I should probably put this is the recipes thread, but what the heck.

So, I've been doing somewhat large shopping trips, to minimize the number of my shopping trips overall. And, relative to what you've been going through, Brenda, since my favorite ma&pa diner is closed, and my alternatives are pizza delivery and ... uh ... pizza delivery ... I'm not eating out at all. So I've been doing more cooking in between my shopping.

I decided to nail down cream of mushroom soup, once and for all, to try and make mushroom soup as good as grandma used to make. I found a recipe that had over 300 reviews and nearly 5 stars, and made it to see how good could cream of mushroom soup be if I followed the recipe exactly. And, as they said in Jurassic Park, I spared no expense. Spared NO expense! I got the required 2 pounds of mushrooms (actually a bit more, to account for sorting, cleaning and trimming). There were enoki, cremini, button, baby bella, Chantrelle, shitake, boletus, paddy-straw mushrooms, (a lot of the variety came from a variety pack I found), plus I bought a fair bit of oyster mushrooms separately. And I was tasting as I was going, starting with gently browning mushrooms in 4T unsalted butter, Kerrygold to be specific. So far, so good. But when it was all done, I wasn't impressed. It wasn't nearly as mushroom-y as the soup I remember from home. And I think the problem was the onion and garlic the recipe called for. They sort of overwhelmed the mushroom flavor. And then the heavy cream was just too much. It puts a coating on the inside of your mouth that keeps you from tasting much.

So now I know for next time. Next time, I'll just put a small shallot (perhaps) in with the mushrooms, instead of a large onion and cloves of garlic, and instead of heavy cream I'll either use whole fat milk, or, if I want it to be richer, half-and-half.

Now on to the next part of the trial - seeing if it survives freezing!

One thing I used to loooove was cream of mushroom soup but since milk and cream is out of my diet, I haven't eaten it in years.

I picked up some ground pork and a small can of plain tomato sauce. Just added some extra salt and pepper to the sauce and of course seasoned the meat. Had some of that for supper.

I'm so sorry for stepping on your unhappy situation!

If it's any consolation, I think even after I make my adjustments, it still won't be very enjoyable. I think my grandma used a special kind of mushroom that seems unavailable. And then she was a fantastic cook. AT BEST I can make acceptable food.

So my foray will be brief. I tried. I really did. But it didn't work out.

Can you eat beef, potatoes, and bell peppers and serrano chilies? I have a pretty tasty recipe for a beef, pepper, and potato stew that's pretty spicy but SOOooo tasty! The original recipe was beef, potatoes, and long green chilies. But long green chilies are a pain to cook because you have to remove the skin, because the skin just gets tougher and tougher the longer it cooks. But I found a combination of green bell peppers and green serrano chilies (or green jalapeños) tastes the same to me.

You just mentioned something that you wanted to try and I just happened to use to love. Not your fault.

I eat beef and potatoes. Don't like bell peppers of any colour and never eaten a chili pepper in my life.

I'm a fair cook but with so many things I can't eat anymore it can be a chore.

My dad was a good cook and baker. He used to bake bread when I was in elementary school. He'd start after I go to school and it would be finished by the time I and my brother got home. Oh, it smelled and tasted soooo good.

Forgot to mention when I was in my local grocery store yesterday the firing alarm started pinging. The person making the announcement about it was too close to the microphone and was hard to understand. Finally what the person was saying came through enough for me to understand them.

Some idjit decided to smoke near the smoke alarm and set it off.

A lady wearing a mask asked me what was going on and I told her and she said, "As long as they aren't locking us in." and went about her business and I finished mine.

BUT the Easter Bunny must follow Dr. Bonnie Henry's guidelines on social distancing when delivering eggs and of course washing his paws.

Well, I think this last storm system might have brought us up to normal rainfall. They were predicting about 0.4" each day for two days, a break, and just shy of 1" on the fourth day, but I've been checking my "rain gage" and we had almost 1.5" on the first day, a little over 1" on the second day and ... as I look out the window, about 1.5" today. That will total up to somewhere in the realm of 4" or possibly a little more.

Not much snowpack, but we sure did get rain!

