The first known suicide directly attributable to Covid-19
Quote:
Top Manhattan ER Doctor Commits Suicide After Treating Coronavirus Patients
In a shocking example of the psychic toll that those fighting on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak endure, a top emergency room doctor who treated coronavirus patients at a hospital in Manhattan has committed suicide, the New York Times reports.
Dr. Lorna M. Breen, the medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, died in Virginia on Sunday, where she was staying with family, according to her father who discussed her death with the Times.
Her father said she had described to him "devastating scenes of the toll the coronavirus took on patients," the NYT reported.
"She tried to do her job, and it killed her," he said.
Breen's father, also an MD, said his daughter had contracted the virus, but had gone back to work after recuperating for about a week and a half. Then, the hospital sent her home again, but at this point her family moved to bring her back to Charlottesville, Va.
Breen, 49, had no history of mental illness, but when she last spoke with her father, she reportedly described a horrifying onslaught of patients found DOA in ambulances, all of them COVID-19 patients.
Dr. Breen
Her father asked the NYT to "make sure [Breen] is treated like a hero," since she died doing her job and protecting this country from a devastating health care epidemic.
"She was truly in the trenches of the front line," he said. "She’s a casualty just as much as anyone else who has died."
Dr. Lawrence A. Melniker, the vice chair for quality care at the NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, told the NYT that Dr. Breen was well-respected and well-liked in their hospital system.
"You don’t get to a position like that at Allen without being very talented," he said.
The coronavirus has presented unusual mental health challenges for emergency physicians throughout New York, the epicenter of the crisis in the United States. As the paper added, while ER doctors are inured to treating patients will all kinds of grisly injuries, they're not accustomed to being at risk of infection themselves, or of passing it to their colleagues.

There were hundreds on hundreds of deaths every day in hospitals in NYC. I estimated about 70 a day in each hospital on average. That's one code ending in death every 20 minutes, day and night, every day, for weeks.
That's not to mention the over a thousand admissions every day per hospital.
Or the unknown number of DOAs flooding in by ambulance.
I imagine there will be a lot of EMTs and paramedics, doctors, nurses, and aides who'll be subject to suicide in the short-term.
I imagine a far greater number will have PTSD and be subject to suicide in the long-term.
I imagine the anesthesiologists who intubated a lot of people at great risk to themselves, if they find out later intubation was not only not helpful, it might have been harmful.

A local Nurse's story. There is a Nurse who lives a few blocks away. We got to speak to her by chance. Haven't seen her in a long time. Asked how she was doing, and she responded with tears in her eyes. She said she is overwhelmed by the hours she puts in. Her main location is PIH, where she does a 12 hr. day. She said she is often called to help out at other Hospitals, which she is committed to help other health professionals. She said she often works close to a full day with only minimal breaks. We found out that reports of cases is not talked about because the priority is to try to save lives. She said she's had to use her same mask for weeks. She takes it off, and puts its in a plastic bag, and uses it again the next day. She's exhausted. Just listening to her makes you cry. We only hear how bad it is for them in the news, but to actually hear how bad it is in reality, gives a whole new insight into the suffering, on both sides. Thank you to all the health professionals, first responder for your beautiful commitment to save others. Bless you all.

This will be like many of our recent, endless wars that chew up Americans, to be disposed later, quietly, one by one. Out of sight, out of mind.
If you weren't there, if you didn't know someone personally who it affected, it's just another story about someone else that's not real.

