up so I can hear you. She agreed and my business was handled in a matter of minutes.

I'm just being nosy.

Here in SoCal testing is abysmally behind the realities (especially since " ===> March 21, 2020 LACounty eliminates testing on most potential COVID-19 patients."). So I have no trust in the numbers of 'cases'. And being a person-at-risk, I definitely try to protect myself by staying at home as much as possible, and when I go out, by wearing a mask, and sanitizing my hands often, but always immediately on entering the house. If one can get past this without catching anything, I hope to be in that group.

the kind that doctors and surgeon wear when they don't want to infect you, if not a full-on N95 respirator

the kind you want to wear when YOU don't want to breathe anything in!

Procedure masks provide about 65% protection, N95 respirators about 90%. If you don't have many,and must re-use

No worries Kiki. It was unnerving but I had to get to this office, so no choice. You can't get on a bus here by the front door near the driver. You get on and off at the rear doors. Seats are blocked off to maintain distance. They have signs on them not to sit. Very few people are taking the buses now because of all of this.

I think for the most my province has a good handle on testing and the Chief Medical officers for the province do briefings every couple of days on numbers as do the news outlets but they get the numbers from the government.

When I am out I am careful of my distancing. I touch nothing in the stores unless I am certain that it is something that I want to buy.

I am constantly washing my hands, very careful not to touch my face when I am out.

Went out and got my meds. Thanked the pharmacy workers. Was going to do a little grocery shopping in the Safeway that is there but once the snow flakes started I thought better of it as I had to take a bus to get there. As I ran for the bus that I saw at the stop, it started hailing for a couple of seconds.

Glad I made the bus I did my shopping near where I live and ran into one of my mah jong group. Just barely heard her calling my name as she was wearing a mask, so voice was muffled. We spoke for a few minutes at the 6 foot distance then went on our ways.

Hurricane season is coming up. Mother nature isn't going to follow any stay-at-home orders.

I don't even want to imagine what life would be like in the Superdome if Katrina makes a comeback this year. Bet they're all shitting themselves in Puerto Rico right now too.

I'm absolutely thrilled that my parents decided to uproot their retirement and move from the relative safety of the middle of Arizona to the Florida coasts of the Gulf of Mexico to help his good for nothing kid try to start a business. I guarantee that business is all but dead right now and his kid's family are nowhere to be found, leaving my folks high and dry (or low and wet) without anybody to help them out of they need it.

Meanwhile, whatever I have had seems to be coming to fruition. Without going into too much detail, things are "solidifying" and resembling more what one would expect when the fever from a flu breaks and you're left with all sorts of nastiness for a few days or more as you finish recovering, albeit on a much smaller scale.

I definitely had something. In some ways, it's reminiscent of the flu, but just without the fever, fatigue, full-body aches and pains and loss of appetite. Whatever it is, it's new to me.

AT this end, weather has been a little warmer which means dear daughter and I can get back to gardening. (Not that she wants to.) Taught her how to use the weed torch ... the thing works fine, but the jury is still out on how effective it is.

We used it on teeny-tiny little weed sprouts which prolly won't come back, but I have some sedge-like things in the back that I literally burned to a crisp - twice - and they're resprouting. Buggers sure are fire-resistant! So I think I'm going to an "integrated" approach: What I can't burn, I'll spray, and what I can't spray I'll dig.I'll look at how things look after the rainstorm coming up. I'll be able to judge the weed torch then.

The coffee trees that I so rudely separated all survived, altho some of them dropped their lower leaves since their roots hadn't grown back enough to support a full complement of leaves, so the growing tips absorbed nutrients from the older leaves. Will continue to tend them as best I can until they get robust enough to separate one more time. After that, they'll be two or three per pot, and then they can continue to grow that way, undisturbed, for the rest of their lives.

I made a new kind of turkey pot pie today. I tried to reproduce the Marie Callendar's texture, where the vegetables are meat are in a kind of chicken broth and milk custard. So I used three cups of canned milk and 2T flour plus 1T cornstarch percup, plus 1T margarine per cup and a little salt and Bell's poultry seasoning. Plus the usual diced sauteed onion, carrots, celery, and green beans (daughter cannot eat peas) and pre-prepared pie crust top. I think I got the texture right, not sure about the flavor, but I think it turned out better than other versions.

Just keep burning them down. Sooner of later all the root energy stores get used up, and they piddle off to nowhere-land.

So they say! but these little buggers have a bulblet just under the ground, they have a LOT of root energy to spare!

One thing about the weed torch: if you don't mind starting a little fire and your neighbors won't freak out ... and you have a hose handy ... the weeds you wilted and dried out last week you can burn up this week for a quick cleanup.

Tomorrow will be mowing the back lawn and selective spraying, and after that a little gutter -cleaning bc one downspout seems to be clogged, prolly pine needles. After that, the rains come and I collapse.

Yup. A bit of sneezing for a while at least a few times a day, but haven't sneezed for a day or two. The occasional cough, but I do smoke and I've been stuck inside most of the time for a while, so not necessarily from this. I just usually forced it out by forcing coughs.

Goop was clear until last night, for up to about 2 weeks. Not so much now. It's more like what you get right before you get over something.

In more productive news, I finally accomplished something I was working on a few years ago, which was part of a larger project I devoted nearly 100% of my time to for a few months when I first stopped drinking and needed a hardcore distraction from the rest of life.