Signy - I had to empty my ball jar rain gauge right before the new storm because I thought it might overflow. But I got a bit over 3.25" before I did. Since then I got just about 3/4" so far with this new storm.

My total this year isn't nearly as much as usual. Usually I get +50% to +100% of what flatlanders get. This year it's only on par. But I'm not complaining! It was looking to be a disastrously dry year, and now it's only going to be merely skimpy for my area.

After such a dry winter, with this late rain I can feel the trees wriggling their roots in relief and shaking their twigs in delight and going AAHhhhhhhh.

At this end, the (probable) last storm system of the year has propelled me to indoor work. Yesterday dear daughter and I cleand the living and diningroom. Not exactly the level of a spring cleaning, (I remember my mom's spring cleaning; it was her first day off from work when she could open the windows and air out the house without freezing us to death! It was quite thorough!) but much better than we usually do. Today, I have paperwork to do.

It looks like I might have gotten about 1.25" in this storm so far (I might get some more tonight so I'm not dumping my ball jar rain gauge just yet!), and in the previous storm I got about 3.25"

So, so far, this month about 4.5". !!

So ... no more rain since my last measurement yesterday. That means this month will probably stand at 4.25" in my ball-jar rain gauge.

The last 7-8 years I've been estimating rainfall in ball-jar rain gauges. But until this lack of rain started, I used to estimate it in my trash-can rain gauge. It wasn't unusual for a storm to drop a foot or 2 of rain at a time. Now I'm measuring scant inches.

So this is the drought record April 7, 2020. I'll check it again to see if the recent storms did anything helpful.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd ... nothing to do with anything - but I went and bought 2 different kinds of beer for Flemish beef stew - a stout and an IPA since I wanted the IPA's hops' bitterness and the depth of a stout. Which left me with some extra beer, that I'll certainly drink! And when I tasted them yesterday to see how well they might do in the stew, I discovered that beer gives a faster buzz than wine even though it's lower in alcohol! Who knew? I thought - when I used to go for sushi - that the sake was so potent because it's warmed, and that might truly help it along. But I think some of the punch in both beer and sake comes from the carbonation.

Then I went out for my walk and picked up some brussel sprouts, milk and cereal.

Also bought a small bag of potato chips. I don't do that very often. I bought a small bag of salt & vinegar chips on Wednesday. They were eaten over a 2 day period.

We didn't do anything for Easter. Hubby is busy upgrading the PCs, I'm still reviewing legal docs. Yesterday dear daughter and I finally brought in her bookcase that we had sanded down last year, just to keep if from getting dustier; and moved a shelving unit which is our "mudroom" from one entryway to the other.

Not much fun, a lot of stress.

Even if I wanted to visit family today, they're all pretty much terrified and staying indoors and not getting together with anybody, except for my brother who is so far away I didn't know if my car can make it. I forgot it was Easter until I called my grams up and she wished me happy Easter. Oh well.

Started working on the house again today. I'm tired of sitting around wasting time.

Figured the answer for finding the studs in the closet without destryoing the walls. It was right in front of me all this time. Without the baseboard on yet, I could put as many holes as I wanted to down there to find the centers of them, use my 6 foot level to mark upward and install the brackets. So all 4 brackets for the double layer on the left side are installed and level. I already had an 8' wooden pole, so that will be enough to make both of those poles as well as the one for the back of the closet. All I need to do is go to the store and buy an 8' length of 1"x12" pine for the shelving.

I'm considering doing what I did in the linen closet and making it look real nice by using a router to make a really nice looking edge and then staining the wood and putting a few coats of poly on them instead of just painting them white. I'll just have to figure out what color stain I used before so it all matches.

Hopefully this week I can finish that up, patch the brad nail holes on all the existing trim and paint everything again and whenever The Coomph panic is over I can get somebody over here to help me move all the furniture where it belongs and I'll finally have a functioning closet for the first time in 8 years.

Well... that was fun.

First time buying stuff today that wasn't food. I didn't know what I was expecting. Usually DIY stores are a real relaxing place for me and I really enjoy my time there. Today I had to swim through a sea of people wearing masks and looking at everyone else all paranoid.

Glad that's over...

