My source tells me that Disney is in early development on a Firefly reboot. The new show would start the story of Captain Mal Reynolds and his crew aboard the Serenity over from scratch, with an aim to make this a long-running series on Disney+. There is a twist here and the twist is that they see the show as ideal family-friendly programming for Disney+. My source tells me they’re planning to target it more at a PG-adventure, family audience and less at the sort of PG-13 dynamic the original Joss Whedon show went for.

This shift in tone suggests the new version of Firefly might drop characters like Inara, who is basically a prostitute. Instead it’ll probably lean more into the fun and adventure aspect of the universe’s stories. Fans may initially be unhappy, but it’s easy to see a way it could work.

My source was unable to confirm to me whether series creator Joss Whedon is actually involved in the new Firefly reboot. Whedon has recently been embroiled in a strange controversy with some of his former actors and it’s made him difficult to employ.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of that description. If Fox wasn't bad enough at dumbing it down, Disney is going to go above and beyond and turn them all into a family comedy. That is not a recipe for success IMO.

They mention they don't know if Joss is involved. I can't imagine he would be if they're trying to remove all the grit and drama from it.

So, basically this is Firefly in name only. I'm not interested.

Disney owns Star Wars and that is action packed. Those already made play on tv all the time so who knows. Personally, I was a fan of the original and don't much care to see a new cast.

I don't mind a new cast so much, although they just white wash everyone these days and Ken and Barbie them...perfect fake hair, teeth, and boobs at alll times...

I mean that's what I liked to begin with... is that they were actual people. Pretty, but had character...

I have a HUGE issue with them taking out companions and giving over to religious extremism.

Even in the future, we're not allowed to discuss sex or have any damn body autonomy?

It appears they are also re-booting the comics with Zoe's kid... in her 20's... Captain of the ship. When you can pick a whole new crew they can be squeaky clean, sadly.

Well, there was recently an article ranking attractiveness of ships in sci fi and they rated Serenity as one of the uglier ones and were inundated with irate people, so I think they could still be irritated to death by us, I just think they are big enough to not give a damn anyway.

That being said, I've been trying to tell you about this for years now Wish.

I'm going to assume that since we're on a Firefly fan site that this show meant more to you than your average property and that is why this particular one is bothering you.

By the time Disney gets its hands on Firefly, The Goonies is going to look gritter.

If Inara is removed, or her profession is changed from that of a prostitute, that won't be because of the religious right though. That's the ever-growing powers that be consolidating and sterilizing everything.

In their eyes, Captain Marvel is Girl Power and Inara from OG Firefly is an objectified woman who is a terrible role model for girls.

Disney+ sucks for adult/mature entertainment - that's a given. It's in the business of making money, and it wouldn't be G-14ing Firefly if they didn't think it would MAKE MONEY. So spread some blame to the consumer. Besides, how did Firefly do in it's first run?

Firefly got well over 2 Million viewers per episode.

They renewed Batwoman for season 2 on the CW even after the main actress quit. The first episode had 1.8 Million viewers. The last episode had less than 800,000 viewers. The lowest watched episode just cleared 600,000 episodes.

You all know how much I liked Inara, so that would really be a shame. In a lot ways she, Simon, Kaylee, and Book were the heart of the crew - pushing people (Mal) to not fall to their darker and more base nature.

That said, she didn't look like a companion anymore in the last comic I read. Though whether those comics were "good" exactly is another story. Still, space pirates isn't a bad look - which is the only way I can think of that they could actually pull this off.

I actually hadn't heard about the brand new verse comic but I think it is an excellent idea. There's a lot of room there to bring in a fresh new cast but allow original series cast members to make stops in. But I agree, Disney would most likely ruin it. I wish Whedon or Espenson would run with the idea to one of the 800 streaming services and make something worth while out of it.

If rumors are true that they're going to change Inara's profession to a more family friendly one, there isn't any reason to believe that they're going to give any respect to the rest of the property either, and we'll probably be given some family friendly tripe loaded with agenda driven messaging that nobody is going to want to watch.

Even Return of the Jedi hits only a 7 on that list for me, and that's only because the first half was awesome before they touched down on Endor. The prequel trilogy only hovers around 4 or 5 and were already so bad I didn't even bother to watch Episode III to this day.

I think I just put childish things away a while back. Maybe Star Wars doesn't belong to us anymore. Maybe it never did. Let the kids have it. Make it as soft as it needs to be for the softest generation of kids that America ever churned out.

as for Disney...I'm thinking...thinned out version of Guardians of the Galaxy meets Firefly...they'll of course have to get the female "me too" thing ramped up..so change up the cast to make sure our gals (ooo..now there's a taboo term these days)..get to sit in the big chairs..and of course we'll have to have at least one gay relationship and those scenes will be written in no matter how it sidetracks the actual plot (see the latest star trek series nonsense)..they can hardly get a story plot started on an episode without having to cut in some gay relationship scene...don't assume I'm a homophobe... I'm talking about how they impose these issues into an otherwise perfectly well flowing story line.

I'm so depressed already...I'm not sure I could bare to watch even the pilot episode..maybe I'll be ok..if they have the female captain break into song like Aladdin's Jasmine's Speechless..and Kaylee can be a guy with Rainbow banners hanging on his wall and making eyes at Jayne and admiring his rain stick.

I have a wife and 3 daughters of my 4 kids, and 7 of my 8 are grandaughters..trust me when I say that I don't value a female soul any less than a male..that all "my girls" are fully empowered..my wife with her own business and her own hobbies, her own gun(s), scuba instructor, world traveler, my grands enjoy everything from golf, to archery, to soccer, gymnastics, dance, musicians ..and I'm there for every game, every concert, beside them to teach on my back yard range. I could type for another hour (you know how old farts can ramble) but no matter what I'd try to tell you about who I am, I'm sure I'd come up short in the measure of a man..and that, believe it or not, circles back around to the actual topic of this thread...how Disney might measure a man and woman and how they leverage the incredible gift/legacy that Walt left in their hands... Firefly , to me, was about clinging to the values of what makes us human, even as an Alliance had overwhelmed and won the day.
For all the verbosity of Serenity's movie The Operative, and no matter how sensible it sounded, at least Mal was grounded in such a fashion that he could see through the B.S. I can see what Disney does and they are far from alone in their efforts...and with that, I don't believe they can capture the essence of what drew me to love my Firefly....be well Wishy... I sure hope disney does it right but I don't have high hopes. I will watch it if it gets produced at least at first. I am not sure about the family amgle they are talking about.

Firefly was already a family friendly show, but that was back in a time where you could still be a little edgy and have that label.

They'd probably report you to DCFS if your kid was caught talking to their friends about this awesome movie called Goonies that their parents showed them at home in 2021.

I mean... think about it.

1981 saw Clash of the Titans released to theaters with a PG label and tons of bare ass and boobs on display.

In 2021 we're talking about changing Inara's profession, even though her clothes, while flattering, were never very provocative and we never once saw her in the middle doing her job.

I hav low expectationz for sifi TV seriez, so never feel disappointed and occasionally am plezently suprized.

Its nearly impossible for a Firefly reboot to be anywhere near az good az the orijinal. Too many hack directorz and riterz out there with solid employment credentialz but no talent.

My bet iz that it will be another teen-appeal tok show with special effects.

But, like bying a lottery tikit, I can afford to keep a little flikr uv hope glowing like a near zero watt green LED on indicator.
