China overtook the U.S. as the world’s top destination for new foreign direct investment last year, as the COVID-19 pandemic amplifies an eastward shift in the center of gravity of the global economy.
New investments by overseas businesses into the U.S., which for decades held the No. 1 spot, fell 49% in 2020, according to U.N. figures released Sunday, as the country struggled to curb the spread of the new coronavirus and economic output slumped.
China, long ranked No. 2, saw direct investments by foreign companies climb 4%, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development said. Beijing used strict lockdowns to largely contain COVID-19 after the disease first emerged in a central Chinese city, and China’s gross domestic product grew even as most other major economies contracted last year.
The 2020 investment numbers underline China’s move toward the center of a global economy long dominated by the U.S. — a shift accelerated during the pandemic as China has cemented its position as the world’s factory floor and expanded its share of global trade.

Bill Clinton's plan for Chinese world dominance is almost complete.
All we need now is for Biden to make environmental regulations so strict here that nobody would think of investing in American businesses and then everything the entire world uses will be made by 12 year old Chinese kids that work 80 hour weeks and go outside and choke on the Steven King-esque wall of smog outside after they punch out.
But keep on buying all that shit you don't need and pretending you give one single shit about the environment.

Quote:The Chinese (on Taiwan and the Mainland) had a big Covid-19 problem and they fixed it. Back in America, lazy old Trump said there was a small Covid-19 problem. The result was that the two Chinese run economies are doing better than ever because they handled their problem and slowed down their pandemic, while the American pandemic is running faster and faster and the American economy is running slowly and erratically.

Meanwhile, the Chinese have 42,700,000 big plans listed by google to reduce CO2 emissions and America has no plans that can get past the GOP Senators and their filibustering. Who do you think will be more prosperous? The Chinese who are working hard on their future? Or the Trumptards complaining that the Chinese are working too hard at making stuff?

Fauci and Birx tell interviewers about the 'nonsense' of the Trump years
Fauci said Trump sometimes called him to "express disappointment in me that I was not being more positive," and Trump surrounded himself "with people saying things that didn't make any scientific sense," but he always felt it was better to stay at his post rather than resign. "I always felt that if I did walk away, the skunk at the picnic would no longer be at the picnic," Fauci said. "Even if I wasn't very effective in changing everybody's minds, the idea that they knew that nonsense could not be spouted without my pushing back on it, I felt was important."

Anti-vaccine activists peddle theories that Covid-19 shots are deadly, undermining vaccination
In some cases, anti-vaccine activists are fabricating stories of deaths that never occurred.
Now, the same groups are blaming patients' coincidental medical problems on covid shots, even when it's clear that age or underlying health conditions are to blame, Hotez said. "They will sensationalize anything that happens after someone gets a vaccine and attribute it to the vaccine," Hotez said.

Yup. They fixed it by having a government run media that lied to their own citizens and the rest of the world every step of the way.
Don't worry buddy. Democrats in America are working on making that the way we do business here. Once we have the Ministry of Truth installed and zero ability to say anything online that is against the narrative, we can fix non-fatal pandemic numbers once and for all and pretend that everybody is in agreement with what the media says since nobody will be able to voice their opinions otherwise.

Taiwan to put 5,000 into quarantine over hospital COVID-19 cluster
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan will more than double the number of people who have to quarantine at home to more than 5,000 as it seeks to contain a rare domestic cluster of COVID-19 connected to a hospital, the health minister said on Sunday.
While Taiwan has kept the pandemic well under control thanks to early and effective prevention, with the large majority of its 890 infections imported cases, it has since Jan. 12 been dealing with a small number of domestic transmissions at a hospital.
While the 15 people infected so far at the hospital in the northern city of Taoyuan is small compared to many other parts of the world, it has unnerved the government, which has cancelled many large-scale events related to the upcoming Lunar New Year.
Health Minister Chen Shih-chung told reporters that they will expand the number of people who have to quarantine at home for 14 days who may have had contact with the infected patients from the hospital cluster.
He put the number at about 5,000 people, compared to around 1,300 who are currently in quarantine.
The government has been testing all of those who have been in quarantine, and has been announcing new cases amongst them as they are confirmed.
Taiwan has a well-honed system to track those who have been in contact with confirmed cases and an electronic monitoring network to ensure those in quarantine remain at home.
Despite the new infections, Taiwan only has 95 active cases being treated in hospital. The government holds news conferences to announce details of every new infection.

