I've got time, going all the way back to the Vietnam War, to explain what I mean. The highly disciplined pro-Nixon/pro-Vietnam War Americans consistently plugged their ears and covered their eyes and ignored what was happening or else they'd have to admit that Nixon's war, which they wholeheartedly supported both President and his war, was a fiasco that killed around a million South Vietnamese. Countries as disorganized as Trump's America have huge Covid-19 death tolls, while countries that went about their war with Covid-19 in an organized fashion have small death tolls. But you can't know which countries are doing a poor job of fighting a war unless you count the number of dead. Trumptards don't want to know the number of dead Americans, just like pro-Nixon/pro-Vietnam War supporters didn't want to know the number of dead South Vietnamese.

California’s coronavirus strain looks increasingly dangerous: ‘The devil is already here’

The Los Angeles Times reports:

A coronavirus variant that emerged in mid-2020 and surged to become the dominant strain in California not only spreads more readily than its predecessors, but also evades antibodies generated by COVID-19 vaccines or prior infection and is associated with severe illness and death, researchers said.

In a study that helps explain the state’s dramatic surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths — and portends further trouble ahead — scientists at UC San Francisco said the cluster of mutations that characterizes the homegrown strain should mark it as a “variant of concern” on par with those from the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil.

“The devil is already here,” said Dr. Charles Chiu, who led the UCSF team of geneticists, epidemiologists, statisticians and other scientists in a wide-ranging analysis of the new variant, which they call B.1.427/B.1.429. “I wish it were different. But the science is the science.”

Californians, along with the rest of the country, have been bracing for the rise of a more transmissible coronavirus variant from the U.K. known as B.1.1.7. But they should know that a rival strain that is probably just as worrisome has already settled in, and will probably account for 90% of the state’s infections by the end of next month, said Chiu, an infectious diseases researcher and physician.

The U.K. and California variants are each armed with enhanced capabilities, and the likelihood that they could circulate in the same population raises the specter of a return to spiking infections and deaths, Chiu said. It also opens the door to a “nightmare scenario”: That the two viruses will meet in a single person, swap their mutations, and create an even more dangerous strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The new evidence that the California variant could make people sicker, and vaccines less effective, should spur more intensive efforts to drive down infections, Chiu said. Those should include both public health measures, such as masking and limits on public activities, and a campaign of rapid vaccinations, he added.

Worse, some of the disinformation was coming from the White House: that COVID-19 was no more dangerous than a seasonal flu; that masks weren’t necessary; that the U.S. could have a safe vaccine by October. Hotez worried that the White House might wreck the public faith in vaccines with its impossible promises. He couldn’t imagine why a president wouldn’t at least acknowledge the hundreds of thousands who’d died.

But should he say anything about that? The pandemic had made Hotez a constant presence in the media, particularly on cable-TV news shows. He has a talent for conveying science to regular people, and as a top vaccine scientist with experience with coronaviruses, his credentials are impeccable. “He’s got tremendous credibility,” says investigative journalist Brian Rice, “because he’s done a huge amount to draw attention to potentially vaccine-preventable diseases that are less of an issue in the highly developed countries of North America and Europe: diseases that are often less likely to be profitable to the drug industry but nevertheless kill a lot of people.”

On TV, his appearance is a bonus: Forever rumpled and bow-tied, he looks like a scientist from central casting. But unlike a stereotypical scientist, his emotions are on surprising display. When a grim subject transforms his usual smiley warmth into anger or dismay, the effect is potent. He doesn’t come across as a normal talking head, auto-furious about the topic du jour. He looks like a teddy bear forced into battle.

Now, Hotez was wondering just how much battle he should take on, how frankly he should speak. He worried that he’d alienate Fox viewers, leaving them with one less source of credible scientific information. He worried, too, that scientists who criticized the Trump administration might be targeted — maybe just on social media but maybe in the real world as well.

The Trump administration quietly took around $10 billion from a fund meant to help hospitals and health care providers affected by Covid-19 and used the money to bankroll Operation Warp Speed contracts, four former Trump administration officials told STAT.

The Department of Health and Human Services appears to have used a financial maneuver that allowed officials to spend the money without telling Congress, and the agency got permission from its top lawyer to do so.

None. By the way, Congress hasn't issued a declaration of war since 1942. But Congress continues to shape U.S. military policy through appropriations and oversight. Unlike any previous president, Democrat or Republican, Trump ran away with $10 billion outside of Congressional appropriations and to do that he had to sneakily evade Congressional oversight.