JACK:
Your suggestions were call them (which I do) and drive down to my brother (which I can't).
My offer for him to live here temporarily is always on the table. They were going to do it and then all of the sudden they got cold feet about it. They're afraid that he can't go back to his place if things get even worse and more locked down in Illinois. His building is nearly all senior citizens outside of him and a few other younger people with disabilities.
It probably wouldn't help him too much if he was here. At least I could make sure he wasn't going to start drinking, but he still can't go to church or really do anything. It would make the old man feel better though.
Do Right, Be Right. :)
And get other relatives to call him OFTEN.
Ask him who's in his church group.
Get THEM to call him OFTEN.
Be observant and proactive. If there's something that he's not doing now that he used to do, find a way to make it happen in some fashion.
Get him out of the house.
Read his favorite bible passages over the phone.
Yes, it'll take time and effort. You may need to go WAY out of your comfort zone and spend a HUGE amount of time and effort.
You'll need to call your relatives and get them on board.
You'll need to suss out his church. You'll need to suss out those people. You'll need to get THEM on board to call him and establish regular, reliable contact - something he can count on, besides you. (ETA: as long as they don't try and cheer him out of his rut, or try to keep up an endlessly cheery facade with the expectation he'll join them. Their conversations should engage him in immediate things that are not COVID.)
If he has a doctor/ neurologist/ psychologist/ psychiatrist you might let them know what's going on. There's always a chance his depression is partially neurology-driven and so you might be fighting against the tide without medical help.
If he's drinking, how is he getting his alcohol? Stinkin' thinkin' and drinkin' can lead him to attempt suicide. It sounds like he's in an assisted care residence. Can you find a way to interrupt the drinkin' by finding out how he's getting it? Can you enlist the residence? Because they may be able to interrupt the drinkin'.
What can he do outside of his dwelling? Does he have a hobby or interest that can take him out of his depressed rut?
Does he have a reliable routine? Can you encourage that? I remember a friend talking to his mother every day when she was depressed. : Ma, did you take your medicine? Did you eat breakfast? How are you doing for food? Tell me, what's in your frig. Did you talk with (relative) today yet? Oh really?! How's she doing? : Being depressed often means you give up on regular daily at-home routines. Reestablishing them can help.
I have far more experience with that situation than I've posted about because (for the most part) I don't intrude on other people's privacy. If I posted about my experiences, I'd be posting about those people, too, which I almost never do (as you may have noticed). But there are things you can do to help. You can't guarantee results, but you can do whatever is in your power, and there's a lot of options.
He doesn't have a routine now. I can tell that it's bad because he says even though he tries to go to sleep by 3AM he's staying up until 6 to 7AM a lot of the nights and some nights he's not even going to sleep. I told him that he's got to make a routine for himself, even if it's

Ezra Klein asked:
I was looking back at a paper you published in 2015 about preparing for pandemics. And the point you made there that was telling: We are constantly rehearsing for war against an enemy of another country. We’re constantly rehearsing as part of NATO or US military war games.
Pandemics are a well-known thing, they’ve happened throughout history. We knew one was going to come eventually. And we were not doing these pre-rehearsals. Why do you think it is that we are so much more focused on threats from each other than threats that come from nature?
Bill Gates answered:
I think part of it is that the minor epidemics we had really didn’t hit the US. If you look at the Asian countries that did well, many of them wrote down: step one, identify all PCR machines. [Polymerase chain reaction machines, used by laboratories to copy small segments of DNA.] Step two: get supplies for PCR machines. We haven’t done that in a reasonable way today, even though we have more machines per capita than anybody else.
Places like Taiwan or South Korea, because they were hit with MERS or SARS, had the playbook. They opened the playbook, they went through those steps, and it’s saved them 10 percent of GDP and immense human suffering that they took respiratory disease in a serious way.
The fact that a novel infectious disease hasn’t been in this country for so long allowed us to not think about it as a priority. I wish I’d been more successful in getting these investments made in advance. I think back: How could I have been louder, more articulate? Very little was done.

Saskatchewan will be the first Canadian province to slowly reopen.
Next will probably be BC around the middle of May. That's what Dr. Bonnie is saying. BC only had 11 new cases over a 24 hour period that was from Sunday to Monday. Hospitalizations are down as is ICU cases.
Quebec and Ontario are also looking at when certain sectors can open there. But I wouldn't expect much until maybe June. Ontario might in May. Things seem to have stabalized back there. Fingers crossed.