Compared to Taiwan, America does next to nothing and the result is that America has the crappy economy and high illness/deaths to be expected from doing close to nothing, except once the American sick are in the ICU, the hospitals go into high gear because of the money to be made. Capitalism in the medical industry is great, is it not?

The countries that brought SARS-CoV-2 under control swiftly and that have extremely low per capita deaths were the countries that had had experience with the original SARS. And that includes China, and Taiwan - along with Vietnam, Macau, and Hong Kong.
But those are communist countries and their data is highly suspect! you'll say.
Except the list of countries that brought SARS-CoV-2 under swift control also includes NZ(<1 per100k), Singapore(<1), SK(2.6), Australia (3.5), Japan(4), Iceland(8), and Norway(10); compared to Sweden(108) and the US(128).
Not everybody is lying, and not all figures are fake. There might be some blurring around the edges, but you can't mistake the US(128) for NZ(<1).

Had Hillary been president last year, the numbers would be very different and nothing would have been shut down. Our media is lying just as much as China's media is lying.
The only fallout that Biden has to deal with now is the tail end of a virus "threat" that never actually was.
Gotta try to put that shit back in the horse now is all.
Or not. Maybe they decided they like how things are going now.

In terms of total deaths per 100K, going from highest to lowest, with representative examples, it's:
Belgium(180)
Slovenia(160)
UK(148)
Czechia
Italy
Bosnia + Herzegovina
N Macedonia
US(127)
Bulgaria
Moldova
Peru(123)
Hungary
Panama
Croatia/ Spain(118)
Mexico
France
Sweden
Switzerland(106)
and so on.
Certainly there are plenty of very high numbers from around the globe. So high numbers aren't unheard of. Do you think ALL stats everywhere are entirely fictional? Or just the US?

They're all fictional.
People are being paid to call other deaths Covid Deaths. Greed certainly makes that job quite easy since most can be paid off.
Then there is always threatening somebody with their nice cushy job and letting them know they're going to lose the lifestyle they've become accustomed to, their kids won't go to those pricey colleges without enslaving them to debt for life, they will probably end up divorced and cut off from their current circle of friends when they've got to go work at WalMart.
For any new hires, let's say in the last 20 years or so, they've been informed that they signed various NDAs when they signed on to their current job, and not only will they lose their jobs and never be hireable in the only sector they're qualified to work in, but they'll be sued into oblivion if they open their mouth.
If you think that Healthcare is any different from any other corporation out there, you're greatly mistaken. They're being stuffed to the gills with cash over all of this.
"Just shut the fuck up and write Covid-19 in the cause of death spot".
And forget about other countries. Even the "free" ones aren't free. Nobody else has the US Constitution. And besides that, with how we've meddled in the affairs of the rest of the world since the 1950's, I don't think we're garnering any sympathy from anybody when our alleged death toll is twice that of the next country.
We just need a Snowden on this one. Somebody who is willing to lose everything to tell the truth.
But the problem is, the media would immediately call them a Russian Spy, or a Conspiracy QAnon nut, or dig up something they did in their past to discredit them. Or maybe simply choose not to cover it at all. It is possible that several people have come forward, but nobody knows that they have. They've lost everything, all for nothing. Maybe they even Epsteined themselves. They almost certainly did. Don't need loose ends out there with a huge chip on their shoulder now, do we?
Oh... and those suicides would, of course, be "Covid Related" deaths.

Oh, and at the end of the day, if every single Covid-19 death were somehow not bullshit, the listed known cases in the US now stands at 25,298,405... with the deaths at 421,239.
That's 1.66%. That's only 4 times higher than your seasonal flu. The human race didn't do too shabby fighting off a brand new Chinese manufactured virus without any previous immunity or any help from needles.
And there's still the possibility that 10 times as many people have it, meaning that well over 2/3rds of the country might have already gotten past it without any outside help.

Is it then? Even still, not bad considering it was "novel" and we had zero defense against it, compared to the "seasonal" flu that we all have some resistance to, assuming we're healthy.
Since I don't buy any of the numbers in the first place though, it's not even worth comparing at all.
I'm not going to get back into arguments with you about any of this. You're free to have your own opinion on this mess, and I'll do the same. You're never going to change my mind on any of it, and I'm sure that I'd never be able to change yours either.