Unmasked: When Identity Politics Turns Deadly

Will Republican politicians kill some Texans to own the libs?

Relieving yourself in public is illegal in every state. I assume that few readers are surprised to hear this; I also assume that many readers wonder why I feel the need to bring up this distasteful subject. But bear with me: There’s a moral here, and it’s one that has disturbing implications for our nation’s future.

Although we take these restrictions for granted, they can sometimes be inconvenient, as anyone out and about after having had too many cups of coffee can attest. But the inconvenience is trivial, and the case for such rules is compelling, both in terms of protecting public health and as a way to avoid causing public offense. And as far as I know there aren’t angry political activists, let alone armed protesters, demanding the right to do their business wherever they want.

Which brings me to my actual subject: face mask requirements in a pandemic.

Wearing a mask in public, like holding it in for a few minutes, is slightly inconvenient, but hardly a major burden. And the case for imposing that mild burden in a pandemic is overwhelming. The coronavirus variants that cause Covid-19 are spread largely by airborne droplets, and wearing masks drastically reduces the variants’ spread.

So not wearing a mask is an act of reckless endangerment, not so much of yourself — although masks appear to provide some protection to the wearer — as of other people. Covering our faces while the pandemic lasts would appear to be simple good citizenship, not to mention an act of basic human decency.

Yet Texas and Mississippi have just ended their statewide mask requirements. Texas Gov. Abbott's deadly pattern of failed leadership

Even in a state that celebrates limited government, most Texans can agree to this much: Gov. Greg Abbott’s top duty is to protect Texans’ lives, and at the very least, do nothing to put them in harm’s way. He has woefully failed.

The governor blindsided the medical community, business leaders and millions of Texans in his decision to drop all state restrictions on Wednesday that had been aimed at slowing the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus. While the desire to allow struggling businesses to open fully is understandable on some level, there can be only one motivation for dropping the simple, commonsense requirement that we all wear face masks: the governor is putting politics over people’s lives.

Such recklessness in the service of political expediency has become a pattern for Abbott. His cynical calculations, and the deaths they cause, will define his legacy.

In his latest move, Abbott may be hoping to distract Texans from his equally failed leadership regarding the catastrophic collapse of the state power grid during last month’s deadly winter freeze.

Voters must not allow the diversionary tactic to work. Abbott’s failures related to the power crisis cost lives — dozens and counting — and so will this week’s decision to toss out the only meager tools local leaders had to require Texans to protect each other from a virus that has already killed more than 500,000 Americans and roughly 44,000 Texans. There’s no doubt that some, perhaps many, lives would have been spared had Abbott simply waited a month or two before easing restrictions.

Did Abbott even ask any medical experts to model how many deaths could result? If so, did he deem the losses justified if they would score him temporary political points with Republican voters who have come to equate cloth face coverings with tyranny?

The calculation is beyond chilling. At his press conference in Lubbock last week, Abbott crowed about the state’s reopening like he were announcing a new corporate relocation. A small friendly crowd even cheered him on. All the while, he was completely aware of the facts and the science even as he turned his back on them. Deaths and cases are still increasing in Texas. All five worrying new variants are present in Houston, including one against which the vaccines have proven much less effective. Texas ranks near the bottom in the nation for per-capita vaccinations.

Abbott’s pandemic announcement — modeled after Florida’s months’ long foolishness and mirrored this week by Mississippi — was just the latest in a cynical pattern . . .

“Basically, going back to January, they’d be like, ‘China’s not going to control it; 80 percent of the population is going to get it; all efforts to contain it are going to fail; we have to learn to live with this virus; contact tracing and testing make no sense; this is going to be everywhere; right now we need to build up hospitals’ — which they didn’t even do. But they really didn’t think it was stoppable,” she says. “And then all of a sudden you started to see, in February, South Korea stopping it, Taiwan stopping it, and China stopping it. Then, in March, New Zealand. And then Australia. And then there’s this realization of, ‘Oh, wow. Actually, it is controllable.’”