Some of Bill's vaccination efforts have led to serious widespread side effects, like his "flu" vaccine trial in the Philippines that caused so many spontaneous abortions and long-term infertility that many were speculating that the REAL purpose of the vaccine was to prevent childbearing, or the polio vaccine in India that left tens of thousands of kids with acute non-polio flaccid paralysis. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6121585/

News tonight Quebec has some dates for things to reopen in May. From the 4th to the 9th, retail, I think they said but only those shops that are on the street. All malls province wide are still closed. Also this is for Montreal. Then the 11th a few more things and outside Montreal. All of this of course will be closely monitored by Quebec's health officer.
Ontario has no dates yet and still looking at what can open. Don't blame either premier as both provinces took a bad hit from this virus. Also Doug Ford the premier of Ontario, his family too. His mother-in-law has contracted it.
As for BC, Dr. Bonnie is watching everything like a hawk, so we don't have any massive spikes.

Trump signaled Tuesday that he’s looking to condition coronavirus economic relief for blue states on complying with the administration’s immigration policy goals.
In remarks to reporters at a White House event with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Trump said he’d be willing to give economic aid to Democratically controlled state governments, but he wants them to do something for him first — bend their sanctuary city policies to align with the administration’s desired policy.
Trump said he was only open to helping some states financially cover losses related to the coronavirus pandemic.
“I think there’s a big difference with a state that lost money because of Covid and a state that’s been run very badly for 25 years,” he said.
He then mentioned sates with sanctuary city policies.
“We’d have to talk about things like sanctuary cities, as an example. I think sanctuary cities is something that has to be brought up where people who are criminals are protected, they are protected from prosecution,” he told reporters, despite sanctuary city policies having nothing to do with the pandemic. “I think that has to be done. I think it’s one of the problems that the states have. I don’t even think they know they have a problem, but they have a big problem with the sanctuary situation.”
Later in the day, Trump reiterated his sanctuary city comments while taking questions from reporters at an East Room event to promote the success of the Payroll Protection Program. “If it’s Covid-related, I guess we can talk about [aid], but we’d want certain things also, including sanctuary city adjustments,” he said.

Even though Trump's approval ratings concerning how he has handled the country's response to the coronavirus have dropped, those surveyed still believed he would win a second term as president. While 43.3 percent of participants in the poll believed Biden would win the election, 56.7 percent believed Trump would emerge the victor.

One more example of NOT working well: the 14th Amendment was intended to only make former slaves into new US citizens, but what it really did was to also make the children of illegal aliens US citizens. When did I say anything about it working well? Not just in my last reply, but in the entire post history I've had here.
I'd REALLY love to see evidence of that.
No...
I was simply making commentary on how much you bitch and whine when established rules don't work your way, but when you do have a chance to do something about it you don't.
I guess now is the time where I ask you for the 100th time where was Obama on the Electoral College the first two years of his presidency?
The answer to that question, of course, is he did not bring it up one single time during his presidency. Not once.
And we listened to you bitch and whine about it when Trump won in 2016. And we're going to here you bitch and whine about it when Trump wins again in November.
And then in 2024, assuming that Democrats don't really screw the pooch and somehow make it the first time that a single party had more than 8 years in my lifetime, Democrats will have control again and nobody is going to bring it up.
Because Democrats are fucking weirdos and crybabies that don't actually get anything done and wouldn't even recognize themselves in the mirror if they woke up one day and didn't have anything to bitch and whine about.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

Yes, she does. Poor woman gets so embarrassed when she's praised for her good job of handling this crisis. She's had her hair mentioned and she addressed that at a briefing because it looked different. There has been a song written for her.

Coronavirus dashboard for April 30: the US has the worst record in the world, by far
The US leads the world by far in new infections (including per capita) and deaths; and is second among significant sized countries only to Spain among total cases per capita; while several other countries, including developing country Vietnam, have brought their caseloads to zero. This is abject failure on a horrid scale.
The total US population remains under total lockdown has declined substantially due mainly to the renegade States in the Confederacy.
Number of new and total reported Infections:
Number: South Korea: ZERO (4 detected from incoming flights at airport)
Number: Taiwan: ZERO
Number: Vietnam: ZERO

It is funny how Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam don't have the turmoil fighting Covid-19 like America has. Something very inexplicable about that, but forget about it and Vote For Trump, our self-proclaimed Very Stable Genius.