For the next few months of the vaccines’ rollout, we face a classic economics problem: too much demand and not enough supply. But in a few months, we will have the opposite economic problem: too much supply and not enough demand. Back in December only 42 percent of Texans indicated they would sign up to get a vaccine. If a large plurality of Texans and Americans decline to get it, we may be unable to achieve the 80 percent herd immunity that public health experts say is necessary to stop the pandemic.
How would an economist solve that problem? I asked economist Robert Litan of the Brookings Institution, who says we should pay people a lot to get the vaccine.
“I think if you tell people $1,000, and then especially for a family of four — that’s $4,000 — you’re talking real money. And I think at $1,000 you could get (anti-vaccine) people to switch,” Litan said.
He also proposed that all citizens would be given, say, $200 upfront, with a promise of the other $800 when the United States achieved 80 percent vaccination.
As Litan explained: “So what that does is it gives tremendous incentives to tell your friends, whether in real life or on social media, to go out and get the shot, because then we can all get the money.”
I love his idea. It would get us to herd immunity fast. It uses “market incentives” as a carrot to induce desired behavior. The $300 billion or so it would cost would be a lot cheaper than the massive and complicated federal bailouts we’ve already resorted to.
Medical ethicists, however, hate this idea. Although small payments would be appropriate for the sake of convenience — such as transportation or a snack —the large payments suggested by Litan would be considered coercive. It is apparently not OK to ask people to choose between not putting something in their body and taking a payment of $1,000. So there are ethical limits to applying an economic or markets perspective to the conundrum of vaccine rollout.

There are guys here on fireflyfans who constantly had 'BANNED' videos
Piratesnews was one who was constantly censored for thoughts, seems youre another and i guess so is anyone who doesnt post the mainstream media narrative
They even banned a President from speaking
I would suggest not to post youtube links
Most of them seem to be blocked or adult rated or banned after 1 week
or at least back them up from another sites link such as a mirror on dailymotion, rumble, bitchute, vimeo etc
Vidlii was a youtube alt going way back but now Most of vidliis original community moved over to other sites ... maybe twitter or parler or 4chan?
Gab I think is also hosting pics and vids, LBRY about to crack the top 5000 websites
There is also bittube.tv

That's not to say America's numbers are not bad, they are terrible, the death rates are also very high alongside Europe and Central America
The virus has an incredible ability to spread , it went rapidly through a French military Aircraft Carrier, even far way places like Fiji islands, Guam, Malta, Iceland, Alaska and other distant places have been hit by the virus, maybe the only place it has yet to reach is some reseach place at the South Pole or maybe a space station
South Korea, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and some Oceania and islands are some fo the few places that have done a good job at stopping the virus although I would not trust China's media numbers.

Since the beginning it's always been estimated that the amount of undiagnosed cases is as many as 8 to 10 times what they have on record.
Not my problem if your agenda driven "news" sources are altering numbers to keep you terrified.
At 10 times, far more than 2/3rds of the country has already had Covid and recovered from it before the first needle got stuck in an arm.

Now, at some point we will run into the problem of people being unable or unwilling to get the vaccine. It will be a good idea to set up free clinics in impoverished or isolated locations, and it may be necessary to require people to be vaccinated before their children can go to school, or before they can return to work. But quite soon even young, healthy people will be able to get their shot, the fear of you or your loved ones facing a horrible death will ease up, and as cases keep falling, Americans will be able to carefully return to normal life.

The good news is, the same thing was true of smallpox - which has been globally eradicated; and is true of polio - which is on its way to being globally eradicated. And SARS-CoV-2 is very much like both those viruses, because none of them have a host reservoir in wild animals.
That makes it very much different from influenza, which is endemic in wild and domestic bird populations (it's theorized the 1917-18 pandemic was brought on the wings of Arctic geese), and in pig populations; and either of those can spread influenza to humans, OR act as recombinant vessels for avian-mammalian influenza which can then spread to humans. That's why flu can't be eradicated - to eradicate influenza globally, one would need to eradicate all strains in all birds and all pigs everywhere, wild and domestic, as well as humans.
So SARS-CoV-2 can at least in theory be wiped off the face of the planet. And it just depends how important that goal is and whether or not resources will be dedicated to accomplish it.