I decided I'm going to really do the shelves up nice, so I bought all the boards I need as well as some stain and poly. It will take a bit more work and is a little more expensive than just using the primer and paint I already had, but the linen closet looks fantastic with that additional touch and the stained wood really pops with all the white trim and doors.

I got the sheet metal that I need to patch the roof too. Not looking forward to being up on that ladder with nobody holding it again, but now that it's getting warmer I'm running out of excuses not to do that.

This is from an article in the LATimes about how wildlife is recently coming out of hiding in Yosemite.

I happen to know it's a juvenile bobcat, because juveniles have spots. And I know that because I saw one a few years ago at my former place of work here in SoCal. I was really confused about what I was seeing till I later described it to a coworker who knew more than me. (I thought it might be a bobcat, but it had spots, and that confused me. And he was born in Taiwan, too, so his knowledge wasn't long-term SoCal lore imbibed as he grew up. I wonder how he happened to find out.) It really looks like a housecat except a bit bigger, with oceles (white spots, like 'eyes') on the backs of its ears, and with a truly weather-ready coat.

It was on the hill across the street, and I watched it successfully stalk and catch one of the many rabbits that also live there.

When you can see an animal as elusive as a bobcat, it's really exciting!

She, her husband, and her family moved up from SoCal to Vancouver, BC and we were chatting by snail mail ... until pain and fatigue left me unable to do much more than work/ home/ sleep for a couple of years.

Anyway, I took a shot in the dark and emailed her last known address and wouldn't you know - she got it!

So now we're back in touch and I'm super happy!

The biggest threat to wildlife is people. The Exclusion Zone around Chernobyl has seen a resurgence of wildlife, despite the high levels of radioactive contamination.

There are many fewer planes in the sky. Many fewer cars on the road. Less hustle and bustle. Air quality is much better. Carbon dioxide emissions are lower. People are living the essential life right now: food, water, shelter. Not running off to work and to school and to the nearest restaurant for food because work has left them no time for their kids or for making dinner. No more buying fancy new cars. Empty shopping mall parking lots. Nature everywhere is breathing a sigh of relief.

I wonder if people will come out of this with an appreciation for what is essential and what isn't. I hope so. The mindless consumerism that some people engage in isn't good for them, their budgets, or the planet.

First time I went out today with a lighter coat on. So that was good.

Decided to buy a banana to eat while I was out on my walk. Also got a coffee.

Picked up some small stuff like a dark chocolate bar to refill my chocolate stash for when I am sitting at my computer.

Did something dumb at my local grocery store. I climbed up on the shelves in the ice cream freezer to read a label on a box of ice cream. From standing on the floor I couldn't see if it was something I might have wanted. Well when I got up to look at it, it was. The last box of Magnum mini-bars which are vanilla ice cream covered in dark chocolate. Very tasty indeed.

Well, I got 2 phone calls today. One from the head lady of mah jong group to sort of check on me.

The other my boss who stumbled around asking me how I am and spent 5 minutes attempting to have a conversation with me. Outside of work, she doesn't know how to talk to me.

ETA: Oh yes. My boss also mentioned that she has had to do everything around the house herself since this all started. Sorry but I cannot and will not feel sorry for her.

Also decided to sit down and watch an entire 2hour wrestling program with the sound on mute. I did this because the fill in for the second commentator is a wrestler and I don't like the dude. It was actually a little better with the sound off.

Wanted to watch the whole show because one of my favourites was going to be on in a title match. He has the heavy weight title and was defending against another guy who I don't like. Anyways long story short, my favourite won. Wahoo!!

I think, BRENDA, if your boss had been at all honest, this is what she would have said:

Hi Brenda, this is XXXX. I'm really falling behind in the housework and I could use some help. Are you healthy? Do you feel like you could come in to work on your usual schedule? Well, I finally cleared one big hurdle in our legal/finacial affairs. We had gotten a whole bunch of draft documents that I reviewed while constantly refering to the internet... remainder beneficiary? disclaimer trust? memo of intent? ... then took my questions to lawyer #2 for a phone inerview/document review to hash out how some of my concerns can be alleviated, and he gave me some really good tips. Now all I need to do is type up my comments in an email to the drafting lawyer and the ball will be in their court.