At the beginning of March, South Korea was averaging more than 550 new daily confirmed cases, compared with just 53 in the U.K. At the end of the month, South Korea had 125; the U.K. was at 4,500 and climbing. “In the UK we have had nine weeks to listen, learn and prepare,” Sridhar wrote angrily in the Guardian, berating the British regime for failing to establish basic systems for supplies, testing, and contact tracing. “Countries such as Senegal were doing this in January,” she wrote. “We had a choice early on in the UK’s trajectory to go down the South Korean path,” but instead the country was at risk of sleepwalking from small failures into giant ones. “We must race to make up for the time lost during two months of passivity,” Sridhar concluded. Of course, the country didn’t, and now its death toll measures in the six figures. Sound familiar?

Trump's malign influence spread to nearly every red-state governor, most of the Republican caucus in Congress, and of course to Fox News. This is truly the big difference between the US and the rest of the West, and the reason that our mortality rate was eventually one of the worst—though not the absolute worst—among our peer countries. Under any other president, things would have been very different.

How do you know he tracked you down before and how do you suspect that he did it?

And just an FYI if you didn't know it already, the links you should specifically be on the lookout are the "link shorteners" like the one he posted above. Ones that have things like "bi.tly" or "cut.ly" or something followed by a short random string of characters. Those are just the dead giveaway ones though.

But since I've never REALLY learned how posting links on this site works, you might want to avoid clicking any of his unless you "reply with quote" first and make sure that the links to genuine sites he posts hear are actually directing you to that site first.

I know that on many blogs you have the ability to wrap a link and hide it behind just text (like you see news sites do to their other articles all the time) or even wrap it up with a legitimate looking link. This site is so bare-bones that you probably can't do that here, but who knows?

Maybe I'll test it out in your test thread at some point and see if this is possible to do here or not. I'm not really worried about it since I wouldn't click on one of his links even if he weren't trying to farm user info.

In the time of the Roman Empire, over 2,000 years ago, worldwide longevity for humans was about 35 years of age. That did not change until the 1850s. Since 1850, the increase in longevity of humans has been at a rate of about three years each decade. So what happened?

Science entered medical practice.

Medicine began to move from focusing on the likely outcome of a disease, to using science and scientific method to answer medical questions and develop interventions and treatments. A few examples: In 1850, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweiss, a Hungarian physician, proved that hand-washing could reduce fatal infections that were occurring in as many as 25 to 30 percent of women who gave birth in the hospital. Dr. John Snow identified that the handle of a water pump on Broad Street in London was the source of cholera. By removing the pump, cases of cholera disappeared quickly.

In the late 1800s, the German physician Robert Koch established the field of microbiology and identified many of the organisms responsible for disease in humans.

Dr. Joseph Lister developed the use of antiseptics to reduce bacterial transmission in surgery. Lister's studies, along with the work of French researcher Louis Pasteur, supported the concept that preventing bacteria from entering the human body could prevent disease. In the 19th century, most of the advances in longevity were the result of preventing bacterial infections, using antiseptic techniques, and providing clean water through civil engineering.

As we entered the 20th century, the main causes of death were still bacterial infections: pneumonia, dysentery, bacterial enteritis, diphtheria and tuberculosis. With the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928, the age of antibiotics was born. With effective therapy for many bacterial infections, we lived through life threatening diseases, and lived longer.

But, viral diseases continued to threaten mankind. In the 1930s, 40s and 50s, polio killed and paralyzed millions of children, teens and adults around the globe. It was a devastating disease that affected the young and struck fear in the heart of every parent around the world. The killed virus vaccine against polio invented by Dr. Jonas Salk (1952) and the attenuated live virus vaccine of Dr. Albert Sabin (1963) eliminated this disease and added years of life to humans.

Like antibiotics before them, vaccines became the main drivers of longevity in the 20th century. Vaccines all but eliminated smallpox, measles, mumps, tetanus, chickenpox, diphtheria, rubella, scarlet fever and Type B meningitis. Vaccines effectively treat flu, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Haemophilus influenza b, Rotavirus and pneumococcal disease.

So when I hear that people don’t believe in vaccines or are reluctant to get one, I want to say, think again. Next time you visit a relative in your family over the age of 50, take a good look at them. Without vaccines, there is a good chance they wouldn’t be alive today.

And unfortunately, we have evidence of the importance of vaccines when they are not available. This year for the first time in 150 years, mankind lost, on average, an entire year of life because we didn’t have a vaccine for the coronavirus.

So, let’s not ignore over 150 years of science that has led to an increase in longevity for every person on this planet. Get vaccinated! And until you do, wear a mask.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) is purposely using the lack of total clarity as to how the virus works and how we combat it to raise questions about whether what we are doing is right.