Smallpox and polio were deeply feared even though the infection rates and death rates were extremely small compared to COVID-19.
For example "In the United States, the 1952 polio epidemic was the worst outbreak in the nation's history, and is credited with heightening parents’ fears of the disease and focusing public awareness on the need for a vaccine.[24] Of the 57,628 cases reported that year 3,145 died and 21,269 were left with mild to disabling paralysis." In 1920 the US had a significant smallpox outbreak of roughly 111,000 cases. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1102664/smallpox-cases-in-the-unit
ed-states/ with a case fatality rate of roughly 30% https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines/smallpox , for a calculated number of 33,300 deaths.
I believe so much fear was evoked because survivors carried permanent effects like paralysis and severe scarring, including blindness due to eyeball scars. Nobody wanted to live the rest of their life in an iron lung, or scarred and blind.
The worst affected COVID-19 patients die and disappear. They don't serve as a reminder of what COVID-19 does to you. And while survivors can struggle with immediate after-effects, their struggle is invisible. And it'll take years before we grasp the long-term outcomes on hearts, lungs, kidneys, brains, etc. It'll be years before we see cardiac cripples rolling on wheelchairs with oxygen hooked up because their hearts can't sustain normal activity (for example), or pulmonary cripples, and look at them and think 'yes, that's another victim of COVID-19'.
In any case, it remains true that COVID-19 CAN be eradicated, like other select other viral diseases without an environmental reservoir, through vaccination.

Not true.

I am pretty sure its in the racoonz around my house. The few that hav shown up on my porch this winter ate little or nothing. I woct wun sniff at a cookie and leav! Racoonz, like many animalz, will not eat sumthing they cant smell. Lak uv taste and smell iz a common symptom uv C19.
Usually during the winter on warmer dayz the racoonz will be on my porch gobbling up the dog food and cookiez I put out for them to replenish their hibernation fat. I suspect many uv them may be ded now.

When it comes to animals, the question isn't 'can they get it' but 'can they infect people'. Most animals have lungs that are too small to cause any serious level of infection, for the same reason children don't seem to infect adults all that much (which, I admit, like a lot of things about the virus needs confirmation). So one would have to be very stupid with animals - lots of close contact - before one catches a virus.
That said, when it comes to the original SARS and MERS, some people are very stupid with animals.

The people who want to get vaccinated and can get vaccinated will be vaccinated. They'll be protected for the most part. After that one of 2 things will happen:
1) global herd immunity will be reached, and the epidemic will be stopped
2) global herd immunity will NOT be reached and the epidemic will become endemic, and more and more people will slowly become infected, and immune, but at the cost of more deaths and disability; and the virus will continue to mutate, perhaps making previous immunity less meaningful.
I'm guessing we'll see endemic SARS-CoV-2, globally, speaking.
That puts us at the level of smallpox and polio.
And sooner or later, enough people will become acquainted PERSONALLY with the medical effects of COVID-19 on themselves, their families, and their communities. Only when enough people PERSONALLY see enough of a problem will it become an issue.
And that's when the real vaccination effort can begin, and the globe will move to eradication.
In the meantime, have fun with non-existent COVID-19!

I like dogs just fine. I even like coyotes and spent many weeks defending them against the people in my community who wanted to go around with guns shooting at them; and pointing out that coyotes were HERE because they got burned-out THERE - in the Bobcat fire.
When it comes to JO's post, I was ONLY addressing the point that wild animals might become a reservoir for human infection.
I made zero comments about the raccoons JO feeds - which btw you have an obvious hatred for. And I made zero comments because I have no way of knowing what's going on with those raccoons. They may be really well fed, they may be fine but the air might have been too cold and the cookies too dry for them to smell, they could have gotten into rat poison, or caught either cat or dog distemper ... there are too many possibilities for me to assume they have COVID-19, or anything at all.

Quote:Jo, currently what's making the virus more infectious are 2 things: it has added different molecular 'grappling hooks' on its surface by which to attach to human cells; and because each virus does a better job infecting more cells, more people develop more serious infections with more shed virus per person.