Legal stuff is NOT my forte. This was a complete and long-lasting headache for me. But I did my best ... if there's one thing my former job taught me to do it's to review paperwork for crossed ts and dotted i's... so I'm over the hump and can see the end of this paperwork.

I'd rather be gardening.

Hey Brenda - when I check the US drought monitor I always check the North American drought monitor as well. But unfortunately, the North American Drought Monitor is always at least a month behind.

As of about a month ago, you guys in BC were looking good - not even abnormally dry! And no part of Canada was in drought. So I was a little bit unhappy when you posted your fire season was starting up. Hopefully you get just enough rain to damp out the fires - but not so much your spirits get soggy!

Well, with the ball in our lawyer's court, dd and I did some weeding.

I have to say that the torching and spraying did a good job clearing out the spaces in between the plants, but now was the time for digging and raking (The avocado trees are beginning their annual leaf-fall, and BOY do they have a lot of leaves!!)

With the dead leaves raked up, we can do more torching without necessarily starting too many fires.

KIKI, those grass-like things with the little bulblets just under the soil: I burned them brutally to the ground, twice. Watched those blades turn to ash and the soil glow. Then, when they resprouted AGAIN, I drenched them with glypohsate. (Thanks SIX for the tip on where to get that. I DO have a Roundup sprayer ... it works sweet ... but I didn't want to mix glyphosate in it because I use it for other things, but ... I needed to use it to do a lot of spraying.)

Anyway, if you can believe it, those suckers were completely unfazed by the glyphosate too! So we're going to torch them... AGAIN... and maybe kill them this time!

I'm seriously considering planting that garden that Chris Martenson is always yapping about.

Zucchini, carrots, onions, asparagus (perennial), beets, and maybe peppers and basil. I already have ginormous christmas limas that have wintered over a couple of times already. No tomatoes ... dd doesn't like them, I can't eat them and hubby doesn't want them.

Congratulations on the legal paperwork!

YAY!!!

Either somebody had planted silver lace vine in my yard at some point, or it planted itself (kind of like the passionfruit flowering vine in my yard from the neighbors 2 doors down, or the abundance of little pepper tree sprouts from the neighbor's pepper tree at the other FAR end of the block). Those things are noxious to get rid of! And also resistant to glyphosate. They have tubers that go deep underground, and on top of that, any little bit left behind - leaf, stem, root, or tuber, can grow roots and start growing all over again. I used a hose to dig them up - dug down into the dirt with water flowing out of an open hose end to both dig and flush the dirt away to cleanly get the tubers and roots out along with of course the entire plant top. I did that for a couple of years.

It's easily been 12 years and to this day I STILL have the occasional sprout showing up. Fortunately they're small and shallow, and I can just pull them if I get them early enough. But some plants like silver lace vine, ailanthus, mimosa, and bermuda grass (which I'll try to finally get rid of this year) take extraordinary measures.

Like ailanthus trees I guess if you can't grow anything else silver lace vines'll do, but both are severe invasive species wherever they've landed on the planet.

It did rain here last night as the roof tops around me were wet this morning. But no rain today. Chance tomorrow then passing again until Wednesday. So we shall see.

KIKI, that fire up Squamish was a slash fire. Someone trying to get rid of brush or something but apparently this last bit it has been pretty dry up there so it got out of hand.

Hopefully that will be the only early one as the fire people on the news said tonight it is not Fire Season yet here in BC.

I had a large patch of "Bee's Bliss" groundcover sage that I decided to turn into a garden. So I've been lopping it off and pulling it out. I wasn't too worried about the bees, which LOVE these flowers in later winter/early spring, when nothing else is blooming. But now there are so many other flowers blooming the sage as a food source isn't that important to them. But I discovered, to my regret, that it was a marvellous ladybug habitat! Been tossing the ladybugs into my lima vines where I hope they'll find some aphids, but at some point I should re-make a ladybug-friendly area. All of the green stuff has been pulled up. Tomorrow I hope to bin it all up, and day following dig up the heaviest roots and bermuda grass. After that, torch the dirt and prep the soil with a compost pile that I started a few years ago. A lot of work ahead of me. But I'm sure not going to work Thursday thru next Wednesday because it will be too damn hot. So, indoor work.