Congressional Democrats are governing from the minority. Congressional Republicans don’t want the federal government to work and Democrats do.
Typically, in a crisis, the administration would be pushing to do more, do it faster, and the minority party would be deciding whether to block those efforts or attach their own ideological priorities onto them. That’s because the administration knows it will be blamed for failure. But the Trump administration has refused responsibility for the Covid-19 crisis, and it has repeatedly wanted both less funding and less authority than congressional Democrats want to give it.
“It’s the executive branch who normally takes control in a situation like this, and they haven’t,” says Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI). “As a result, Democrats have stepped into the breach to minimize suffering. There are a lot of keyboard pundits who view this as a forfeiture of leverage, and I understand what they’re saying. But we have to be very clear: They’re talking about using suffering as leverage. That is what the Republicans do, not what we do.”
The result is that instead of acting like a minority party, Democrats are using much of their leverage to force Republicans to act like a majority party. Democrats are fighting for the policies that, if they work, Republicans will later take credit for. The testing program is a good example. Democrats forced the Trump administration to accept responsibility for a national testing strategy over the White House’s objections. But if the money and the strategy work, it’ll be Trump who runs on that success in November.

It is possible this case in Nunavut came from Northern Alberta. There's been an outbreak at an oil camp, and this person could have worked there but not having shown any symptoms was allowed to fly home. Then came up positive.

That is just my theory since travel between provinces and territories is down to almost nil. It's the only thing I can think of.
The other oil camp workers who did test positive are in lockdown at the camp.
Communities that far north in Canada are small, so hopefully they will be alright and everyone this person travelled with should be notified and be in self-isolation for 14days.

New Zealand has ‘effectively eliminated’ coronavirus. Here’s what they did right.
www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/2020/04/what-new-zealand-did-right-i
n-battling-coronavirus/
If there is a bright spot in the global response to the pandemic, it is surely New Zealand. While governments worldwide have vacillated on how to respond and ensuing cases of the virus have soared, New Zealand has set an uncompromising, science-driven example. Though the country didn’t ban travel from China until February 3 (a day after the United States) and its trajectory of new cases looked out of control in mid-March, austerity measures seemingly have brought COVID-19 to heel.
The country began mandatory quarantines for all visitors on March 15, one of the strictest policies in the world at the time, even though there were just six cases nationwide. Just 10 days later, it instituted a complete, countrywide lockdown, including a moratorium on domestic travel. The Level 4 restrictions meant grocery stores, pharmacies, hospitals, and petrol stations were the only commerce allowed; vehicle travel was restricted; and social interaction was limited to within households.
“We must fight by going hard and going early,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a statement to the nation on March 14.
Like an estimated 100,000-plus international visitors in New Zealand, we were stuck. The sudden austerity could have been a cause for panic. But each day, the 39-year-old Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, or “Jaz” as she’s popularly known, made clear, concise statements about the situation to the nation, bolstered by a team of scientists and health professionals. A few days after the lockdown, she announced that instead of just slowing the transmission of the virus, New Zealand had set a course of eradicating COVID-19 from its shores, by cutting off the arrival of new cases and choking out existing ones with the restrictions. “We have the opportunity to do something no other country has achieved: elimination of the virus,” said Ardern at one of her daily briefings.

New Zealand, as a small island nation, has a long history of acting on the understanding that it has complete control of everything that crosses into it by human transport. There is no rabies, no mad cow disease or sheep scrapie or other TSEs, no African or regular swine fever ... in fact, when it comes to diseases, agricultural pests, and environmental invaders, there's a whole lot of nothings in NZ. https://www.mpi.govt.nz/dmsdocument/10466-statement-absence-of-specifi

Good for them for taking advantage of their unique geography and their long understanding of controlling imported diseases in their country, and beating SARS-COV-2!