Every organism and virus has an infectivity threshold which is how much you need to be exposed to before you become sick. So, obviously different people will fight off the infection differently, and some people's immune systems will do a better job than others. But it's a good estimate that reveals big differences between infectious agents. For example, it takes roughly 6 bacteria of E Coli O157H7 to cause an infection. It takes roughly a 1000 virus particles to be infected by Hepatitis B. It takes roughly a million virus particles to be infected by HIV. While at this point nobody has figured out (yet) how many SARS-CoV-2 virus particles does it take to become sick, there's good evidence with SARS-CoV-2 the dose makes the disease. People exposed to few virus particles become only mildly symptomatic, if they develop symptoms at all. While people exposed to higher numbers of virus particles become sicker.
As for it becoming environmentally resistant ... all viruses degrade over time in the environment. For example, Hanta virus Sin Nombre strain (excreted in deer mice urine and feces, 50% mortality rate, it's the strain found in the US) degrades to non-infectivity in about 3 days under the typical environmental conditions found in homes.
SARS-CoV-2 is a non-encapsulated virus, which means it doesn't have a nice protective lipid (fat) layer around it to keep it from drying out. That's why it's so susceptible to even mild disinfectants, like 60% alcohol ... I digress ... anyway, there are very specific conditions where SARS-CoV-2 can 'survive' longer - though at ever decreasing numbers over time - outside the body. And they are very cool to cold temperatures 32F-40F, 100% relative humidity, and landing on a non-porous non-reactive surface. That keeps them moist and in the same configuration as when they left the body. But since infectiousness depends on 'grappling hook' spike proteins having a particular configuration, and heat, lack of moisture, and interaction with surfaces all will change that configuration (the same way egg white proteins cook in a pan), unprotected, non-encapsulated SARS-CoV-2 is quickly rendered non-infectious over time in all but the most protective conditions.
So, while mentally one can extrapolate infectivity ALMOST infinitely (unless you believe in homeopathy, one needs at least 1 viable virus particle to cause an infection, which is the final endpoint of any infectivity argument), in the real world there are limits to how far virus infectivity can go, based on viral degradation in the environment, and its basic infectivity.
I don't know if I can make this more clear, but I'll try by analogy. If I can only jump 6", I might be able to train myself to jump 1'. And if I theoretically extrapolate that trend, I might extrapolate I'll be able to train myself to jump to the moon. So, obviously, there are real limits to theoretical extrapolation.

Republican Rep. Ron Wright of Texas has died, his congressional office announced in a statement Monday, saying that he had been admitted to the hospital after contracting Covid-19.
"Congressman Ron Wright passed away peacefully at the age of 67 on Feb. 7, 2021. His wife Susan was by his side and he is now in the presence of their Lord and Savior," the statement read. "For the previous two weeks, Ron and Susan had been admitted to Baylor Hospital in Dallas after contracting COVID-19."
His congressional office announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19 on January 21 with the congressman saying at the time in a statement, "I am experiencing minor symptoms, but overall, I feel okay and will continue working for the people of the 6th District from home this week."

Louisiana Congressman-elect Luke Letlow dies from COVID-19

Photos posted on social media from campaign events show Letlow sometimes wearing a mask when interacting with potential voters, but other times — including at his victory party, two weeks before his hospitalization — without a face covering as he posed for pictures with supporters.
Hailing from the small town of Start in Richland Parish, Letlow was elected in a December runoff election for the sprawling 5th District U.S. House seat representing central and northeastern regions of the state, including the cities of Monroe and Alexandria. He would have been sworn in next week.
Letlow was going to fill the seat being vacated by his boss, Republican Ralph Abraham. He had been Abraham’s chief of staff and ran with Abraham’s backing for the job.

The hospitals are incentivized financially to put Covid-19 on the death certificate, and their OWNED doctors are ordered to put Covid-19 on there if they just happened to be infected while in the hospital and actually dying of something else.
They've got deniability. The person actually did have Covid when they died of something else. And if they didn't have it before they went in for a long and possible final hospital stay, they got it while they were at the hospital.
My point regarding the "good" GOP Congressman's passing is that Second himself was just pulling this exact same shit yesterday. Presenting his death as a Covid death, yet dude was battling Cancer and Second either didn't know this or conveniently failed to mention it.