It turns out, I actually got it right back then and didn't know it. I figured in my boredom right now I'd give it another shot and right when I fired it up, it worked perfectly...

I have to rewind a bit to explain what I did.

Back when my brothers and I were kids and our mom bought a ridiculously expensive PC she saw on the Home Shopping Network on a lark (our first PC right before my freshman year of HS). She never used HSN, and she never listened to our pleas for a computer before this, so nobody knows why this purchase was made, but there was never a complaint out of us.

We got some cool little Demo Discs to show off the badass Double Speed CD ROM. One of them was mostly just game demos that left us longing for full versions that we'd never get to play, but there were two full games on there. One was a pretty decent Golf simulator that we played out of boredom even though we were never into golf, but the other was a little-known Tetris clone called Gemstorm (I know I've posted about it in here during my drunk ramblings before).

While it's a cool take on the Tetris forumula, it wasn't really anything too groundbreaking or anything that hasn't been done 1000 times afterward. What was great about it though were the MIDI tracks that just really bring back that feeling of early 90's nostalgia and huge PC speakers when you hear them. (You'd have to have heard it back then to get it).

So, a project I was working on was using a program called DOSBox to make old DOS games completely playable in a virtual console on new PC systems with Windows installed (something that Windows itself is completely incapable of).

With DOSBox, as long as your PC is fast enough, there isn't any old DOS games that you can't play. But that doesn't mean that there isn't a huge barrier to entry for your average person to get them to actually work (like REALLY huge, given that it wasn't easy to set these things up back then if you didn't know computers and now you're adding the fact that modern computers weren't designed to run them), and if you're not using something called a Frontend and diligently taking notes on how you've configured everything from game to game, you will lose that work once you end the experience and you won't have a base to work off of when trying another one.

So I spent a few months with it. Not only getting a few hundred old games working by just a simple double click of the mouse, but actually improving on them in various ways. With quite a bit of work and note taking, many games that were only playable with a keyboard and/or mouse are now fully playable on a video game controller. I also took great care to make sure that from game to game similar functions like "jump" and "shoot" used the same buttons on the controller, which is something that even large video game companies rarely ever take the care to do when releasing old stuff like this. You'll have to trust me when I say that playing Commander Keen is a lot cooler on a joystick than it was on a keyboard.

I also made cool, simple little interactive launch menus for games that had multiple entries in the series. This way, rather than cluttering up the Windows menu of games with 9 chapters of an old DOS game, there is only one slot for the game to double click and then you can choose which chapter to start by pressing the number on your keyboard in the menu. This was REALLY cool to do for the old InfoCom text based adventure games, putting them all into a single entry but having multiple menus to scroll through to start Zork or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Further upping the cool factor, games that had multiple options for audio now have a DOS me

That sounds good! But unfortunately, because of all the sodium, it's off limits for me. (If I WERE to have a hot dog, though, I personally am in favor of baked hot dogs where the outside gets browned and the hot dog gets a little chewy.)

OTOH I DID just have my own lunch, which was an individually portioned and frozen crustless 'pie' made of ground turkey, onions, lots and lots of kale, potatoes (cubed into smallish pieces), feta cheese and lemon juice - and whipped eggs and ricotta as a binder. It's one of my favorite recipes!

I don't eat hot dogs very often because of their sodium levels. But I didn't want to try and find lunch out so I came home and that was quick and easy to do while I got the dishes done, so I could get off my leg.

I like the odd pot pie but your recipe has too many things in it that I can't realy eat. Like eggs, onions, cheese and lemon juice. Also not to offend but kale to me tastes like nothing when I've tried it.

Trying to figure out what to get in for my easter supper. Guess, I'll get a ham steak, some veg and a can of gravy. I know I won't be seeing anyone this year.

It's a few things that I have discovered over the years. The lemon is connected to my seizure meds. They don't like certain fruit acids like citrus.

I love chocolate but I usually eat dark chocolate. Milk chocolate I find to sweet for my tastes. I usually buy myself a marshmallow treat that is covered in dark chocolate around easter. Peeps are too sweet for me. I buy just the one because marshmellow is made from egg whites and I am allergic to eggs. I eat too msny things made with eggs and my face breaks out and I start scratching my back and neck. Not nice.

I hear you on the allergy part! I spent years itching all over, all day, every day, due to food allergies. But I didn't know what was causing my itching. When I finally got allergy-tested and found out what foods I was allergic to, and stopped eating those things, I was SO relieved to find that stopped the dratted infernal itching!

RAIN!!! here.

A very late, very unusual April storm system is passing thru So Cal. I set out my "rain gage" last night to catch the bulk of the storm and it looks like a tad over one inch fell last night, with some presumed showers over the next four-five days. Weird, but appreciated. THANK YOU, Lady Rain!

I went to clean out the one downspout that looked like it had clogged up, but hubby insisted on doing it himself because... as he says ... since I manage all the legal, financial, and maintenance matters of the house he would be SOL if I fell off the ladder. So, just in time for the rain, and it works.

Dear daughter did an awesome job mowing the lawn (we have a very slick-running push mower with very sharp blades, and a very small back lawn) and I showed her how to use a string trimmer and she did a great job edging, too, so now the backyard looks at least somewhat credible.

Went out in between the raindrops for a very short stroll with the dog, and my trusty respirator. I only saw two other people out there, we kept our distance and just waved at each other, and two of three were wearing masks. Good for them!

I've only ever seen people with masks at the grocery store. I never see anybody outside of their houses wearing them.