'Once Upon a Virus': China mocks U.S. coronavirus response in Lego-like animation

Ten years from now, when economists mull the exact moment the U.S. ceded the future to China this week’s events are sure to top the list of time-stamp candidates.
This was the week, after all, when Chinese President Xi Jinping tossed another 4 trillion yuan, or $565 billion, at an economy taking devastating coronavirus blows. The 4 trillion-yuan figure will sound familiar to students of 2008 and 2009, back when Beijing threw exactly that amount at plunging demand amid the “Lehman stock.”
It worked back then. China recovered rapidly from Wall Street’s crash thanks to aggressive infrastructure spending. By 2009, China was growing 8.7% again thanks to giant public works projects—six-lane highways, bridges, ports, new skyscraper-strewn commercial centers.
Now, as Xi’s Communist Party pulls a similar play, it’s hard not to lament this week’s missteps in Mitch McConnell’s Washington.
Within the same 24 hours during which Xi’s announced a nearly $600 billion plan to build even more airports, railways and power grids, Senate Majority Leader McConnell gave the thumbs down to comparable upgrades to America’s economic hardware.

I know everything is subject to revision right now, but my governor came out yesterday and made a very long announement about a plan to re-open our state. I didn't catch all of it because I was working in another room while it was going on and missed some of it.
But outside of 3 counties in the state, a large majority of things that were closed down will be opened up to 25 to 50% capacity on May 4th, with the other three counties opening them back up on May 11th.
If I really wanted to, I could schedule an appointment and take a long drive to get my haircut on Monday if I wanted to. I'm not going to do that though because I always wait for a coupon and they hadn't been sending any out with the shutdown.
They're allowing social gatherings of up to 25 people on those dates too.
Still no bars, gyms, etc. Though they're not enforcing it by law, they are strongly suggesting that anybody over 65 years old still keep themselves at home unless absolutely necessary and to wear a mask when social distancing isn't possible.

Pow wows happen in the summer and some are connected to the rodeos that happen around the US and I think there is one connected with the Calgary Stampede which is not happening and I doubt the rodeos in the US will be going a head either.
I would imagine the numbers of tribal members at each pow wow depends on how many can get there and if only 1 tribe is there. So could be 100 people and then people from outside the tribal communities coming to see what all the hoopla is about. To buy the crafts, food and watch the dancing and listen to the drums.
So, no. I don't think so. No tribe would be willing to chance it.
The only people that will be happy this summer with the situation is the animal rights people who show up and protest at rodeos.

I think in the last 5 years the only time I really heard a lot about it is when Hillary Clinton fainted at the 9/11 memorial and was thrown into that white van back in 2016.
If this one sticks around longer I think it's going to be because the kids will remember that weird summer where everyone was wearing masks and summer break was 6 months long.

Will coronavirus change our attitudes to death? Quite the opposite
When an epidemic erupted in a pre-modern society such as medieval Europe, people of course feared for their lives and were devastated by the death of loved ones, but the main cultural reaction was one of resignation. Psychologists might call it “learned helplessness”. People told themselves it was God’s will – or perhaps divine retribution for the sins of humankind. Who are we to thwart God’s plans?
Attitudes today are the polar opposite. Whenever some disaster kills many people – a train accident, a high-rise fire, even a hurricane – we tend to view it as a preventable human failure rather than as divine punishment or an inevitable natural calamity. If the train company didn’t stint on its safety budget, if the municipality had adopted better fire regulations, and if the government had sent help quicker – these people could have been saved. In the 21st century, mass death has become an automatic reason for lawsuits and investigations.
This is our attitude towards plagues, too. While some religious preachers were quick to describe Aids as God’s punishment for gay people, modern society mercifully relegated such views to its lunatic fringes, and these days we generally view the spread of Aids, Ebola and other recent epidemics as organisational failures. We assume that humankind has the knowledge and tools necessary to curb such plagues, and if an infectious disease nevertheless gets out of control, it is due to human incompetence rather than divine anger. Covid-19 is no exception to this rule. The crisis is far from over, yet the blame game has already begun. Different countries accuse one another. Rival politicians throw responsibility from one to the other like a hand-grenade without a pin.
Some might well argue that the crisis should teach us humility. We shouldn’t be so sure of our ability to subdue the forces of nature. Many of these naysayers are medieval holdouts, who preach humility while being 100% certain that they know all the right answers. Some bigots cannot help themselves – a pastor who leads weekly Bible study for Donald Trump’s cabinet has argued that this epidemic too is divine punishment for homosexuality. But even most paragons of tradition nowadays put their trust in science rather than in scripture.
The present crisis might indeed make many individuals more aware of the impermanent nature of human life and human achievements. Nevertheless, our modern civilisation as a whole will most probably go in the opposite direction. Reminded of its fragility, it will react by building stronger defences. When the present crisis is over, I don’t expect we will see a significant increase in the budgets of philosophy departments. But I bet we will see a massive increase in the budgets of medical schools and healthcare systems.