The hospitals are incentivized financially to put Covid-19 on the death certificate, and their OWNED doctors are ordered to put Covid-19 on there if they just happened to be infected while in the hospital and actually dying of something else.
MDs, DOs, and other treating prescribing professionals do, along with MEs, coroners, and pathologists.
There are roughly 850,000 active MDs alone in the US. That figure doesn't count osteopaths and other treating/ prescribing professionals who can also write death certificates.
https://www.statista.com/topics/1244/physicians/
60% of MDs alone do NOT work for hospitals. That figure doesn't count osteopaths and other treating/ prescribing professionals who can also write death certificates.
https://www.healthcaredive.com/news/hospitals-now-employ-more-than-40-
of-physicians-analysis-finds/548871/
And that number doesn't include MEs, coroners, and pathologists (who don't work for hospitals) who write or certify cause of death.
That's a LOT of people putting their professional licenses on the line to 'fake' COVID-19 for no reason at all, Jack!
And btw, a COVID-19 death is distinct from a cancer death (if it wasn't, the cancer lung' photo would look the same as the COVID-19 lung photo), just like COVID-19 is distinct from a broken leg, or high blood pressure.

The doctors are all owned by the insurance companies.
Just because somebody went to college and wears a white lab coat doesn't mean they're not owned while clocked in like somebody working at WalMart wearing a red apron.
What they're not going to risk is losing their medical license and having to trade in that white lab coat for a red apron at WalMart because they wouldn't call Covid the cause of death when it was clear the person was dying of stage 4 pancreatic cancer but also just happen to contract Covid during their hospital stay.
There is currently HUGE federal money pouring in per covid death.

Look at the headline of the article I posted about the Texas Congressman Second was calling a Covid death and forgetting to mention the fact he had cancer.
Even on a right leaning news site, they put Covid first in the headline. It should have read bouts of Cancer FIRST, and Covid second, or been worded in a way where he had a long battle with cancer and finally died after he had contracted Covid.
Dude died of Cancer. Not Covid.

Don't care about one dood, dood. Not every COVID-19 death is fake or due to something else.
Medical professionals and examiners actually CAN tell the difference between a broken leg death and a COVID-19 death.
Hospitals don't write death certificates. And the VAST majority are written by people NOT paid by ANY hospital, including the completely independent coroners etc. Insurance companies don't care what's on a death certificate, they get paid according to DRGs.
You have no factual argument, Jack.

Lancet Study Finds 40 Percent of U.S. COVID-19 Deaths Could Have Been Avoided
The British medical journal the Lancet, on Wednesday, published a damning assessment of Donald Trump’s presidency and its impact on Americans’ health, concluding that 40 percent of the nearly 500,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. over the past year were avoidable. The journal came to the conclusion by comparing the U.S. health outcomes on the coronavirus—the country leads the world in COVID deaths and confirmed cases with more than 27 million—with the weighted average of other G-7 nations. So it’s not a wildly abstract conclusion to draw: the U.S. could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives if it had just performed similarly to its economic peers.
The report assailed Trump for his response to the pandemic, but emphasized that the disastrous response to the virus's spread was the result of years of destructive public policy decisions on health that extended well beyond the Trump years. From the Lancet:
Many of the cases and deaths were avoidable. Instead of galvanizing the U.S. populace to fight the pandemic, President Trump publicly dismissed its threat (despite privately acknowledging it), discouraged action as infection spread, and eschewed international cooperation. His refusal to develop a national strategy worsened shortages of personal protective equipment and diagnostic tests. President Trump politicized mask-wearing and school reopenings and convened indoor events attended by thousands, where masks were discouraged and physical distancing was impossible.
The result, the Lancet notes, is more than 450,000 deaths where “about 40 percent of which could have been averted had the U.S. death rate mirrored the weighted average of the other G7 nations.” But the trajectory of the U.S. falling behind G-7 nations in life expectancy is nothing new, and the gap has grown over the past decade even before the coronavirus exacerbated existing deficiencies in the U.S. health system. The number of excess deaths in the U.S. when compared to similar countries in the G-7 already stood at more than 450,000 in 2018 alone—a number that has been climbing for decades. Most of those unnecessary deaths in the U.S. are in people under the age 65, such that, “if U.S. death rates were equivalent to those of other G7 nations, two of five deaths before age 65 years would have been averted,” the Lancet notes. “To put this number in context, the number of missing Americans each year is more than the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the USA in all of 2020.”