I actually have a prepped kitchen garden spot, but nasturtiums have planted themselves in a riot of color and hubby and dd want to keep the flowers. I tried telling them that they'll poop out in a couple of months, but did they listen?

In process got bitten on the wrist by ... something ... which has swelled up and gotten kinda blistery and itches like crazy. It doesn't look like a brown recluse bite, but whatever it was I'm having a helluva localized allergic reaction. Nature takes her revenge!

It looks fairly tall. Can it be cut back after other things start blooming to keep it short? I was thinking of planting creeping thyme in a few spots, but I think it blooms much later even though it's naturally really short. I have oxalis which the bees love, and which blooms very early (it sounds like at the same time as bees bliss, because the oxalis is just petering out now as the Mexican evening primrose is starting blooming), but I'm hoping for more and different early bees nectaries.

I hope you find something to keep the itch at bay from your bug bite!

The Bee's Bliss IS fairly tall..up to my knees. I was looking at pruning it back severely, but I'm ripping it out for a vegetable patch instead.

It doesn't prune well. Not that it probably wouldn't come back after severe pruning, but it's ridiculously resistant even to well-sharpened pruners, loppers, and shears. (I tried all of them) It actually rips apart with your hands much more easily because the "joints" are fairly week, so keeping it in check would probably require tearing it apart by hand.

Also, hubby tried burning it in the fireplace. It wouldn't burn, not even the dried-out stuff.

I know you're burning your weeds, but I was wondering if you've ever gotten any use out of that Round Up sprayer. It's great for bug spray too.

I just sprayed a few gallons of it today around the house and the garage. I had left about 2/3rds of a gallon of it that I had in there from last year (I didn't follow the directions and I shouldn't have done that).

Sure enough, about halfway through using that old stuff the firehose went down to a trickle. When I finally opened it up after realizing I wasn't going to get it going again by shaking or banging anything I saw that there was a lot of crap built up around the hose entry and figured I screwed this one up and it was shot now.

But I was able to pull the hose out and clean it off and it works as good as new. Unlike the cheap models, this one has a little yellow plastic filter at the end of the hose and that seemed to be all it needed to keep the crap from clogging up the hose like a lifetime diet of McDonalds does to your arteries.

I'm throwing out all three of my old ones now, and I'm going to open up the second Round Up I bought last year so I have one for the bugs and one for the weed killer. These things should last me years as long as I follow the directions and clean it out by spraying straight water through them when I'm done.

Oh yeah, I posted earlier but with all the Covid-stuff I guess you missed it.

I have been using that concentrated glyphosate that you recommended. And I did have a Roundup sprayer already ... it works sweet!!!... but I didn't want to mix up glyphosate in it and accidently kill plant later when I used it for something else.

Still, the weeds around here being what they are ...

I find that the torch works more immediately but the glyphsate is more permanent, I get a lot more resprouting wth the torch. So I torch twice and spray once. The spray is really good to get close to plants the I want to keep, if I get too close with the torch it singes them. Happy with the way both are working together, it really really reduces the amount of weed-pulling.

But there is ONE weed, I don't know what it is, I mentioned this to KIKI: I torched them brutally, watched the leaves and stems turn to ash all the way to the ground. They resprouted! So I drenched them with glyphosate and it left them totally unfazed.

Nice. Do you have the model of Round Up sprayer that I sent you a while back or one of the ones that you get with a pre-mixed solution? I had one of those and I'm going to pitch it after using this one for two seasons. Its the best sprayer I've ever used.

I'm going to be using that glyphosate myself, probably tomorrow.

How much was that torch?

Not sure if it's the exact same, but very similar.
Torch was pretty expensive .. I got the 100,000 BTU model but with the "trigger grip" that lets you go from "pilot" to "flame jet". I wouldn't get anything bigger, but the trigger grip is really handy. Don't recall the exact price, but over $100. I'm sure you can find cheaper! We have a hand truck and some bungee cords that let me trail the propane after me.