It's been okay up here. But Vancouver has seen a spike in hate crimes towards Asians unfortunately.
The flipside of the bad is that restaurants around Vancouver and other cities have been making meals and delivering them to the hospitals, so the staff don't have to worry about going out and such.

Mid-June we are looking at dentists, barber shops, hair salons, massage therapists and the like to open on a more regular bases. And other stuff like gyms and such over the summer into September.
All of this is of course based on, that they provide a plan to the government to show what changes they have made to their business to provide a safe work environment for their staff and customers.

I am sure that once things settle down a little more, all chief medical officers in Canada that have been seen on the tv will fade into the background once again, Jack.

Yeah... I know. It probably says more about me.
I'm just picturing people walking around in Canada right now wearing T-shirts that say "I Love Dr. Bonnie".

lol...
Just for shits and gigs, I looked up "I Love Dr. Bonnie" in Google images. Surprisingly, there weren't any t-shirts that said that...
But this is 2020. We don't say things like that anymore.

No worries Jack.
And truthfully I wouldn't put something like that past some people.
I have not seen t-shirts like that at all. They are cute but they too will disappear.

It will be nice when this is all over. Everything just seems a little bit too Ministry of Truth for me these days.
I've heard there's sign language on everything right now. The few times I saw my Governor speak he had an interpreter.

It will be. I can't disagree with that.
It's hard to get this kind of information out to people with hearing problems. So the interpreters. I'm glad they are there. I don't know sign language but I still have a portion of my hearing. And you can't always count on Close Captioning as it can be slow on the screen, so having someone doing sign language keeps up with the speaker whoever they are.

OK. That applies equally to both of us, just so you know.
You're basing your beliefs on immediate statistics that may or may not be accurate, and a very limited testing pool in a very, very large petri dish. I'm basing mine in historical trends and going on several decades obvious bad journalism to the point of propaganda.

JACK and SECOND - two peas in a pod.
“We have put in place the guidelines that our experts have put forward to keep this building safe, which means contact tracing," McEnany told reporters during Friday’s news briefing. "All of the recommended guidelines we have for businesses that have essential workers, we are now putting them in place here in the White House. So as America reopens safely, the White House is continuing to operate safely.”
The careful reader will note a jarring juxtaposition here. McEnany claims both that the United States is reopening safely and that the White House is operating safely. But only one of these two — the White House — actually has the sort of testing regime the White House itself is now implicitly acknowledging is a prerequisite to safety.
The rest of the country largely lacks this level of testing — because Trump doesn’t want to take the steps necessary to stand up a robust federal testing regime.

You might feel blindsided by the coronavirus, but warnings about a looming pandemic have been there for decades. Government briefings, science journals and even popular fiction projected the spread of a novel virus and the economic impacts it would bring, complete often with details about the specific challenges the U.S. is now facing.
It makes you wonder: What else are we missing? What other catastrophes are coming that we aren’t planning for, but that could disrupt our lives, homes, jobs or our broader society in the next few years or decades?
It’s the government’s job to think about this: Every year, the intelligence community releases the Worldwide Threat Assessment—a distillation of worrisome global trends, risks, problem spots and emerging perils. But this year, the public hearing on the assessment, usually held in January or February, was canceled, evidently because intelligence leaders, who usually testify in a rare open hearing together, were worried their comments would aggravate President Donald Trump. And the government has not yet publicly released a 2020 threat report.
What would it say? Since there’s been no public version, we’ve compiled our own here, reviewing numerous government and academic reports and speaking with more than a dozen thought leaders, including scientists, researchers and current and former national security and intelligence officials.
What follows is POLITICO Magazine’s “Domestic Threat Assessment”—a list of the most significant events that might impact the United States over the next 30 to 50 years. These are threats that seem rare, but that over a given period are almost guaranteed to occur—events that politicians have a hard time understanding.