Well, never is a long time to foretell.
Anyway, given what we're doing now, I agree that no, it's not going to go away globally. And even if we got rid of it here, as long as it exists elsewhere on the planet, new variants will evolve, and those new variants may be - or may not be - susceptible to antibodies developed from previous infections or vaccinations. So until the planet as a whole gets its act together and makes vaccination a major shared project, we all will be in the spin-the-wheel SARS-CoV-2 game.
That said, eradication in humans isn't impossible. But it'll take focus, coordination, and money. So IMO the question is do we want to reach that goal enough to get it done.
And the potential animal reservoirs - cats, wild cats, and mink, just don't have sufficient exposure to humans to be more than a rare outbreak, if that.
Also, fwiw, I take endemic rabies as a good indicator of what's possible in wild animal vaccination if even just a small amount of money is spent. Any of us who's had a dog or cat is familiar with the rabies injection vaccination. But scientists have actually developed an ORAL rabies vaccine against different rabies strains. (Rabies strains evolve within species, because generally, a smaller rabid animal that bites a larger animal will be killed, while a larger rabid animal that bites a smaller animal will kill it. Either way, transmission is severely limited between different-sized animals. So 'bat' rabies, and 'skunk' rabies, and 'raccoon' rabies etc develop.) More than that, scientists have figured out how to stabilize the oral rabies vaccine, and how to select the proper bait that will attract the species to be vaccinated. For raccoons, for example, anything that smells like the worst rotten fish ever is very tempting. They then broadcast that vaccine-containing bait by airplane over the area of concern. That's how raccoon rabies originating in Florida and transported to Georgia (a hunter wanted to improve the local 'coon hunting) was stopped at Ohio where it had spread in less than 2 years. And that's how Mexican coyote rabies was stopped in its northward spread through Texas.
To me, the question isn't 'can we do it' - can we really eradicate SARS-CoV-2 from the planet, the question is 'how much do we want it'.
PS - a stable nasal spray/ eye drop/ oral rinse-and-swallow vaccine with a wide variety of proteins - not just spike proteins - all in different configurations would be highly preferential. The reason why current vaccines only target serious disease, and deaths, is because injections stimulate deep-body immune responses. They don't target infection and transmission, which happen in the mucous membranes. If you create a vaccine that stimulates the mucous membrane immune system, you stop the initial infection and the subsequent transmission.

As I've mentioned before, COVID-19 is going to be a global problem - with new variants developing and circulating globally in a very un-fun game of whack-a-mole - until the countries around the world get their act together and decide to eradicate it globally in a coordinated way.
Anyway, while the western world has held itself hostage to corporations and their vaccine prices and lack of manufacturing capacity, and in competition with each other for a supply; Russia took an entirely different path. Very early on, Russia announced its intent to develop a vaccine and sell it cheaply around the world. To that end, it developed Sputnik V with the "government-backed Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology". (wiki) And it's now selling its low cost vaccine around the globe including to many countries in the western hemisphere.

Eduardo Valdes, a former diplomat and member of government coalition Frente de Todos, who now serves as chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Argentina's Chamber of Deputies, says there's a clear line between vaccine negotiations and external factors (in obtaining Sputnik V for Argentina). "Now is not the time to do ideology. Our goal is for the Western Hemisphere to get its vaccines and not to poke into someone else's (Russia's) internal affairs," he told CNN.
Quote:In addition, Brazil and Cuba have obtained licenses to manufacture Sputnik V.
Six countries across the region -- Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Venezuela -- have now authorized use of the Sputnik V vaccine. Others are considering authorization requests, ever more urgent given the global shortage of available vaccines.
Quote:Russia did well. It did well by the global epidemiology and helping to stamp out COVID-19 globally, it did well by its people by vaccinating them in mass vaccination campaigns before it made them available globally, and it did well politically around the world by creating a legitimate global vaccine supply, especially for poorer countries.

U.S. Life Expectancy Falls by a Full Year
New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Thursday showed that life expectancy in the U.S. dropped by a full year in first half of 2020, yet another reminder of the devastating toll Covid-19 has exacted. The one-year drop in the average number of years an American, at birth, can expect to live to 77.8 years (down from 78.8 years in 2019) is the largest decline since World War II. That data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which is part of the CDC, only accounts for the first six months of 2020, which means the decline in life expectancy, a measurement of the nation’s health as a whole, will likely plummet even further, as the pandemic turned more deadly as the year wore on.

During the summer of 2020 the pandemic dies down in Europe but keeps shooting up in the US. By November we're doing worse than all but four or five European countries.
Why? Because Donald Trump insisted on reopening the economy too soon. Unlike Europe, we never crushed the virus to near zero. Instead we kept on killing people all through summer, and when winter came we were starting from a higher base. I think it's safe to say that this one mistake probably cost a hundred thousand lives or so.
This is why I rate our overall response to the pandemic as "pretty good." We really didn't make as many deadly mistakes as people think, and overall the CDC and FDA did a fairly reasonable job. The one big mistake we did make came down to a single sociopathic man whose motivations, as always, were beyond human ken. Electing Trump president was our only real mistake, and we did that long before anyone had ever heard of COVID-19.
NUTSHELL VERSION: We mostly responded fairly well to the pandemic, especially given how new it was and how the science behind it was changing rapidly in real time. On the vaccination front, our response has been all but miraculous.
We made only one big mistake: allowing Donald Trump to be our president. My take is that this is not enough to condemn the entire US response. It's only one thing. On the other hand, it was a big thing and we did elect the man. If you think it's sophistry to say "it was only one thing" when the result was so catastrophic, I can't really blame you. I think it's important to understand just where we went wrong, but I'm less concerned with how you then describe it.

We’ll Have Herd Immunity by April
https://archive.vn/92pKH
Quote:
Amid the dire Covid warnings, one crucial fact has been largely ignored: Cases are down 77% over the past six weeks. If a medication slashed cases by 77%, we’d call it a miracle pill. Why is the number of cases plummeting much faster than experts predicted?
In large part because natural immunity from prior infection is far more common than can be measured by testing. Testing has been capturing only from 10% to 25% of infections, depending on when during the pandemic someone got the virus. Applying a time-weighted case capture average of 1 in 6.5 to the cumulative 28 million confirmed cases would mean about 55% of Americans have natural immunity.
Now add people getting vaccinated. As of this week, 15% of Americans have received the vaccine, and the figure is rising fast. Former Food and Drug Commissioner Scott Gottlieb estimates 250 million doses will have been delivered to some 150 million people by the end of March.
There is reason to think the country is racing toward an extremely low level of infection. As more people have been infected, most of whom have mild or no symptoms, there are fewer Americans left to be infected. At the current trajectory, I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life.
Antibody studies almost certainly underestimate natural immunity. Antibody testing doesn’t capture antigen-specific T-cells, which develop “memory” once they are activated by the virus. Survivors of the 1918 Spanish flu were found in 2008—90 years later—to have memory cells still able to produce neutralizing antibodies.
Researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute found that the percentage of people mounting a T-cell response after mild or asymptomatic Covid-19 infection consistently exceeded the percentage with detectable antibodies. T-cell immunity was even present in people who were exposed to infected family members but never developed symptoms. A group of U.K. scientists in September pointed out that the medical community may be under-appreciating the prevalence of immunity from activated T-cells.
Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. would also suggest much broader immunity than recognized. About 1 in 600 Americans has died of Covid-19, which translates to a population fatality rate of about 0.15%. The Covid-19 infection fatality rate is about 0.23%. These numbers indicate that roughly two-thirds of the U.S. population has had the infection.
In my own conversations with medical experts, I have noticed that they too often dismiss natural immunity, arguing that we don’t have data. The data certainly doesn’t fit the classic randomized-controlled-trial model of the old-guard medical establishment. There’s no control group. But the observational data is compelling.
I have argued for months that we could save more American lives if those with prior Covid-19 infection forgo vaccines until all vulnerable seniors get their first dose. Several studies demonstrate that natural immunity should protect those who had Covid-19 until more vaccines are available. Half my friends in the medical community told me: Good idea. The other half said there isn’t enough data on natural immunity, despite the fact that reinfections have occurred in less than 1% of people—and when they do occur, the cases are mild.
But the consistent and rapid decline in daily cases since Jan. 8 can be explained only by natural immunity. Behavior didn’t suddenly improve over the holidays; Americans traveled more over Christmas than they had since March. Vaccines also don’t explain the steep decline in January. Vaccination rates were low and they take weeks to kick in.
My prediction that Covid-19 will be mostly gone by April is based on laboratory data, mathematical data, published literature and conversations with experts. But it’s also based on direct observation of how hard testing has been to get, especially for the poor. If you live in a wealthy community where worried people are vigilant about getting tested,