CEOs Who Came to Meet Pence in Masks Were Asked to Remove Them
Mike Pence was unmasked in Iowa on Friday, attending two events without covering his face, even though public health officials say masks slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus and one of the vice president’s aides tested positive for Covid-19 just before he departed Washington.
What’s more, a live video stream of the second event, a roundtable discussion with food industry leaders in Des Moines, showed that all five of the invited guests arrived wearing masks but were asked to remove them shortly before the vice president joined them on stage.
The request underscored just how committed the White House is to ignoring federal health advice intended to slow the spread of the pandemic coronavirus.
After the event, at which the chief executive of Smithfield Foods choked up when mentioning the death of a worker from Covid-19, the union that represents Iowa meat-packers, who have been forced back to work by an executive order from the president despite outbreaks at their plants, suggested that it would have been more useful for Pence, Perdue, Grassley and Ernst to have worked a shift alongside them. “They should work in the same conditions and under the same fear that our members and their fellow Iowans work under every day,” the United Food and Commercial Workers union said in a statement.

Large earthquakes
Hurricanes
Massive flooding
Blizzards
Volanic eruptions (including supervolcanoes)
Meteor strikes
Wildfires
Drought
Epidemic/pandemic human disease
Crop failure/disease/insect damage
And last, but certainly not least ... EMPs
And then there are manmade ones...
War, including nuclear war
Social unrest, including civil war and ethnic cleansing
Massive cyberattack on banks, the power grid, water treatment etc
Currency collapse
Sanctions which limit vital supplies like oil
The creation and failure of any part of long, fragile supply lines
Infrastructural decay or sudden catastrophic failure (power grid overload, dam collpase, road and bridge failures)

threat reports" are usually kinked ... not towards "preparedness" but how to spend more $$$ on the "intelligence community" and the MIC. They're just self-serving grabs for money and power.
Do you want to know how I know this?
Because we have been woefully unprepared at the national level for every large disaster that has occurred in the past two decades (or more) ... Katrina, the Great Recession, and the Pandemic of 2019 all caught each administration flat-footed.
Quote:Preparedness for just about every kind of disaster tends to run along the same lines...
Blah blah blah
Local and regional production, which is redundant
On-hand surplus of cash, water, food, medicine and other essential goods at the individual, city, and regional level
Decentralized power, water, transportation and sanitation grids
Specific rescue equipment at the state and national level - pumps, cranes, 'dozers, fire-fighting aircraft, pop-up hospitals, portable generators etc
Communication and pre-planning (required of CONGRESS as well) plus technical expertise
It doesn't take rocket science to figure this out. But prepardeness takes money. It requires that people be individually and collectively "inefficient" by investing in surplus and redundant production.

Sigs at it again. She argues nothing matters if it's not literally the worst thing happening or has happened. This style of argument is popular with sig who knows she is doing something wrong when applying it.
Sig is fully aware that she is covering up Trumps failures as she posts her attempts at fallacy of relative privation. Pointing to other unrelated disasters in an attempt to minimize Trumps Coronavirus response failures.
Crawl back under your rock sig. We've seen this from you a hundred times and more.

Quote:An Average American may understand, intellectually, that what he is doing is wrong, but he doesn’t feel it. He knows the words but not the music. He just don’t have the circuitry in his brain constantly and relentlessly directing him to prepare. So he doesn't. Multiply the average American by 150 or 200 million and the answer is America as it is today. Or if you think globally, multiply by 3 or 4 billion average humans and the answer is the World as it is today, unprepared and with brains unwilling to prepare. You might notice that it is not everyone missing critical brain circuitry, just the majority, and in a Democracy lifting the dead-weight of the unresponsive/apathetic/uncomprehending majority who refuse to pay for preparations can make it difficult or impossible to prepare America. The heaviest dead-weight American? Trump.
